Contemporary Canadian Architecture

I find that there are so many great architectural projects going on in Canada yet many of us have not heard of it. I for one only visited the Quebec and Canadian Urban forum and so for me and many others like me; this thread should be a place to show all the Architectural projects in Canada. Not just any project though, we should try to show projects that are very very distinct and unique; not repetitive hi-rise design that can be found anywhere ;-)

So I will do the honors and start by showing a design that people will either like or hate it.

Kitchener City Hall
A national architectural competition attracting 153 entries from across Canada was held in 1989. The winning design was created by Toronto architect, Bruce Kuwabara; of Kuwabara, Payne, McKenna and Blumberg (KPMB).

Kitchener's City Hall opened in September 1993. The facility was awarded the Governor General Gold Medal for Architecture for excellence in architecture design in 1994. It includes municipal and government offices, public meeting rooms, a three storey rotunda suitable for large events, Williams Coffee Pub, a public art gallery, a reflecting pool in Civic Square which doubles as a skating rink in winter, and the Reflecting Studio, home of the city's summertime artist-in-residence.

Distinctive construction features of the building and its site include the use of many types of stone: Canadian granite, green slate from Wales and red sandstone from India. The building is configured with entrances at King Street, Young Street, and Duke Street. A central, two-storey circular public area houses the Council Chamber. Two main wings flow from this core: the Berlin Tower and the Ebytown Wing. Construction costs for the City Hall project were approximately $65 million. The land alone, consisting of an entire city block, cost just over $10 million.

Btw, cool idea. :okay: I have other submissions, but instead of just bombarding the thread, I'll spread them out a bit.

How recent must these projects be? Based on the last two projects I'll assume something completed a couple years ago is alright to post.

Some of the exciting architecture going up at the University of Toronto. The Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research:

and Norman Foster's Leslie L. Dan Pharmacy Building.

these pods are lecture halls:

the new Umbra shop on Queen Street:

It is a pretty "happening" time for new architecture locally... some more examples from this past summer:

the environmentally planned SAS building on King Street East:

and from the amazing rooftop patio for its employees:

my personal new favourite, the Royal Ontario Museum expansion:
