Very, Very nice! I really like it! :okay: can't wait to see first event in Arena, january the 17., with one of the best croatians rock band "Prljavo kazalište" or "Dirty theatar" by Alans ford second episode, in strip forme of course.

it looks like it has an oversized floor. Why are the seats so far away from the baseketball court or what other sport was is designed for. According to architects it was designed mainly for handball. Handball pitch is quite bigger than basketball pitch.

That is one great arena. I also like the fact that the first tier is square shaped, unlike round ones that most other European arenas seem to prefer for some reason.

The grand opening is today at 6pm.

It can, but it won't :) Hockey isn't that popular here... clubs (those 3 or 4 that exist) have like 100 people on games :) If they decide to install hockey ring one day tho it won't be problem.. they did some pre work for that.

I think Cibona stays in D. Petrović hall, while Dom Sportova is going under reconstruction. There are some plans and proposals for a new (4th big hall) in Zagreb placed near Maksimir stadium --> Rukometni Dom with a capacity of 6,000. But since the world crisis is still actual, chances for this new hall are actually very poor in next couple of years.

According to RK Zagreb officials they will play matches against Celje and Chambery already in Arena.

Cibona will only play bigger Euroleague (Euroleague final 16 (and futher if we qualify...) matches.

Zagreb Arena to become Lexus Arena?

Zagreb Arena is set to change its name to the Lexus Arena after a reported 1 million Euros offer from the luxury car brand, a newspaper has reported.

The 'Vecernji list' daily said officials from the car manufacturer were set to make the offer for the multi-purpose sports complex in the Laniste neighbourhood of the city.

But Zagreb Arena head, Zdenko Antunovic, refused to comment on the reports and said only: "We are planning to sell the Arena name but nothing has been arranged."

Bamboo was prominent in this year’s structural design category with three of the eight projects shortlisted using bamboo as their main structural form. The judging panel was impressed by the research and experimentation that had been done with this material, particularly demonstrated by the wNw Bar in Vietnam by Vo Trong Nghia Co. Using bundles of bamboo, jointed with bamboo pegs, the team created a vast circular gridshell dome with a phenomenal span of 17m. Also highly commended was the Richmond Olympic Oval Roof, designed by Fast + Epp structural engineers. The roof features composite glulam-steel arches spanning some 100m with specially constructed secondary panels made from readily available timber planks spanning around 14m between. The judges liked the use of a discarded material – the timber had been killed by a recent epidemic of the mountain pine beetle - and the intelligent design of both the main span and secondary unit.
However the Arena Zagreb by Upi-2m was the outright winner of this year’s structural design category for its simple, elegant and efficient structural concept - the external inward leaning ribs or columns, braced by a ring beam, supported the suspended roof. The prestressed prefabricated columns, which were between 27m and 39m in length, were a huge undertaking in their own right. Upi-2m had to design an erection system for the large cast on site members, working with local contractors, who at first had said it couldn’t be done. The judges felt the finished stadium transformed the area, providing a catalyst for development.

Croatia Zagreb handball club stopped playing games of Croatian league in Zagreb because they couldn't get even players relatives to watch it. They only get good crowd for Champions League... rest of the matches they play "on tour" in rest of Croatia.

After 20 years of not having a team in competative and pro league people got crazy after hockey and its expanding and growing incredibly fast. Just recently we got new teams in Osijek, Slavonski Brod and Dubrovnik... now its just up to local authorities to build them covered ice rinks.

But its better than nothing... at least interest in game is increasing.. kids are starting to get into it. Slavonski Brod also has youth teams...

Karlovac has solid youth team...

Its just shame that Delnice don't have a team even tho they have new covered ice rink. Medveščak and Mladost youth teams go and play there from time to time but it would be shame not to put that one to use. Hopefully they'll get a club there one day.

Is this arena not supposted to be home court for "Cibona" Zagreb?? It seems that Croatian basketball club is still playing their Euroleague games in their old Darzen Petrovic hall instead of using this fabulous arena.

Like mentioned... handball team uses it for all European matches and as of january ice hockey team will play there (4 matches of regular season and later playoffs).

Cibona might play Euroleague in it in next seasons if they get out of the mess they are currently in. So far they only used it for NLB final 4 last season.

Cibona is on the edge of bankrupcy, there is a total mess in the club. Accounts are blocked, players are playing for free (!), and the club even had a lot of problems with preparations of ther own hall (Drazen Petrovic centre) because they couldn't pay the workers. After all those problems, they are very pleased to play at any hall, so Zagreb Arena is only a dream.

On other hand.. Emil Tedeschi (Cedevita owner) said that they will probably play there if they qualify for Euroleague next season.. which might not be that impossible at all considering how much money is being pumped into that club..

Nice Arena, but why is there so much space between the first row and the playing surface on one end of the arena? That's the only thing I don't like about it.

Because its mainly used for handball (ice hockey as of late), shows and concerts.. so it requires huge floor.

C'mon, let's be honest, it broke the record with two games: Croatia against Romania and against Ukraine (and not even the host succeeded in selling out the arenas, only about 8.000k spectators. Imagine if it would have been handball)...
As for the rest of the tournament ... it was rather poor with those huge venues in Zagreb(+15k) and Split(+10k) being only about 10-15% full, even less (some games were played with only a few hundred spectators)... If you have 2.000 spectators in a venue like Zagreb Arena, it looks rather sad. They should have organized Croatia's (and maybe Spain's) games in Zagreb, and the others in those nice and modern arenas in Varazdin or Osijek.

Futsal has still a long way to go, to be as popular as other European team sports, but they are on the right way. :cheers:

Games for Croatia were sold out 11k but the weather conditions in the country were terrible 20-40 cm of snow closed roads(btw.Split is on coast with Mediterranean climate) so 8k is very respectable number. In Zagreb Arena 4500 is good number for futsal games(Portugal,Spain games) and now Croatia will play 2 games with 15k per game and numbers of attendance will go well over 100k for tournament.

2k for futsal on non host team matches is actually pretty incredible. On most of the previous tournaments there was 50-100 people on such games. In Hungary even final game had less than some games in group phase here (not Croatia games).

2k for futsal on non host team matches is actually pretty incredible. On most of the previous tournaments there was 50-100 people on such games. In Hungary even final game had less than some games in group phase here (not Croatia games).
I think that only when big football nations, like England, France or Germany, will start to get involved in this sport seriously, than we can expect tournaments with a much higher public interest. At the moment futsal is at a very early stage in most of European countries.

Speaking of records :)...The highest attendance for a futsal tournament in Europe was in Barcelona '96 (Palau Sant Jordi), when 16.000 spectators watched the Fifa WC-Final between Spain and Brazil.
