Kunming (Chinese: 昆明) is a prefecture-level city and capital of Yunnan province, in southwestern China. Because of its year-round temperate climate, Kunming is often called the "Spring City" or "City of Eternal Spring" (春城).

Kunming is the political, economic, communications and cultural center of Yunnan, and is the seat of the provincial government. It is also home to several universities, museums, galleries and other important economic, cultural, and educational institutions. The headquarters of many of Yunnan's large businesses are in Kunming as well. It was important during World War II as a Chinese military center, American air base, and transport terminus for the Burma Road. Located in the middle of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Kunming is located at an altitude of 1,900 m above sea level and at a latitude north of the Tropic of Cancer. It covers an area of 21,501 km² and its urban area covers 6,200 km². Kunming has an estimated population of 5,740,000 including 3,055,000 in the urban area and is located at the northern edge of the large Lake Dian, surrounded by temples and lake-and-limestone hill landscapes.

Kunming consists of an old, previously walled city, a modern commercial district, residential and university areas. The city has an astronomical observatory, and its institutions of higher learning include Yunnan University, Yunnan Normal University, Yunnan Minorities University and a medical college. On the outskirts is a famed bronze temple, dating from the Ming dynasty. Kunming was formerly called Yunnanfu (云南府; literally meaning "Yunnan Capital") until the 1920s.

It is the leading transportation hub (air, road, rail) in SW China, with a rail connection to Vietnam and road links to Burma and Laos. Kunming currently has a new international airport under development, which is slated to be the fourth largest international airport in China. Situated in a fertile plain 640 km southwest of Chongqing, Kunming is an important trading center between the far west and central and south China. It is one of China's largest producers of copper. Copper is smelted with nearby hydroelectric power. Coal is mined, and the city has a few iron and steel complexes. Other manufactures include phosphorus, chemicals, machinery, textiles, paper, and cement. Although it was often the seat of kings in ancient times, Kunming's modern prosperity dates only from 1910, when the railroad from Hanoi was built. The city has continued to develop rapidly under China's modernization efforts. Kunming's streets have widened while office buildings and housing projects develop at a fast pace. Kunming has been designated a special tourism center and as such sports a proliferation of high-rises and luxury hotels.

From 2005 to 2010, the city of Kunming plans to nearly double in size, in terms of both population to eight million and area, and it hopes to be one of the trade, transport, financial and cultural centers of Southeast Asia. Kunming's transport links to Southeast Asia and elsewhere, particularly its air links, are steadily expanding, with direct routes already existing to all major Chinese cities, most major Southeast Asian cities and even major cities in Japan and South Korea.

Key development issues for Kunming include a local educated and talent pool that is less sophisticated than larger Chinese cities and the need for increased transport links.

nice climate, and Real Madrid pick it as the first location when they first went to China.

Two years ago I was in Kunming for a couple of days and from what I can remember, despite one negative experience, it left a rather positive impression on me. Generally, I think Kunming resembles to other large Chinese cities (at least the cities I've visited). But, as said before me, the climate was excellent. There were nice more modern bars as well as more traditional tea houses. Most people were very friendly. Except for those bums who tried to palm fake rolexes or fake brand sport shoes off on me in some pedestrian only shopping street. There were a lot of them and they were most irritating. One of them said something extremely rude in English when I refused. I was quite shocked and it was my only real negative experience with Chinese people. But it could have happened in any Chinese city.
For the rest I think that Kunming had a relaxed atmosphere and when I'm in that region I'll pay a visit to Kunming again.

Kunming is really a pleasant city to live in, I remember seeing the photos of the World Flowers Expo, they were magnificent.

i love kumming, it has a perfect weather, never too hot,never too cold, even in the summer it is very comfortable, and its building style is more of typical eas asian style, where the city is dominate by huge number of mid-rise and less commi blocks, i prefer this style than the normal chinese style. And i found that the cities has huge number of traditional chinese architects, thats the best thing, rather than destroy all of them, they mix it into the modern city, and thats what i called charming, and the last thing is ppl there are very friendly, they love ppl from other province, this is my experience though

SW China's Kunming to host 2nd commodity fair dedicated to South Asia

BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government said here Friday that the second South Asian Countries Commodity Fair is scheduled to be held in Kunming, capital of Southwest China's Yunnan Province, during June 6-10.

Chinese officials told a press conference that the upcoming fair is aimed to further aid trade between China and South Asian countries, help China import more from South Asia and reduce the trade imbalance between China and South Asian countries.

Chen Jian, vice minister of the Ministry of Commerce, said trade between China and South Asia had developed vigorously in the last few years, with two-way trade volume jumping to 66 billion U.S. dollars last year from 5.7 billion U.S. dollars in 2000.

Chen said both Chinese and South Asian economies were hit by the global financial crisis, which featured plunging exports, deceleration of economic growth and factory closure, and the commodity fair would help China to import more from South Asian nations and provide an opportunity for these countries to discuss how to expand trade and fight the financial crisis.

According to Chen, the Chinese government was taking a series of measures to improve trade with South Asian countries, including cutting tariffs, aiding import and export, and encouraging imports from South Asian countries.

Gu Chaoxi, vice governor of Yunnan, announced that the second commodity fair, like the first which was held in Beijing in December 2007, would also exempt booth and exhibition fees for all South Asian exhibitors. The Chinese organizer would also cover the transportation cost of exhibits once they were within the Chinese boundary.

Gu also promised to offer other free services for exhibitors from South Asia, such as publicity, marketing and quick customs declaration.

Gu also said three major events would be held on the sidelines of the upcoming commodity fair, namely, a high-level official meeting between China and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, policy briefings for investment in South Asia and trade cooperation meeting.

Gu said the upcoming commodity fair was planned to have more than 350 booths for exhibitors from seven South Asian countries, including India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

According to Gu, the commodity fair would be held alongside the 17th China Kunming Import & Export Commodities Fair, an annual regional trade exhibition sponsored by Yunnan and its neighboring regions including Sichuan and Tibet.

I lived in Kunming for 5 years until 2006.
I went back last year and didn't recognize my neighborhood!
It had completely changed in the last years.
It was amazing to see the developments.
At least the good weather was the same :)

It was pretty much the same for all Chinese cities. I don't even recognize my hometown even I lived there for 18 years.

Despite of the pollution and other side-effects, developing is always good for people.

Being in Kunming for 6 months after finish my degree, I think Im able to make some fair comment about this place. Climate is awsome,wont get too cold and not too hot. So much scenery around the city, the huge dianchi lake, which is larger than the city, and mountains for hiking. Very good sauna, I always stay there overnight, good environment,good internet cafe inside,nice food,and more importantly nice massage.
The city center is not that big,can get around the town easily( but not in the rush hour,you can be jam for freaking one hour which should only be 10 minutes drive in non rush hour time. The city is above 1000m sea level, so u cant sing well in just condition. But overall, Its a nice and cheel city, that i recommend people to visit.
