View Full Version : Lack of moderation in highways & autobahns

Early this year, a new subforum in "infrastructure & mobility" opened, it's called highways & autobahns. There is some problems with moderation, because there is a total lack of it. Some threads completely derail because of trolling, offtopic skybar-ish talk, well, everything that has to be moderated isn't moderated by the current mods of infrastructure & mobility. User Verso, and i already PM-ed Jan about this, but no response so far, so i try it here.

Maybe the mods of infrastructure & mobility aren't interested in the subforum, that's no problem, but it would be nice to appoint one or two users as a mod for this subforum.

Some mods post there, but they are from different subforums, and have no moderating-rights here.

Every thread is spoiled with a subject called "the Struma motorway", a 25km long road as average as it can get, but some people have to mention it everywhere. Another thread was finally closed by a mod, but it took 6 pages or 102 posts to get this far.

Thanks.

^ I confirm. Beside that, one of the moderators - asohn (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/member.php?u=12319) - hasn't been online for 7 months, and the last time (s)he made a post was 1 year ago.

As long as we don't offend other forum members, lack of mods in not persistent.
We are from different countries, and until now there are no holy wars or quarrels like, for exmple, between football fans.
But sometimes someone with power to change or delete stoopid or offensive post, move post to right thread or send private message with threat of brig or ban, would be necessary.

Just PM me next time there's a problemBy saying "problem", what exactly do you mean by that? There's just too much off-topic, trolling, rude posts to report them every time these individual "problems" occur. For me, this whole lack of moderation is a big problem.

BTW. in polish subforum "Roads Infrastructure" we've created 'supervisory board'. A few people suggest to a mod the best solutions (names, etc.).

It takes cooperation from everyone to keep that forum running smoothly, if you see something that needs attention let moderation know.

SSC is huge and it's hard to keep an eye out for everything, we love when forumers assist us in cleaning up, generally those are the forumers that are chosen as moderators when it is neccesary. :)

i don't understand few things: current mods are not writing at some sections at all, and they are against new mods. there are some people (including me) who spend few hours per day only at motorways section. and then comes somebody and say that Radi is innocent and we are bloody bastards when we spam (it's even not spam, it's chatting) at single thread. and Radi could be glorified and saint at the end because we're sick of quoting his insults and rude words. and all that just because those "mods" don't know what is actually going on there. what a competetive moderators!

You think I'm going to let someone threaten to spam the forums and personally attack forumers ;)Well, it took you half a year of his spamming and attacking forumers to brig him. And I wasn't freaking out. I can still easily say you pay close to zero attention to a subforum you're a moderator in. Does it make you feel proud? I know for myself I wouldn't wanna be a mod anywhere else but in Highways & Autobahns, not even in the whole Infrastructure & Mobility subforum. And what's with asohn (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/member.php?u=12319)? Is he declared saint? He hasn't been online for 7 months, someone could easily replace him.

Chris & Verso for mods!!!!

We are congratulating, because rules of politeness demand to do that.

Now i see three things, that can cause problems:
1. reading his posts i see he is not interested in motorways;
2. even he says he is not a regular guest at this subforum, he declared to visit us at least once a week (!!!), but in other forums he also posts not to often, so we may think, his activity is not to big;
3. as i suspect, he is not european (that is not a charge or objection, just observation); most of us, with biggest activity are from Europe, so he may not understand complexity of relations (for example Poland-Germany, UK-France, former Yugoslavia) and he may not feel, that some opinions are very offensive.

But my attitude is, give Fusionist some time to show us, that he deserves to be our mod. If he doesn't - we will ask Jan or other admins to change him.

No offense to Fusionist, but making someone a mod of a subforum he never posted in, doesn't makes us think this problem is taken seriously.

Maybe it's time for Fusionist to tell something about himself, and explain how he is thinking to moderate the subforum by visiting once a week, when there are over a thousand unread posts each time he checks.

