No other development that I know of, there is a site begging for development next to Cayman - part permanent caravan park like trailer park boys (very out of place!) and part run down apartment block. The fact it is a bit run down and underdeveloped makes me think a developer is holding on to it for bigger plans, otherwise they would have put some average two to three story apartment block on it to get some returns. It just looks out of place amongst the other nice places around it.

And yeah camping ground is rather empty, just a few hot tourists that I walked past, but will be booked out all summer as usual.

One of these developers , either The Pacific or The Eleven are advertising that their Block will be the last of its size ....I think thats alot of Crap  and I certainly hope not .......shall soon see

Ewwwwh has Nana got some Competition this Summer with all those Cuties about ? :poke::bowtie:

These people are so small minded, "the last of its size" if we are to believe that then the human race is about to stop developing and basically die.

Anyway that gets me worked up so I'll put it behind me and tell some useless but interesting fact: If the Elliot St Apartment block @218m (f*#K Yeah) was built next to Mt Maunganui @230ish m they would be very similar in size!

Yeah I do agree theres got to be a limit and would hate to see a building similar in height to the mount right next to it, but surely we can get to about 50m in the next 15 or so years? Even if its a street back from the beach to stop the shading.

Instead of these pissy 5 - 8 Levels back from the Beach , they should be 15 - 20 Levels .....and imagine the view .......you would probaly see Tauranga ..across the Harbour...right down to the Mount ..and all the way round to Whakatane ....well maybe not ....I'm getting dizzy

The only thing I worry about is Mt / Papamoa out-doing Tauranga, because Tga is the main centre and should have the largest and most buildings, IMO.

For some Reason TGAs CBD has lacked development over the Years ....only a couple of Apartment Blocks .....geez some Cities half the size have more impressive Skylines eg Palmerston North ........Although the TCC carry on as if they are a Supa City and they can demand what they want from Developers , a great example is the Novotel Fiasco .... It wouldn't surprise me to hear they have the TCC to bugger off and they are ganna build it in Whakatane  Its just dragging on .......lets be  and hope it starts soon ....and soon after Strand City

You've resorted to other peoples photos! That must mean I need to take my camera next time I'm going round the mount.

Interesting thing about that photo is that the building you see looks bigger now without the three story apartments that used to be next to it.

On another note, this view will be much denser come completion of pacific and eleven. Might even look rather impressive.

theres only two going up on the twin towers and marra have put there remote one up somewhere else over the mount so there should be four up at some stage...yeeehaaaaa!!! lovin it .
i agree with some of the earlier posts tauranga city should go 30stories and the mounts good for 10stories but heaps of them yeah thatll keep me busy as h&h are still putting his building up in town next to devonport towers and yes paul bowkers got my number for towercrane operator. so fingers crossed i might slip from one building to the next.
ive been all over the countryside driving crawler cranes for fulton hogan doing sheet piling and civil stuff. interesting but i prefer towercranes to the max so i look forward to being back in the air again till then ill try pop in more often k ?

Come to think of it ....alot of Double Storey Homes here in Melbourne now have Weatherboards { or should I say James Hardies Primeline .....actually a type of Cement Sheeting that looks like Weatherboards } on the Top levels to save on costs , however painted in the right Colours can look really good .
Ive Sold quite a few Homes Lately with Render over Foam to the upper Level , has better flexibilty with ground movement , better insulation and very strong .:) Do you know if those a real Roof Tiles or Aluminium sheeting that looks like tiles ?

Yes, I remember the protestors occupying the Town Hall trying to stop it being demolished (in about 1988).

It was replaced by the already built baycourt theatre up the road, and the new library/council buildings which were built on the town hall site.

If you could see photos of the old and the new (well, 80's) you would laugh ..... or maybe cry.

