FrancisXavier August 14th, 2006, 04:23 AM Korean investors in De Oro go into real estate
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews/3 Aug) -- A group of Korean investors are planning to put up a 100-door apartment in the uptown area of this city as more and more of their nationals are coming over to settle for good. Mayor Vicente Y. Emano, as quoted by the Philippine Information Agency, said he is scheduled to meet with the 70 Korean investors to discuss the planned apartment. Emano said that the Korean businessmen are spending billions of pesos for their real estate projects, like the construction of luxurious apartments and villas near the Korean and Filipino-owned Hotel Koresco at the Pueblo de Oro Township.
The mayor said that the influx of Korean and other foreign investors speaks of the growing trust and confidence placed by the international business community on the city government as an investor-friendly local government unit.
Aside from the Korean investments, two other giant construction companies in the country have reportedly expressed interest to undertake the reclamation of more than 280 hectares of land in two barangays in the city.
These projects include a 60-hectare reclamation project in Bonbon and another 160 hectares in Barangay Bayabas.
Once completed, Emano said, these reclamation projects are ideal for warehouses, subdivisions and private wharves, among others.

Global davao, yeah, i agree, sobrang ewan talaga ang Lumbia airport, but it looks just like any other domestic airport in the country(Iloilo,Bacolod,Baguio, ect)
The new airport construction is now on horizontal works. Next year pa daw ang vertical works, and expected to be done ny 2010.. "sigh", tagal pa nun.
i don't think SM will be affected by the time airport operations transfer to LIA. Coz SM's market is basically the people living in subdivisions around it.
papable August 14th, 2006, 10:03 AM I had already heard about the Laguindingan airport proposal even before the proposals for Iloilo and Bacold airports. Now the two Visayas airports are nearing completion while the LIA is still in the "works," and the expected opening date is 2010 yet. What caused the long delay?
And it is true that the owners of the new airport lot are the Ayalas who donated it (actually part of a huge land bank)? They will surely make a lot of money from the surrounding lots, when the airport becomes operational.
FrancisXavier August 14th, 2006, 10:08 AM yeah, ayala donated a huge lot just to jumpstart this project...

boju August 19th, 2006, 01:56 AM On building and burning bridges
By Joe Pallugna / August 14, 2006
AS Cagayan de Oro City moves into the next two decades, there is nothing comparable to the extreme necessity and outright usefulness than the bridges that cross our great river.
And as in any civilization, development always start on riverbanks. Rivers are not only sources of food for fishermen and irrigation water for farmers, they also provide for the best way of travel, transport and trade.
Any great city in the world has a great river. New York, Shanghai, Manila, Hongkong, Paris, London and all the great cities of the world have major rivers. And when they pour out into the sea, these great cities have great ports for ships to dock into and unload and load their cargoes and passengers.
This is so true with Cagayan de Oro. We have a great river and a great port area. So we have this great opportunity.
So Mayor Dongkoy Emano can never be wrong in building bridges over Cagayan de Oro River with earnest to capitalize on the mode of water transport. As one realizes, rivers and seas constrict the means to transport if left to themselves. Siltation inevitably ensues. Yet, these waterways can be exploited to the fullest if used as major transways.
By building bridges, the city is forced to make a comprehensive plan for dike building along the riverbanks, for dredging to avoid siltation and uncontrollable flooding and river-overflowing and the general plan of river-control and management.
Along these plans include beautification of the river embankments and the riversides where people could jog, play, watch the water flow and keep their peace. They then appreciate more the beauty of our river.
Thus building bridges across Cagayan de Oro River is a very wise and timely idea.
After the Ysalina Bridge, the second is the Marcos Bridge, third is the Pelaez Bridge, fourth is the Puntod Bridge, fifth is the Carmen-Macasandig Bridge, and sixth is the J.R. Borja-Carmen Bridge. From two bridges to six bridges in less than 10 years! That’s a great feat, really.
Only one with a vision for development and progress could think of that. Not even the past three mayors of our city did ever envision building bridges over our great river. Not one even accomplished one beyond getting millions of pesos for a feasibility study that never got off the ground––although all the P23 million have already disappeared days before election day in 1998.
And bridges really are that important. That’s why Israel bombed all the bridges leading to and out of Lebanon and why the US forces bombed all the bridges vital to travel in the invasion of Iraq.
Bridges really are that important. I’m sure the Spanish government thought of this importance when they decided to finance the JR Borja-Carmen Bridge project.
With six bridges in all, the comprehensive plan for river control, dredging, dike-building, siltation management, boat-traffic, safety standards and economic infrastructure-building will be finalized. This is the end-result of all these bridge-building binge of Mayor Emano.
I’m sure there is no better way. Building bridges has always been desired by civilizations past. From the Tigris and Euphrates rivers did civilization begin. From Cagayan de Oro River will our city move into the next century. ...
With these passable bridges now, two more to be completed in the next couple of months and another bridge courtesy of Spain, we are on the road to progress six times faster. ...

boju August 19th, 2006, 02:12 AM Alam mo Francis, maganda siguro kung magpropose sila ng mga vehicukar overpass sa mga junctions ng National high-way. Like the following: Patag road-Bulua higway, Westbound Terminal-National higway, Kauswagan Junction, Gusa highway-JR Borja road, Puerto highway-Bukidnon junction. These vehicular overpass deliver safe and fast travel to Cagayan de Oro's main highway.

boju August 30th, 2006, 02:56 AM Laguindingan Airport Update: Bidding Process for Access Road Starts, Construction slated for January 2007
Some 10 companies have expressed interest in constructing the 4.3 km P188-million access road to the Laguindingan Airport
Bidding Process for Access Road Starts, Construction slated for January 2007
By Mike Banos
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – No less than ten companies have signified their intention to participate in the bidding for the access road to the soon-to-be constructed Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental.
Engr. Della P. Capicenio, manager of the Laguindingan Airport Development Project (LAPD) said the invitation to bid has already been published as mandated by law, and the evaluation and actual bidding set for the next 60 days.
The 4.3 kilometer access road’s entry point will be the Bgy. Poblacion in Laguindingan with its exit point in Bgy. Kibaghot, also in the same municipality.
“Since it is a national road, it will be a four-lane highway which shall form part of the airport complex and will be constructed and maintained by the Dept. of Transportation and Communication’s Air Transportation Office (ATO),” Capicenio said.
The budget for the P188-million project is already part of the line item included by the DOTC for the duration of the construction phase of the LAPD from 2007-2010, she added.
“So far, President Arroyo has already released P530-million to the LAPD for this year,” Capicenio said.
At present, the LAPD project office is focusing on land acquisition, specifically the administrative and judicial titling of lots which have already been acquired and still to be acquired under the project.
“We have already completed acquisition of 90% of the 265 hectares (has.) needed for the project,” Capicenio said. “The balance to be acquired consists mostly of lots belonging to Ayala Corporation.”
Although they have asked Ayala Corp. to donate the additional 94 has. for the airport and 1.7 has for the access road to the government, the Ayala Board of Directors has reportedly expressed its preference to have the DOTC secure it by expropriation, Capicenio said.
The company has previously donated 88 hectares to the LAPD but the additional 96.7 has. of its property which covers Laguindingan and Alubijid municipalities are now needed after the total area for the LAPD was expanded from the previous 167 hectares.

Yes, the plan is an International Airport thats why they find a location wherein can meet the international standard since Cagayan de Oro airport location could not be expanded due to terrains and nearby developed residential areas.

Will, there's no exact rendering or news about how big or how many stories is it. As of now for the past 10 years of planning, they'll only say an International Standard Airport to be constructed soon.

FrancisXavier February 19th, 2007, 05:09 PM Gov’t may seek ODA for railway plan in Mindanao
Inquirer
Last updated 06:30am (Mla time) 02/08/2007
OFFICIAL development assistance (ODA) may be tapped for a plan to build a $540-million Mindanao Railway System, an official of the Department of Transportation and Communication said.
Saudi Arabia, South Korea and China have expressed interest in the project, said Guiling Mamondiong, undersecretary for railway.
“But if private companies would like to undertake the project, they are most welcome to submit proposals,” Mamondiong said.
The feasibility study will be submitted to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) this month, he said.
According information on the NEDA online project-monitoring site, the Mindanao Railway System will link the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan and the Phividec Industrial Estate, Metro Iligan Regional Agri-Industrial Center, Alwana Business Park, Ayala Light Industrial Park, and FCDO Business Park.
“Although it is not a medium-term project, the government wants to at least start important works as early as possible, even if project completion would be beyond 2010,” Mamondiong said.
He said Cagayan de Oro-Iligan was the only industrial corridor in Mindanao.
The rail project will address calls of investors to improve Mindanao transportation facilities. Riza T. Olchondra, with INQUIRER.net

South Korea tech team finalizes plant inspection
THE technical team from Korea's largest steel company, Pohang Steel Corporation (Posco), arrived last February 13 here in Cagayan de Oro City.
The team, composed of engineers and other officials of the company, came for final evaluation of a prospective site of its nickel smelting plant at Phividec Industrial Estate in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.
Post your Valentine's Day greetings
City Mayor Vicente Emano said the investment would reach up to a whooping $1 billion, with an initial investment of $750 million once the firm pushes through with its huge project at the Phividec.
Emano is hoping that the said company will finally decide to invest here, owing to the city's conducive and investor-friendly atmosphere.
Posco originally wanted to invest in other areas in the country, but Emano said a business delegation from Cagayan de Oro and the province of Misamis Oriental managed to convince the firm to consider their options.
"Cheap labor costs, quality manpower, and complete modern facilities with full support from the local government are also advantageous to foreign investors," the city mayor added.
If the nickel smelting plant will be realized, this Korean investment is seen to contribute greatly to the economy of Northern Mindanao as well as to the island of Mindanao.
Posco is a 30-year-old company and the second largest steel manufacturer in the world that produces 28 million tons of crude steel per annum. (CIO)

FrancisXavier February 19th, 2007, 05:14 PM Mayor Emano approves P2.3M project in Balubal
by Rubelyn B. Yap/City Information Office
Date Published: 2007-02-16
City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano approved yesterday the P2.3 million allocation for the completion of the Balubal Nationalized High School.
In yesterday’s People to People Program (PPP) Mayor Emano approved the request of Brgy. Chairman Pablo Bactong for an additional funding to complete the construction of the 3-year old barangay high school. Barangay Balubal is a hinterland barangay in the eastern part of the city. High school students residing in the said barangay used to commute to neighboring barangay Agusan where the nearest barangay high school is located. With the opening of the Balubal Nationalized High School, students living in the said barangay are already spared the high cost of transportation and more elementary graduates are encouraged to pursue secondary education. Mayor Emano likewise ordered the City Engineering and Public Works Department to submit to him a program of works and costing of the road concreting from the National Highway to Balubal proper. Aside from the Balubal projects, Mayor Emano also disclosed that he already released the P16 million budget for the Calaanan road concreting from his 20% development fund budget last year. Another infrastructure project that Mayor Emano is set to approve before his term ends is the P1.2 billion Agusan parallel road that connects to Barangay Balubal and the J.R. Borja extension, providing easy access to A. Brown Company’s high-end subdivision in barangay Agusan. Mayor Emano added that the city government also got a national funding for the Tumpagon-Kaayunan bridge that connects Cagayan de Oro City and the town of Opol, Misamis Oriental. Once materialized, the bridge will be the 18th bridge implemented in the city under the President’s Bridge Program. Another major project that will be implemented early this year is the P400 million J.R. Borja Bridge funded by the Spanish government.

PPA inaugurates Access Control Center
By Abigail C. Malalis
THE billionaire port in Cagayan de Oro once again proved its objective of attaining zero accident and better service to the public in the port area here in Macabalan.
The P2-million budgeted Access Control Center is now fully developed and has been in existence for a year now and has been in full implementation since Tuesday during the inauguration.
The Gate 4 or the Access Control Center is the place where centralized processing of security and safety are being held and caters to the need of pedestrians other than passengers and non-cargo vehicles.
"This is to avoid the risks that pedestrians will be facing in their day-to-day undertakings in the port area," thus, said Jessica Angeles, executive assistant and PIO-designate of PPA.
"Cagayan de Oro is again the first to have a centralized access control center in the Philippines, and it is in this manner that public safety will always be guarded," Angeles added.
The Gate 4 of Access Control inauguration was also in cooperation with Oroport.
flymordecai February 22nd, 2007, 07:41 AM Woohoo, Cagayan de Oro. I hope the airport construction begins ASAP. It's up there with the Iloilo and Bacolod airports. Is CDO the next big thing in Mindanao?
FrancisXavier February 27th, 2007, 07:35 PM MCT validates free market, open competition for Mindanao ports hub system
By Mike Baños
The Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT) at the PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental was originally conceptualized to maximize Northern Mindanao's potential as the Philippines' gateway to the Land of Promise (and vice versa), catalyzing Northern Mindanao's role as domestic food basket and agri-industrial exporter. The MCT has been identified as a Mindanao flagship project, one of the key infrastructure envisioned to jump start the island's potential to reality.
For Mindanao to fully realize its full potential as the country's food basket, the cost of transporting agricultural inputs coming in and agro-industrial products going out of Northern Mindanao had to be reduced. Originally, the MCT was designed to complement the Philippine Ports Authority's (PPA) Cagayan de Oro Base Port in realizing this objective. It was constructed as a key infrastructure component of the Northern Mindanao Medium-Term Regional Development Plan, 2001-2004 and is now operated by the PHIVIDEC Industrial Authority (PIA). The Cagayan de Oro Base Port (Macabalan) is the busiest and the most congested of the Mindanao's principal ports, having reached 100% berth occupancy rate as early as 1996. PPA statistics show the average annual growth rate from 1995-2002 for cargo, passenger and ship calls are 3.4%, 3.7% and 0.07%, respectively.
As the entry and exit point for the most traded commodities of the four main regions of Mindanao, the Macabalan port was already straining its limits in infrastructure and wanting key ancillary facilities such as quay side gantry cranes, rubber tired gantry cranes, bulk storage and handling facilities, among others, to efficiently meet the rising demand.
Vessel turnaround, especially critical for those transporting grain and fresh produce, was affected. Expansion would have been the logical answer but for key constraints like traffic congestion in the access road, displacement of occupants in expansion areas, and a truck ban by the LGU. But even at its planning stage, the PPA already opposed the construction of the MCT Phase 1 project, most of which was to be funded by a US$ 85.34 million (PhP 3.24 Billion) soft loan under the Special Yen Loan Package from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).
The Japanese Embassy wanted the lines between the roles of the MCT and Macabalan Port clearly delineated before it approved the facility. The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Cabinet-level Infrastructure Committee (Infracom) pressed PPA to agree to its proposed roles and responsibilities between the two ports : all passenger ships with containerized and/or bulk/grains cargo would be handled by PPA at Macabalan port, while ships with purely containerized and/or bulk/grain cargo would be handled by PIA at the MCT.
But PPA demurred. On 18 December 2002, then PPA General Manager Alfonso Cusi informed PIA it could not enter into MOA because it would constrain further growth and competitiveness of the Macabalan port.
Cusi said it was inappropriate for PPA and PIA to delineate their respective roles and functions which are already explicitly defined in the charters of both government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs). Moreover, it would be the shipper or cargo owner who would ultimately decide which port to use based on their respective market considerations.
As a GOCC, PPA infrastructure investments are financed by its operations and not the General Appropriation Act (GAA) so NEDA cannot tell it what to do, even if NEDA had a seat in the PPA Board.
As things are turning out, PPA was right all along in adopting this stance, correctly pointing out that port users make the choice on which of the Macabalan or MCT to use based on their actual requirements. The PIA which manages the MCT says they are now receiving regular port calls from three shipping lines: Maersk-Filipinas, NMC Container Lines and Hamburg-Sud with Lorenzo Container Shipping Corporation soon to join them.
The MCT was conceived to fill the supply gap for an efficient cargo handling facility with its state of the art facilities and cargo handling equipment, It has been designed to be exclusively operated for fully-containerized and semi-containerized domestic and foreign vessels with an annual capacity of 270,000 twenty equivalent units (TEUs) for its Phase 1.
For the nine-month period covering January 1 to September 30, 2006, containerized cargo throughput at the Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT) totaled 24,949.33 TEUs. Taken together, the net throughput of Cagayan de Oro (Macabalan) base port and MCT shows a 5.7% rise in total TEUs of 8,535.33 despite the 11.03% drop (-16,414 TEUs) in containerized cargo at the Macabalan base port.
Domestic and foreign containerized cargo throughputs at both ports likewise reflects this trend: total domestic (inbound/outbound) in Macabalan dropped 10,381.5 TEUs (-7.7%) with foreign (import/export) likewise dipping 6,032.78 TEUs (-42.4%). However, in both instances, the decreased throughput in Macabalan port was made up for by the MCT: domestic cargo rose to 18,537.32 TEU's resulting to a net gain (less decrease in Macabalan port) of 8.535.33 TEUs (+5.7%) and foreign cargo showing similar gains with 6,412 TEUs resulting to a net gain (less decrease in Macabalan port) of 379.25 TEUs (+2.7%).
Participants to the 3rd Quarter Quarterly Regional Economic Situationer (QRES) hosted by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Region 10 office earlier this month noted foreign ship calls and trade in the government-owned base ports of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Ozamiz have decreased mainly due to Maersk Lines transfer to the MCT and the significant drop in imported dairy products used as raw materials in Nestle Phils. Inc. Cagayan de Oro plant.
A major reason for the transfer of containerized vessels to MCT has been its capability to unload a container van in about 2.5 minutes compared to 10 minutes for an ordinary port. With Oroport's refurbished gantry crane still inoperable almost two years after delivery, this translates to an actual 24 to 9 edge in container handling throughput for MCT. Although wharfage fees in MCT are higher than CDO Port, the almost 3:1 edge in cargo handling throughput directly translates to a faster turnaround time and significant savings in overall berthing costs.
Engr. Manuel Jamonir, Infrastructure Specialist with the Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) program, reiterated GEM's advocacy for three hub ports in Mindanao : North (MCT), South (either Davao or Gensan) and West (Zamboanga) in the light of this trend.
"Many share this advocacy," Jamonir said. "We can reduce the cost of shipping through economies of scale. We need the volume that would necessitate the deployment of bigger vessels since consolidation and inter-modal transport are among our key strategies."
For the MCT to get a bigger slice of that pie, Jamonir said PIA has to present the comparative cost in doing inter-modal from various origins in Mindanao.
If volumes from the south (i.e., Davao and Gensan, especially domestic) and from the east (Caraga) are transported to MCT, the total cost of domestic shipping would definitely come down, Jamonir added.
"This strategy could make Mindanao products very competitive in the domestic market especially in Metro Manila," he said.
Jamonir notes several foreign ships are still docking in the Port of Manila since Mindanao's volume for other foreign destinations is still limited. "We may not be able to avoid trans-shipment to Manila, but with the hub system, we can definitely lower the cost of the domestic component."

Anyway, CDO will even surpass Davao City in the near future in terms of income as what the American, European, Chinese, Indian, and Korean investors had already eyed and predicted. This kind of motion from them had already been supported by CDO's strategic location and mobility of its transportation and trade to be the hub of new investments ( both foreign and local), by CDO's booming regional factories and shopping centers of whole Northern Mindanao, and by CDO's aggressive peace in whole Mindanao region. Much more in the near future when CDO will become metropolis since Opol and Tagoloan are already MISOR municipal candidates to become cities. If these two would become cities, surely CDO will be metro. El Salvador City, which is nearby Opol, will be incorporated also.

boju May 26th, 2007, 03:54 AM ALI's first premier land development in Mindanao to be launched in Cagayan de Oro
By Mike Baños
Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) will launch its first Ayala Land Premiere (ALP) development in Mindanao on June 9, signaling ALI’s entry into the southern Philippines real estate market.
Dubbed Alegria Hills, the 53 hectare (ha.) high end residential subdivision lies 240 meters above sea level and approximately eight kilometers from the city proper. It is the first phase of a master planned 200 hectare property that straddles barangays Indahag, Macasandig and Camaman-an.
“It usually takes ALI two years from a project’s inception to fully develop it but we shall already be selling the first 95 lots before the year ends,” Tetta Baad, Vismin marketing and sales head, told media in a press conference following the blessing of its office at Limketkai Center Friday, May 18, 2007.
Although ALI officials did not divulge the opening price for the first 96 lots with an average size of 440 square meters, Ms. Baad assured it would be well within the means of their target market.
The project is a joint undertaking of ALI and joint development partners Manny Boniao and Ricardo Murillo. Started by the Boniao couple as a land banking project in 1993, they were joined by Mr. Murillo 20 years ago when he also became convinced of the development potential of the property.
“We chose ALI as our partner since it had the experience, track record and professionalism in the real estate industry,” Mr. Murillo said.
“Mayor Emano approached the Zobel brothers to have the project expedited,” said Ver dela Cerna, Vismin corporate communications and property management head.
Mr. Boniao cited the city government’s South Diversion Road and Emmanuel Pelaez bridge as concrete evidence of the city government’s all-out support for the project.
“Although this initiative was already in the drawing boards of previous administrations, it was Mayor Emano who actually implemented it as a strong show of support for investors,”Mr. Boniao said.
Mr. dela Cerna also clarified that the project is not getting any perks or incentives from the city government and insisted it go through the regular process of acquiring its PALC and development permits, having no desire to stir up any controversies like the brouhaha over the Huluga settlement.
“We have no technical proof there any archeological sites or artifacts within the property but we are willing to submit ourselves to any group which could prove this to us otherwise,” Mr. Ver said.
Toti de Guzman, project consultant, Marcos de Guzman Architectural Network, described Alegria Hills as inspired by “Organic Tropical Architecture.”
“The community of Alegria Hills shall blend with the philosophy of architecture that promotes harmony between human territory and the natural world through thematic designs that seek to be part of the unified whole,” Mr. de Guzman said, adding that the designs drew inspiration from the late American architecture Frank Lloyd Wright.
Other ALP projects include Ayala Alabang, Dasmarinas Village, Forbes Park Makati, Ayala Westgrove Heights, Ayala Greenfield Estates, Amara, Ayala North Point, The Residences at Greenbelt, One Serendra and Anvaya Cove.

The facelift of a new and modern Agora Public Market and Integrated Bus Terminal will soon begin.
This was announced by City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano after a local contractor submitted its project proposal to the city government to handle the reconstruction of the old Agora terminal in barangay Lapasan, this city. Mayor Emano said that the P250-million market redevelopment project will be built under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) scheme. Once completed, the new Agora public market and terminal will house a sprawling one-storey building complex for the terminal of buses plying the eastern side of the island of Mindanao, a spacious area for vegetable landing and a cold storage facility. Presently, City Planning and Development Coordinator Estrella Sagaral said they are still processing the necessary documents prior to the signing of the contract to be entered into between the city government and the project proponent. Mayor Emano hoped that the reconstruction job will kick-off in April this year as soon as the paperwork is in place. The redevelopment of the Agora Public Market and Integrated Bus Terminal aims to give market vendors, vegetable sellers and dealers, and stall owners in the area a comfortable and adequate place where could ply their trade, the city mayor stressed.

i'm really excited about this project. this would facilitate agora's much needed "facelift", masyado na kasing luma at madilim ang agora terminal not to mention ang public market. Hope this project will speed up the commerce on the surrounding areas of agora and make it another business district in the city. medyo underutilized pa kasi ang area bandang osmeña street tabi ng CU.
at isa pa, ito rin kasi ang terminal that i use when i go home to n. cotabato hehe :) :)
FrancisXavier June 5th, 2007, 02:30 PM hello bloodyred.. That's indeed a cool project.. i hope relocation of the squatters around follows. From the rendering, this new bus terminal would resemble the West Bound Terminal.. Would you know where the bus terminal operation would be diverted once the construction starts?
FrancisXavier June 5th, 2007, 02:35 PM ^^ ano nang update sa CICC? matatapos ba'yan sa completion date??
the construction of the CDOICC is ongoing, day and night.. so most probably by november, we shall be seeing a new landmark...:)

I have no idea @FrancisXavier, the East Bound Jeepney Terminal wouldnt be a good candidate for it's already in full capacity. I really have no idea, maybe I have to order my bubwits to work so i can get some juicy "insider" infos.

if not in East bound, cguro somewhere in Agora area lang din, or sa RTMI east Depo perhaps?

Agora area will be the most possible scenerio. There is an area there where most trucks coming from Bukidnon, Wao and Banisilan are parked. Malapit sa may mga warehouse maybe they can use that area. Or pwede rin ang area bandang wet market, actually malaki naman ang area ng agora. Ang one way road dun may three lanes if im not mistaken. :tongue4:
FrancisXavier June 5th, 2007, 04:23 PM bisan pa...for sure, jam packed na naman ang area na yan, just like the cogon area during the construction of the Public Market..
bloodyred June 5th, 2007, 04:37 PM ^^ Well, no pain no gain. We have to give up something to gain something. Pero sana nga matugunan ng city government ang temporary operation diversion ng terminal. Of course we wouldnt want to have horrendous traffic in that area. Public safety and passenger comfortability dapat ang main agenda. My gosh may ulterior motive ba? Im a user of that terminal eh hehe:okay: :okay:
FrancisXavier June 5th, 2007, 04:39 PM sinabayan pa ng asphalt overlaying sa Lapasan Highway - CM Recto... Hayy.. Good luck mga taga district 2.. hehe:)

]Hala! Tsada na pud ang Cagayan oi! Nice! Agora needs a facelift. Because its one of the busiest bus hubs in Mindanao (serving BXU-Caraga, Davao, Bukidnon, Wao and Cotabato/Tacurong). :okay:
And hopefully they'll have something for the comfort of the waiting passengers especially the night and early morning trips. (Like I experienced it first hand, arriving too early in CDO from DVO without any idea kon asa pwede mostambay).

West Bound Terminal(Iligan-Zambo route) has nice waiting area and cafeteria for waiting passengers.. Most probably they'd pattern this Agora facelift to it.

@FrancisXavier Are those buildings will qualify as skyscrapers? Excited lang kasi ako I want to see skyscrapers in our city. We deserve it, given our econimic growth. Those buildings sure are promising.
FrancisXavier June 6th, 2007, 03:50 PM as far as i know, a building has to be over 12 storeys to be called skyscraper. The hotel that a Korean investor is planning to build there is gonna be 16-20 storeys as per the news releases.
bariQ June 7th, 2007, 04:12 AM ^^ i hope that pushes through... I feel our city is trailblaizing but its very underrated IMO

akiba June 7th, 2007, 10:29 AM Some Highlights For CDO In Celebrating JUNE 12, 2007
3rd Week of December 1898---the Spanish went back to Spain. Spain sold Philippines for 20 million dollars to Americans. Cagayan de Misamis' Katipuneros celebrated the independence and tasted the the 15 months of freedom, peace, progress, and justice.
1900---Beginning of Philippine-American War.
---Cagayanon fighters met and had a blood pact in the Casa Real ( which is the hospital now across Gaston Park) to fight with blood and sweat and even to the last man.
---Tirso Neri and Joselito Casa Roa, the richest Cagayanons at that time, privately financed the Cagayan de Misamis' Resistance without national or Aguinaldo's help.
---Arm Factory was built at Puerto Hills.
---The Transportation Ship, a gift of Tirso Neri to his wife, Mercedes Neri, was donated to the Cagayanon fighters as their battleship for navy, having only 5 canons all.
---Francisco Abellanosa, a Cagayanon poet, musician, playwright, and actor composed the Cagayan de Oro, Our Pride, Our Beloved City. He used his talents to raise funds for the fighters by roaming all around Cagayan de Misamis thru sedacious, anti-American imperialism play, which he even acted himself.
1902---Battle of Agusan Hill. Captain Vicente Roa fought gallantly and died a martyr along with his men. All of them wiped out. Major Akut protected and escorted the escapade of Gen. Capistrano.
---Battle of Gusa. Gen. Capistrano totally escaped to Ala-e, Bukidnon and rallied Bukidnon warriors there on his side.
May 1902---Battle of Macahambus Hill led by Captain Apolinar Velez. Cagayanons won the battle, and the only major battle won throughout Philippine-American War. Many Americans died and only one Cagayanon died, Lieutenant Apolinario Nacalaban.
June 1902---Gen. Vamenta sent a warning signal to Apolinar Velez to leave Macahambus Hill once due to the planned massive attack by Americans as a vengeance. The fighters and their families jumped to Cagayan River and let the riverflow destined their safety.
July 1902---Gen. Vamenta underattacked by the superior Americans during the battle, a place which is now Vamenta Road, escaped to Lumbia meeting Apolinar Velez there.
---Velez again went back at American detachment (now MOGHS) at dawn, while Americans were sleeping. One of the Bukidnon warrior had cut the head of the American sentry and shouted a battlecry as their culture after killing an enemy; thus the Americans got ready and had hand to hand battle. Velez nearly collapsing to have victory ran away with few men.
---Major Tomasaco fought gallantly in the place now at High Ridge. He was captured and treated by American medical practitioners, but died few minutes later due to his fatal wound on his abdomen.
His companions escaped to Camaman-an where another battle took place lead by Gaerlan. Gaerlan was captured and died in exile in Guam.
Last week of December of 1902---Gen. Capistrano, the supreme commander of the resistance surrendered at Gusa.
----The Battle was over. Tirso Neri and Casa Roa had lost most of their fortunes.
----From then on, CDO became one of the peaceful cities in the Philippines.
Mga Malalakas and Very Brave ang mga Bayani natin!!! VIVA CDO!!!
These historical highlights i have posted now were actually happened before. Will they still extend the LKK Mall. Kasi based on your picture a part of the mall building is not circled. So maybe that multi-storey building will still be constructed:banana:
bariQ June 8th, 2007, 06:44 AM ^^ wow really? kumikita siguro ang ketkai no?
Sera June 8th, 2007, 07:06 AM ^^
Limketkai remains the Biggest & Most Developed Commercial Center in Mindanao, even with the entry of SM, the center is unparalled in terms of sales or foot traffic. So its only right that they build an Ayala, Araneta, Greenhills Mixed-Use type dev't for Cagayan de Oro.
FrancisXavier June 8th, 2007, 02:41 PM Will they still extend the LKK Mall. Kasi based on your picture a part of the mall building is not circled. So maybe that multi-storey building will still be constructed:banana:
yeah.. The structure parallel to Natasha's office is not on its existence. that perhaps is an extension of the South Concourse.
Sera June 8th, 2007, 03:02 PM ^^ Three major mall dev'ts will still be pursued. First is the multi-level 4th Quadrant LKK mall extension fronting Robinsons CDO, then the mall extension of Robinson's CDO going to the former CDO cockpit arena then the third one was the building fronting the Natasha building. All said & done the LKK Mall alone will probably have a Gross Leasable Area exceeding 200, 000 sq. meters after these dev'ts - Making it comparable to the bigger Manila malls of today
Sana gawin nalang sport zone yan as what I've read sometime in the news that the Golez (owner of Liceo de Cagayan) will develop that area to a sport zone. Mas maganda siguro kung ipagpaliban nalang ang Lanco mall and give way to Ayala ASAp to build mall. Kasi yung area yan malapit sa mga residential siguradong magkatrafic na to the high level ang Nazareth, Macasandig at Macanhan area kung may mall na dyan.....
bariQ June 9th, 2007, 07:05 AM ^^ yes I would prefer that too! dapat world class stadium! lumang luma na ang pelaez... so magiging dalawa na sport centers nila~!
bloodyred June 9th, 2007, 09:53 AM Guys, I found this article on American Chronicle. It highlights CDO's competitiveness, fast growing economy and bright future. Although medyo luma na ang article it still sparked my intrest. Im sure matutuwa nito sa @akiba :D :D
Cagayan de Oro: Still the hottest prospect for business in Mindanao
Mike Banos
April 5, 2006
Northern Mindanao (Region 10) continues to accelerate as the island?s biggest and fastest growing regional economy. From 5.06% in 2003, it grew 6.04% in 2004, contributing 27.17% to Mindanao?s total production with the highest share of the island?s gross domestic product. Besides having the highest GRDP in Mindanao, its per capita GRDP is the third highest in the country, indicating a growing middle class and a general improvement in the standard of living regionwide.
?Cagayan de Oro continues to be the fulcrum and center of economic activity in Northern Mindanao,? said Ruben Vegafria, president of the Cagayan de Oro chamber of commerce and industry (Orochamber).
Known as the City of Golden Friendship, two of the Philippine?s leading think tanks perceive vast potentials beyond the fabled warmth and hospitality of Cagayan de Oro city and its residents.
Roberto de Vera, author and regional studies director of the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P), cites Cagayan de Oro as the best positioned for future growth and investments among 23 leading urban regional cities of the Philippines.
In his 2000 paper ?Investing in Regional Cities: the Next Big Thing,? de Vera describes Cagayan de Oro as the gateway and regional shopping center to the eight cities and five provinces of the booming Northern Mindanao region.
Although it ranked only 16th among the 23 cities in the study in Gross City Domestic Product (GCDP) with P4.93 billion, it led all others in investments with P16.5 billion. It was also the only city in Mindanao among the top five cited by the study in investments posted with the Board of Investments (BOI) in 1999.
Cagayan de Oro is the capital city of Northern Mindanao, which attracted P19.22-billion investments in 2005, 38% higher than the P13.965-billion recorded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in 2004. A total of 197 firms registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2005, 14% more than last year, with paid-up capital increasing 13% to P70.9 million from 2004.
Cagayan de Oro was also cited in a 2000 study by the Washington Sycip Policy Forum -- a think tank of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) -- because of its "focused vision for its economic future.?
The study said Cagayan de Oro's competitiveness was enhanced by its strong economic ties such as with the Northern and Central Visayas regions, Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor (CIC), and the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).
More recently, AIM Policy Center?s ?Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project 2003? ranked Cagayan de Oro third overall (1st in Mindanao) in urban competitiveness among 13Mid-Sized Philippines Cities included in the study.
The study covers 50 cities nationwide and uses both ranking and scoring methods that rate Philippines cities vis-?is seven major drivers of competitiveness: cost of doing business, dynamism of local economy, linkages and accessibility, quality of human resources and training, infrastructure, responsiveness of local government to business needs, and quality of life. Scores for each of the seven indicators were converted into a 10-point scale based on national and global benchmarks.
Cagayan de Oro scored high in the following: dynamism of the local economy (3rd, 6.53); human resources and training (3rd, 6.84), responsiveness of local government to business needs (3rd, 6.13), infrastructure (2nd, 6.17). Together with its third place rank for Mid-Sized Philippine Cities (first among five in Mindanao), and overall urban competitiveness score (6.18), its rankings and scores indicate it already enjoys above average competitiveness but still has room for improvement, and hence accommodate new players.
Another unique feature of Cagayan de Oro is how its strong real estate property development is balanced by inter-regional infrastructure development such as the Mindanao Container Port, and widening of its Iligan-Cagayan de Oro-Bukidnon Road (ICBR), the road artery which links it to key regional satellite growth centers.
With over 100 subdivisions containing 80,000 lots covering over 1,000 hectares and counting, the real estate boom in the city has been tempered by recently completed inter-city infrastructure such as the construction of an additional bridge across the Cagayan river, and the East and West coast public utility terminals which have eased the city's traffic gridlock.
Which is just as well, because although Cagayan de Oro city itself ?officially? only has half a million residents, it serves a consumer base of well over three million people covering the five provinces (Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Occidental) and eight cities (Cagayan de Oro, Gingoog, Iligan, Malaybalay. Oroquieta, Ozamiz, Tangub and Valencia) of Region 10 (Northern Mindanao) as its regional shopping center.
Already, SM City and rival Big R Super Center have set up mixed-use shopping malls to rival Limketkai and local titans Ororama and Gaisano which all boast of department stores, concessionaires, national food chains and cinemas equal if not better than similar stores in other regional centers like Cebu, Bacolod and Davao. More recently, specialty stores like CITI Hardware, Robin?s Home Depot and Pilipinas Makro have set up shop for more segmented clientele.
Next online is an ambitious P4.5-billion ?satellite city? of the Ayala Group of Companies in Barangay Indahag, whose groundbreaking is set this December. Plans for the 200-ha. mixed-use business complex include modern and high-end sports and recreational facilities, a full-range of low-cost to high-end residential subdivisions and a shopping mall. Another similar project on the East Coast of the city which was previously placed in the freezer due to legal difficulties is about to be thawed out and fast-tracked to the microwave anytime.
Besides wholesales and retailers, light and medium industries are also finding Cagayan de Oro and its satellite areas an ideal home with its mix of affordable industrial parks, reliable and affordably priced utilities, and central location linked to the rest of the country and the ASEAN region with seamless transportation and communications.
The 3,000-hectare PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate-Misamis Oriental is the country's largest, with the 200-hectare First Cagayan de Oro Business Park and the 80-hectare Alwana Business Park now online. Three others are in the pipeline: Laguindingan Industrial Park, El Salvador Economic Zone, and Gingoog Special Economic Zone.
Already, 19 light and medium industries are operating in Cagayan de Oro, the largest of which are Del Monte Philippines, Inc. and Nestl?hilippines, Inc.'s ASEAN regional manufacturing center for milk powder. Another 30 or so industries are operating in the Phividec Industrial Estate-Misamis Oriental.
In large part due to this mix of industrial infrastructure and locational advantages, exports topped US$541.424-million in 2005, up a hefty 18% over 2004?s US$459.125-million. Downstream industries, taking advantage of the city's proximity to the agriculture powerhouse Bukidnon, churned out an increasingly diverse array of products to complement the region's predominantly coconut-and-pineapple export base. Largely as a result of these, regional employment stood at 94.6%, also higher than the national figure of 92.6%.
Another reason for the continued increase in exports and gross city domestic product are Cagayan de Oro's recent and planned transportation and communications projects through which the lifeblood of this regional dynamo flows. Already served by five telephone local exchange centers (LECs), four mobile phone companies, and ten internet service providers (ISPs), it is riding high on the wave of convergence sweeping the country?s communications industry with voice, text, data and video seamlessly inter-weaving through land lines, mobile phones, the internet, cable TV and wireless.
So far, the city already has three call centers : Link2Support, the city?s first at Pueblo de Oro IT Park, TradeTel Corp. in Carmen and Arriba in Limketkai Center with a total capacity of 469 seats providing medical transcription, software development and tele-servicing and product support services. Another IT park is planned for the Alwana Business Park while another international call center has just signified its intention to operate here.
However, what is expected to bring the erstwhile fastest growing of Philippine cities into the big leagues are projects not yet quite in the pipeline but would inevitably be realized due to the inexorable pressure of market forces.
?Once it?s a potential, it?s bound to happen,? says Edward V. Argayoso, president of the city?s oldest appraisal firm. ?It becomes a matter of price.?
Among these are the controversial sale and transfer of the Cagayan de Oro City Hall, the sale and development of the 150-has. Cagayan de Oro airport complex at Lumbia, the proposed sale and transfer of the Misamis Oriental provincial capitol complex to a new location outside Cagayan de Oro, and the sale and transfer of the Cagayan de Oro City Central School complex along Velez and Yacapin streets.
Argayoso notes all these projects are at the disposition of cash-strapped local and national governments. If market forces continue to exert upward pressure on the market prices for these prime properties, it?s inevitable they would soon be up for development in one way or another.
Since the Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT) came online last year, two more flagship infrastructure projects are edging nearer to the pipeline: the P5.8-billion Laguindingan airport in Misamis Oriental and the P2.63-billion Tubod-Tangub bridge in Lanao del Norte-Misamis Occidental.
Though both are viable projects mainly hampered by funding difficulties, national, regional and local leaders are working closely together to find innovative alternatives which can bring them online in the next 5-7 years.
Not the least, the leisure industry appears to be crossing even political and ideological lines as Cagayan de Oro has been relatively spared the violence which has rocked Mindanao's urban centers lately. Although its peace and order situation is by no means impeccable, these are more in the nature of petty crimes that come with progress, and not the wholesale bombings and killings many have come to associate with Mindanao.
The most logical explanation for this is multi-cultural harmony: Despite the diversity of beliefs and ideological convictions, residents share the same admiration and affection for the City of Golden Friendship, the city that has become a home to migrants and ever-increasing number of visitors over the years.

