Hello everybody, today I decided to do my first photo-essay with my new camera. The neighborhood selection was tough, but after much deliberation, I decided to do Little Ethiopia, the heart of the 60,000-strong Ethiopian community here, in Los Angeles.

Any comments/feedback/input/etc welcomed  Enjoy! :cucumber:

I really enjoyed it! You took some great photos that really brought out the feel of the community and culture. If you make any more of these, I'd love to see them.

Wow! great shots of such an interesting community within the city. I always wanted to try Ethiopian Cuisine to see what's it all about. Must be yummy!

So what's the next ethnic community in the list???

Great pics! You captured that community perfectly and in a positive light! Little Ethiopia is just one of many great ethnic hoods that make this city so interesting to live in.

If you love spicy and flavorful food, a stroll down Fairfax Ave. is a must to sample one of the many Ethiopian restaurants in the area. I'd recommend Nyala Restaurant. It's pretty good and one of the most popular. Once I almost had to yank my tongue out after eating a super spicy, pungent bowl of Dorowat, which is some kind of chicken, stewed in red pepper paste. Very flavorful, even though it took my taste buds 2 days to recover afterwards! My ex-girlfriend at the time wouldn't kiss me for days. So be forewarned. Don't forget to bring your Altoids! You could leave your American Express at home, but never forget your breath mints! LOL...It takes getting used to for gastronomy neophytes, but well worth it.

Overall, my experiences have been very positive when I visit this community. Very colorful people and culture that puts a great emphasis on the usage of fragrances wherever, whenever possible. I must say Ethiopians are also some of the nicest people I've ever met. I'm always greeted with a gentle smile and hello, whenever I'm in the area.

From what I've heard many Ethiopians are hard-working immigrants that tried to escape the famine of the 1980's and war-ravaged North East Africa.

Okay, now which ethnic hood will you be focusing next? =D

I've already said my 2 cents in the City Photo section, but figure I support you here as well (something I wish all the local foumers would do with my threads, hint hint).

Again thanks for sharing of any neighborhood I've been hoping would get some representation here. If anyone is interested, and love baked goods. Hansens Bakery in this area has some of the best cakes you ever tasted. There not an Ethopian bakery, but have been in the area for years, and have a long history there. The one thing I like about their cakes, and especially the icing is its not super sweet. The butter cream is a must for the filling, and trust me. No one I know who I have brought a cake to a gathering have denied how good and fresh their cake is. In fact its usally the one cake that gets eaten up. They're not cheap, but also not overy priced either. They have a wall full of famous people I guess who are customers on their wall. I highly suggest this place.

BTW I love those hats, I may have to go over and pick up one for myself.

Well I guess I'm being long winded again, okay I'll stop.

I used to go to an Irish bar just north of that area (tom bergin's) and occassionally would drive through little ehtiopia. i was wondering how many ethiopian immigrants actually live right around there. I always thought that that was a pretty expensive neighborhood consideing its proximity to carthay circle, south carthay, and the miracle mile. does anyone know about this? i'm not saying immigrants can't live in nice neighborhoods, it just seems that most ethnic enclaves tend to have lower prices.

Ethiopian men are hot! But eventhough I don't swim in those waters, I'd have to say that the women are many times drop-dead gorgeous.

Great set, king-I didn't even know there was a little ethiopia until you told me about it! You learn something new every day.

:guns1:Thanks everybody for the overwhelming love, that very support will propel me to do a tour of another ethnic tour sometime next week.

Hopefully a mod can sticky this, because I have some plans to do many of the other ethnic neighborhoods that make Los Angeles, well Los Angeles
