lawson18 October 22nd, 2007, 02:11 PM that library looks too awesome, bring in a laptop and start burning
Leon... October 23rd, 2007, 05:26 AM I love the skylines! Especially the narrow terraces in the foreground of 2 and 3.
The library is kind of scary - it seems like the horrific logical limit of the whole iPod white thing. All the shots seem to have large areas of scarily bright whiteness, I feel like I'd go nuts in there.
Bullswool October 23rd, 2007, 02:55 PM fantastic photos!

Designed by Renzo Piano (the master  ). The roof is actually just steps. You can go on top of the roof and sit on the steps. Great view from up there.

Espma November 8th, 2007, 08:58 AM ..isn't Amsterdam known for its Red District as well?! Is it similar to Kings Cross?!
fro November 8th, 2007, 12:30 PM Awesome pics Miliux! I thought Amsterdam was my favourite European city, i really loved it. I also thought that the grey skies really suited the city... The red light district gets all the attention, however I think it's also one of the prettiest cities with all those canals.
So what you doing in Amsterdam? Studying?
MILIUX November 8th, 2007, 01:14 PM ..isn't Amsterdam known for its Red District as well?! Is it similar to Kings Cross?!
It's more 'skin' than just the Kings Cross.
Prostitutes here are seen through red tinted glass in front of buildings without only the bikini and bra on. It's not just the red light district that has them. There are other parts of Amsterdam too! You can even see them with almost nothing on pacing up and down the district. I go through the Red Light District almost everyday to and from uni, because it's the smack bang in the centre of city.
In the Netherlands, prostitutes are recognised as a legal career. So you're entitled for social security and health.
to Fro: yeah, i'm here for study.
ØlandDK November 8th, 2007, 11:43 PM Some nice pics here MILIUX!

This is Aan 'Tij. Usually for students, but there are a lot of Dutch residents coming at night to get something to eat. Cheap beers, warm inside, boardgames, free wireless internet, decent foods. Good music round the clock. I live 4 meters from this building. Usually open my window wide enough to listen the tune while doing my work. ;)

This is what student housing looks like. A reclaimed land from river, with levels of converted shipping containers. My building is not in this photo. I live closest to the sea.

Spuistraat
http://gallery.miliux.com/img/v2/p538531955-4.jpg
Typical brothels throughout Amsterdam. It's a similar theme with red curtain in the Red Light District. If the prostitutes are free, the window will be free without red curtain and they usually sit down on high stools or just dance wearing bra and underwear on.

isoboy December 8th, 2007, 02:04 AM Wow, great set of pics! Amsterdam looks SO nice and inviting, especially in those pics taken in the evening.
Bullswool December 9th, 2007, 01:20 AM Fantastic! Love the night shots, they are brilliant.
ParraMan December 9th, 2007, 03:43 AM Awesome pictures Chris! Me so missing that place! I know every single street shot and building that you've shown on these photos and even know the buildings where you're living.
Amsterdam is an awesome place (though i'm not really into the stuff it's most famous for) and the culture (read club music there...) is to die for....
I guess you're having a great time there. Cheers/Prost!
MILIUX December 9th, 2007, 03:50 AM The weather is not that great. It feels like London all over again. I'm migrating Southward for a bit to escape this cold weather. I'm going to Italy for about 2 weeks to get myself warm.
Many of these photos look blue tinted because of the cold blue haze. It looks kinda ghostly at night. Hardly any skyscrapers lit up and most traffic lights are turned off by 10pm.
I really like the public transportation system here. So neat and tidy. Although most Dutch ride a bike wherever they go.

city_thing December 9th, 2007, 03:57 AM I'm suprised no one threw your camera into the canals Miliux. You gone past a few places that I remember well (a coffeeshop that I went to a few times, my hostel etc. etc.) -these pictures really make me miss Amsterdam. It's such a great city. Good job.

