New Zealand gives mainland-made garments a clean bill of health
Thursday, October 18, 2007
New tests of clothing imported from China and elsewhere show no cause for alarm about levels of the chemical formaldehyde, the New Zealand government said yesterday.
New Zealand launched an investigation into Chinese and other garment imports after a local television consumer affairs program reported finding dangerous concentrations of formaldehyde in imported clothing. TV3's Target program said some tests had shown concentrations of the chemical up to 900 times the safety limit set by the World Health Organization. Formaldehyde, a chemical that gives a permanent press effect to clothes, is also used as an embalming fluid.
