Zaha Hadid’s Kartal Urban Transformation Project
The project prepared by world’s renowned architect Iraq-originated Zaha Hadid proposes a new architectural network of geometric shapes for Kartal and Pendik. Two sites will be connected. A new metropolis will be established, connecting roads, railways and residential areas. Formation of a new identity and its embedding to the current one is planned.
Business and residential towers are present in the project. There will be parcels ranging from 2,500sqm up to 25,000sqm. Mutually raised towers will be established. Free spaces will be allocated for the parks in sides. All the geometrically-shaped buildings will be combined. There will be more of business towers and less of residential buildings. There will also be cultural fields, opera house, park, hotels, restaurants, yacht port and marina
Project Features:
- A strong and unique relationship between organized ideas of project and its material presentation
- “Regulating network” ’s flexibility and loose embrasure system proposed by the project and their successful application of connecting current building structure in the district
- Successful distribution of usage and density over the land within urban and local framework
- Adaptable and a regulating environment will facilitate the creation of furnishing in the project’s development in the future
- The potential of the project for creating stages and parcelization
- The stress of relationship with the tradition planning elements: bloc-type building, parcels in various sizes and shapes, density regulation and logical but not-forcing usage distribution are among those elements.
- Project’s careful level understanding of abstraction and evaluation board’s idea that such abstraction will provide conducive conditions for future discussions.

The new city looks like an organic designed city. This new art of modernism called organic design is very futuristic.I think this project is the first organic designed urban development project of the world.Such a city would look like a 22th century city.Zaha Hadid is one of the TOP 10 architects of the world. For me she is better than FOSTER and CALATRAVA.Zaha Hadid knows to use futuristic, nice,
modern and organic elements and put them all in a harmony with the environment. She is very good.

do you think that this new modernism has something to do with Istanbul or with Turkey? do this architecture represent turkey people? is Zaha Hadid or some other 'big' architect able to speak for a community?
i m just questioning, not judging.

The city is very symmetrical and i like the stars if you look from above  .Together with the project of Ken Yeang and the YENI ISTANBUL (silk hills project) the metropol will look more modern than DUBAI.It is like a science-fiction city. But Istanbul also has his historical city center.
Btw. are there other big urban development project like these in Istanbul.I only know Haydarpasa dönsüm projesi.

Kartal's urbanization project presented in NYC
Arif Dağlar, the mayor of İstanbul's rapidly developing district of Kartal, has given a presentation to a number of mayors and city planners from around the world regarding an urban transformation project under way in his district, at UN headquarters in New York.
At the Forum on Sustainable Urbanization in the Information Age, organized by UN-Habitat and UNDESA-ECOSOC on April 23-24, Dağlar said the urbanization efforts in his district are aimed at establishing an environment that will offer the best quality of life to locals. "Both the goal of sustainable development and sustainable urbanization is this," he said, adding that they had focused on how to create a space where people can live in harmony with their environment and have easy access to public transportation. The Kartal urbanization project presents a new city plan based on geometric shapes with a wide network of rail and land transportation.

I'm divided about this project... on one hand I really like Zaha Hadid's work and it's a shame that she rarely gets anything commissioned. On the other hand, I just look at this project and ask myself 'why?' :sly: People are too easily seduced by pretty architecture, but it doesn't make sense to spend billions of dollars for such a large scale project that seems to focus largely on aesthetics.

I can confirm that the "Kartal District Development" is not a mere concept but rather an authorised and well financed project which is also well under way. The plans for the individual buildings which will make up this very urban environment are in fact being drafted as I speak.
It is also envisaged that the area covering the Kartal Masterplan will be gradually expanded in order to encompass a majority of Anatolian Istanbul. (But this expansion will be done gradually over a period of 20 to 30 years). Once, this is complete Anatolian Istanbul will exceed European Istanbul in terms of appearence and functionality.
This project will be a world first in many respects:
(1) It will be the world's first fully "green city" (Green power, extensive recycling, Natural ventilation through the extensive use of man-made lakes and ponds, Supported by UN-Habitat and UNDESA-ECOSOC).
(2) It will be the world's first futuristic city.
(3) It will be the world's first glass city (as all the buildings will have glass facades).
It is also very certain that Kartal will be Europe's most advanced and Modern urban environment in 2012.
ISTANBUL WILL ONCE AGAIN RECEIVE THE ATTENTION IT ONCE RECEIVED

On paper, it looks really cool. I wonder if it is practical at all. In the areas where there is a concentration of tall buildings, does it address issues of solar access and lighting? Is it energy efficient?]
Are there any provisions for a social diversity mix (ie. various socioeconomic classes) or will it be an exclusively gentrified area where only the wealthy can afford to live there while the common Turkish man and woman is pushed to the outskirts once more?
