well i guess i'm the only person on this forum, but i think the new design is glorious, far better than calatravas effort. I like the exoskeleton design, it's simple and boxy whilst being very interesting. It almost pays homage to the WTC with this design. Tall and square is what american skyscrapers should be, doesn't mean they can't look good!

Ok finally some news. I guess it will be a much taller but different building though. We'll see.

From the NYPOST...

Frank Sciame purchased an additional 110,000 feet of air rights for the 80 South Street parcel along the East River.

The additional air power will bring the project, once slated for a Santiago Calatrava-designed townhouse cube tower, to 300,000 feet.

"It opens up a lot of possibilities," Sciame said, excited at the prospect. "We're considering developing it ourselves and have some international interest. We believe in the site and it makes it a much more viable building."

That's because it could have a much larger base more suited to a hotel, for instance.

"We have views now protected to the north, south and the East River," Sciame added.

According to Wikipedia:
Although 80 South Street has been approved by the city, the project was later canceled in April 2008. The building did not sell any one of its 10 multi-million dollar residential cubes.

New worlds tallest building?:clown:

I kid.

Still though, this project essentially just got half-again bigger. Should be interesting to see what Sciame comes up with to use the added air rights.

Yeah, citing Wikipedia here is like taking a high school natural science textbook to a supercollider and showing it to the nuclear scientists on duty. :-)

Yeah, citing Wikipedia here is like taking a high school natural science textbook to a supercollider and showing it to the nuclear scientists on duty. :-)

It's more like just being pointless because half the people who edit the relevant articles on Wikipedia are already on SSC, hence there's nothing new to learn.

It's great to see that a 80 South Street tower is far from dead and may still have an amazing design.

With a tower like that and increased developement in the local area, the chances of it getting done are much higher than before.

because the old tower has been cancelled. but i think we can change the title back to PRO for now. and maybe the name to "Waterfront Tower"?

who wants to live in a multi-million dollar cube? honestly, we're in the 21st century, it better be a sphere, prism, or at the very least a large spheroid plinth. with mood lighting

The building that refuses to die...hasn't!

The Downtown Express reports: "Santiago Calatrava’s stacked townhouse cubes may not have come tumbling down after all. Despite reports earlier this year that Seaport developer Frank Sciame was looking to unload the 80 South St. property — and dump Calatrava’s acclaimed tower idea of staggered condo cubes — the situation is actually quite the opposite. 'It's very much alive and active,' Sciame told UnderCover this week."

that would be a really unique building... that would change nyc skyline ... but the place i dont really think that is a nice place to live.. maybe if that building was a commercial one..
or if this building was constructed next to the central park... Lincoln square...
maybe that would help the buyers to come ....

hmm, has anyone mentioned the architect of the new proposal? i think not (:

does anyone know?

too bad the calatrava version was cancelled... it would have been a milestone in contemporary architecture, not necessarily by its design (though that as well, of course) but more so by its unique concept... i hope after the bad times are gone some big businessman / developer proposes a new site for the project, or at least something similar in type (:

Thanks! ...but I'm not sure if the Calatrava proposal will ever see the light of day again. The General Growth Properties proposal was for a tower at South Street Seaport which would have anchored a large hotel/retail/entertainment complex at pier 17 possibly involving the transfer of air rights from 80 South St. (correct me if I'm wrong). The key stumbling block for the Calatrava design was being able to secure financing for a development that requires units selling for upwards of $30 million each. In Lower Manhattan. During a global economic slowdown. Pre-sales were poor and the concept was scrapped in favor of a design with more conventional floorplates and lower costs. But we'll see what happens, nothing would be better than to see someone figure out how to revive that Calatrava tower!

chjbolton
October 22nd, 2010, 04:15 AM
^^ Again, I couldn't agree more! But you've said it right there: such a design in Lower Manhattan... Not a chance. I just don't see it happening, with or without a credit crunch for that matter. On the Upper East Side they could pull it off I guess.
Anyway... Glad to see someone else (a lot wealthier) than just you and me seem to have some interest for that lot ;)

I am confuse, is it looks good after finish. i don't thing so. nice design but i thinks it looks good only in paper not real. let's see. no cool design unique design, i think it's not like corporate building. over all good design and planning.
