When I went to New York, we didn't make to Buffalo, now I kind of wish that I made it there becuz it's a great size for a population of it's size. New York City puts to shame though. :)

Buffalo may be lacking in many areas... especially new skyscrapers... and it's lone 500 footer may be an extremely ugly box... but it's pre-WW2 architecture is simply unparalelled... It's City Hall is the best city hall building in the world... extremely awesome... and unique masterpieces like the Electric Building, Rand and Liberty all help give Buffalo a unique character. It's skyline is mighty, grand and beautiful.

Well, hardly....but since it's all they have, the few examples it does have stand out more than other cities where they are lost within a much larger skyline.
I will agree with you on the city hall though...it's pretty damn gorgeous.
It's too bad Buffalo hasn't added much in a long time, and it doesn't look like it will be adding much in the near future either.
"Buffalo is the cancer of lake ontario."

Regarding KGB's comment, "It's too bad Buffalo hasn't added much in a long time, and it doesn't look like it will be adding much in the near future either," it looks like KGB has not done his research. Buffalo is currently adding to their skyline "The Niagara Center," which may not be as tall as buildings in the pre-9/11 era, but it isn't a bad design for a building whose purpose is to house mostly federal offices. They seem to be more focussed on preserving and restoring their classics, the most recent project on the table being the HH Richardson complex near Buffalo State University. Also the Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and the Louis Sullivan skyscrapers are superb. And did I mention the waterfront, particularly the outer harbour is finally being developed with beaches and pathways? Magnificent!

To the untrained eye, I can see how the Buff's skyline may not be as appealing as a place like Dallas with all the new shiney glass buildings. But the trained eye, Buffalo has something every other city in North America outside of NYC and Chicgao doesn't have - architecture (according to the NY Times). Buffalonians take pride in the brilliant architecture that blessed our city from the 1890s through the 1950s. The current skyline has pretty good density and has an pretty good imposing feel when you approach from the 33 South or the 190 North/South. Rochester is a great town but I hear all these people from there saying their skyline is larger and denser than Buffalo's. Buffalo has 70 total skyscrapers downtown 5 of which are over 100 meters, Rochester has 51 total with 4 over 100 meters...and our HSBC building towers over Rochester's biggest building by 30 meters. So Rochester people, you are right there is no comparison...don't compare Rochester to Buffalo. That is like comparing the Amerks to the Sabres.

how can people give Buffalo 8's 9's and 10's and say it has a nice skyline
and give Vancouver 5's ane 6's because it lacks height, when Vancover is surrounded by mountains and the ocean, and hundreds more buildings.
Buffalo's skyline is crap no densitry or height, just a few randomn buildings
and its the flattest city in the world.
And Buffalo doesn't have nice skyline for it's size. Niagara Falls has 80 000 people and it's skyline looks way more planned and dence than Buffalos

You Canadians crack me up with the constant inferiority complex exhibited on these forums. The thread is about Buffalo not Vancouver. Mention of Niagara Falls is legitimate though since it is in the Buffalo Metro area.
Van obviously has a good skyline. The bad marks are probably coming from the Toronto crowd since you guys are always at each other's throats.

7.0/10 -- Let's face it, the height, density, and number of buildings are not present in Buffalo's skyline. But its architectural diversity is profound--it cannot be ignored. Wow, I really love some of those buildings! The City Hall and Rand Building are art-deco jems.

Keep in mind that of course Niagara Falls (ONT especially) is going to cluster up with HOTELS because of the VIEW. No different than say, Miami Beach, Ocean City, or Myrtle Beach. Not to mention the total lack of character or soul in the buildings. Ever get a look at that Minolta Tower? Talk about buildings that need rapid implosion! Trying to compare NF to BUF is like saying that the view of the great Lake Erie sunsets should mean that Buffalo should have corporate high-rises dotting the lakefront. Face it, they are essentially two totally separate cities, with high-rise development brought on by totally separate causes. You're trying to compare water to steel or grain, literally!

I happen to think Buffalo is a city of exemplary architecture, with a compact downtown, great streetscapes, and a decent amount of hustle and bustle--but it needs to be seriously updated. It looks as though it hasn't changed much in the last 20 years, and the slapped together 70's buildings have pretty much outgrown their architectural usefulness--although the same could be said about all of the other Upstate cities as well.
I give it a 6/10.

I wanna explain buffalo's downtown layout vs. places like Cleveland, Rochester, pittsburgh or Detroit. Those places compact all the buildings in an area or "cluster" of less than 3/4 of a mile square - for the most part. In Buffalo the Main highrise developement starts about 1 and 1/10 mile from the foot of main at the harbor...but the downtown does not cluster...it is linear...so looking at it makes it look under developed...which it's not.
If Detroit was laid out the same way...the city would expand outside the confines of the sorrounding expressway and give a much weaker look.
Buffalo has only developed this way because the City was once centered around the waterfront with Main Street leading north.

Let's get some pics of it when It's buried under 6 feet of snow!
That's a myth, That happened once in winter 2000-2001, it's ANNUAL snowfall is about 6 feet, that doesn't mean that there is 6 feet of snow on the ground at any given time, that means that total accumulation over the whole winter is 90 inches, but there is always a melthing period between major snows, so the total on the ground isn't usually more than 2 feet. By the way, love the city, skyline is ok, so that averages out to about a 7.5

i've lived around and in buffalo for most of my life, and i can say that i'm sensitive to criticism of it due to the fact that a lot of locals are proud of this city. the suburban flight and dislocation of it's businesses and population are only a reflection of the poor decisions made by the local government. even in the northeast, a city shouldn't decline by over 50% in 50 years. in the early 1900s, this was a city to be marveled at; the first major city to share electric power with another, and the second largest in the state to this day.
there is so much untapped potential here that it makes that cliche painstakingly true. i'm glad there are renovations and new buildings under construction and in planning.

I'm from Buffalo and, for the size of the city, it has a nice skyline. It has some very impressive older buildings (city hall is exhibit A) and it gained some large modern buildings in the 70's. It was largely left behind in the late 80's and 90's when many other American cities boomed and gained big skylines. It has recently seen some impressive mid-rise buildings go up and some nice renovations of existing buildings have happened. Because of the lack of truly modern buildings, the skyline is realistically a 5.5 or 6 at best. The good news is that there are some nice things planned or underway and the skyline is getting better.