You mean the red light district? Well, i didn't take photos of the prostitutes, if that is what you meant. I was pretty discrete about it, and only took where there were a large gathering of tourists snapping away, like on the bridge. lol.
I have pretty much had planned and calculated before-hand in places where i should take snaps.
nmuzz December 9th, 2007, 11:26 AM How cool is Amsterdam!! I visit every year in October - stay at the A-Train Hotel (which is across from Central Station) and check out Eurospoor in Utrecht which is a massive model train exhibition.
Being such a tram buff, I'm in my element! They also have these amazing tri-segmented bendy-buses. I'll see if I can find a photo of it.
The Nemo centre is fantastic too - my kids loved it! They've got this metal ring that you can pull over yourself and be totally enclosed in a bubble! Cool stuff!

I figured out that Amsterdam Centre is actually 2-3 degrees warmer than the outter ring of Amsterdam. I don't know the exact reason, but could be the temperature from the River Ij and the wind.

KIWIKAAS December 20th, 2007, 11:35 PM ^^
The trees looked great today eh?
When I lived just outside The Hague we used to get far severer frosts than here in the city itsself. I used to get into the car in a winter landscape and drive into green within 5 kms. I think it's about 2 degrees difference or so. Lots of central heating running of course and street lights.

MILIUX December 21st, 2007, 12:20 AM It's -4 degrees C temperature now. Getting 1 degrees colder everyday.
I see new snow coverage outside.
it's funny watching so many tourists squirm and see their nose, hands and ears turn red. Especially those from South Asia who never seen snow before. The clothing they had to buy just to come here...

brisbanite January 31st, 2008, 01:56 AM Fantastic photos Milux, you should be on Amsterdam's tourist board's payroll. I had no trouble with taking photos of the coffeeshops, is it frowned upon? I knew photos of the prostitute area was though.
I have attached a couple I took of the coffeeshops around Amsterdam.

MILIUX January 31st, 2008, 11:45 AM Thanks Svartmetall. I was around Amsterdam for a jog anyhow. It was nice jogging around the harbour.
And as for coffeeshops, i love that Jamaican coffeeshop! I walk pass it in most days and i always see tourists taking photo of it or with it. In Dutch law, you can grow pot in your backyard with a limit of 3. I have a friend in Southern Holland who has 3 huge pot plants growing in his backyard. 3 years supply right there.

eastadl February 17th, 2008, 01:42 AM I love your pics Miliux. Amsterdam is a very pretty city. I liked it. It was a bit daunting just after you leave a coffee shop, and then dealing with crossing a road with different traffic lights for cars, bikes and trams. Would love to go back. I loved the amount of bike use. Im about to ride into Adelaide City, however its 38 degrees, wish it was cold and snowy like in your part of the world.

MILIUX May 14th, 2008, 12:14 AM The whole Queen's Day is built on lies! It's not even the birthday of the current queen! It was the late queen's b'day! They only left it unamended because the current queen was born on the wrong day of the year...in the middle of winter. So since the previous birthday of the former queen was more attractive in the middle of spring, they left it!
Meh, it's the same for Australia. Who the fuck cares! Holiday is a holiday, right? Nobody cares about the holiday built on lies!

brisbanite May 15th, 2008, 05:22 AM Yeah great pics again! A bit of a left field question, does Amsterdam have water police who patrol the canals and do they have breathtesting limits for the operators of the boats? It looks like a lot of party boats in those pics.
MILIUX May 16th, 2008, 01:30 PM I don't think there are water police. If people can ride a bike after a pub crawl, i don't see the problem in boats. lol.
EDIT: There is water police, which is located just West of River Ij from Centraal Station. But i rarely see them through canals.

