Mr. Detroit August 12th, 2003, 11:33 PM Looks like it is fairly dense, and stuff may go on, but there isn't a quality skyline. Therefore, 5

bigbruiser January 11th, 2004, 01:46 AM 5.5/10
Too say there's no skyline is a little over the top, but the skyline is small for a metro between 1.6-1.7 million. You also have to realize that we have 6 cities in our metro wiht over 100,000 people so everything is pretty spread out. Also being the military capital of the United States we can only build buildings but so high!!
ParraMan January 12th, 2004, 01:50 AM 6
A shame there are so many urban centres in this metro area, would have a much better skyline if that weren't so. As it is, too short, a bit too spread out by the looks of it, but actually better than I expected.

And not to be condescending, but is the Hampton Roads area really booming ? I'm just curious about the growth rate and new construction.
r2 June 28th, 2004, 10:39 PM hey i'm from here and i'm fully aware that there is no skyline lol! realistically, though, almost all office space in the region is concentrated in several edge cities that possess maybe one tall building what these pics dont show, however is that there is a decent residential skyline on the other side of that water
mauiboy63sea July 15th, 2004, 06:00 AM I gave N/NN a 4.5. I'm sure in by the next decade there will be more taller buildings. Onward and upward.

hauntedheadnc January 6th, 2005, 01:28 AM A great collection of cities that will have a much more impressive skyline very soon. Historic and dense, and pleasing to the eye. I gave it a 7.
Kevin J January 6th, 2005, 08:19 PM 4.0 Sorry, but Norfolk's skyline looks like that of an edge city, like Schaumburg, IL or Stamford, CT. I'm sure the multiple core cities in the metro are a big factor in this, but it doesn't change what's in those pictures.
th0m January 6th, 2005, 08:48 PM The location is really nice on the water, and despite the small skyline it has now, I think it has a great potential to become a really booming city/area. 6.5/10
John-Claude January 6th, 2005, 10:37 PM Standard skyline. Yet some nice-looking buildings.
6.5/10
Bender January 6th, 2005, 10:41 PM I spent a few months there. Not much to say.
By the way, I never got what's the official name of the metro area : Norfolk? Hampton Roads? Virginia Beach? Newport News? People refer to this area by using any of these names.
hauntedheadnc January 7th, 2005, 02:17 AM Hampton Roads is the name of the metro area, and it comes from an old meaning for the word "roads" which meant "harbor."
Hampton Roads consists of the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton, and probably one or two others. The major cities of the Hampton Roads metro area all have at least 250,000 people in their city limits.
Blahb January 8th, 2005, 03:51 AM 6.5. +Cool points for density, but not tall at all.

Sa Town Tx Gringo August 11th, 2005, 01:57 AM 7/10 Well lived there for few years loved the downtown had nice charm to it. And what was that thing when all the large wooden ship from all over the world showed up like in 2000 or something... But ive also read up and they are getting quite a few decent size buildings. I really wish Hampton roads would have just had one joint downtown thoe that would look really cool between Va beach, Newport News, Hampton etc
verycoolnin August 11th, 2005, 07:47 AM Also Here are some pics of the Town Center at Virginia Beach. It's not much now but it's building up.

verycoolnin January 14th, 2006, 02:44 AM This from Emporis:
Norfolk is the central city of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. Hampton Roads is one of the world's finest natural deepwater harbors. It is home to Norfolk Naval Base, the largest in the United States, as well as the headquarters of NATO's Allied Command Atlantic.
Norfolk was founded by the Virginia General Assembly in 1680 as port to serve ships sailing to England and the West Indies. It became an independent borough in 1735 and an independent city in 1845. Norfolk grew slowly until the Navy began building the base in 1917, shortly after the USA entered World War I. Military activity during World War II caused a surge in population from 141,332 in 1940 to 213,513 in 1950.
The military remains the city's largest employer. Port activity is also imporant to the economy. Hampton Roads handles more coal than any other port, serving as the distribution center for the coal fields of southwestern Virginia and West Virginia.
Norfolk began slum clearance under federal Urban Renewal programs in 1951. Much of the downtown area was demolished in the 1960's. Reconstruction began with the office core along East Main Street as well as the Scope cultural center on the north side of downtown. The Granby Street corridor was spared total clearance and includes a number of historic mid-rise buildings of architectural interest. At the center is the MacArthur Center shopping mall, built in the 1990's.
verycoolnin January 16th, 2006, 10:42 PM Granby Tower is now planned to be 34 stories at 485ft with a chance it could go higher. Some speculate that it could top Westin (planned at 501ft) for the title of the tallest building in the Hampton Roads and Virginia for that matter.
verycoolnin January 17th, 2006, 07:54 AM Really? No one cares to express their opinions on this area. I've got like 5 replies in a row.

