A news reportage about the new supertall was broadcasted on October 31 on a national news channel(in Russian):

aBmVRDO_02c

President opens “Abu-Dhabi Plaza” complex presentation. A skyscraper which is expected to be the highest building in Kazakhstan will be built in Astana with an official presentation of the project having taken place with the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, attending the ceremony. Astana is to apply new architectural and construction standards with Arabian investors along with the English architect, Norman Foster to help the city. One of the British architect’s projects, the Palace of Peace and Accord, has already been implemented in Astana. This time, the famous Englishman has developed a project of skyscrapers with the highest one being over 380 metres tall.

Ahmed Al Sayegh, chairman, “ALDAR” Construction Company:
- Today, Kazakhstan is attracting large investments from all over the world. Realising the special significance of Astana for your Republic, we have taken the decision to participate in its construction. We hope that this project will strengthen the fraternal relations between Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates.

The first intention of the Arab investors to build the “Abu-Dhabi Plaza” was announced last year when Nursultan Nazarbayev was on a business trip to the United Arab Emirates. The construction is scheduled to begin next spring and finish by 2011. The multi-storey complex will consist of 450 flats, 250 and 150-place hotels, and a 5 thousand place car parking facility together with offices and trade sites, the total area of which will be at least 80 thousand square metres. Additionally, it is also planned to lay a railway lane linking the skyscraper and the city airport with high-speed electric local trains.

New Foster Tower in Kazakhstan

Published on 2007-11-01 by Skyscrapernews.com

Alder Property has unveiled their latest project due to grace the skyline of Astana in Kazakhstan, a former Soviet republic located in the heart of central Asia.

Designed by internationally renowned architects Foster and Partners the development named Abu Dhabi Plaza after its sister project the Central Market Redevelopment located strangely enough in Abu Dhabi.

The mixed use complex is a matrix of staggered buildings. At the base of the complex a leisure and retail podium along with a hotel cluster rise up to form a series of residential and office towers, creating a striking landmark for the Astana skyline. This project got a new name:
Central Markets

From the Foster+Partner website:

"Central Markets is a staggered matrix of buildings with a retail and leisure podium and a hotel cluster at the base that rises to form a series of office and residential towers to the north - creating a new landmark on Astana’s skyline. The retail podium contains elements which are a reinvention of a traditional marketplace and also incorporate a light rail station and public square. Situated along Astana’s ‘green axis’, Central Markets incorporates a series of temperate year-round winter gardens. And allows light to be channelled deep into the mass of the buildings, creating a network of sheltered pedestrian routes through the site. A highly efficient compact scheme, the organisation of the building into a matrix of blocks is an effective means of maximising the potential for thermal insulation during the colder winter months, when temperatures can reach as low as -40 degrees Celsius. The cluster formation - where the taller blocks of varying heights rise out of the matrix - has been carefully designed to provide the appropriate views for the different building types. The more exclusive penthouses and the higher residential towers have dramatic views over the city, while the lower rise offices and hotel are more inward facing to reinforce the sense of place. Sections of the retail mall will draw on the historic legacy of Kazakhstan’s traditional Bazaars by recreating a bustling marketplace ambience. Light shafts between the blocks are infused with colour by the use of laminated glass panels that flood the spaces below with a dynamic play of light, shadow and patterns. The design concept has been driven by the extreme local climate and a rigorous process of climate analysis revealed a solution that would maximise solar gain in the colder months with an innovative thermal hot water collecting system for the south façade are being considered. The north façade is heavily insulated to harness heat, and appears like a solid grid interspersed with random glazing. The effect is a distinctive, textured membrane that animates this cooler elevation."

Foster design to warm up winter for Kazakhs

Robert Booth
Saturday November 3, 2007
The Guardian

After the Golden Egg and the giant yurt, the latest addition to the architectural playground that is Astana, capital of Kazakhstan, is a mini-city designed to look like a three dimensional bar chart.

Norman Foster has designed the complex to include an 88-storey office tower, a "traditional" Kazakh market and a winter garden the size of a football pitch to offer locals the chance to enjoy temperatures of around 10C (50F) while it is -30C outside.

The project is part of the plan by Nursultan Nazarbayev, the authoritarian president of Kazakhstan, to spend oil and gas revenues on a new capital.

