This is akin to what we see across the harbour at Luna Park!!! :bash:

Are the locals stupid or what?

They want one of our most famous icons in Sydney to move from it's location at Wooloomoloo - Harrys Cafe De Wheels.

The suburb is centred around this icon

Why?

It's too noisy as late night revellers tuck into their world famous pies, and believe that it causes congestion on local roads and produce alot of litter.

It should stay there. You just don't move these icons, and hey weren't they there first????

The other Harry's out here in Liverpool seems to be going well- obviously not as well as the Original- but here its tucked in between the Megacenta and the now closed down Orange Grove Designer Outlets, so there's no residents to complain.

It would be a shame to see the original move though- its an icon, and like all have said- there waaaay before many of the objectees moved in.

Russell Crowe lives in an apartment in the wharf doesn't he. I wonder if he'd be pro or against Harry's?

How long has it been in that location for? Must be 50+ years. Surely it is a Sydney institution. How many are there in Sydney? I know that there is one on the foreshore in Newcastle aswell.

There's another one at Haymarket outside the Capitol Theatre.

In other news, Sydney Harbour is to be drained because residents in the surrounding areas believe the watercraft are making too much noise.

:tongue2:

Naturally, I'm not being at all serious in posting this.

There's another one at Haymarket outside the Capitol Theatre.

I was just about to say the same thing, but say it's near Paddy Maguires.

Just shows how we're different people.

Just found a shot the Haymarket store I took last year :)
It has been a Sydney icon since 1945

It was originally founded in Woolloomooloo in 1938, closed during the war (as Harry served in the war) and re-opened in it's current location in 1945.

I am curious as to where this movement of residents wanting it closed is coming from? There have been no new residential developments in the area for a near decade.

I do admit though the area is very noisy on weekends in whats normally a quiet residential suburb. I live in Potts Point and can always hear the noise perpetuated from the area well into the early mornings. It's loud enough that I am considering installing doubling glazing windows and I am elevated, about 200m+ away.

I don't think it should be moved, but maybe it should close at an earlier hour. At around the same time as all the severs of liquor in the area have to do. I mean Harry's history was serving lunch for local wharf workers, not drunkard louts at 4am.

They are all coming from apartments in the Wharf. However some within the complex led by John Laws want it to stay

Look, there are nimbys and there are downright selfish, miserable cunts. These people are certainly the latter.

I understand people not wanting a highway or train line going right past their home but for fucks sake this is just ridiculous.

Why didn't these dimwits buy a place near a quiet area in the first place?

This isn't as bad as the Luna Park twats but they're definitily in the same league.

The residents have lost their battle with the council meaning that it won't be going anywhere and will have trading hours extended.

Anyone up for a pie :)

Cool. Gimme a floater with mash īn peas now!

New city & inner-city residents just donīt get it. They move closer in & expect the same environments as they did in the outer suburbs. Ahem, reality check!

"You can take the girl out of the country, but you canīt take the country out of the girl" is the expression. :ohno:

Anyway, go Harrys!

What I don't get is if you serve liquor in that area (Wooloomoollooo) you are forced to close earlier then in the near by entertainment districts or CBD because your operating in a designated residential area. Yet something like Harry's which attracts the exact same crowd can open till 4am. Right across the road though the nearby Bells and Tilbury Hotels, are forced to close at 12am.

People dont get drunk and aggressive on pies ;)

Ipggi
October 31st, 2007, 01:57 AM
No thats because they feel like pies when they are already drunk and occasionally in aggressive moods.

From what I understand it is busy at nights- Its more popular with the older people who now couldnt be bothered driving into the city to have something to eat after going to see a movie/pub/club etc.

Its fairly busy on the weekend during the day as well. It was meant to be located right on Orange Grove Road, however Liverpool Council in their never ending wisdom decided it couldnt go there so its now set back around 200m back from Orange Grove Road.

I was at the airport a few weeks ago and i didnt notice it at the T1 terminal. The one at T2 has been there for a while.

I thought the one at Wooloomooloo was always open 24/7.

There is one being fitted out atm in Tempe where the old 'Dino's Diner' used to be.

Just down the road from where the new IKEA is being built in Tempe/Sydenham. Im sure it will become quite a popular stop off for passing traffic.

I notice that too. What a strange spot for Harry's Cafe de Wheels, right on the highway... It's gonna attract Lebs at night for sure.

Dino's was a local institution. One of the few places where you could drive in and eat. I didn't know it had closed recently either.

In the past few years it had become quite run down.

Yeah it had become pretty run down, but damn they made good Pizza. Their burgers were pretty good too.

As for Harry's, the last time I had a pie from them it tasted like a crap frozen job from coles. I wasnt impressed. I can walk to the new Harrys from my place in Wolli Creek, so yeah, Ill give em another go, but sad to see Dino's gone.

The pies are baked at the Ultimo outlet - Hannah's Hot pies. I think you can buy pies to cook at home.

In the past few years it had become quite run down. It just wasn't the same once they stopped the Sunday night "gatherings" which at times closed the highway.....

Ahhh; so Hannah's is Harry's? It all makes sense now :)

Thanks Fabs

Yeah my brother buys unheated pies from Hannah's and walks home to Glebe and puts them in the freezer for later.
