Wow, I really really missed Jabal Akhdar ! ( are you sure it took 7 hours from Dubai ? It should be around 5 hours... its just around Nizwa --unless if you made stops)

I went to Jabal Akhdar last year in February, but it was cloudy and on the way back to Nizwa we were hit by hailstorm , and that only road was blocked by wadis !

Jabal Akhdar is very beautiful-- There is a very imposing Purple mosque and we ( me and my Omani friend Khalid ) visited several villages before heading to Wadi Bani Khalid and the old ruin..

Did you visit Jabal Shams too ? Next time I wanna visit Jabal Shams, the highest mountain in Oman ( 3500 metres high ).

Alhamdulillah. Am really glad to see your salah . Are they your classmates or relatives ?

How much was the rent for villa ? Is that in Nizwa or Bahla ? Accommodation in Oman is so costly and I think staying in such villa requires you to pay around 100 OMR per night.

I think I made mistake: the name of the famous wadi in Jabal Akhdar is Wadi Bani Habib, not W.B. Khalid.

More pics, please/

^^ Believe me the lunch was anything but delicious. The guys are either supervisors or one of those we used to supervise in summer camps in the last 5 years. The villa is located on the Green Mountain, it cost us 400 AED only.

^^ I like the tradition of eating together in the same plate-- it was something new to me. 400 AED/ 40 OMR that's quite cheap in Oman standard ( and it's a double-storey villa !! ) . The biggest problem for tourists in GCC state is the Super high cost of accommodation and the lack of budget / youth hostels available for backpackers and middle-income travellers. ( Do you know that you can stay in a nice 3-star hotel in downtown Kuala Lumpur for just AED 20 per night ).

It's nice to see you went to Wadi bani Habib + the old ruin. But the stairs is quite long . I think you can see many Walnut and apricot trees in Jabal Akhdar cuz it's the season .

I wish I could join that trip too !

This is the first time I see photos of Jabal al-Akhdar. My Omani friend from Diba was always praising it, saying you drive in the desert and see a green mountain surrounded by mist in the distance, and then you actually approach it and as you go up it gets so cold.

Sounded cool, but I agree with you it looks like a brown/olive green patchy mess there... but I like the photo with donkeys and the old houses. It's like Yemen but safer :p

Did anyone tell stories of black magicians around the campfire? :) For some reason Oman and Morocco have a reputation for sorcery.

hmm.. so you climbed down to Muscat/Seeb before heading north to Hatta border then onwards to Dubai.. Why not using Al-AIn/Buraymi border its shorter and takes less than 5 hrs... Thankx again for the pics.

I think Halwa shops can be found too in UAE ?

thers.

What's the dish made of?
When I was in Oman they only served us international cuisine.
And I once bought some sweets in the souk. I didn't like them

smussuw
November 18th, 2007, 05:48 AM
^^ It was white rice with "la7am nashef" (don't ask me about it, I don't know how it is made). I usually like it but it isn't well made this time.

@ eklips, no not much. They rarely check our luggages and we don't need to get off the car. We can go through with our identification cards only. We have; however; to insure our cars there, which takes less than 10 minutes. We have also to pay 20 AED to Oman's checkpoint when we go back to the UAE

@ Skyprince, we've gone through Al Ain checkpoint but came back through Hata checkpoint. And yes, we have Halwa in the UAE but you know :P

Is there a rule when you guys wear dishdasha and when you wear western cloths? or is it up to the individual ?

smussuw
November 18th, 2007, 10:51 AM
^^ It is the dishdasha for work.

Skyprince
November 18th, 2007, 11:21 AM
^^ I prefer wearing dishdasha... I went out for the whole day with dishdasha ( I took Khalid's :D ) in Muscat and everybody believed that I am Omani :P

One big thing I noticed when crossing into Oman via both Hatta/ Al-Ain borders is the vast grassland..... which is absent on UAE side ( desert, desert, and desert all the way ! )

Actually I would expect that from Saudi, I didn't know in Oman or the Emirates men and women couldn't mingle either. I mean, we're talking about an excursion outdoors, not a raunchy orgy...

But, aren't universities mixed? I thought they were.. I don't get it, and I'm not being provocative.

I'm not from one of the Gulf countries - and I don't find it surprising. I was a student of Dhaka University Physics Department. About 30% of the students in my department were female. In some departments there were more females than males. Free mingling wasn't normal at all. Male guests were not allowed in female hostels and female guests were not allowed in male hostels. Many facilites - such as the gym or recreation centers were either separate or male and female students were allowed at different times. It have come out of university quiet some times ago - but these things are pretty much the same.

^^ Anton, why in Spain men and women mingle freely with each other ?

Because both men and women can be good friends not necesarily involving sexual intercourse.
If you think you can't control your impulses that's sad... but I tell you, women can be as good friends as men are.

Anyway, nobody answered my question and I'm curious, are universities in the UAE mixed or segregated? That's why it struck me that there were no girls in the pics, I thought they had mixed universities over there, that's all.

Government schools and universities are segregated. Private schools are mostly segregated too while some are mixed. Private universities are mostly mixed.

It is not common to find Emiraiti females and males going out together.
