HOUSTON - At a press conference Wednesday, the Texas Medical Center forecasted the largest expansion in the 60-year history of the medical complex.
The center, which is already the largest medical facility in the world, reports it is experiencing a large construction boom that will create 30,000 new jobs over the next seven years.
John Kajander, Senior Vice President of the Texas Medical Center, noted the expansion will bring an increase of "high-quality jobs."
"At any given time there's 3,000 open positions here in the medical center. One of the nice things about this is it's not only job growth for 30,000 people, it's also high-paying jobs, quality jobs that provide full benefits," said Kajander.
Currently 73,000 employees work in the Texas Medical Center. By 2014, the facility is expected to cover about 40 million acres, an increase of 22 million acres from its current size.
New facilities will include hospitals, clinics, research facilities, and office space.
The press release says the expansion will create a "Texas Medical Center business district" that will be comparable to the top ten business districts in the United States.
Census projections show that the population of Harris County and surrounding areas will increase by two million people over the next two decades. The Medical Center says it is investing more than $7 billion as part of the expansion to help keep pace with the population's needs.
