Unfortunately, I prefer the red 'L' shaped logo more than the building. I welcome the departure from conservatism, but is this the right design. Keep the 'L', but improve the base. The base is a disjointed mess. It is early on, so perhaps some improvements are still possible.

Good to see a major high rise go up in the CBD east of Yonge.

I agree. The podium does not carry through any coherence.
We'll hope that it is reworked, but its getting late in the game.

Late in the game? You're probably right. I seem to be clinging to the slim hope that the base will get streamlined. I'm abit surprised that Libeskind is happy with the base. It's immediately irritating to look at. I'm obviously not privy to certain limitations placed on this building's design, but surely he can recognize that the base doesn't work aesthetically.

I must say that the model gives a much better impression of this tower, I don't think that Libeskind got a fair shake in the WTC competition (even though I did like the concept, esp.the slanted rooflines, I did not care for the actual tower designs) by saying he had no skyscraper experience, which at that time was for the most part true.

However with this tower he can join the the skyscraper club, everyone should get a fair shot, and this is a nice tower for both Libeskind, and Toronto.

Word is that this building will be under construction soon. A member on urbantoronto.ca has posted a letter sent out to buyers indicating that a lunch will be held on Oct. 21 to celebrate the beginning of construction.

For those unfamiliar with the recent happenings concerning the design, here are the latest models:

The renderings on the left are old. The curved podium is no longer part of the design. The renderings on the right are the most up-to-date:

This is also an old rendering of the podium, but shows the south side of the tower, which has apparently remained intact:

This project is indeed underway - preliminary work has already taken place, including removal of some of the cladding from the Sony Centre (which will be enveloped by the L Tower)....City of Toronto documents show that closure of the Esplanade, the street directly facing the project is expected to take effect January 13, 2010, and will be in effect till May 31, 2013, to allow for construction.

toronto looks so damn big until you're actually there...then it turns into a small city.

A lot of north American cities are like that. We tend to cram everything into the downtown core while European cities tend to space things out more evenly throughout their cities.

The result is that downtowners rarely venture beyond the same 30-40 blocks and very quickly feel like they've been everywhere already. Toronto is really a city of 700,000 surrounded by 5,300,000 people we never get to see because we don't go 'out there'. Now if Toronto looked like the core all the way to Scarborough in the east, Mississauga in the west, and up to the 401, we wouldn't feel that way.

The land bounded inside would have to experience a population surge to 15,000,000 people for that to happen though. New York, Los Angeles, and Mexico City are the only cities on this continent that have achieved that feeling of 'endless city'.

Remember that the foot of the tower has been cut from the design, so podium construction won't take as long as once thought. Also note that digging is only going three floors deep. Considering that an old basement has already been dug, I predict a crane in just a few weeks.

interesting..could be alot better if you remove that circle-like shape at the base.

This is my favourite project in Toronto at the moment.

Skybean, great work on this and the other Toronto highrise threads, it is much appreciated.

i think this is a great addition to the neighbourhood, if only that o'keefe office tower had gone up as planned in the fifties (where the eds building is now) this would have really been been a massive corner i tried to find and image but couldn't find any online but there is an image in a book i have, might scan it in later and upload it here

Although the final cladding style and colors aren't very clear so far with these different renderings, I think that tower shape will fit in nicely right there.

Interesting side note; The 6 floor building in Jasonzed's last posted photo looks just like a larger version of our Courthouse here in my hometown.

I'll give you 100 bucks if you take off from the top on a skateboard. The question is, will you be able to receive it afterwards? :D

Ontopic: this tower is growing! Last time I checked was back in february I think.

This corner will be a nice break from Toronto's usual grid pattern. I'm still having trouble picturing this building in the skyline, but think it will surprise many people. Maybe when it gets a little taller, people will start paying it more attention. It's a better looking building than Bay-Adelaide.

Random shot of L Tower from Yonge yesterday... might i add, Yonge in the financial district is the nicest part of it in the city... i'm not a fan of the low-rise ghetto-looking shops that are in/around Wellesley. hate me for it.
This strip can pass as any american city.