NovaWolverine January 21st, 2006, 09:30 AM Well Va is a hell of a lot better econonomically than other places getting tall towers, we'll start to become more accepting of it, between arlington, tysons, richmond, and hampton roads, we can have some really nice skylines, either way, we'll be fine, and just imagine if they vote in favor of the $1bln a yr budget for the state's transportation, we'll accept richmond and norfolk as real priorities instead of planning little preliminary projects.

smartlake February 5th, 2006, 09:55 AM It seems nice. I had always wondered what that area looked like. For a state of its size, you'd think that this area's skyline would be more impressive. Isn't Virgina Beach the largest city, that is in this area, no?

Tom Ace April 9th, 2006, 10:28 AM I gave it a 5. Although there are valid reasons as to why the skyline is small, it is still small. It is all boxes, has no standout building and little height. The growth on the pictures for 2020 looks pretty good and combined with the natural beauty of that area of the country I could definitly see this area moving up but as of now I have to give it what it deserves.
slow-v6 April 10th, 2006, 01:12 AM I am stationed in Virginia Beach and really dont find the skyline of Norfolk too impressive.. I gave it a 6/10.. It looks really good when all the christmas lights are on.. I give it a 7/10 during that time..

usermel April 5th, 2009, 10:13 AM From Norfolk and I give it a score of 5.5!! Have to be honest even though its my home and I love it but, the skyline is average for a metro area of 1.7 million people. Now the positive is there are projects on the way that will change the skyline in the next 10 years. 2 buildings i know of coming are to be built in the next 2 years so give Norfolk time because skyscrapers arent the focus of our military based area. The econmy is very strongly influenced by the military and tourism(Va Beach/Williamsburg) not the financial sector.
christos-greece April 5th, 2009, 11:30 AM 8.5/10
usermel April 5th, 2009, 06:12 PM Have to admit my hometown has added some flavor to its skyline im bumping it up to 6.5 for now. In about 5 years will be a 7.5!! Lots of new buildings planned for Norfolk,Virginia should give a more dense look! I think we have 2-3 more new buildings planned for downtown to be complete in the next 3 years!!!! L.G.N.M

The earlier posted pics need this one on page one to show the newer buildings as well as the new construction on the Wachovia Center going up as well. Some good pics are here for Norfolk but, we need a great picture angle wise to display Norfolks growing skyline. Seen Roanoke and Richmonds scores and we appear to have more 3 or belows than the 3 cities!!
Love my fellow Virginia cities but, cant believe we have such low scores compared to the in state cities. Oh well, it is what it is!!! L.G.N.M:):):)

JRQ May 21st, 2012, 03:34 AM Skyline aside, Norfolk is actually a really cool city. Awesome waterfront, constant fun activities, huge military presence, great downtown with light rail, and not that bad of a skyline for a 250k city. If you're ever around the city, come visit!
midrise May 21st, 2012, 05:08 AM :lovethem:Yes, the true urban oais of the Hampton Roads meto area. With neighborhoods, love Ghent, and a walkable downtown and real culture, with attactions, and yes true grit too. A solid 8 more than a beach to get lost in. Thank you for the real thing.:cheers1:
Manitopiaaa May 21st, 2012, 09:03 AM 7/10. The height and the boxy nature of the skyline are the worst problems but the location is beautiful and it doesn't look particularly ugly.
