Post here data, photos, articles or personal impressions on Eastern European* universities. Since most countries in the region lack top notch universities, a discussion and exchange of data would be interesting in my opinion.
*Just to make things clear, I'm going by the UN geographical definition for EE (Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Rep., Hungary, Poland, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Slovakia and Ukraine), but feel free to extend it by including countries from Slovenia down to Greece and up to Istanbul at most.
I'll begin by presenting my university.
The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies - Academia de Studii Economice din Bucureşti (ASE)
http://www.imagehost.ro/pict/27124248474bf4a8bfb3b.gif
The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies is the oldest and most prestigious university of economics and business studies in Romania. It was founded in 1913 in Bucharest, under the name Academy of High Commercial and Industrial Studies. Since 1967 it is known as the Academy of Economic Studies and has become the largest higher education institute in Romania and one of the largest in South-Eastern Europe.
It is one of the most popular universities in Romania, with a number of around 34,000 new applications each year (9% admission rate for State paid seats and 11% admission for fee-paid seats). Alongside the faculties in Bucharest, a number of Territorial Centers (Centre teritoriale) function in other cities: Alexandria, Brăila, Buzău, Covasna, Câmpia Turzii, Curtea de Argeş, Deva, Ialomiţa, Mediaş, Piatra Neamţ, Slatina, Târgovişte, Tulcea and Vaslui.
A notable presence inside ASE is the Business Information Technology department (Informatică Economică) which is an entity that promotes an educational philosophy based on combining economics and software development as a way of creating experts suitable for the Information Age.

St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo was established as a higher institute of education in 1963. In its first academic year of 1963-64, the University welcomed 300 students, who enrolled in four programmes: Bulgarian Studies, Russian Studies, History, and Fine Arts. The first two faculties, the Faculty of Modern Languages and the Faculty of History and Fine Arts, were established in 1968. In 1971 the Institute became the first full-fledged Bulgarian University outside the country’s present capital.
At present the University of Veliko Turnovo is a major Bulgarian institution of higher learning specialising in a wide range of fully accredited degree programmes in the humanities, education, economics, business and management, and computer science. Having inherited the legacy of the medieval Literary School of Veliko Turnovo on the hill Sveta Gora, it has an established reputation as a national and international centre for study and research.
The Main Building of the University is located on the historic hill Sveta Gora, overlooking the river Yantra and the medieval fortress of Tsarevets. It houses a number of reading rooms, resource centres, language labs, lecture halls, and seminar rooms. The Central Library of the University of Veliko Turnovo is opposite the Main Building. There are two students’ halls of residence within walking distance as well as a cafeteria and a covered Sports Centre. Students can join a number of reading and debating societies on drama, translation and other circles. In their leisure time, they can also make full use of the University’s facilities for sports and organized tourism. Students can ward off stress by swimming for recreation or through weight lifting and rock climbing. They can also play tennis, volleyball, and basketball.
The total number of all students for the current academic year is over 10 000. The University offers BA and MA degrees in about 64 fields of study. It also provides instruction for a growing number of PhD students. It currently employs over 500 lecturing staff; the number of fully tenured associate and full professors is 234. In addition, there are visiting lecturers from a wide variety of countries.
Over the last seven or eight years, the University has been attracting a growing number of students from all over the world. Instruction is currently being provided for over 300 international BA, MA and PhD students.

PRESTIGE
The Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi is the oldest higher education institution in Romania. Since 1860, the university has been carrying on a tradition of excellency and innovation in the fields of education and research. With over 36.000 students and 900 academic staff, the university enjoys high prestige at national and international level and cooperates with over 180 universities world-wide. Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is a member of some of the most important university networks and associations: EUA - European University Association, Utrecht Network, International Association of Universities, University Agency of Francophony and the Alexandru Ioan Cuza Network of Francophone Universities (RUFAC). Our partnerships offer the opportunity of experience exchanges, student and teacher mobility and of joint academic, research or strategy initiatives.
INNOVATION
The Alexandru Ioan Cuza University became the first student-centered university in Romania, once the Bologna Process was put into practice. We believe in the power of individual choice and customized education. Thus, we became the only university to give our students the opportunity to pick both a major and a minor field of study, in a combination at their choice, that best suits their career goals.
EXCELLENCE
Research at our university is top level. For the second year in a row, the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is placed first in the national research ranking compiled on the basis of Shanghai criteria. Our teachers are involved in over 200 national and international research projects, with the logistic support of 26 research centres. Striving for excellence, the university takes unique initiatives to stimulate research quality, to encourage dynamic and creative education and to attract the best students to academic life.