Don't worry. I think building a modern sports-complex has been also part of the plan of Ayala. My father said this to me.
Sa 360 hectare lot owned by Ayala within CDO, I think mangyari talaga yun in the near future. :) Let's just be patient for it.

E2 lang ang masasabi ko. Maraming residents sa lower Carmen, Kauswagan, and Bayabas na nagreklamo na "SM, Robinsons, Gaisano, and Ororama malls are too faraway for them. Gus2 nga nila na matapos na ang road sa Nazareth para matayuan na ng bagong mall so that it will be easy for them to shop na.
I think even Landco will put a mall nearby the new bridge site, Ayala will still pursue in building its mall. Matigas talaga ang Ayala, and they are so aggressive in implementing its projects now because 1st pa nila sa Mindanao to pour multi-billion investments, lalo na dito sa CDO, whose population is the fastest among non-metro highly-urbanized cities and most of all whose peace and order is still stable despite the spreading rumors of violence in Mindanao. Sa laki ng lupain nila, sayang naman kung hindi nila lagyan ng mall dahil lang sa Landco?
Well building also a sports-complex has been already part of Ayala's plan here in our city. :)

There's no way SM could expand in the uptown. Their 5-hectar lot in Pueblo de Oro buisness park is fully occupied. Except for north open parking though.

Yeah, Landco is based in Davao. The plan has been Ironed long long ago but the implementation stilll hangs. Anyway, should all end well, this Landco Mall shall rise far back of the cathedral. Right beside the u/c Carmen-Nazareth bridge. Currently, Ayala is developing a High end residential. But part of the master plan is a retail establishment. As to when? only time can tell. Welcome here at SSC. Hope to exchange thoughts with you in the coming days @emeritus.

Hey FX, how nice if Landco was based in Davao- Davao would be so proud to host them if they did but this real estate company only has many projects in Davao and so it looked like the city is their home base. FYI, Landco is based in Parañaque City.

However, the civil society must always formulate a public opinion for our elected leaders. In this light, I hold my ground that our precious land should not be commercialy used by outsiders, to such extent, but limited to, if there is no other choice. kung ako lang ha, Economic abundance and wealth indicator should not primarily be based upon micro indicators and structural development alone. Though a posted increase in economic indicators is highly appreciated, never the less, this should be assessed as to who owns the volume of money generated. Good if the volume of net income goes to the Lumads but what if the Tagalogs? This means that a large volume of the posted money goes back to Manila living us lumads with the scraps. Wura man sad ta ni balik eskwela ani da... POOLING is the keyword to the future, or shall I say cooperativism among lumads. Cagayanon ka talaga my friend. Being too radical is CDO's long-time blue print against Manila's or NCR's imperialism. So don't blame Luzon coz it's already generalized, but Manila or NCR alone instead. Outside NCR, Luzon's provinces don't like her imperialism. Sos Reeeyan, magkasinabot ta dri. Anyways ur ryt! But let's not be too radical here. let's forget it from now on. Let's pursue not only CDO's progress, but whole Mindanao as well. NCR will even bend down her knees and worship us, asking for our blessings like an ill-fated man asking God's blessing.

akiba June 11th, 2007, 04:33 PM Ang Katarungan—Cagayan de Oro City”s first news weekly
Ang Katarungan (The Reason) is the first newspaper to be established in Cagayan de Oro City. It was printed in letterpress and was handset.
Established on July 1, 1903, Ang Katarungan was founded by the Neri brothers—the late former Misamis Or. Rep. Ramon B. Neri and former Misamis Or. Gov. Vicente Neri San Jose.
Ang Katarungan initially was published in Cebuano, the local dialect and was a 4-page tabloid printed by an old-type Minerva printing press and was handset. Its first issue came out with 300 copies, a rather big circulation during the days of the early American period.
In 1926, Ang Katarungan changed its format. It became a bilingual—English-Cebuano news magazine in 16 pages.
Except for the interruption from two fires in 1937 and 1940 and World War II, the paper came out regularly up to the present making its claim as the oldest existing newspaper in this city valid.
The two fires in 1937 and 1940 destroyed the paper’s office and printing facilities. However, these setbacks did not dampen the publishers of the paper. Through the help of their friends and loyal subscribers it managed to put up its printing facilities again and resumed publication.
But when World War II erupted, the Japanese closed down the publication in 1942. When Liberation came in 1945, bombs destroyed the printing facilities of Ang Katarungan and again it had to literally begin from nothing.
On July 17,1948 with Vicente Neri as its publisher-editor Ang Katarungan resumed publication. The issue featured stories on the eruption of Mt. Hibok Hibok volcano in the island province of Camiguin, which was still then a part of Misamis Oriental.
It also carried advertisements of commercial establishments and subdivision lots for sale of the Nazareth subdivision (the city’s first subdivision, now one of the city’s barangays).
The newspaper later went back to being a tabloid when Augusto Neri, son of Vicente Neri, one of the founders of the newspaper assumed as publisher-editor in the 60’s.Augusto F. Neri or AFN as he was known also served as an elected ember of the Cagayan de Oro City Council.
The paper, now renamed as Ang Bag-ong Katarungan comes out every Saturday in four pages only due to economic difficulties according to its publisher. It is still printed in letterpress and earns mostly from judicial notices.
Upon the death of Augusto F. Neri in 1982, his wife Isidra P. Neri took over as publisher of the paper while his son Atty. Augusto Neri,Jr. took over as editor. Geronimo F. Valenton now edits the paper.

The Mindanao Star
It was much later when the second newspaper was established in Cagayan de Oro City, specifically in 1950 with the publication of Mindanao Star, a tabloid, 8 pages by businessman Bienvenido Cruz as publisher and Alfredo Cruz as first editor.
Actually. The Mindanao Star was published first in 1948 in Cebu City and known then as the Pioneer Press. However, the paper, including its printing facilities had to relocate in Cagayan de Oro City when it came into a conflict with some political big wigs in Cebu City that harassed them.
“It was much safer and productive then, business wise to relocate, rather than stay in Cebu City” Biema Cruz-Along, daughter of the paper’s publisher said.
However, Mindanao Star stopped publication when its publisher died in 1995. “There was nobody in the family interested to continue publishing the paper,” Biema Cruz-Along said.

Other community newsweeklies
Two other newspapers were published after the Mindanao Star. These two, which came out in the 60’s, were the Ang Sidlak with Rodrigo Dondo Lim as publisher-editor and Viewpoint published and edited by Noli Olarte. These two did not survive for long.
Then the Mindanao Post, another news weekly was established in the late 60’s with Rolando C. Piit and Lorenzo de la Cerna as publishers and Manuel V. Quisumbing as its first editor. It is published in English and comes out in 8 to 12 pages.
Perhaps, as a measure to stay financially viable, Mindanao Post went daily in the late 80’s with the entry of local daily newspapers. However, it went back to being news weekly up to the present.
The Mindanao Post is now published by Lorenzo de la Cerna and comes out as a weekly in 8 to 12 pages in English.

