View Full Version : Broadcasting Place, Leeds University student accommodation
di Livio October 20th, 2007, 03:11 PM Situated next to the inner ring road system, and in the same part of the city as Opal, this development will be clad in corten steel and replaces the old BBC North premises on Woodhouse Lane.
(some good renders so i thought they were worth posting)

Luvvin... It 8/10
Leeds No.1 October 20th, 2007, 11:18 PM I also like it alot :) It's the right size for the area, and a quality design- especially for Student Accomodation!
daveylad2 October 21st, 2007, 05:26 AM A 7 for now.
jimbo October 21st, 2007, 07:54 PM upwardly aspiring 8 out of 10. great looking building, very different for that location, much more daring and inspiring that the Plaza, and Opal (though in the case of the latter, not hugely difficult).
Wendigo Wendigo October 21st, 2007, 11:29 PM There must be something wrong with me coz I think it looks horrible. To me it's just too gimmicky and it's just crammed so awkwardly into the site it's occupying. Ugh.
Rob October 23rd, 2007, 12:16 PM Two points to note;
- This will be totally unique to Leeds in form and the finish type. I think it wouldn't be very appropriate on its own, but it is a great contrast to various other blandly clad towers going up nearby, and Leeds really needs some contrast now.
- Construction has started on the 23 storey tower now, and the large tower crane went up last week, so it's beyond proposal stage. We'll see it start to take shape on the skyline at the northerly end of the city centre over the next few months.
Its AlL gUUd October 25th, 2007, 12:45 AM i kinda do like it, but can only properly vote when completed
Mr Brightside October 25th, 2007, 05:55 PM That looks terrible!!a crime against architecture!!
Smoggie_Si October 25th, 2007, 05:59 PM First impression is that I love it and it's proof that buildings designed to a strict budget don't have to be horrid legoland stuff like Opal. I am a firm believer that good architecture needn't be more expensive than poor architecture so am willing this building to look as good as the renders!
I would give it 8/10 but I'm witholding 1 as I'm not sure whether such a large building being all corten steel might be a bit too much, therefore 7/10.
Mr Brightside October 25th, 2007, 06:00 PM i gave it a 3!!an i was being nice!!
AndrewC October 26th, 2007, 07:42 PM I think its ok - not sure how the cladding will turn out, don't really know what 'Corten Steel' is.
7/10
paulmat October 26th, 2007, 07:51 PM ^^It's that rusted steel like is on the new riverside building.
I think it's not bad. About 8/10, but i'm not sure how the steel will work out on such a large scale, so i'm gonna wait to give it a rating later.

AndrewC October 27th, 2007, 03:31 AM Ah yes, thats nice but I'm not sure what effect it will have covering such a large structure. Theres a building in sheffield which has it as a sort of 'trim' or border along one part of it. An entire tower covered in it might be overkill.
wiggleyleeds October 27th, 2007, 08:42 PM that link image just looks like rusty corregated iron lol
paulmat October 28th, 2007, 02:58 PM These are maybe some better pics of what it'll look like.

I think it could look good on the tower actually.
Leeds No.1 October 28th, 2007, 07:41 PM If it turns out like that, it will be very impressive.
di Livio October 29th, 2007, 02:29 PM If it turns out like that, it will be very impressive.
It should look pretty funky, but will be probably be branded 'an eyesore' by the general public.
It takes time for the steel to properly weather so it will look like a dull grey for the first few weeks.
Leeds No.1 October 29th, 2007, 06:41 PM Isn't it the same material used for the Angel of the North? Which of course was considered an eyesore to start with, and right through its planning, but now has become a much loved symbol of pride for the North East.
Stefan88 October 30th, 2007, 01:08 AM If it's tall it will be dubbed an eyesore frankly
Leeds No.1 October 30th, 2007, 01:13 AM Many people brand BWP as an eyesore. Of course, many don't, but there are enough who think it's the worst thing thats ever happened to Leeds.
Stefan88 October 30th, 2007, 03:19 AM I can think of alot worse things that have been built in Leeds to be honest. I love BWP Im just not keen on the changing lights running down the side. They should stay ones colour I think the purple/pink doesn't suit the building.
Does it not shine in peoples apartments?
Leeds No.1 October 30th, 2007, 07:11 PM Well if you notice, it actually runs up the stone bit where lifts/stairs are, and is quite vertical (ie it wouldn't shine into windows anyway). I quite like the changing colours, but it needs to be done better. If it was done with as much attention and care to detail as the coloured lights of The Light, it would be excellent.
I think it would be better to have some brighter strips that carry the green strips on wrapping right round the building. They could then change colour. I think that would be better.
cardiff October 31st, 2007, 12:20 AM Looks an interesting design though can of stands out in the first renders and makes the area look bleak IMO which is not a good thing
Rob November 1st, 2007, 10:19 PM Many people brand BWP as an eyesore. Of course, many don't, but there are enough who think it's the worst thing thats ever happened to Leeds.
I really don't think seriously many people don't like it, just some old thinking people who are stuck in the past, don't get out and really don't realise Leeds is actually a city. A straw poll by Look North could hardly find any disenters when they had the opening day presented live from the building.
Subliving November 2nd, 2007, 01:57 AM And further to Rob's point, many people brand the Gherkin and eye-sore.
Subliving.
leonardhenry November 2nd, 2007, 02:13 AM And further to Mr Subliving and Rob's points, these complainants would have complained about BWP regardless of the design. They simply don't like it because it's big

I am greeting from Poland. We with pleasure will hold this worst thing in Leeds:).
I will say frankly, cosmic building. Matter of the taste. For it different opinions and points. I very much like him, although he isn't shocking.
8/10
Immunda Leodis October 18th, 2008, 11:06 PM I really can't wait for this to be finished! I walk past it everyday and I've got a really good feeling about this!!!!
Gherkin October 19th, 2008, 12:44 AM ^^ Exactly what he said! The faculty of architecture's churning out some great looking buildings, that's why I'm studying there! It could use a bit of height, but even at 69m it dominates quite a few streets in Leeds.