The University of Bucharest has a number of buildings throughout Bucharest, so in that respect it does not have a single campus. Its two main buildings are:
The Old Building, in the University Square (practically right in the center of the city), housing the Faculties of Mathematics and Computer Science, History, Chemistry, Geography, and Literature.
The Kogălniceanu Building, near the Opera House, housing the Administrative section and the Faculty of Law.
Other faculties have their own buildings and research facilities, scattered throughout the city, such as:
The Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Languages, on Pitar Moş street.
The Faculty of Physics, in the small town of Măgurele, situated 16 km (10 miles) south of Bucharest.
The Faculty of Political Science, on Sfântu Ştefan street.
This, mixed with the fact that student dormitories and other facilities are located in very different locations, prompted the University to print a yearly guide for freshmen.

this is a widespread EE myth. Indeed our universities have good theoretical lecturing, but IMO (at least the Macedonian ones) don't produce "finished" professionals U have to invest a bit more in training to make them fully functional. In other words the MK universities don't follow the needs of the labour market. The description of joce23 is also good for our universities.

one of them is state university the other one is private but has an university status. AFAIK the rest of the private insitution are colleges regarldess of their pretentious names.
whatever... November 27th, 2007, 03:39 PM According to that ranking, Vilnius University is 256th and Kaunas University of Technology is 310th. I must add to the claims that the ranking is stupid, since there are atleast two institutions of highier education in Lithuania that are considered here of beeing better, but are not even included onto that list - that is, Vilnius Gediminas Technical university or Vytautas the Great university in Kaunas.
Anyway, after the current ongoing reforms in education sector, our universities sha'll return to the place they were 15+ years ago - Top100 atleast.

Vilnius university is one of the oldest institutions of highier education in all of Eastern/Northern Europe. Established as Jesuit academy in 1570, it was granted university rights, rights of beeing equall to Jagiellon university in Krakow, by king of Poland and Grand duke of Lithuania Stefan Batory on April the 1st in 1579, as a gratitute to lithuanian noblemen, of beeing granted title of Grand duke instead of Maximillian the 2nd from Holly Roman Empire. Pope Gregory 13th's bull approved it on 30th of October that same year.

I heard that's one of the top faculties in this field. On par with other faculties and departments of American universities. That would be the Russian homologous of my faculty, CSIE.
Don't get too pumped up on those rankings just because you feel some university in your country should or should not be there or it should be higher/lower in the ranking. Because:
a) there are different rankings, and each looks at these universities from different perspectives when calculating their rank
b) you're probably wrong anyway.
Two more ranking systems: THES (http://www.topuniversities.com/worlduniversityrankings/results/2007/overall_rankings/top_400_universities/) & ARWU (http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2007/ARWU2007_Top100.htm).

Cosmin December 17th, 2007, 01:21 PM EU capitals start bidding for European technology institute
With the European Union next year set to launch its Institute of Innovation and Technology, some EU capitals have already started their bids to house the institute.
Austria, Hungary and Poland have said they would like to host the new European body, which is being promoted in Brussels as a
flagship project to boost innovation, research and higher education.
"The fact that several countries have expressed their interest in hosting the institute proves that it is an interesting project", EU education commissioner Jan Figel said on Tuesday (11 December), stressing that "Europe's future lies in world-class innovations".
Brussels believes the European Institution of Innovation and Technology (EIT) could help attract bright young brains as well as bridge the innovation gap between the 27-nation bloc and its major rivals, the US and Japan.
In practice, the EIT is expected to result in partnerships of universities, research organisations and companies.
In 2006, the union invested 1.85 percent of GDP into research and development, far from its 2010 goal of three percent. By contrast, the US spends around 2.7 percent.
"Some topics are so complex that individual member states are not capable to resolve them on their own", Mr Figel said, referring to climate change, renewable energy and the next generation of information and communication technologies.
There are no specific requirements related to where the ETI should be based, although European lawmakers have suggested the body is located "near existing centres of European excellence and academic reputation".
According to Polish socialist Adam Gierek, Poland's Wroclaw city would fit such requirements.
Hungarian socialist MEP Edit Herczog, for her part, argued that Hungary is "quite a leader in the area of research and development" when compared to the other countries that joined the EU bloc in 2004.
Austria would be good for scientific networking, as the country borders four new EU states as well as Germany, Switzerland and Lichtenstein, Austrian conservative Paul Ruebig said.
However, according to some MEPs, where the institute is situated is not so important.
"We don't want a new bureaucracy", said Jan Hudacky from the parliament's committee on industry, research and energy, adding that "it should rather be a virtual organisation coordinating and encouraging those stakeholders, who take part in the innovation partnerships".
The Slovak conservative MEP has also voiced some scepticism about the extent to which some member states, especially the new ones, will be able to participate, as the main idea behind the EIT is to pull together those most excellent centres and universities.
"I think countries which don't have research and development centres or top universities will have problems becoming part of the partnerships", he said.
Under the agreed rules, three different organisations from at least two member states should participate in one of the EIT projects, selected by the institute governing board responsible for steering the its activities.
The institute will operate with a total budget of €2.4 billion from 2008-2013, with €308.7 million coming from EU coffers.
But the bulk of the investments are supposed to come from public and private partners as well as from the institute's own activities.

I don't for Romania but in Greece there are no private universities at all :D only some funny colleges...
The government has tried desperately to change the laws and allow the creation of private universities but it has failed till now due to the strong social resistance and from what I hear private universities are actually moneydraining-factories...at least for the small countries.
