View Full Version : New technology, always a good thing?

Have just been thinking about this when realising how bored I'm getting of hearing my favourite songs on the MP3 player. No matter how good the song is, repetitive plays will eventually turn it into 'muzak.'

Remember hearing a song on the radio and saying 'Oh I love this one, have'nt heard this in years? Well you can't say that any more because if you really do love it it's on your feckin MP3!

Same dance with all the channels now available on telly. This has taken away a major talking point in work the next day as nobody watches the same thing, thus forcing people to discuss life issues, politics etc! erm..

excellent question... I was just saying to someone only a few days ago how mp3 players had turned music into something rather disposable... I would never ever ever throw a vinyl record away, but trashing an mp3 holds no bounds for me. Also, I kind of don't really appreciate an album quite so much... the sound itself just isn't enough... like it lacks soul... get me?

100% mate! can't help feeling we 'and' the younger generation have been robbed of one of life's greatest pleasures in this respect.

Remember the thrill of carrying home a new album (taking it out of the bag so everybody could see it if it was something cool like Bowie, Doors or whatever) and always having it playing as if by accident when friends/girls came around.

Pop music has always been a very disposable art form but today it's gone in the blink of an eye. (and thank feck for that in most cases!)

There's also the business of the arl bifters singing in the boozers after a few bevies, Danny Boy etc. Will eighty year olds in the future be giving it an all together now on Slap your bitch up and the like?

...yeah but the same goes for any other media to be honest (tapes being my favourite ;) cd's... video's... it's just not having a tangible object that makes the music so... erm, flimsy and worthless...

These days what have you got to show for your hard earned dollar... a file list? Ouch. And worse, lets say you actually pay for it, and then 5 minutes later you find the whole lot hanging around Limewire or whatever... that hurts as well...

Sorry to harp on with this shite but another instance more pertinent to this forum has just occured to me.

I come on here everyday to look at the brilliant photo's taken by some amazingly talented people but I'm starting to worry about all this photo shop malarky.

We all slag off the media for the use of air brushing on models and actors but are you not guilty of the same crime on our skyline? Gobshoite donnes bullet proof vest!

I worry about what is reality in this modern world and what is fake as it is becoming increasingly more difficuilt to tell. Everything we have preserved as a memory, a one off of an occasion can now be reproduced easily.

Arl arse now turns down Arthur Lee and contemplates early night before rediculously early flight!

Soon we will all live in Facebook, and none of this will matter....

regarding cds etc, i still buy them as they are great to have in a collection, but then i stick them on my ipod too. Its the best of both worlds, and its great when you go and get the new album from your favourite band :)

Trouble with all this nostalgia is where did it all begin? Did the older generation back in the 20s and 30s complain about the young people with their wind up gramophones no longer listening to proper music?

I'm always a step behind the latest technology so when I get an MP3 you can bet that it will be superseded by something new like an implanted brain chip that will give you dreams about the latest pop releases.

I think that young people nowadays are far more comfortable with digital technology and don't rely so much on having some physical object like an LP or CD.

I don't know what the old people of the late 21st century will sing but time has a curious habit of making the most modern and trendy thing seem quaint and old fashioned.

The current spate of new TV technology is annoying and i am holding off.
Will wait until the whole country is digital broadcast and more HD stuff is made and broadcast. Also current LCD and Plasma t.v. use upto 3 x more electricity than CRT, that is a backward step.

Digital broadcast, Sky, Freeview, Cable.
High definition
Plasma, LCD
Digital recorder hard drive or disc, blue ray or high def.

not to mention which sound system to use.

Get a decent Ipod and a Bose docking system Juxt :)

A PS3 has a built in Blu Ray player, and the likes of Blockbuster are stocking their HD stuff in Blu Ray. A PS3 is also pretty cheap compared to most Blu-Ray/HD-DVD players. :)

juxt, that's wrong m8 - an LCD screen should be far more energy efficient than a CRT of equivalent size.

You are right i think it is plasma that needs more energy, you can feel the heat coming off the screen of a plasma.

We had a valve radio, that took its time to warm up and gave off that wireless aroma that went well with the Home Service, Music While You Work and Mrs Dale's Diary.

Do I remember all that or is it something my grandmother told me?
