View Full Version : Discuss: Best HISTORIC Skyline in Europe

Brad
October 29th, 2007, 09:56 PM
Many European cities don't have big modern skylines, but they have very impressive old castles, churches etc. So these cities could participate in the 'best historic skyline in Europe' poll.
Since only 15 cities can participate in the poll, let's discuss the candidates.(I wanted to start the poll, but it seems to me that it's better to discuss first.)

Please, show us the historic SKYLINES of your cities.
Only the buildings OLDER than 50 years will be taken into consideration.

I nominate my beloved city of Riga, Latvia. Two pics. Brad... you had to limit the number of pics, some will post 15 and more...

Yes, because they used to be there between 17xx and 1945.Europe suffered much during WW2, so I think reconstruction of old buildings is OK.

May be I couldn't express myself well..
It's better to see one big historic skyline than several pics of individual building. For instance, Moscow university is very interesting skyscraper, but Moscow's historic skyline (in this particular shot) doesn't comprise it. May be there is a shot with University and the Novodevichy convent together?

That's the most recognizeable skyline in Kyiv, this street is actually 1000 years old, the legend has it that this is where the first millennium new year celebrations took place in Ukraine. The architecture is of different periods. This is right below here

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s164/daniel_staclara/Porto/DSC04809.jpg
now, this is an historic skyline, even the iron bridge is historic.

Porto is not a TOP 10, but a TOP 5 historic skyline. one of the scrappers is 300 yrs old. The wall is about 700 yrs old or more. The bridge is more than 100 yrs old. The city is inhabited from time immemorial but most the neighbourhood was fairly developed 1000 yrs ago. Stones here have real history. It's a world heritage city and it survived to our days, unlike Lisbon, because it was not destroyed by any significant war since the Arabic invasion since the 9th century except for sporadic Viking raids and the napoleons invasions that left no significant problems, and any natural event, area not prone to Earthquakes.

Maybe many other Historical Skylines of Europe look better than Istanbul or look more developed, detailed... but do not ignore, Istanbul's skyline is centuries older than others.

Anyway, all those Historical skylines look so cultured and beautiful.

It´s surely very hard to choose the best skyline in Europe, because Europe is full of fantastic historical skyline anywhere you go.
So I wouldn´t do it, but I must say: that cities like Carcassone, Segovia, Oxford, York, Firenze, Brugges etc. have a lot of more better skyline than majority of the cities here. At least for what I have seen...

I will pick perhaps not the best skyline, but my beloved city..

imo, it will take time 'til we can see a building playing its role in a skyline in the same majestic way as the Eiffel Tower does in Paris. It's interesting that so many people seem to rate skylines for the "cluster", "amount" and "stylized silhouette" factors. Nothing wrong with that, just don't agree at all. In that sense, I'm pretty sure that certain cities with few or just one notable building, or simply an interesting shape due to relief shapes, which are got nonetheless an interesting scenery deserve to be named here too. Some examples already posted could be Oporto, Florence, and we could say the same for generally most of western and southern European historic towns, such as these ones from northern Italy:

-Novara

http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/4192621.jpg

^^ Nothing special about this, those just mean to be random examples of a very specific region, could have posted the roofs of Carcasonne or a lonely and massive tower of an English cathedral for the same. The point of this is pretty obvious, skylines aren't only consisted of a gathering of buildings but also their arrangement in the landscape, the shapes of the latter, and even its symbolism.

One of my favourites has to be Edinburgh, for sure:

Toledo has a splendid skyline IMO. The Alcazar emerging from the roofs catches all the attention... wonderful.
Novara is plain ugly. :D
While Turin has a wonderful skyline too, due to the Mole and the Alps. A very underrated city.
This is the most iconic view over the city, from Cappuccini hill.

I have the feeling that your approach above is too broad. Sure, you can post the towns with "nice scenery" but still it will not make them to have a good historic skyline, if they do not have some/several tall structures
from Wikipedia:
A skyline is best described as the overall or partial view of a silhouette of a city's tall buildings and structures consisting of many skyscrapers in front of the sky in the background. It can also be described as the artificial horizon that a city's overall structure creates. Skylines serve as a kind of fingerprint of a city, as no two skylines are alike. Skylines that are stretched out to a large (sometimes panoramic) view because of large cities or twin cities are called cityscapes. In many metropolises, skyscrapers play a significant role in defining the skyline.
... so, nice hills in the bacground will not make any city to have a nice skyline, if they do not have any.

I have never been to Rome/ Please show us what you mean.
We are not talking about the remains of iconic buildings but about historic skylines.

You'll rather go to Rome first than I find time and desire to learn
how to post photos in this forum:ohno:

I'm talking about quality here. Skyline is made up out of buildings
which are placed in natural setting. It matters who and when had built
them, what are construction materials and how they fit into the skyline.
Now, collect some money, fly to Rome, climb one of its hills and look
around. If you don't realize what I mean, what else can be done?
I've pretty much seen most of major European historical towns and have no doubts
about Rome's superiority.
But you choose what you like and be happy:cheers:

You need luck, to see Tatra mountains from Krakow. Weather must be perfect. It's about 100 km ;)

Were these church towers rebuilt and when? Cause I guess not much of this city survived those two nights in february '45. Prety nice job with Dresden though; city and this skyline look quite awesome.

OK, this is not the "flood the thread with pics of your fav. city" thread. Seriously, I'd appreciate it if we saw pics of actual skylines and not tourist shots.

I mean come on, why is this shot (http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/609/img8412resize.jpg) in a thread about historic skylines?
