chongqinghero August 14th, 2003, 01:57 PM Presently Chongqing is China's biggest municipality in terms of area and population.
(4 municipal cities in PR China are Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing).
Chongqing is a famous cultural city with a history of 3000 years and a glorious revolutionary tradition. Towards the end of the Old Stone Age approximately 20000-30000 years ago, mankind began to live in Chongqing.
Chongqing was originally the capital of the Ba Kingdom over three thousand years. The place was called Jiangzhou during the Western Dynasty. Later on, it was changed into Yuzhou during the Sui, Tang Wudai and Northern Song Dynasties. Before long, the place was renamed once more as Gongzhou for a short period of time. In 1189, Emperor Guang Zhong of Southern Song Dynasty was first conferred here on Prince Gong and then ascended the throne. For sake of celebration, he renamed Gongzhou as Chongqing, that means double celebrations. This name remains all the same over the previous eight hundred years.
In the year of 1362, Ming Yuzhen, the leader of a peasant uprising army during the last period of the Yuan Dynasty, established the peasant regime of Daxia Kingdom and assigned the city as its political center. In 1937, after Nanjing was occupied by the Japanese invaders, the Kuomintang government moved from Nanjing to Chongqing and designed the latter as its war time capital. During World War II period, Chongqing was the seat of headquarters of US Forces in China-Burma- India Theater Being as the wartime capital of China, Chongqing began to develop into a modern industrial city at the end of 1940s.
In the years following the founding of New China, out of being the location of both the Southwest Bureau and the Southwest Military and Political Committee under the Communist Party of China, and as the municipality directly under the central government for a short period of time, Chongqing had practically become the political, economic and cultural center of Southwest China. In 1954, Chongqing became a city under the jurisdiction of Sichuan provincial government. In 1983, Chongqing took the lead in experimenting on comprehensive economic structural reforms and was granted provincial jurisdiction over economy. Ever since the resolution of the State Council being approved on March 14,1997 by the fifth session of the Eighth National people¡¯s Congress, Chongqing has gained the status of the municipality directly under the central government, the fourth one together with Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjing. Chongqing today administrates original Chongqing, Wanxian, Fuling and Qianjiang Region.
With natural scenes mingled into humane landscape Chognqing's tourist resources are comprehensive and widespread. The long and particular history, brilliant culture, mighty mountain and rivers have brought about numerous well-known scenic spots, historic relics and magnificent landscape to Chognqing. There are in Chongqing 20 large tourist resorts with more than 1300 scenic spots. Among them over 300 spots and tourist resorts have been initially developed including 4 key state level scenic resorts, 6 key historic relics under state protection, 110 historic relics under city preservation and more than 12000 other historic relics. The enchanting night view of the city, the praised historical relics of the Three Kingdoms Period, the elegant Dazu Stone Carvings and the majestic Three Gorges along the Yangtze River are attracting numerous tourists both from home and abroad.
¡¡¡¡Chongqing has convenient land, water and air communication facilities. There are over 50 domestic and international air routes and more than 100 deluxe cruisers sailing on the Yangtze River. Over 80 star-rated hotels are equipped with well facilities.
¡¡¡¡By the end of 1998 Chongqing had hosted 21. 96 person/time tourists with a foreign exchange earning of 88.37 million US dollar.

Chongqing is so lively, and it has a very nice skyline at night. Though, it's disappointed that the city is a bit smoky and dirty. :(

fox1 September 26th, 2003, 06:10 AM i have been to chongqing. it is a very hilly, very very polluted (even by chinese standards) and a great mix of poor and new money. it is a hard, tough city located deep in the chinese hinterland.. like, really deep. the people's language is a very different kind of chinese than you hear in shanghai, beijing, guangzhou (where one hears more putonghua than expected) and nanjing. when i was in chongqing:

Franky January 10th, 2006, 12:36 PM This is definitely my second favourite city in China. I only like Shanghai better because it's so futuristic. I voted 10/10 because it has a substantial count of highrises as well as some pretty tall ones currently under construction.
I totally love how this city is built on steep rocky hills and how the modern skyline contrasts with the seedy-looking areas around. Totally in love with this city, though I've never been there...yet.

