Luanda

A five-star hotel with 300 rooms and 70 suites is being built in Luanda since May this year by a consortium involving Angolan and Portuguese businesses, Angop learned here.

The consortium has invested USD 470 million in the project that is intended to offer about 6,500 jobs as from 2009.

Planned to be built at the site of the Ex-Comandante Gika military academy, at Alvalade suburb, the project is to occupy an area of 300,000 square metres, and is sought to be one of the most modern hotels in Africa.

A source with Edifer Construction/Angola, one of the firms involved in the works, said the works of construction of the hotel are going smoothly and are expected finished next year.

According to the source, in addition to the hotel the consortium builds a three storey mall with 280 shops, a hypermarket, ten cinemas, restaurants and a parking for 1,581 vehicles.

The business consortium is also building two 21-floor offices buildings, a business centre and a parking for 470 vehicles.

The construction of another two residential towers with 22 floors and 136 apartments each is also part of the plans of the group.

PS: However, the five-star hotel seems to be a new addition to the project!

Thanks Mosi for the link!

Here is another link with more photos attached, you have to skim through it. (photos were taken while the foundation stone was laid). Hopefully the link will work!

PS: Hammelkar or someone else, do you think that this will be the final name for this project, it has a military flavour to it, a more "joyful" name would automatically spark off lighter emotions for such a nice project..

It appears from the sign that it will be called Luanda Shopping. I agree the name Subcomandante Gika sounds too political and may give the impression that an MPLA commander is behind the project as it is well known that Angola's military has substantial business interests and important stakes in the economy.

Ciao ragazzi. Look guys, i think the name is due to the big avenue that links to the place, wich is called: Avenida Comandante Gika. And to be honest with you ppl, i just love the name Off corse the name is also a political junction but not bad for the place.
