Project Brief

Astana, the new capital of the newly independent Republic of Kazakhstan, is being developed following a 2000 master plan by the Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa inspired by L'Enfant's plan for Washington, DC, with principal government buildings organized around a central mall. Our 60-storey Ritz-Carlton hotel and residences—to be the tallest building in Astana—is sited just off the mall. A grand glazed winter court will be a meeting place visiting dignitaries and diplomats sheltered from the city's climatic extremes. The 114-key hotel will provide banquet rooms and a state ballroom; above, 210 residences include numerous penthouses. The building sets back to reflect the program, rising to a glazed crown that will sparkle in the sunlight by day and glow like a lantern by night.

^^ I'm guessing Foster's pyramid is visible here in the upper right corner. What are those golden twin towers? Any info/images? (I'm not sure that I like those though)

The golden twin towers are called "the ministry's houses", you can give them a gander here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kazakhstan/1671513621/

Awesome design. It's good to see some art deco style buildings outside of the US in this day in age. Everyone seems to be building glassy buildings.

goddamn! robert stern should really stop designing buildings. this, in the 21st century, is nothing but decadent. and bad taste, as noted earlier.

what's interesting - foster's palace of peace, nazarbayev's palace, the trophy-looking tower, and the proposed foster-designed abu dhabi plaza are all on the same axis! whoa!

yes, must visit astana one day (:

bro, I think you're the only person that thinks this project is of bad taste!! I personally think it is a great revival of old art deco architecture and definitely refreshing and trully a classic, will never go out of style. A touch of New York.

It doesn't fit with the masterplan if you ask me. It looks ridiculous and should be placed in an area zones for other tall buildings. Placing in what looks like a conservative government area looks stupid.

Is it under construction? I can't see it. And as I know the territory on the picture is occupied by other buildings nowadays

As seen below on the pictures taken an Astana forumer in mid February, the developer fenced up the area around the future construction site. No machinery units were anywhere in sight, according to the forumer.

Why not? Here is the "neighborhood" they are building in:

The tower will stand directly to the left from the Baiterek monument, that monstrous World Cup doppleganger.

Visible on a Google Earth screenshot below are some of the U/C projects located on the Vodno-Zelenij Boulevard, or "The Axis".

from left to right:

- a 32-story, 152-meter tall Ministry of Communication tower, the so-called "cigarette lighter"
- 60-story Temir Zholy(Kazakh Railroad Authority) Headquarters;
- 54-story Emerald Quarter mixed-use complex;
- 22-story WTO complex
- 145-meter Kazakh Telecom building

Not shown on the render:

- a 88-story, 382-meter tall Astana Markets supertall tower:

Yeaahhh. there are a lot of new tall buildings (under construction) nearby, so we are constructing new business centre in Astana. And location of this building is almost ideal...

It looks kind of Empire State Building without that structure on the top. But it is nice :) Good for Asana