Broadcast Media
DXCC—Cagayan de Oro City”s first radio station
Henry Canoy of the prominent Canoy family that includes former Assemblyman and former City Mayor Reuben Canoy formally established DXCC, the first radio station in Cagayan de Oro City on August 28, 1952.
However, the idea for a radio station came even before that in 1948 during several business discussions with a friend Robin Cui who was a proprietor of a radio repair shop in the city. Henry Canoy relate the incidents in his unpublished book RMN The Vision and the Reality:
“…While talking with Robin (Cui) about his problem, a thought flashed through my mind. Why not open a radio station in Cagayan de Oro City.
It was a take- off on an old idea. In the early days, RCA, Erlanger and Galinger, and H.E Heacock and Co. had established their own broadcasting stations to be able to promote and sell more radios.
I argued that…a local station would encourage the residents of Cagayan de Oro City to own radio sets. Robin would then have more radios to service.
To prove that people were ready for such station, I asked Robin to go with me to Ongkoy Padero’s Shop (a local business establishment). There, we set up a “broadcasting “ studio with amplifier, turntable, microphone and loudspeaker…
A few passerby stopped to listen. Soon a small crowd gathered. When they saw that the program was being done live inside the shop, some came in to request or dedicate a tune. Others insisted on singing a Capella “on the air”. The closed circuit “broadcast” was a smashing success.
From that time on I began to think seriously of establishing a radio station in Cagayan de Oro City.”
DXCC started broadcasting even before it could get the necessary permit and franchise to operate not knowing that these were needed. Powered by a homemade 30-watt transmitter, it started broadcasting without call letters and no license.
“…It did not occur to us that what we were doing was illegal and we could be jailed for it,” Henry Canoy recalled.
However, the station eventually was able to comply with all the legal requirements for its operations required by the Radio Control Office, the forerunner of the National Telecommunication Commission.
It got a congressional franchise upon the sponsorship of then Rep. Emmanuel N. Pelaez.
When the station finally went on regular broadcasting, it hired three part time people to its program staff and not one of them had any radio experience.
Vic Bass, an English-Spanish announcer was a high school automotive instructor, Absalon Roxas, Visayan writer and newscaster was a former town mayor, and Bob Avelino, a warehouseman at the Del Monte Cannery.
By and large, however, in 1953 DXCC was a family affair.
Reuben Canoy became the Program Director after graduating from the College of Law at Silliman University and passing the bar exams.
His wife, Solona helped out as traffic clerk, producer and host of a program for home makers (Iwag sa Pamilya) and two other programs.
Reuben also handled the English news and interviews.
The DXCC early programming, just like the other radio stations were heavily influenced by the Americans who brought the broadcast industry back to life after the Second World War. The program includes replays of canned American programs.
However, this changed later when more people managed to own radio sets. Henry Canoy said:
“…with the introduction of the cheap transistor radio, the audience demography underwent a revolutionary transformation. Now that they could afford it, ordinary folks or the so-called bakya crowd looked to radio for information and entertainment.
As set ownership continues to rise at the lower income levels, English programs gradually gave way to soap operas, news interviews, commentaries and disc jockey shows in the vernacular.”
Among the early radio stations, perhaps, DXCC holds the distinction as the only radio station that had a horse- drawn tartanilla for an OB van. Owned and driven by Tirso Daaca, the tartanilla-OB van became a familiar figure at fires, accidents and plaza programs.
By equipping it with a World War II walkie-talkie and a battery-operated amplifier and mounting a loud speaker on roof, the tartanilla-OB van originated broadcast almost anywhere in the town.
Radio programming of DXCC catered to its radio listeners who looked up to their station as a source for information and entertainment.
Viven Magdales, who began his radio career, as a movie barker was DXCC’s own version of Rafael Yabut and Damian Sotto of DZRH. He attacked politicians, businessmen and institutions with impunity.
The program also include Visayan drama serials or “soap operas” which were the translations of the Tagalog version written by Lina Flores, better known as Lina Flor, wife of Francisco “Koko” Trinidad.
Also among DXCC”s early radio personalities was Nestor Torre who were among the talents recruited from Ateneo de Cagayan now Xavier University. Torre today is well known for his work as a film and tv director, writer and movie critic.

DXCC introduces Wirecasting
DXCC also started wirecasting in Cagayan de Oro City, the forerunner of the present-day cable system. This was born out of a public necessity according to Henry Canoy. (The Canoy family now operates the Jade Cable System, one of the two cable tv operators in the city.)
“ Wirecasting was born out of a public necessity. In the early 50’s, the main source of information and entertainment were the newspapers and vernacular magazines from Manila.
Television was in its infancy, and radios still a toddler. The country had a few radio stations, five in Manila and 2 in Cebu,” according to Henry Canoy.
Henry Canoy wrote in his unpublished book:
“with the aim in view of bringing radio to the poorest of the poor, we introduced the wirecast system in Julao-Julao(Now Barangay Consolacion, Cagayan de OroCity). It was a depressed area where prostitution was the chief means of livelihood.
…the cynics shut their mouth when a significant social and moral transformation took place in that benighted barrio.
Today, the good people of Consolacion take great pride in their community as a model of respectability and civic consciousness. I like to think that DXCC and the wirecast system had much to do with the profound change in their values and outlook in life.”

DXCC becomes a network
In the face of growing business competition, Henry Canoy thought that the only we to stay in the business was for him to build a network. So he organized the Radio Mindanao Network and applied for a congressional franchise to operate anywhere in the country.
Radio Mindanao Network got its congressional franchise on June 17,1961. By that time RMN had already four stations. DXCC in Cagayan de Oro City, DXBC in Butuan City, DXIC in Iligan City and DXDC in Davao city.
It was then the only broadcast network based outside Metro Manila.
The RMN tied up with the Soriano group of companies that had acquired ownership of the Inter Island Broadcasting Company (IBC). This paved the way for the establishment of the first television station in Cagayan de Oro City in the 60’s—the IBC TV 13.
Also among the early radio stations established in the 60’s Cagayan de Oro City was the DXMO of the University of Mindanao Broadcasting Network of Atty. Guillermo Torres of Davao City. It was the UMBN that also established the first radio station in Mindanao based in Davao City –DXAW.

First taste of media power
DXCC demonstrated the power of mass media, particularly, radio on its first year of broadcasting on the problem of poor street lighting. Henry Canoy related the incident in his unpublished book as follows:
“ One night a fan wrote to complain about the dark streets of Cagayan de Oro. No sooner had I read the letter than the station was swamped by a barrage of phone calls on the same subject matter.
When I proposed to solve the problem by asking donations to replace the weak incandescent lamps with fluorescent lamps, the response was immediate and tremendous. A young listener kicked off the “Jambalaya Fund Drive” by sending in a peso.
Soon contributions poured in from school children, housewives, and businessmen. Before long, the civic organizations pitched in. the “Jambalaya Fund Drive,” was the first of countless community projects that DXCC would initiate or be involved through the years.”
Cagayan de Oro City had its first taste of the power of mass media to harness the resources of people to confront a problem. It was not to be the last.
Later in the 60’s, DXCC found itself again involved in a movement with other mass media entities, ironically against the city’s electric light company—the Cagayan de Oro Electric Power and Light Company (CEPALCO).
The city’s mass media reflected the sentiments of the residents against move by CEPALCO to raise its electric rates. The discussion led to a proposal to turn off electricity in the residences at a precise time to signify their protest against the proposal.
The protest action convinced the town council and CEPALCO of the vehement objection of the residents and stalled the increase of the electric rates.
Another demonstration of mass media power led to the dismissal of its City Health Officer in 1996 on charges of sexual harassment. The incident was triggered by a complaint of the victim published in the SunStar Cagayan de Oro and picked up by the rest of the local mass media.
A continued discussion of the subject matter prompted the filing of the formal charges by the concerned agencies. The City Health Officer was eventually found guilty and ordered dismissed from office and served a jail term.

The community dailies
SP Daily Tribune—first local daily newspaper
The first regularly published community daily newspaper in Cagayan de Oro City was published by a printing press proprietor—Edilberto S. Bustamante,Jr. this was the Southern Philippines Daily Tribune which first came out in 1982.
The publication of the Southern Philippines Daily Tribune or SP Tribune perhaps, was born out of a business opportunity and a curiosity by its publisher to prove that the city was ready for a local daily newspaper.
At the time, the paper came out, Cebu City and Davao City already had their own local daily newspapers that somehow survived despite the national dailies that also circulate in their places.
So what makes those cities any different from Cagayan de Oro city, Mr. Bustamante thought? He was convinced; the time was ripe for the city to have its own daily newspaper. He was right.
The paper carried results of the Jai Alai games in Manila as an added enticement for local readers. This and the daily dose of local news events that includes photos attracted more than enough readers for the paper not only to survive but also make some profit not realized before by any community newspaper in the city.
A series of events, however, contributed to the demise of the SP Tribune. It stopped publication for a while in 1985. It resumed publication as a weekly in 1987 until 1994 when it reverted to being a daily newspaper under a new set up.

