For those that haven't read about it already - this will be a mixed-use building, combining the 259-room, 4-star Hotel Palomar and 121 condo units, as well as a "signature restaurant" operated by the hotel.
I figured this thing ought to have its own thread now that stuff is going on - I've heard reports that caissons are being drilled already. If we can get some photo confirmation, I'll bump this up to U/C.
Chicagophotoshop October 22nd, 2007, 03:33 PM  although I kinda liked the park, I'm always up for a new building. this sucker should be U/C this week. case foundation is putting the cranes together as we speak..
I will post photos when I get home. I live next door ;)
Chicagophotoshop October 22nd, 2007, 03:35 PM I'd love to know how much units start at....
InTheValley October 23rd, 2007, 01:17 AM I wish that they were buidling this structure across the street in that empty parking lot. I liked driving by and seeing the people use that space. The AMA building is a cool structure and it would have been nice not to cover it up. I am n ot being a "Nimby" in any way shape or forum, I would just rather see parking lots covered up instead of the one cool place that actually had some atmosphere. Now 680 rush is a place that should be covered up (not a good) public place.

Second City October 24th, 2007, 07:45 PM Nice, I like it!
dropdeaded209 October 24th, 2007, 09:16 PM sad to lose that park, though. it really was a nice open space in the city and complimented the AMA building really well. let's just hope this project adds something nice to the immediate vicinity.
InTheValley October 24th, 2007, 09:51 PM ^^Chicagophotoshop....Thank You for the pictures, eventhough I walk by this site almost everyday. It is great to see a good picture of it.

yea I agree, I was shocked when I heard about this. I noticed something was up when I saw a truck, drilling for soil samples. but never saw anything on this board until the place was fenced off. never heard of a proposal or approval.
when I first moved to the area, I figured this park would be something permanent. the closest park now is millennium I think.
but o well, its in a great location we'll see how it plays out.
........no problem valley.....I hope to add many more as progress continues....

If you considered this a "park" then the Trump plaza should satisfy you, although it's a few blocks away. Also check out Olive Park next to Navy Pier - it's not as far as Millennium/Grant, if you want some green space.
cbotnyse October 25th, 2007, 12:59 AM If you considered this a "park" then the Trump plaza should satisfy you, although it's a few blocks away. Also check out Olive Park next to Navy Pier - it's not as far as Millennium/Grant, if you want some green space.Trump park is only a half a block away and it will be shared with my building. (405 Wabash). I'm very happy about that.
I didnt really care for this park because honestly everytime I walked through it, it was filled with many homeless and shady people.
bobablob October 25th, 2007, 03:54 AM The truth is that the homeless did impact the appeal of this park, but that's more to do with the proximity to the Red Line than the nice benches. I think the open space enhanced the beauty of the AMA building and it's a loss to the city to have this space filled in. That said, at this point I kind of like the design of the Palomar.
Chicagophotoshop October 25th, 2007, 04:12 AM ^^^^ I agree with all 3 posts above this. that park wasnt anything to hang out in. and was always filled with homeless people. I was actually approached by one once sitting on a bench. he said some shady things and I bailed. the park was more of something to look at. but I wont miss it. and trump is actually at the foot of my building. I cant wait to enjoy that park.

i_am_hydrogen December 10th, 2007, 10:20 PM Do you have any photos you can post?
Chicagophotoshop December 10th, 2007, 10:36 PM ^^ not anything new. will have to wait till next weekend, its already dark by the time I get home from work on the weekdays. but when I drove past the other day, it appeared that the case cranes were gone.

geoff_diamond January 29th, 2008, 06:43 PM Hmm - I'm much less annoyed with this project after seeing this rendering :).
Still very sad about the park, though.
cheeps January 29th, 2008, 07:29 PM ^^
I agree about the park. I'm torn. I like the design but the location makes this area look very New Yorkish in terms of density.

That would be a good thing.

spyguy September 20th, 2008, 06:46 PM Maybe slow but I don't think it's on hold.
CHIsentinel September 20th, 2008, 07:39 PM ^^Building is definitely NOT on hold - Palomar hotel will be most likely be out for Construction bidding by December (occupies first 16-17 floors) - the rest is most likely corporate housing.

After you pointed out the fact that my saturation seemed a bit off, I just assumed that my image sensor was junky and that was that and there was nothing I could do about it. Last night I decided to go through the menus on my camera and, lo and behold, my saturation was set to "plus". I put it back down and, as you can see, the results are much better photographs. So thank you for pointing that out earlier; otherwise, I would likely have not tried to adjust anything.

Chicagoago April 30th, 2009, 08:59 PM It looks awesome walking up Michigan Ave as you go north across Wacker Drive and the river. It kinda fits in at a cool angle between Trump and the buildings in there. You get a really cool backdrop of density among the different buildings.
Jibba April 30th, 2009, 09:48 PM The perfect antidote to that nasty Hilton. I'm excited about this one.

ChicagoismynewBlog September 1st, 2009, 09:26 PM As much as I would have liked to see the AMA park/plaza stay, I think Palomar turned out 100% better than I expected it to.
Plus, if you look at Olympia Center, it looks as if the Water Tower Place is just a nice little addition to the top of Olympia. They line up perfectly.

nrioq September 28th, 2009, 09:32 PM ^^^ Nice shot spyguy. Palomar looks sharp. I like the nonbeigeness of it too.
netgeek77 September 29th, 2009, 05:11 AM I agree. It's nice to have a little contrast in that area.
honest86 September 30th, 2009, 05:23 AM I really hope when they finish this project they clean up the sidewalks on Illinois St. going beneath Wabash.

Heather and Yon
By Penny Pollack & Jeff Ruby
Heather Terhune, who has run the kitchen at Atwood Cafe (Hotel Burnham, 1 W. Washington St.; 312-368-1900) for ten years, plans to leave her post at year’s end to helm the upcoming Sable Kitchen & Bar, a 158-seat “gastro lounge” adjacent to the Hotel Palomar Chicago (505 N. State St.). (Both the Burnham and the Palomar are managed by the Kimpton Group; a Kimpton employee will step up to replace Terhune at Atwood.) “They’ve told me Sable will be more of a 1940s throwback,” says Terhune, who started as a pastry chef at 312 Chicago. “I’m going to do fun and innovative food using local farmers. I’m making my own pretzels, making my own sausage and mustard—things I wasn’t able to do at Atwood due to space constraints.” Expect her open kitchen to turn out shareable bar snacks, normal-sized entrées, vegetarian/vegan options, and whimsical desserts (butterscotch pot de crème, a milkshake and cookies).