Following a masterplan drawn up in a day by Kisho Kurokawa, Mr Nazarbayev has built two intersecting boulevards, each a mile long and 180 metres wide. At their junction is the national archive, shaped like a golden egg. The transport ministry is shaped like a cigarette lighter and this year Foster and Partners completed a vast tent containing tropical gardens, beaches and a nine-hole golf course.

Foster's latest addition will be called Abu Dhabi Plaza after Mr Nazarbayev gifted the site to Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed, president of the United Arab Emirates. It will be built by a corporation partly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi.

Gerard Evenden, senior partner at Foster and Partners, said the design was intended to keep out the cold and maximise heat from the sun and was "a pure expression of environmentally sensitive design ... the towers are clustered together to conserve energy like penguins huddling in the winter," he said. "The tallest are at the north and turn their backs to where the cold winds blow from the steppes."

Solar panels facing south will collect energy to heat water.

Here are a set of images and a description of Abu Dhabi Central Market( in UAE), a project that reinterprets the traditional Arab souk and draws on the vernacular architecture of the region. I think it is very similar to 'Astana Markets' in a way, and especially in how it takes into consideration the nature of that particular culture where it is going up right now. I think Foster's project makes a good point that even though the world is globalizing at a very fast rate, it is still very important to practice an environmentally-friendly design and a culture-conscious architecture to help preserve intergrity of local way of life. In addition, for people of Astana and Kazakhstan as a whole it would mean resurrecting and rethinking creative approaches to their traditional Islamic architecture that greatly diminished during almost seven decades of the Soviet rule.

http://198.106.254.194/idf/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/fp1447221431_camera6.jpg

http://198.106.254.194/idf/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/fp1447231431_camera7.jpg

The project, which was announced late last year, is designed by architects Foster + Partners.

http://198.106.254.194/idf/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/fp1447241431-2_camera08_ni.jpg

It consists of a new market complex plus three new towers containing offices, apartments and hotels.

http://198.106.254.194/idf/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/fp1447251431_camera1b.jpg

Project info follows:

"Foster + Partners reveals designs to transform Abu Dhabi’s historic Central Market into a dynamic new quarter with markets, shops, offices, apartments and hotels. One of the oldest sites in the city, Central Market will be a reinterpretation of the traditional market place and a new civic heart for Abu Dhabi."

http://198.106.254.194/idf/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/fp1505771431-2_camera15.jpg

The project comprises a combination of lower-rise, ecologically sensitive levels of retail, roof gardens - forming a new public park - and three towers, with generous underground parking. Pushed to the corners of the site to maximise the ground plane, the cluster of towers creates a striking new urban landmark.

http://198.106.254.194/idf/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/fp1447271431_camera5_2.jpg

Like a modern version of the souk, the new Central Market will be a city in microcosm. It will unite high end retail and luxury goods shops with individual courtyards and alleys, together with food markets and craft-based trades specific to the region. Avoiding the generic feel of the universal shopping mall, the scheme will fuse the local vernacular with global aspirations.

http://198.106.254.194/idf/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/fp1447261431_camera4a.jpg

While the towers relate to distance and skyline, the souk and the lower levels are scaled to the pedestrian. An intimate sequence of streets, alleys, courtyards, balconies and colonnades dissolve barriers between inside and outside, with flexible sliding roofs and walls to enable control of internal environments, and to maximise potential for natural ventilation. Like a patchwork quilt of gridded modules of varying height, the scheme is a highly articulated composition that bridges and unifies two city blocks.

I agree about the similarity to the Sears tower as well. Still, I believe that the very fact that the overall appearance of exterior cladding shown in the renders slightly resembles that of Bruce Graham's most famous creation only adds extra points to the recognition of Graham as an architectural icon and his gargantuan bestowal to the worldwide architecture as a whole.

I think it's just been announed as 281 metres to the roof, plus architectural features, which should take it to 302.

Construction of Abu Dhabi Plaza in Astana to require 6,600 foreign employees (http://capital-en.trend.az/economy/social/1492098.html)

Kazakhstan, Astana, June 22 /Trend Capital (http://capital.trend.az/), K.Konyrova/
Roughly 6,600 foreign engineers and workers will be involved in the project of Abu Dhabi Plaza residential complex in Astana, Industry and Trade Minister Aset Isekeshev said at the meeting of the Senate, responding to a question of senators.