SunStar Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao Gold Star Daily
In 1996, the SunStar publications of Cebu City acquired ownership of the newspaper and renamed it the Cagayan de Oro SunStar and is now among the network of community daily newspapers of SunStar publications.
Mindanao GoldStar Daily is the second community daily newspaper to come out in Cagayan de Oro City. Ernesto Chu, a businessman who owns a printing press among other business interests, publishes it.
The newspaper first came out in 1989 and was known then as the Gold Star Daily with circulation limited to Cagayan de Oro City and nearby areas of Iligan city, Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental.
Circulated initially in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon provinces, Gold Star Daily is now also circulated in other urban centers in Mindanao including Davao City, General Santos City, Zamboanga City, Butuan City and other urban centers in Mindanao. It has been renamed as the Mindanao Gold Star Daily.
SunStar publication also publishes the Super Balita, a daily newspaper published in the local dialect Cebuano. Major stories in the Cagayan de Oro Sun Star are translated into the local dialect and published in Super Balita.
The combined circulation of these three daily newspapers account for some 80 per cent of the local print media in the city. The three local daily newspapers claim to have a daily circulation of 10,000 copies each although there is no way of verifying this claim.
The eight other community newspapers, all weeklies have a circulation ranging from a high of 4,000 copies to 1,000 copies per week. Obviously, this pales in comparison to the combined circulation of the three local daily newspapers.
The three local dailies have their own printing machines, which is a big factor in local community news papering. Except for two, the other local newsweeklies do not have their own printing facilities.
The three local daily newspapers dominate the advertising budget for the print media as well as the circulation. This has prompted many local weeklies to scramble for the crumbs.
Other newsweeklies tried to go daily to stay competitive. The Golden Chronicle and Mindanao Post went daily in the 90’s but lack of resources forced them to revert to being weeklies.
Other weeklies were also forced out of circulation while others became “seasonal newspapers,” coming out only during Christmas season and election period.
Still others changed the format of their publication from newsweeklies to news magazines with an in-depth treatment of events and issues to stay competitive or just to survive.
However, in terms of readership, the three local dailies corner most of them and appear to be more influential in setting the trends of local news events and issues.

Local film industry
The local film industry had a brief fling with movie producing in the 70’s through the Reuben R. Canoy Productions. Before it folded up the local movie outfit produced two films, one in Pilipino and the other in the local dialect.
The first production was Sa Dulo ng Kris starring Joseph Estrada, Vic Vargas and Inez Manopol. The movie as reflected in the title depicts the Mindanao problem.the supporting cast were all residents of the city.
The other movie Sa Imong Lawas ug Dugo was the last Cebuano picture produced in the country before the return of Visayan movie with Panaghoy sa Suba. The screenplay was written and the movie directed by Lorrie de la Cerna.

The Cagayan de Oro Press Club, other media organizations:
The Cagayan de Oro Press Club is born
Among press clubs outside Metro Manila, the Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC), perhaps has the distinction of being the only press club with its own building. The building aside from housing the club’s office also generates income for the club from rentals of office spaces.
The COPC was officially born on August 2,1962 with the registration of its Articles of Incorporation with the Securities and Exchange Commission with the following as founding members—Reuben R. Canoy, Manuel V. Quisumbing, Lorenzo M. de la Cerna, Sarah A. Velez, Noli F. Olarte, Alfredo S. Cruz, Corazon A. Cid, Filomeno O. Apolinario,Jr.,Abelardo U. Clavano, Pureza N. Ramos and Emilio V. Corrales.
The COPC was initially intended for print media journalists as was stated in its purpose:
“THAT, the purpose for which said corporation is formed is to promote cooperation and understanding among newspapermen and newspaperwomen and to draft a code of ethics for the advancement of the newspaper profession.”
However, since then the COPC has expanded to include broadcast media journalists in its ranks.
Six other media organizations exist in the city—Misamis Or.-Cagayan de Oro Association of Publishers, Inc.(MOCAP), Association of Women Journalists, National Union of Journalists of the Philippines(NUJP),Cagayan de Oro Chapter, PNP Press Corps, and the Cagayan de Oro Chapter of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP).
Among the groups, the COPC is the more active. Among its significant activities lately was the conduct of a conference attended by all stakeholders in the media that addressed pressing concerns including media corruption.
The conference held on Feb. 25,2003 was attended by representatives of youth, professional organizations, business groups, academe, government and labor organizations, journalists, publishers and media owners.
The conference funded by the AusAid/PAGF examined the problems of media credibility, competence and corruption.
The AusAid/PAGF also funded a COPC project arising from the conference proceedings—the development of a Code of Ethics of Journalists, a Training Manual on Investigative Reporting against Corruption.

COPC, media corruption and other problems
It is just as well that the COPC has taken a serious look at the problems confronting the Cagayan de Oro City media in the face of accusations from the public against the local media ranging from corruption, irresponsibility, and involvement in partisan political activities.
Two Cagayan de Oro City media men in fact were discovered and admitted to being in the payroll of the Misamis Oriental Provincial Government. The two eventually were censured by the COPC and their respective media entities.
The problem of media corruption in the city is not something new if media history is to be taken into account. Henry Canoy said in his unpublished book:
“What is now decried as “envelopmental journalism” had its start in 1949 when press agents bought reporters, editors, columnists and commentators to attack Quirino. As though on cue, the newspapers, radio and TV took turns assailing him for allegedly purchasing a P5,000 bed and a gold-plated chamber pot.”
This type of media corruption has taken new forms such as ATM, ACDC.
ATM refers to the bribery wherein the money is desposited in the ATM Account of the media men concerned while ACDC means “Attack Collect Defend Collect,” a practice of either criticizing or praising or defending a certain personality for a fee.
This form of media corruption becomes prevalent particularly during the election period when many candidates vie for the services of corrupt media men to promote their candidacies or destroy their opponents.
Accusations have also been made against some mediamen, mostly in the broadcast industry of being biased in their reportage or of being promoting the interests of some city officials.
It was in response to this concerns that the Cagayan de Oro Press Club conducted a conference attended by representatives from all sectors of society to examine the problems confronting mass media in the city.
A spin off of the conference is the formation of a new civil society organization Sangga Kagayanon that has set up an Independent Media Watch Committee with the full endorsement of the COPC.
This new civil society organization includes representatives from the academe, senior members of the local mass media, professional, business and youth groups. This body hopes to monitor, report and take action on reports of corruption and other problems in the local mass media.
The COPC has also formed the Journalists Against Corruption Network (JACNet) that includes grants for investigative journalism.
Officers of the Cagayan de Oro Press Club, however, were the first to admit that the problem of media corruption is something that will not easily die out.
“It is something that is deeply rooted and dependent also on other factors such as low remuneration of the media people particularly those in the provinces,” a COPC official admitted.
During a series of media forum initiated by COPC, it was also realized that the lack of formal training by many local media people was contributing to the irresponsible exercise of press freedom, if not abuse by many mediamen.
In many instances, newspaper columnists and broadcast commentators due to their lack of knowledge act as if they are the prosecutor, judge rolled into one in declaring suspects in criminal acts or suspected grafters as guilty even before a formal charge has been filed.
The COPC and the academe led by the Department of Development Communication of Xavier University is working on a training manual that will incorporate subject matters in the communication schools curriculum that will address the concerns of the local media. These were among the matters discussed during the public proceedings on mass media.

But let's not be too radical here. let's forget it from now on. Let's pursue not only CDO's progress, but whole Mindanao as well. boju June 16th, 2007, 07:27 AM Ayala Land launch Alegria Hills
More investors eye economic potential of CdeO
Ayala Land Inc.(ALI), the premier real estate developer in the country unveiled last week Alegria Hills, its first development in Mindanao through twin ceremonies.
The ceremonial groundbreaking was held in the morning last Saturday, June 9, 2007 at the project site, Phase 1 of Alegria Hills located in Barangay Indahag. The official launch followed at 6 in the evening at the Atrium of Limketkai Center.
“Finally, the long wait is over and we are all excited to present this high-end residential project to Cagayanons,” says Head for Vismin Marketing and Sales, Tetta Baad, adding that, “Ayala Land will finally revealed the distinct and unique features of this particular project in a unique launching at Limketkai Atrium.”
Alegria, a Spanish word for joy and merriment, connotes a happy place where a family finds fulfillment in a community with shared dreams and values. And that is what Ayala Land is offering to Cagayanons.
“We want you to build your dream homes at the heart of everything,” said Baad.
Perched atop gently sloping highlands of Cagayan de Oro, yet merely a 10-minute drive from LimketKai Center, Alegria Hills offers a panoramic view of the city and the Macajalar Bay.
Carrying the Ayala Land Premier brand, Alegria Hills will be master-planned in the tradition that Ayala Land Inc. is known for.
Project partners, invited guests, civic groups, government officials, national and local press attended the exclusive groundbreaking and launch.
City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano welcomed the entry of Ayala Land, Inc. to Cagayan de Oro as a magnet that will attract more investors to relocate or place their investments here.
Mayor Emano said that the entry of Ayala in Cagayan de Oro is an acknowledgement of the economic viability of the city for real estates and other giant investments.
“I am sure that these investors do not just put their investments here without conducting a thorough feasibility study that will ensure a successful return of their investment,” Mayor Emano pointed out.
Representatives from the Ayala Land, Inc. disclosed that the company will initially develop 53 hectares of the 350-hectare property.
As of now, Alegria Hills has 95 lots that are up for sale. These lots comprise the first phase of the initial development spanning an area of eight hectares.
At the Alegria Hills, the Ayala Land will develop several facilities such as a pocket park, sports facility, watershed treatment facility, chapel, ravine orchards, promontory point, canyon trails and a central park.
In another development, City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano said that more foreign investors are eyeing the vast potential for investment success in Cagayan de Oro. The mayor was scheduled to meet one foreign investor and two giant investors from Manila last weekend.
The visiting investors were expected to discuss with Mayor Emano their plan to put up a multi-million investment in the city.
Mayor Emano said that one of the investors is also a business partner of the Ayala group of companies. He pointed out that the entry of Ayala in Cagayan de Oro is a positive indication of the economic viability of the city and serves as a magnet that will attract more investors here.
Already, Korea-based Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Companies Limited has expressed intention to put up a training school in the city where over 10,000 employees will be trained and hired for its US$1.2 Billion ship-building investment that will be established at the Phividec Industrial Estates in nearby Misamis Oriental province.
The entry of Hanjin Heavy Industries is a fruit of the trade mission the mayor led with the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industries Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber) in previous years.
The Hanjin group of companies is principally involved in the building of steel ships. (with a report from CIO)

My friend, my ancestors were lumads of this city, but i'm multi-ethnic now. Just accept the fact that CDO is a multi-ethnic and multi-racial city, and a model of symbiotic relationship between Christians and Muslims.
Well, just open your eyes wider, and you'll see it by yourself that out of CDO's multi-ethnicity,multi-racial, multi-cultural, and multi-religiosity, we live in great harmony for one goal---CDO's progress--a progress, which means not only concrete progress (infrastructures), but abstract progress as well (brotherly love) for all human beings. So as soon as you can, please leave behind your own ideology. It will just hamper not only you, but us.

