Motor Racing: Jaz out to win title as birthday gift for his father

By LIM TEIK HUAT

PETALING JAYA: Young Malaysian Jazeman Jaafar will be out to present his father the perfect birthday gift in the final leg of the Formula BMW Asia Series, which begins in Zhuhai today.

Datuk Jaafar Abdul Hamid turns 60 on Sunday and his 14-year-old son can make it a wonderful day to remember by winning the championship crown.

“He is the driving force behind my racing career and I will do my best to give him the birthday present he richly deserves,” said Jazeman before leaving for Zhuhai on Wednesday.

Jazeman is highly motivated to become not only the first Malaysian but also the youngest driver ever to win the Series.

The CIMB Team Qi-Meritus driver has secured eight victories in 18 races thus far and leads the standings on 660 points – 66 more than team-mate James Grunwell. Indonesian Zahir Ali of Singapore-based Team TARADTM is in third spot on 184 points.

Jazeman is aware he has to gun for race wins instead of playing it safe, given how things can quickly play out over four races.

“I will go into this weekend’s races with the same objective as in any race I compete in – go for a win,” said the Kuala Lumpur-based secondary school student.

“When you enter a race aiming for a fifth or sixth position, that is when mistakes creep in. It is important in this formula to stay focused and try to do your best. Otherwise you could get caught up in other competitors’ battles.”

Jazeman already learned his lesson from the third leg in Sentul, Indonesia, in July.

After failing to qualify on the first two rows of the grid, he was taken out of the race on the first day of competition by other battling drivers.

A subsequent disqualification in the same race meeting cost him the lead in the standings and he had to work doubly hard in the legs in Chengdu and Shanghai to get back on top.

“It is still an open championship with any of the top five still in with a chance to win the title. I will still need to do my best this weekend,” said Jazeman, who spent a lot of time in the gym and training on karts to keep his focus sharp over the last two weeks.

But Jazeman is also mindful that putting in his best effort does not mean having to win every race.

“There are many drivers in the field who wants to record wins and if you are not careful, you can get taken out of the race. It could prove costly to me,” he said.

“While I need to focus on winning, I will not let it get the better of me. Just look at how Lewis Hamilton stumbled in the last two races in the F1 season and lost the chance to become the youngest world champion in history.”

Jazeman shocker: Racer disqualified, loses title
By LIM TEIK HUAT

ZHUHAI: Malaysian racing driver Jazeman Jaafar's reign as the Formula BMW Asia Series overall winner lasted only hours after he and CIMB Team Qi-Meritus teammate Jack Lemvard were disqualified.

A post-race scrutineering report said that both their cars had gearbox selector springs that did not comply with regulations.

The stewards decided to exclude both cars from Race 22 after deliberations that continued late Sunday night, and later excluded the whole team from the championship as well, citing an earlier incident of technical non-compliance.

Jazeman and Lemvard had finished first and second respectively in what was the final race of the season, with 14-year-old Jazeman breaking the record books as the youngest-ever as well as the first Malaysian to win the Formula BMW Asia Series.

Indonesian Zahir Ali of Team TARADTM was declared overall winner with a total of 724 points.

The turn of events caught Meritus team members by surprise and they all decided to walk out of the prize-giving ceremony.

Firhat Mokhzani, chief executive officer for the team, said he has to discuss options to take with the team and has not ruled out taking up the appeal all the way to the FIA.

Disqualified Jazeman Gets Back His Championship Title

PETALING JAYA, Jan 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's promising and talented racing driver Jazeman Jaafar has got back the Formula BMW Asia title following a decision by the International Automotive Federation (FIA) today.

The FIA also decided that CIMB Team Qi-Meritus be declared the team champion, the team's principal Peter Thompson told a news conference here.

Jazeman and his teammate Jack Lemvard, who finished first and second respectively in the final race of the season in Zhuhai, China, were disqualified after a post-race scrutineering report said that both their cars had gearbox selector springs that did not comply with regulations.

Thompson said FIA conveyed the decision at 2am today.

"FIA is the ruling authority and they have requested that the organisers adjust the results. We are very happy with this news," he said.

Congratulations are in order for Jazeman Jaafar, 2007 Formula BMW Asia champion!
31 gennaio 2008

CIMB TEAM QI-MERITUS is pleased to announce that the appeals lodged with FASC against the decisions of the stewards at Zhuhai on 4 November, 2007 have now been determined in favour of the drivers and team.

Peter Thompson and team CIMB Qi-Meritus would like to thank Y.M. Tunku Datuk Mudzaffar bin Tunku Mustapha, Chairman of AAA (The Malaysian AAA) and the BMW Asia Series for having given their support to the team following the decision of the stewards to exclude cars no 33 and 78 from the last event in Zhuhai on November 4, 2007. After the race, the team was temporarily excluded from the 2007 Formula BMW Asia Series on the grounds that the cars did not conform to technical regulations.

Peter Thompson, Founder and President of Meritus: “Following the November race, Team CIMB Qi-Meritus lodged a valid appeal to the Chinese ASN (FASC). I am very thankful that the rights of the team were finally acknowledged. It was a long wait of several weeks until the classification was rectified by the FIA. I am pleased for the series and for the team but especially for Malaysia, for the drivers and their families, our team sponsors, fans and supporters that the matter is finally concluded. The team always knew that our cars were in conformity with the regulations and that it had properly lodged the appeals. We can now all move on and look forward to the series in 2008, and of course, to our full range of successful professional motor sporting activities. I would like to thank the team sponsors for their faith and confidence in our team.

Congratulations to our new Malaysian Champion Jazeman Jaafar: The decision means that Jazeman will be handed back the drivers’ title, making him not only the first Malaysian but also the youngest to win the Series. Qi-Meritus will also get the constructors’ trophy. Team CIMB Qi-Meritus is now champion of the 2007 BMW Asia Series. Jazeman was not able to attend our conference and share our feelings today at the PJ Hilton near Kuala Lumpur because he was testing for his new team (AM-Holzer Rennsport) in Zhuhai. The disqualification would have meant Jazeman lost out to Indonesian Zahir Ali by a single point. Now Jazeman wins the title with a 44-point margin! Jazeman, you are the 2007 Champion and we at CIMB Qi-Meritus are proud of you. Good luck in your future career!”

Firhat Mokhzani, Team Manager & Managing Director:"We are so pleased and happy with the decision of the FIA since this matter was going on for a long time. It’s great that Jazeman is the champion because he truly deserves the title and will be a great Ambassador for Malaysia"