It's funny how contrasting the Dutch are. I saw some blokes reading playboy with their girlfriends in a local cafe. Opening up the centre-fold pages while smoking pot. They were talking about the new 'positions' they should test. haha.

historyworks June 30th, 2008, 03:33 AM Only just discovered this thread MILIUX. Thank you for introducing people to the beauties of Amsterdam, it is certainly worth showing off. I've had many happy stays there over the years, almost a second home. Sadly KLM no longer flies direct from Sydney - I always went to Europe via Schipol, best place to land and fan out IMO! Last time though I found centrum was getting a little worse for wear, perhaps the imapct of all those tourists!
Svartmetall June 30th, 2008, 03:57 AM ^^ Schipol and FFM are two of the best airports in Europe to use as they have some of the fewest delays of the large airports.
Unfortunately whenever I fly long-haul I nearly always have to go through Heathrow! :(
TOCC June 30th, 2008, 05:57 AM nice, il be going to amsterdam in a few weeks for a visit

MILIUX June 30th, 2008, 12:31 PM 1. Anne Frank Huis: It's about a journey of a girl's life in WWII and her experience of being deported to Nazi concentration camp. Expect a long queue for about 30min.
2. Open Bibliotheek: Public library with free internet access. No need for payable netcafes. It's an amazing minimalist Apple style interior. On the 7th level is a gaumet restaurant with sweeping panoramic view. Located East of Centraal Station.
3. Jordaan: Walk around this surreal and scenic district located where the Anne Frank is. Just walk and be amazed about how Amsterdam has 90 islands connected with draw bridges. The true 'global village'.
4: Rijksmuseum: Located at museumquater, it is one of the major museum in Europe
5: Van Gogh museum: Near Rijksmuseum

To which airport are you refering to as FFM? Fergus Falls, Minnesota?
Amsterdam is a good airport. With 6 runways (3 parallel north-south, 2 askew east-west and 1 shorter runway for GA/executive) they have plenty of scope for handling traffic.

tbor September 22nd, 2008, 10:46 AM This may sound stupid... but what proportion of the books in the book shops and in the bibiotheek are in Dutch?
... from my experience most Dutch people speak better english than 90% of ostrayans ;)
MILIUX September 22nd, 2008, 11:03 AM Well, in my University bibliotheek, it would be around 40%? But they have a very extensive collection of books and it was enough for me to do my uni papers. There are 23 University bibliotheeks (http://www.science.uva.nl/library/locations/) around the city of Amsterdam, which just dwarfs the UNSW library collection. Dutch uni students are expected to know near-native level English because they need to do independent scholarly research.
In the Openbare bibliotheek Amsterdam (http://www.oba.nl/index.cfm?vid=BC638BCA-3FFA-497D-9CA1C74A819C832A), it would be about 30%. Just click that link and do some random booksearches. I found some architecture books on Sydney in Openbare bibliotheek. :D
There are many specialised bookstores. Spui is the "English bookstore plaza" surrounded with at least 3 big English bookstores. My uni even owned a building in Spui just for authors to launch their new books and debut.
I bought my books in amazon or ebay anyhow. Thanks to E.U, i can get very cheap delivery from Britain. Ahh...customs union.
Not all Dutch speak good English. The Y generation and little kids can certainly speak more than 3 languages (Dutch, English and German or French). They were enforced since the 1970s to educate the masses in preperation for the information age. I have been to towns such as Tilburg where only people in customer service can speak decent English. But that's okay since it was rare for non-Dutch to lurk in these towns. Obviously, Amsterdam has highest English literacy because it's swamped by the English-speaking tourists and corporate sectors located in the parameters of the historic centre. Closely followed by other cities such as The Hague, Leiden, Rotterdam and Utrecht.
Utrecht is building this bibliotheek...