The mercedez benz showroom remained rusty. The Magnolia plant is now Philippine Water Resources, Inc.-the maker of Nature's Spring Drinking Water. The eastern part of the city particularly Barangay Tablon is the industrial center of CDO. Some light industrial can also be found along the highway from Brgy. Lapasan to Brgy. Cugman.

Yup. Leo's Bar is within KIMWA Compound and named after Leo Lua, the manager. Drag racing is still on but not regular. They hang-out too at Starmart and also at Priderock Business Park at Victoria's Grill. They use the new JR Borja Extension for racing na because it's quieter and less traffic especially at night. Villa Ernesto was once an exclusive community but the presence of squatters in adjacent properties prompt original residents to sell their house and move elsewhere (either abroad or in new estates). Alwana Subd. was originally populated by foreign expats working in industrial firm in CDO and in nearby areas, mostly Japanese, Europeans, Americans, Koreans, etc... but some rich locals and even Manila-based Pinoys have bought units there.

But yeah, several months after the 2004 polls, PGMA went to CDO to confess to CDO's archbishop about the prioritization of projects in areas where she won.Though, she denied that Laguindingan Airport's delay is because of her lost in the region.. Hey! What else could have caused it?! Northern Mindanao, being the Industrial Hub in the south is among the top income rich regions in PI. Fool us not Gloria!
I love Gloria though...:D
I don't really love GMA but compared to some of her power hungry critics I'd rather stick with her at the moment at least she has a concrete roadmap of what she wants for the country.

flymordecai July 6th, 2007, 08:56 AM What's the latest on the Laguindingan Airport? I wonder what's holding them back? It's frustrating reading posts from a year ago saying that construction will start in a few months, yet a year a later nothing has been accomplished.

lochinvar July 8th, 2007, 07:36 PM I'm wondering too. Panahon pa ni Erap ay naririnig ko na ang Languindingan project. Is it financing problem or ROW problem? I thought ROK is going to fund this. I could see in the aerial picture there are no structures in the area to hold off any construction.

ladp_infodesk July 11th, 2007, 10:16 AM Hi everyone, it's me here to update you for the current status of the Laguindingan Airport Development Project (LADP), reporting here from LADP Info Desk.
Well, as of end of 11 July 2007, the following are the updates for LADP per component:
Component 1 - Laguindingan Resettlement Project Phase 2
This component of the Project was started last 22 April 2007 and ongoing implemented by the National Housing Authority (NHA) through a MOA signed last June 2007 between DOTC, NHA, LGU-Laguindingan, Provincial Gov't of Misamis Oriental. Ongoing Earthworks, Off-site Waterworks, Subdivision Survey Works, and Electrical Works are undertaken by the Contractor. The site development of the Phase 2 Resettlement Site (425 Lots) with Contract Cost of P38.79 Million, is expected to be completed by 18 October 2007 (after six months duration).
Component 2 - Construction of Airport Access Road
This component of the Project is slated to be started by 12 July 2007, after the Notice to Proceed (NTP) was already issued to the winning contractor last 02 July 2007. The 4.3 km (4 lanes) Access Road which will connect the existing National Highway to the Airport Site will cost about P188 Million with a contract duration of 300 calendar days. The 24 Hectares Road-Right-of-Way was already completed by the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental.
Component 3 - Main Airport Civil Works
This component of the Project is ongoing under the procurement process by DOTC BAC. Last 18 May 2007, four (4) interested korean contractors had submitted their prescribed pre-qualification documents for evaluation by DOTC and subsequent approval by lending bank (KEXIM Bank). The pre-qualification evaluation report will soon be released by DOTC with concurrence by the lending bank by mid of July 2007. The issuance of bid documents for the pre-qualified korean contractors will be made by mid-august 2007. Thereafter, proper bidding will start with the target date of selecting a korean contractor by end of November 2007. By December 2007, the Main Airport Civil Works will commence with the issuance of DOTC of the Notice to Proceed (NTP) to the winning korean contractor at that time.
Well, this are just few of the many updates to come in the following months for the Laguindingan Airport Development Project.

Yes, the Visayas cluster in Mactan, Iloilo & Bacolod will work with the Minda cluster CDO-Iligan & Davao. Together these tandem of Southern Airports will be key in the accessibility of goods/services in Vis/Min.

GearX July 18th, 2007, 07:04 AM EXCLUSIVE
Shipbuilder Hanjin plans to expand in Mindanao
ONE of the world’s largest shipbuilders, the country’s topmost ecozones administrator, told a Manila Times roundtable on Tuesday, is poised to carry out a major expansion here to cash in on increased global demand for ships, and is ready to plunk in a significant investment to foot the project.
Philippine Economic Zones Authority (PEZA) Director General Lilia B. de Lima told editors and reporters of The Manila Times that her agency is in advanced discussions with shipbuilding giant Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp. of Korea for a 300 hectare lot to contain the company’s proposed new facilities, with Misamis Oriental emerging as the front runner among possible sites.
“Hanjin is looking to expand, and the Philippine Veterans Investment Development Corp. (PHIVIDEC) site in Misamis Oriental is a big possibility [for the expansion],” she said. She declined to provide further details, as details of the project are still being negotiated.
The move comes on the heels of the company’s recent $1-billion investment in the Subic Bay Freeport to fund a 349-hectare shipbuilding facility. Hanjin is scheduled to deliver 33 medium-sized container vessels worth almost $3 billion in the next two years and build 82 large-sized ones from 2009 to 2011 from its Philippine operations.
“There is another company that is interested in the PHIVIDEC site, but right now Hanjin is very aggressive [in securing the site for their expansion],” de Lima said.
Hanjin employs 3000 people, and is expected to open up more than 13,000 direct jobs by next year and 15,800 by 2011 once its expansion plans are put in place.
Foreign investors continue to flock to the Philippines, as investments registered with the PEZA as of June 2007 hit P69.082 billion, or 201 percent higher than the P22.90 billion the incentive-giving body recorded during the same period last year, de Lima said.
Locators posted a 20.7-percent increase in shipments to $12.86 billion in the first four months of the year from P10.658 billion in the same period last year. PEZA employment also increased by 10.45 percent to 559,302 workers as of April this year from 506,391 in the same period last year.
The good investment climate and the country’s willingness to provide incentives to deserving companies is one of the main reasons why the Philippines is reaping increased inflows, de Lima said.
“Our job is to promote the Philippines as an excellent investment destination, and so far I think we are doing a very good job as investors are still coming in. The success of our economic zones is a testament to foreign investor’s confidence in the government and in PEZA,” she said.
De Lima expressed confidence that total investments in the country’s ecozones will breach the P100 billion mark by the end of the year, as existing locators and foreign-based electronics and semiconductor suppliers pour more money into their local operations.
“We are confident that total investments in PEZA administered zones will reach P100 billion because of strong investor interest in the country,” she said.
Goods shipped from PEZA administered zones accounted for 85 percent of the country’s total exports last year. Most of Manila’s dollar earning electronics and semicondutor products are manufactured from factories located there.
US-based Texas Instruments (TI), the world’s biggest producer of chips for mobile telephones, recently agreed to infuse $1 billion for a new assembly and test site earlier this year. De Lima said TI specifically asked to be administered by PEZA, leading to a special order from President Arroyo to carve out a 77,000-square-meter area at the Clark Economic Zone, a former US air base north of Manila.
According to de Lima, investor confidence is paramount to attracting more investments to the country, adding that her agency has a no-corruption policy, and is also geared to provide solutions to locators 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
She gave instances of how her selling missions have never failed to bring in investors because she took along “satisfied investors” from those countries to speak about their experience in the Philippines.
“We are a full service agency, and we are on call 24/7. We try to solve the locator’s problems. Whether it is for a simple matter or for complicated issues related to their operations, we lend a helping hand,” she said.

boju July 19th, 2007, 09:59 AM VM Emano optimistic Laguindingan int’l airport project will take off
by Lorebeth C. Requiroso/City Council Office
Thanks Ayala for donating lot
VICE Mayor Vicente Emano is very optimistic that the long-stalled implementation of the multi-billion Laguindingan International Airport Project will finally take off. This, even as he expressed his gratitude to the Ayala Land Corporation for donating 80 hectares of land which will form part of the proposed airport site. It may be recalled that during his incumbency as the city mayor, Vice Mayor Emano had pushed and facilitated the implementation of the project in order to goad investment activities in the province and in Mindanao as a whole. In line with this, the vice mayor headed a trade mission to South Korea and negotiated with the Export and Import Bank (Eximbank) of South Korea for the needed $108 million funding requirements to make the project a reality. The vice mayor said he has always been working hard and will continue to work for the development of the island. However, he said the vision will have to be supported by the people themselves. "Kanunay kita nanglimbasog nga maangkon sa Mindanao ang tingusbawan nga angay maangkon sa katawhan dinhi apan wala kini nakasandig sa usa lamang ka tawo kundi angayan tambayayongan sa tanan," he added. No less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo launched the project in Barangay Moog, Laguindingan town, Misamis Oriental early last year. (LCR)
