This past weekend, while walking past one of my favorite Toronto 'hoods, close to High Park & Bloor street in the city's west end, I spotted an Ukrainian gift store called "West Arka". I've heard of it before but never really knew where it was. They carry all sorts of stuff for typical nationalist or just plain nostalgic Ukrainian - videos, music CD's , tryzub-related jewelery, books, flags and such. I spotted this rack with maps of various Ukrainian regions and cities - Kiev, Odessa, Lviv, Kharkov, Crimea, etc. But among them I spot one particular map , with cyrillic writing on it clearly spelling - "Czerna Gora" - I wonder, whats a map of Montenegro doing here?:?

As it turns out, its actually a map of another region of southwestern Ukraine, in and around Carpathian mountains. Some photos are included with the map, and the region looks very similar to Durmitor national park in Montenegro:eek: There's gotta be something more to it...

So I was just wondering, what other similar cases have you heard of?:)

Region of Sopot is located in the District of Librazhd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Librazhd_District), Eastern Albania. It shares the same name as the northern polish town of Sopot.
It was ruled by warlord Gjergj Arianiti (1346 - 1470) whose daughter Donika was the wife of Skënderbeu.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/sq/thumb/f/fb/Wikiarianit.jpg/290px-Wikiarianit.jpg

This region is particularly lush in vegetation and prone to heavy snowfall. Particularly heading towards the town of Përrenjas which is part of the same district.

South-Eastern District of Kolonjë shares the same name as the city of Cologne, Germany.
Its capital is the town of Ersekë which lies in the foot of Mount Gramoz, Albania's 4th tallest mountain. One of my uncles comes from this region.

The village across the river from ours is Czarna Góra. But it's nothing amazing, "black" and "mountain" are fairly common words and it was bound to be repeated elsewhere. During my recent travels in Poland, I remember that I noticed a place called "Bosna" somewhere. I think it was a small village/town somewhere between Warsaw & Krakow.

And in northern Poland, in old Kashubian area (Gdansk and surroundings) , there's a lake called "Serbia" or "Serbian Lake" - something to that effect.

And Tuzla/Тузла is not just the third largest city of Bosnia-Herzegovina, its also an island in the Sea of Azov/Black Sea, an object of territorial dispute between Russia & Ukraine.:bash:

And last but not least, an old manor/castle in Kossovo, Belarus:)

That's right!!! A beautiful and fine example of the similarities in our heterogen region. Visegrad in Bosnia (where Ivo Andric's lovely novel takes place) - Visegrád in Hungary (where is the amazing medieval renaissance castle of Mathias rex) plus I mention Visehrad in Golden Prague (if I am right), which inspired Bedrich Smetana to compose a part of the Má vlast symphonic poem, one of my favourite after Vltava.

The region around Montana became part of the Roman province of Upper Moesia in 29 BC. Around 160, the military camp that was most likely founded on the remains of an older Thracian settlement, acquired city rights under the name of Municipio Montanensium.