We arrived back in cess-pit Auckland today ;) and I already miss The Mount. It just gets better and better. The energy emanating from that area is so good for your soul. Everything is immaculately maintained, the people are very friendly, look healthy and probably have the most envious life-style in NZ. I smiled for two days, got a tan, chilled to the bone and best of all, I got my sex drive back ..... Craigy is smiling

I have now come to the conclusion that I am allergic to Auckland and I definitely DON'T belong here. Anyways, here are the pics from what was a FANTASTIC weekend ... thank you Baby, thank you Tauranga/The Mount

Fannytastic weather Marky - a little chilly but loads of sun :) the cheeks are nice and red again ;) ... there is a gr8 energy (not physical but more esoterically .... the complete opposite of Auckland which I find extremely draining) ... a special little place it is indeed. Met quite a few people who are ex Aucklanders and they don't have anything nice to say about AKL at all

^ That's a really interesting picture of the port area. It was initially developed as a port for the forstry industry. So with the plantations being planted during the depression in the 1930s, it makes sense that it took until the trees matured before looking for a suitable port to export them from.

Without the port Tauranga would probably be like Whakatane, a small service town with a bit of a retiree population. it's had huge growth since the 1960's.

For the record, I think Whakatane is lovely (for it's size)

Do the containers stack higher than the actual apartments? lol

25 meters

and im not joking .....

Port eyesore to stay despite complaints

09.12.2008
The escalating eyesore of the Port of Tauranga's container stack looks set to become a semi-permanent feature of life for hundreds of Pillans Point and Bureta residents.
Maxwells Rd householder Murray Read-Smith yesterday spoke out against the growth in the height of the Sulphur Point container terminal's stack.

But the council meeting offered little hope that the port could be persuaded to voluntarily reduce the height of the stack.

Instead he was told that the port company was within its rights to go higher _ another two containers higher to a total height of 25m.

Cr Mike Baker said going up another two storeys would have an effect but ``no one gets a free view'.

He said the council must not make it hard for the port company.
The height of containers cropped up as council was reaching a consensus on some key industrial issues as part of its review of the District Plan. The council is fast-tracking the review which goes out for public consultation later next year.

Mr Read-Smith said everyone who drove across from Otumoetai was affected by the container stack.

He highlighted how the council planted a green belt along Keith Allen Drive to mitigate the eyesore when the container port was established on Sulphur Point.

Now a ``great wall of containers' had sprung up where there were no trees _ behind land the council bought last year, opposite the boat ramps.

Council planner Nick Logan said preliminary discussions with the port company had resulted in the port refusing to lower the height of containers. Containers were permitted to reach 25m high on each side of the harbour.

The port told the council that the height of containers was vital to its plans to more than double business over the next 10 years. It needed the height because of storage issues and the mechanics of handling ships.

Councillors heard the port company had just got consent for a fifth crane and might eventually need a sixth crane to handle trade.

Cr Bill Faulkner said it was difficult to mitigate the visual effect of a crane but, with containers, it was more about landscaping or seeing if the height limits were in the right place.

Cr Hayden Evans said no one's view was guaranteed. ``If the port does not survive, then Tauranga will not survive.

Containers don't look pretty but they need to be there. They are a necessary evil _ we should not be making it harder.'

Mayor Stuart Crosby said the port had invested tens of millions on the basis of what was in the District Plan and he did not expect it would support altering the heights. He said the council should see what it could do on public land to mitigate the impact of the containers.

Cr Wayne Moultrie said the prosperity of the city was based on the profitability of the port. If it was restrained, Tauranga would revert to a second-class fishing village.

Cr Rick Curach was not prepared to do anything to compromise the port's operating environment, saying a 100 per cent growth in the port would be great for the community.

However on the basis that more assessments needed to be done on issues like the impact of extra cranes on airport height limits and landscaping to mitigate containers, the council opposed sticking to the status quo for the Port Business Zone.

In order to ``allow discussion', it will look at revising controls to limit the visual impact of port development.

F**k Marky I can't believe how much The Mount has changed - it is FANTASTIC ! and I would love to see the city council take some initiative and try to attract some of the big names to The Mount - such as - The Hyatt or The Hilton.

It has grown up so much and could quite easily become NZ's Riviera ... time for them to pull finger and get rid of that hideous caravan park :puke: ... it breaks my heart to see that on such prime land.

Wow, Tauranga is looking pretty good.
I am going to try and get there for a day or two when I come over there.

I love places where there is a nice beach in close proximity, to just laze around and forget about everything for a while.
