They should build some touristic place in downtown or start some sort of program in order to encourage Calgarians to actually use their downtown. After 5-6 PM there is not a single soul walking the streets in downtown area...

Calgarian's do use the downtown; however, they use it as a place to work. no city has a city center that is used for play at all times in all places. Calgary dose have some really nice districts for that and they are used very much. the pictures you see here are misleading; furthermore, everyone is at work.

Last year I was in Toronto, (i'm Argentinian) and I felt in love with that city, so much as I wanna live in that city, actually in any canadian city, and Calgary is one of the most beatiful for me, and the one who I was funding and dreaming with live in it. I haven't been down to Calgary in a few months, and even then it was just to pass through the city to go to Canmore. I'm hoping to get back down there before Christmas and take a better look around. What a vibrant city! It's incredible just how different Calgary is from Edmonton and they are only 2 1/2 hours apart by driving.

I also read that nights are always cold in calgary and even in summer the temperature goes down to 8C at night

Yes, in Alberta the summers are relatively dry so the temperature shoots up and then down for the day and night, respectively.

sometimes we never have snow all year long, like 1999, no snow all year long however it did snow after y2k 2 am

Most street in downtown calgary are 5 lane wide most of the streets shown are park like streets that are only used for walking/shopping. for the comment about barron street calgary (I Belive) has that Calgary has the most Elevated walkway ( plus 15's ) that are inclosed in the world, so you don't have to walk out side when it's cold. ( if im wrong i would be amazed ) You can allmost walk inside from east to west downtown ( 14 blocks ) inside. As for the snow comment we allso get chinnoks in the middle of winter that in one day can change the temp from -20 to +20c

^^ Yes, I think Calgary is the only city in the world has such an extensive skywalk system throughout the whole downtown area. Edmonton, Winnipeg, Regina and Minneapolis have a few but none can come close to Calgary's.

you can see the glass elevators in bromley square photo (#5).. they are Calgary's highest glass elevators at 32 floors.

Wow, Calgary is growing so fast, and all those tall office buildings make it looks so much bigger than it actually is. But I can see in the near future Calgary will over take Vancouver and may be even Montreal to become the second largest city in Canada.

I suppose he is right. I myself, for one, do find this city kind of becoming the new big fun hub for many newbe's in Canada, like myself.

I personally love and admire Toronto for being just like NYC, but when I compare the other two cities I like, Calgary and Vancouver with each other, somehow, I tend to do research on Calgary rather than Vancouver. They both have much in common, but Calgary has a much more fun skyline and less boring and I hope that when it comes to shopping and/or outdoor activities, it can also answer to everybody's desire, even one like me. :lol:

Anyway, I like Calgary too.

Sure I do. I ll be in the big fun lovely thrilling dazzling Toronto soon again but also going to visit CGL for the first time and see the city for myself.
Somehow I like CGL a lot and feel at ease with it's lay-out, culture, mindset and off course skyline and city itself.
It is a compact size city but with all the comforts of modern life provided. Just like Ottawa but in an other concept.
I also will visit Vancouver but doubt if I would choose to settle there at the end.
Somehow deep in my heart I don't feel the much needed and necessary vibe for living and be happy in Vancouver than in Toronto or Calgary.
I am obsessed with real skyscrapers huh?!

Calgary Downrtown from Prince's island

One of the real treasures in Calgary is Princes island located in the middle of the Bow river only 6 blocks from downtown. A number of apartments are along a pathway along the river. This is the view from a park bench on Prince's island. A very popular spot in Calgary. The buildings look much less oppressive

I just moved here from the small town of Duncan, BC. (Vancouver Island). Have visited Calgary on numerous occasions and fell in love. Been to Vancouver tons, as it's only an hour ferry trip away...great place. But nothing like Calgary. Some call me crazy. But this city just flat out rocks.

These were taken yesterday on a fairly sunny day downtown and around Eau Claire. Tried to take the shots to emphasize the sheer size of the buildings downtown. It was fun playing with the different perspectives to get a good effect. Ultimately, I'll let you guys decide what you think of these. Enjoy.

Just visited Calgary this week and other than the -30 temps, I loved it. It's a lovely city and the people are super friendly!