isaidso December 1st, 2010, 11:40 AM Very very good. Isn't this the fastest growing major city on the planet? It grows by something astonishing like 800,000 people/year?
Pfeuffer December 1st, 2010, 04:55 PM I think that SH still holds that title !
ChitownCity December 1st, 2010, 05:13 PM Anything this dense gets a 10/10 from me :) I don't know why people are taking the architecture into account, we're rating the city (Urbanity) not individual buildings... Tokyo certainly doesn't deserve anything below a 10....
Eduardo L. Ramirez December 1st, 2010, 09:19 PM Very very good. Isn't this the fastest growing major city on the planet? It grows by something astonishing like 800,000 people/year?
That sounds very much indeed. Chongqing's municipal area has 32 million inhabitants currently covering an area as large as Austria, but the so-called urban area only has 5 million. Maybe the growth rate (if it is really that high) is thus influenced by flight from the rural areas, partly within the same city limits (still doubtful)? Or maybe the growth rate of 800,000 people annually simply counts for this whole giant 32 million municipal area (hardly to be called a metropolitan area) - including several other seperated cities -, which wouldn't be that extreme then.
isaidso December 1st, 2010, 10:59 PM I was trying to figure that out. 800,000 probably does refer to the entire municipality which is very large geographically. Still a very fast growing city.
I think that SH still holds that title !
Shenzhen or Shanghai?
IrishMan2010 December 1st, 2010, 11:49 PM Definitely deserves an 8/10.
fragel December 2nd, 2010, 12:19 AM Foreign Policy published an article saying 'Chongqing, the largest city you have never heard of' or something like that two months ago. Now I believe more and more people will be hearing about it from time to time.
The city used to belong to Sichuan Province. In 1997 it became China's fourth direct-controlled municipality, adding a large rural area from Sichuan Province to its administration. It has an area about 80% of South Korea, but only has an urban center about 600 km^2 out of the total 82,300 km^2. The skyscrapers you see in most threads are densely located in the tiny urban center. However, rural areas have been transformed into urban areas during the last decade, and residents in such areas become urban residents. In the next decade, it is estimated that 800,000-900,000 rural residents will become urban residents each year--that is where the number come from.
The city's got potential, though it has a lot of catch-up to do to be comparable to any of the top four cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen) in mainland China, simply because many counties under its jurisdiction are still poor rural areas. I somehow think Guangzhou is undergoing the fastest urban transformation currently in China, or Tianjin. Chongqing is doing great in its urban center, but is just way too big to grow fast as a whole.
nonetheless, the skyline of downtown Chongqing is amazingly dense. It overall looks very impressive, especially with its hilly landscapes and big rivers.
Pfeuffer December 2nd, 2010, 01:12 AM I was trying to figure that out. 800,000 probably does refer to the entire municipality which is very large geographically. Still a very fast growing city.
Shenzhen or Shanghai?
Shanghai :)
sakai December 2nd, 2010, 03:33 AM not part of the 'skyline' per se but it would look soo much better if they fixed up the river banks a bit
isaidso December 2nd, 2010, 06:01 AM Chongqing is changing so quickly that it's just a matter of time before it all starts coming together. There are clues about the old city (river bank) all over the place. I just hope I get to visit before these remnants of the past disappear forever.

deepblue01 April 29th, 2011, 11:23 AM So what would you say about these buildings in CENTRAL Hong Kong?
http://oi51.tinypic.com/33awgtc.jpg
I would say that they are screaming out for redevelopment. I agree that redevelopment in HK is a lot harder than in China because of the costs and protests which are always attached to every redevelopment. I guess the thing that makes asian skylines Asian is the fact that they always contain a lot of residents which is reflected in the fact that they have large populations
Jonipoon April 29th, 2011, 12:30 PM ^^Not to mention the small amount of space. I was surprised when I visited Hong Kong, I expected the streets to be much more cleaner, but they were in the same condition as any big Chinese city like Shanghai or Beijing.

Uaarkson July 13th, 2011, 07:06 AM I'm not too impressed by the skyline, but man I love Chongqing. The atmosphere these pictures give off resonates with me. It's earthy, misty, and warm. The river bend is wonderful.
isaidso July 13th, 2011, 09:26 AM I'm surprised people don't like this skyline more than they do. It's a little known city globally, but it's skyline is better than anything I see in Europe. Architecture and quality need to improve though.

khoojyh January 4th, 2012, 06:25 PM Chinese is great in building city. It's city can be transformed within 10years. Let see other major example, Shenzhen, Shanghai Pudong, Xiamen, Beijing, Tianjin. Incredible!!!
Leonardo M. Gaz January 4th, 2012, 09:37 PM 10/10
saybanana February 11th, 2012, 12:23 AM 9.0 Lots of buildings. Built on a hill so it looks taller than it really is. The river makes it special. didn't the big dam raise the river level higher?
Hot Rod February 11th, 2012, 07:55 AM actually, it is not built on a hill. Jeifangbei is flat, like a table top, just up from the river.
If it were built on a hill, it would be even taller. You can see buildings get lost inside of the core of Jeifangbei, this would NOT be so if it were a hill.