MILIUX October 4th, 2008, 01:52 AM I, as a Dutchman, can't stand the perpetual grey skies. How can someone from Australia possibly stand it?
I got use to it in the 2nd month i stayed there. I'm a winter bloke. I think the grey sky fits with the Dutch philosophy of being utilitarian and 'simple life' folks. ;) Bizarrely as some may not believe, but Amsterdam feels like an oversized village.
Typical Dutch friends' comments:
"Don't wear that expensive clothes! It'll get wet!"
"Don't show any bling bling...nobody cares when battling the rain!"
"Don't buy expensive bikes....because it'll get stolen in 3 hours!"
"Don't listen to mp3 player when walking...because you'll get hit by a bike and car...and it'll get wet from rain!"
Typical Dutch scene. Agree?
http://gallery.miliux.com/img/v1/p155706822-3.jpg
Sooner or later, i just wore a hoodie and a pair of nice jeans to uni. How Dutch...
Then when the sky clears even if it's only 22 degrees in Summer:
"Don't stay indoors, or you should get a doctor's appointment"
"Let's go outside or else we won't see another weather like this for another fortnight!"
"Let's go have a BBQ outdoor in the park, even if the grass is still wet!"
Shukie October 4th, 2008, 03:53 AM Well, you have to make the most out of any day the sun shines, because you don't get many of them. I can see why you don't really mind, as I'm guessing you have the prospect of moving back to a sunnier climate. I can tell you I'm getting pretty sick of this depressing weather though. Would you be able to live in a climate like this for the rest of your life?
MILIUX October 4th, 2008, 04:05 AM Would you be able to live in a climate like this for the rest of your life?
I don't think my mentality about the Dutch weather has been altered because of my prospect of returning to Australia. But rather, i integrated well with my local Dutch friends and everyone's struggle with nostalgia.
I don't know about other Dutch, but i do like a challenge when travelling to arbeit or universiteit. It makes everyday interesting since i do observe how other Dutch locals continue their lives in this weather.
In my opinion, the Dutch weather is fundamental in shaping the Dutch culture and its philosophies. It blends well with the traditional Calvinist menality about being anonymous egalitarian in public space. Every Dutchmen would be effected by rain and because of its unpredictability, it forces everyone to reach for the bottom of public image.
There are times i want to leave and go out to countries with real summer. In Holland, Summer usually is about 22 degrees and they call 30 degrees a heatwave. But Spain doesn't cost that much to travel and are readily available.
TOCC October 4th, 2008, 02:52 PM i was in amsterdam a couple of months ago, spent just under a week in central amsterdam, it was pleasant, i do have to admit that i was definetly not a fan of the weather.
Overall i didnt mind the city, thought it was good to see and obviously the canals and red-light district are pretty interesting, the city was quite exspensive and i remember the first 'hotel' i stayed at was a disgrace and i walked out and lost my deposit(this place would be shutdown in australia).
I personally couldnt live there though, it just didnt suit me.
MILIUX October 6th, 2008, 03:19 PM Of course it's expensive for tourists because the city centre within the confines of Prinsengract is a tourist trap. Backpackers would just rely on Albert Heijn for cheap fast foods and blow the rest of their budget on pots and beers. I pretty much halved my friend's expenses in Amsterdam because i know the local secrets in getting cheaper supplies and discounts. They saved a cracker, and with the those savings, we just blew it on extra travels... But if it was cheaper, just imagine how longer those backpackers will dwell in an already crowded city centre. It's not like the city needs more than 4.2 million tourists annually...
I liked Amsterdam simply because life was simpler then. The more effort i put into my activities, the same, or more, i will get back in return. But in Sydney, it's the other way. I have to put more effort to get back smaller return. Furthermore, locals would know if you're a tourist or not and will treat you accordingly. Plus, i don't feel i'm in this constant capitalist rat race about being forced to buy this and that. i.e. i was behaving utilitarian, like any locals.
With locals, the first conversation will be polite. Second conversation, they will be agitated. Third conversation, they ask why you're asking questions.. Americans would be chattery, so no wonder why they think the locals are rude in interrupting their conversation. I'm generally a direct person, so i would just say it as it is and not padder around the bushes.

MILIUX October 7th, 2008, 05:36 AM Great Pics! But is it always gloomy like that?
There is an ice-cream store called "Australian" and it took me months why it's branded that way. Stereotypically, the Dutch thinks about Australia as being sun-drenched continent where life is effortless... Even raising of the finger is supposedly considered hastily.
That stereotype reflects the Dutch people's love-hate relationship with the rain since 2/3 of the year would be overcast or precipitation.
Ironically, it is no wonder why there are very few Australians or Americans in the Netherlands. The rain puts them off and it's just so different...

Svartmetall October 7th, 2008, 08:12 AM And I thought New Zealand had the worst weather!
Depends on what you want from the weather doesn't it? Like I said in our Queen Street thread, the rain isn't half as heavy in Britain, but it is more constant despite the fact that the average amount of rain dropped is approximately half that dropped over Auckland! The humidity in Britain isn't half as bad as Auckland, but Auckland gets over double the amount of sunshine that London gets for example.
Pros and cons to both. I prefer gloomy weather and light drizzle rather than psychotic storms every now and again (and I don't like it when its too hot).
MILIUX November 18th, 2008, 06:45 AM Free bicycle for commuter
25 October 2008 - In a pilot, commuters will be offered free use of an OV-fiets (public transport bicycle) to travel to Amsterdam Zuid railway station. The aim of the pilot is to see whether the bicycles can be used more efficiently.
The pilot's target group are commuters from Amsterdam who work at least 32 hours per week and who travel to work by train from Amsterdam Zuid. If they use an OV-fiets instead of their own bicycle, they will no longer have to bother about finding a place to park the bicycle and about bicycle maintenance.
During the day, the same bicycles will be rented out to commuters who arrive at Amsterdam Zuid and work in the city. This way, the OV-fietsen will be used more intensively and fewer parking spaces for bicycles will be needed at the station.
Participants in the pilot will take the bicycle home at night and get to use the bicycle during the weekend as well. The pilot starts on 25 November. Those who are interested in participating can request information through info@ov-fiets.nl .
OV-fietsen are rented out to subscribers from stations and a few other locations for 2.85 euro per 20 hours.

THE Netherlands is to ban the growing and selling of magic mushrooms following the deaths of tourists.
The drug, which has a hallucinogenic effect, would be banned from December said the Dutch health ministry.
The death in March last year of a 17-year-old French girl who jumped from an Amsterdam bridge after taking hallucinogenic mushrooms had triggered a controversy in the country over the risks of such drugs.
No link was officially made between her death and the mushrooms but a majority in parliament called for a total ban on the drug.
Use of these mushrooms can "lead to unpredictable behaviour and risk-taking", the ministry said.
"The sale and possession of dried (hallucinogenic) mushrooms has been forbidden for a long time," the ministry said.
The ban would be extended to fresh magic mushrooms.
A report by Amsterdam health authorities in May said 92 per cent of incidents relating to magic mushrooms in the Dutch capital last year involved foreign tourists.
But another health report published in January 2007 said that while alcohol consumption led to 2050 incidents in 2005, magic mushrooms had caused only 70.
A total ban on all magic mushrooms should lead to the closure of so-called "smartshops" that sell them.
They have already announced that they will fight the decision in court.
MILIUX November 30th, 2008, 11:47 PM Birthplace of modern capitalism. The Dutch East Indies headquarter. Now, it's the University of Amsterdam's department building. The company which colonised many Caribbean countries, Indonesia and discovered Australia. Also contributed to the establishment of the world's first stock-exchange and the most powerful banking in its time.
Amsterdam was also the centre of information exchange. Various competing parties would come to Amsterdam to get the latest news in financial world to compete with its rivals. Furthermore, information was used for sabotaging competitors.
Abel Tasman, the explorer for the Dutch East Indies discovered Tasmania. Thus, the state is named after him. He also discovered New Zealand, which is named after the province of Zeeland.