"Such giant projects are few in number and its difference is that it is grand in scale and will be implemented with the use of new technologies, resulting in involving foreign engineers and workers of difficult specialty. Therefore, the maximum quota of foreign workers will amount to 6,600 people," Isekeshev said.
Generally, over 20,000 workers will be employed during the construction of a residential complex, he said.

"Of course, Kazakh workers will be employed, but foreigners with difficult specialties will be also involved to conduct complex operations," said the minister.

Earlier it was reported that Abu Dhabi Plaza will consist of several towers, the highest of which is 382 meters in height (88 floors). This will be the highest building in Central Asia and 14th in the world. The project costs over $1 billion.
Abu Dhabi Plaza will be built by the Aldar Properties company which is one of the leading construction companies in the UAE in the field of real estate. It is planned to finish the construction in 2012.

Kazakhstan has allotted an area of 4.5 hectares to construct the facility in one of prestigious districts of Astana. It is planned to begin the construction in early July.

The author of the Abu Dhabi Plaza in Astana is famous British Architect Norman Foster, who also designed the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation in Astana.

It seems like the difference in the new design is just that there are fewer towers. That's the sort of "design change" that could be built in later if demand requires it. Seems like a big "if" in a place like Astana, but what do I know?

Kazakhstan is getting a new tallest building

Architect: HKR Architects
Developer: Aldar, UAE

What I like about this project is not so much the building but the urban surrounding which seems very well planed with all those green areas as well as the visual perspective from and toward the tower.

Indeed. The name is so kitschy!

The name is appropriate. There was a prior agreement between Nazarbayev and the emir of Abu Dhabi to build this tower. Hence the name.

Noo, why did they change the design? :(

Foster's concept (http://i39.************/zn0va1.jpg) was so much more inspiring and innovative.

^^ Nope, Foster's concept looks like a '60s brutalist concrete crap. This one is post-modernist as the towers nowdays should be.

They better build below the ground to avoid such ugly buildings around.

I suppose the emir is funding the project but is he financing it completely or just partially. Anyway, I don't like the idea of naming a landmark building according to the major financial contributor. It sends the message that money is more important than national sentiment. In Belgrade, the oldest hotel and also one of the landmark buildings is named after Moscow but not because some Russian financed it but because of good historical relations.

I would say more elegant. What do you mean by boring? I hope that by "exiting" you don't mean Dubai/Las Vegas/Saudi Arabia style buildings. :puke:

"Hotel was built with the Russian capital, hence the name" - Wikipedia

Naming buildings/sporting events after the main financier is just a common practice.

Well the point is to have great relations first and naming landmark buildings later ,not the other way around. :)

hey, there's no free lunch. Naming rights are here to stay. Get used to it. Even subway stations are getting corporate sponsors now.

You don't like calling buildings after their financial backers? You never liked the Sears Tower then, I suppose?

There is no "Las Vegas-type" building

As for the tower and the name, it is being build by a Abu Dhabi state owned company, hence the name. Nothing strange there, so get over it.

Very nice design very nice to see some of the central Asian countries doing well.

i hope they stick close to the design on the fringes and actually makes boxes in an open atrium like it looks like on the rendering. will be very futuristic this way. might also be just reflections, abit hard to say really.

i actually kinda also get a portable hard drive or ,usb memory stick sensation from this design also :D

Hi Diplomatforall. You're doing great working in this thread. Please keep the updates up!

Would you mind re-sizing your photos a little bit so they fit on most monitors. Also, as a courtesy to Flickr I think it would be a good idea to set sharing to 'everyone', so as to make posting here easier (and legal)

How to credit Flickr

Failure to provide a link back to the photo page is the main reason why SSC was blocked on Flickr in the past.

Major Deegan,

No problem at all. This is the link on Flickr where I keep the pictures http://www.flickr.com/photos/dastans_world/

From now on, I will post only right-sized pictures. Initially, I thought some people might want to see the details of the construction site and that was the reason I was posting them that way.

But anyway, I am happy to update them once every two weeks.