Ok, we will, but can someone (Rainier, Fusionist or someone else) stick this thread then? And change its name

And merge that http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=544190 ?

Starting that thread in Highways & Autobahnen subforum, my intention was, that we have separate subforum, our own moderator and we should have separate thread to communicate with him.

If you need to speak with moderation PM them when you have something that needs attention.

If a seperate sub-forum needs to be created the administation and moderation team will make that decision.

I am pleasantly surprised that so many of you care about that sub-forum -- almost like a family :) -- and that is a great sign of success for SSC -- I will make sure that your sub section is taken care of in the best way possible and with the appropriate moderation team to support you.

Thanks

Sending PM to moderator has one big disadvantage.
None, except mod, can get to know, what's on others mind - which opinions, conclusions and sentences are not welcome. Some sentences, that i think are neutral, people from other countries may find offensive.
Posting problems on public forum, we can debate about them.

In polish subforum we have two threads: Book of complaints and Book of brigs and bans. So we can guess, why some decisions are made.

Maybe it is not the best example, but i don't know (and many family members :) either), why Radi6404 is in the brig - which post tipped the balance, and when his brig will end.

Of course i know, there's no democracy on SSC... :(

You mean the whole infrastrcuture forum with bridges and tunnels and airports and ships/harbours? And to continue: every skybar including its subparts for military issues, sports, news or whatever? the travel forum with nature photos and similar threads in the general photography section? Low rise architecture and sport arenas?

^^ The way i see it, this forum is not only about skyscrapers, but urbanity in general. Motorways/freeways are a part of urbanity.

Yeah, it's like making you a moderator in the Bolivian subforums...

No offense to Fusionist, but making someone a mod of a subforum he never posted in, doesn't makes us think this problem is taken seriously.

Maybe it's time for Fusionist to tell something about himself, and explain how he is thinking to moderate the subforum by visiting once a week, when there are over a thousand unread posts each time he checks.Oh, given my supreme general knowledge and overall analytic skills, I could be that moderator. I don't really want to rub it in but your poor command of the English language would be one reason why you shouldn't be the moderator.

Great idea. This is the best solution. We won't make problems anymore, ask for mod and for anything else.

But is it really what we need?

Seems fair, but what will happen to Fusionist then? Maybe we can assign him some other section.

Is this forum just for mods? If they loose a will to work on it, forum will be closed?

I hope your opinions were just gloomy jokes.

Why don't we simply close that whole section.
After all, this is a skyscraper forum

Yeah, great idea! Just because it doesn't interest you doesn't mean it's not popular, you selfish fool. There are a lot of active users, though maybe not as much as in other subforums, but still a lot. There's a need for (more) moderation, not for a war. :ohno:

Why don't current moderators simply read the Highway&Autobahn section for just one or two weeks actively, let's say, at least an hour a day? I don't think there's a need to vote; after all we're 'just' users. But the current moderation obviously doesn't have a clear view on what's happening in this section. If they would have that, they could easily see who would be suitable for being a moderator and who not. After that the 'old' moderators can ignore (again) this section, since they don't seem to like it.

Not insulting Fusionist, but someone who's never been in this section, only superficially something knows about European highways, and only planning to visit it once a week, I don't think that's realistic. There's a need for at least one european moderator, since most of the topics are about European highways. And I think a bit knowledge about highways would be nice too, I guess... I have preferences for some people, but it's not my, nor other users, choise. Let the current moderation observate the current things in the H&A section, and let them come out with one or more realistic moderators. (I personally think that just one wouldn't be enough...)

One more day has gone by, and I knew I had to respond. So here I am. Yours truly. Fusionist, or as some know me.. Fusi. They asked me..what do I know about highways ? am I a 'specialist' ? what car do I drive ? what is my favourite motorway ? so on and on.. the criticisms mounted. The gleam of the computer scream ( which is often beckoning ) suddenly wanst so appealing. To respond, or not to, the debate that I had for the past 24 hours.

The yesterday night misery. the question.. what car do you drive Fusionist ?? Pangs of guilt. Reality bites. Shame. Frustration, how can I tell them ?? ( thats when the little voice popped up..'fusi, fusi' it hissed in my ears.. don't tell them. Pretend.. it said..PRETEND !! pretend as if you know..but then I stirred in bed...past the lampshades in the dimmed up cozy room the computer screen glowed. I had forgotten to off the computer ! The condmning words wehre right there in front of me.. glwoing in the dark 'what car do you drive Fusionist ?' it asked. 'What do you know about the Struma highway " it challenged ?? I stirred in bed. OMG it was 2 30 am !!

The early morning blues..alarm rings. I get up and on my way to work to catch the train. The mobile phone rings. Its my friend. THe text message screams..'i am on my way north. hitting the M1 evening. take care xx ( name withheld for privacy reasons )..I was relieved. Glad she remembered me. Then it stuck... did she say.. M1 ?????? the motorway ?? the little voice in my head again 'what is the worst highway you have driven?'..'what is your favourite highway ?'...I oop into the closest corner shop and ask for Paracetamol. My head is pounding.... thankfully I manage to board the train...

Not so good noon... at work. 12 30 pm. Lunch. I look out of the window. Lovely view of the London skyline. I sit back and relax. Then the little voice.. skyline... skyscrapers... SSC..OMG !! then the little voice... 'fusi you forgot something ?" it laughed at me. "you have questios to answer Fusi. There are people out there waiting... real people. People who love highways, they need you.. log in". I look left and right.. do I take a risk and log in from work ??? do I not ??... the little voice screams in my ears..."how many days in a week can you spend for our highway and autobahns fusi ? how many days in a week ??

...then a little girls appears in my vision...a sweet little girl of 10 with blond hair and blue eyes in a red dress. She is in the middle of a highway.. with cars screaming past her.. she raises both her hands and pleads to me 'Fusi please please help me.. I need you" I gag myself from screaming... god please show me mercy !

Evening and everything ok ? NOT. THe return journey home.. in a train. Not a car. THe train chugs along the tracks overtaking the tiny little cars in thier tiny little roads stuck in a traffic jam. Pangs of guilt. 'what is the worst highway you have driven Fusi?' the question... I cry. How can I tell them...

7 30 pm. I have alrteady taken 4 paracetamol for the day. Opening my room....the computer screen gleams, welcoming me as if t osay' ahh.. there you are Fusi.. I caught you now'. And it was right. I knew I had to do it. Then the little voice returns 'unplug the power fusi' it offers... then a booming voice from the back of my head.."Mr. Fusionist arent you a Mod.. dont you have a responsibility.? Be an adult and tell them.. tell them you resign". I am almost in tears by now...

8 40 pm. Resign did it say ? I was so angry.. why should i ? just cos I didnt know the Struma highway ?? na. I am sure I am a good Mod. and can do the sub-forum a great favour by managing it well. I inch towards teh computter screen to type... then the phone rings.. so I walk away..

8 55pm. I decided to bite the bullet and get away saving my skin. I pray to God and try log in determined to ask the Admins to releive me and asign a Mod who is more familiar with the sub-forum.. but strangely the interent connection is off..

9 45 pm. The connection is back. I decide against it. Why should I ? I am a moderat voice and how can they dump me without trying me ? After all I need a fair call. After all how do I know a replacement Mod would do the job better ? Also as a new Mod I am unbiased. Let me just finish the dinner and tell them who is boss.

10 10pm. I log in but have few emails to check.. double minded..let SSC wait..

Only meaning of this, is to get to know something about other users. it's voluntary, don't answer, if You, don't want to.

It's not about posting links. I know i can do that, but i'm accustomed to mods making order in thread. Sometimes if conversation goes offtopic, we ask mods to move posts to other thread. Pasting links makes bigger mess, than it's worth. Some of us read all new messages on H&A subforum, and we can jump from thread to thread. But moving posts will make threads more clear for "guest" users.
