Favourite Supertall Project

Listed here are the tallest skyscraper projects in the world right now, in order of height (starting at 450m). Vote for your favourite. It's multiple choice, so you can vote for more than one. A few projects have been excluded until we have more info on them (e.g. Al Burj, and the mile high tower in Jeddah).

Please try to avoid voting for a building just because it's in your own city/country. Also, try to avoid voting purely on the basis of height. Choose the project you genuinely feel has the best design and will have the greatest impact in the world of architecture.

This sucks, I can't add more than 15 options. I'll have to get one of the Admins to fix this...

November 9th, 2007, 09:35 AM
Well, given the option, I vote World Financial Centre - Shanghai. A thing of beauty, not over-designed to intricate oblivion or shamelessly tacky like most of the others here. Fan-tas-tic building.

The Burj Al Aram looks cool as a single tower, but i think the Freedom Tower in NYC fit's in best with everything around it.

the constelattion is the most futuristic design i have ever seen in my livetime, its the thing dubai shuold build as the WTC landmark tower absulute great. Who is the architect?

wjfox
November 19th, 2007, 04:59 PM
My choices:

Burj Dubai - ludicrous height... the world's first hypertall, an incredible feat of engineering.

Chicago Spire - beautiful design, will give a really "fresh" look to Chicago's skyline.

Sumida Tower - Tokyo lacks world famous landmarks. This will certainly become famous!

Solar Tower - very futuristic concept. I love the idea of generating so much clean energy from a structure like this.

Lotte Super Tower - very nice facade, will look especially good at night when it's lit up.

Freedom Tower (1WTC) - okay, so the name is a little tacky. But the tower itself is a worthy replacement, bold and soaring, and has evolved nicely from the earlier proposals. The neighbouring towers (by some of the world's top architects) will compliment it really well.

Burj Al Alam - exceptionally good design, I love the curves and organic feel it has, especially towards the crown/pinnacle. It's probably the best skyscraper design to come out of the Middle East in my opinion.

World Financial Center - a sleek, soaring and futuristic tower, perfect for Shanghai.

International Commerce Center - compliments the IFC extremely well. I love how the 2 towers form a gateway into the harbour.

Anyway, a lot of these projects are nice (and I voted for those) but that doesn't mean the same one will become supertall legends.

Fair enough.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm sticking with my 1 vote for Burj Dubai, the most exciting, ground-breaking, beautiful project of this century for me. And that's with all respect to the wonderful city of Shanghai.

I chose:

Burj Dubai
Freedom Tower
SWFC
ICC

The reason for this is because i think that 50% of those towers will not get built. Some of them seem a bit to mad. Also these towers i have picked are actually under construction and look fantastic.

Why poll includes Manila's tower? Is it skyscraper?

Done. :)

I selected the BD for obvious reasons. The building's design is stunning, groundbreaking and already in existence. Oh, and it's utterly smashing all World's Tallest records to boot.

The Burj al Aram and Chicago Spire are tied for runner up. Both towers will be utterly stunning once complete, and will be a must see for any skyscraper enthusiast with the means to do so.

b/c I don't particularly like boxy towers, BD is "pop-scraper" anyway, and many other listed projects might never happen.

The new skyscraper "legends" I think will be:
Burj Dubai
Russia Tower
Chicago Spire
ICC
SWFC
Freedom Tower

Maybe I should have voted for those but I didn't really think when I actually picked the towers

What I did vote for (for various reasons)

Burj Dubai
Russia Tower
Chicago Spire
Lotte World Tower
ICC
Damac Heights

Some of these are proposed, so my favorite proposed tower Al Burj!!!

Towers already being built: I choose

Burj Dubai - definately will be a classic
Chicago Spire - Exceptional
Russia Tower - Best three wings implementation ever.
Some of them are downright hokey, though. I will not state which ones!!!

My votes:
Burj Dubai-Doesn't need any explanation. Its not only tall, but it also has a nice design, altho i have to say its height isa major factor.

Sumida-Tokyo I feel lacks any defining tower, not anymore.

Jingling Fuguang - Nanjing-That's one crazy design

Burj Al Alam - Dubai-I love the design & although this & Guangzhou Television Tower are similar but the latter is too narrow for my liking.

I don't think "The Constellation - The Middle East" will ever rise up.

The design looks unconventional. Its just one pipe like glassy object supported by steel or something on the top.

I think the lower part of the towers is well good, but won't the top part look too skinny.

1. Russia Tower. Will be a new heart of a city. And glass pyramids are cool.
2. Burj Dubai. Deserves to be called "the tallest building in the world" way more than Taipei 101, imho. A bold statement with a needle.

It was extremely tough call. Any tower from this list would get at least 11 out of 10 from me when it's completed. Anyway I've chosen Pentominium - Dubai :okay:.

My favourites are ....

1. The Chicago Spire

The footprint to height ratio is crazy and the construction is being covered magnificently. The insanity of this tower makes it no. 1.

2. WTC 1 and complex

All that building on one spot means plenty of interest. Given the added history and location this makes for one intriguing project.

3. Waterview Tower

This slender tower is very interesting in terms of layout and looks, plus the construction seems to be very quick. Will it beat Trump tower?

4. Trump Tower in Chicago

The tower shape is quite plain, even though the glass clading is high quality. The interiors should be of greater interest.

LEAST FAVOURITE PROJECTS

1. Burj Dubai

Overrated and an eyesore. This tower is arrogant, forcefully prominent. Lair of the arrogant rich. Product of the exploited poor. Impratical and the sustaining of this building will be a drain on resources. Extremely wasteful and proud.

2. Shanghai World Finance Centre

Initially interesting this project hasn't matched what was anticipated. It looks incredibly boring. The Jin Mao overshadows the SWFC not in height but clearly in looks. As for the proposed Shanghai Centre buildings - they are so beautiful compared to the SWFC, that this building looks postively ugly.

Please note that this post wasn't meant to be tactful, but truthful.

Nothing beats old beautiful at-deco style Chrysler Building and ESB in NY. That ones aren't the highest but still breathtaking.

I vote for International Commerce Center - Hong Kong. For it's simplicity and majesty. It will still be beautifull in 100 years.
I'd go to Hong Kong just to see this one.

Freedom Tower is my number one choice!

Incheon Towers are my runners up! I prefer clear and classic forms instead of organic or curvy ones!

Millennium Tower Busan is also good, third place!

Oryx Tower looks like some Spongebob Character what made me choosing this one too :D

1. Burj Dubai
2. Russia Tower

I did't choose 3place, as IMO such towers like Spire, World Financial Center, Burj Al Alam, Las Vegas Crown, International Commerce Center are equally good.
