View Full Version : So, LCC, When's The New Gallery?
Mark76 November 12th, 2007, 12:07 AM I mean, you're building a Cultural Quarter. Right? And art is part of our culture. Right? So... isn't a snazzy new gallery a given? I mean, okay we have the New Walk Museum and the Granby Street gallery; but I'm sure a city of this size can support more than two.
Right?
Leicity82 November 12th, 2007, 12:13 AM Good point.
One of the older buildings around there would make a great gallery. The LCB Depot has a kind of gallery too.
Mark76 November 12th, 2007, 12:19 AM Maybe it could house the Picasso ceramics collection.
Leicity82 November 12th, 2007, 12:27 AM Yes Leicester's very own 'Museum of Picasso Ceramics' (probably be the only one in the world!)
Mark76 November 12th, 2007, 12:29 AM Also: How many people are aware that Leicester is home to the largest collection of German Expressionist art outisde Germany?
Leicity82 November 12th, 2007, 12:30 AM Not many I assume.
Mark76 November 12th, 2007, 12:34 AM It's in the New Walk museum, in case you want to go and have a look.
Leicity82 November 12th, 2007, 12:37 AM I knew they were there, but I haven't been to the museum in ages - last time I went was with school during the Anne Frank exhibition. We're quite lucky to have such a museum.
Perhaps it's definitely time to add another gallery to the city centre?
Mark76 November 12th, 2007, 12:41 AM Yeah. I'm sure the Leicester museums people could easily fill the space left in the NWM if we had a dedicated modern* art gallery. Museums usually have more stuff than they have room to display.
*Modern in this instance meaning Late 18th C. and above
outsider1 November 12th, 2007, 11:48 AM A well designed, iconic maybe, modern building to house the cities Picaso collection if well advertised would be a major tourist attraction for the city.
Leicity82 November 12th, 2007, 11:53 AM That would be another great opportunity to show that Leicester can have great architecture.
Even better, why doesn't Leicester have a 'Tate Midlands'? Now that would be a great crowd puller.
Mark76 November 12th, 2007, 01:22 PM I bet our city council wouldn't even think of offering them a site.
If there is one it'll probably go to Birmingham or "you know where"
Lears City November 12th, 2007, 01:30 PM Imagine Leicester City Council being proactive and getting the message out there, that we want to be home to a "Tate Midlands" art gallery. No you can't imagine it, because our council is utterly undynamic. Where is your eagerness to fight for our city LCC?
braunstone geezer November 12th, 2007, 03:41 PM dont think much of that picassolo ceramics stuff, ur better off going for a look round habitat
i dropped an old vase once in a museum in london and the guard said 'that vase was two thousand years old' i said 'thank fuck for that, good job it wernt new'
the old ones are still the best

I thought I'd jump the gun and I emailed the arts dept of LCC and suggested Leicester being home to 'Tate Midlands'.
I'll let you know of the reply if any.
Mark76 November 12th, 2007, 10:58 PM If Tate aren't interested in opening a branch here maybe we could lobby the Guggenheim people. :D
Leicity82 November 12th, 2007, 11:15 PM Yeah.
Leicity82 November 13th, 2007, 08:03 PM This is the email response I received for the LCC Arts dept:
Thank you for your email outlining your suggestion for a Tate Midlands gallery in Leicester's Cultural Quarter. Comments and views on Leicester's cultural offer are always gratefully received.
You may be interested to know that planning for the Digital Media Centre, the third phase of Leicester's Cultural Quarter, is well underway. Details of this project are available at:

Information on other regeneration projects in Leicester can also be viewed using the relevant navigation links.
Once again, many thanks for your comments.
Well will anything be done about it I wonder??? :dunno:
Lears City November 14th, 2007, 09:57 AM That response is worthless really. Would have been better if they had said, "Thanks for your suggestion about a Tate Midlands in Leicester. May I point out that this is Leicester City Council you have emailed and we don't do innovation I'm afraid. You may be best emailing Birmingham or Nottingham councils, because they are interested in promoting their cities. Cheers anyway..."
Leicity82 November 14th, 2007, 03:42 PM ^^
Unfortunately true. :ohno:
