i want to rate it higher considering it's an african skyline. however that would be unfair to other cities such as north american ones that have better skylines compared to this one but rated lower cos they are in north america.

but it's not that bad. nice boxes. and looks cool. 5.5/10

could be the more populous metropolis of the world some day.

4/10 First of all has anyone taken a recent photograph of this city. Maybe that would help get it a higher score. It seems like the pics that were available were pulled out of somebody's 30 year old scrapbook. Based on what I see I am very unimpressed, especially since this is the largest city in Africa, in terms of population in the metro area.

the problem is that all those skyscrapers u see around the world have nothing to do with "how beautiful we want to make the city", its ALL based on INVESTMENT: multinational business from other countries decide to designate branches of theirs in a country: and if the business is large enough, they build scrapers to accomodate their business scope. the problem with Africa plain and simple is that no one wants to invest there. plus, african governments are too financially weak to even consider building business parks or designate commercial districts for business before its main priority of feeding, providing security and trying its best to look after its citizens: thats the point of a government. anyway, i dont see what all the hubbub is: some cities attract investors because of position (Southeast Asian Cities, China, South America) others because of prestige (American cities, Japan, Korea, Europe).. Africa can't share in this because of old and i dare say racist prejudices of the peoples living there and the political situations in the countries.

for instance, Botswana has a HIGHER GDP than many Southeast Asian nations ($8,600), for instance (forgive me for naming you): Thailand ($6000)and the Philippines ($4000). but, botswana's capital Gaborone hardly has any scrapers, whereas Bangkok and Manila have truckloads. SO you see its mostly all to do with whether businesses are willing to set up in a country or not, and what drives businesses many times are prejudice: "Asia: Asian Tiger Economies, developing economies, Weird Culture, Japan, Phuket, etc" and then ocmes the typical images of Africa "Africa= Safaris, tribal wars, uncivilised, Somalia, Ethiopia, Deserts, AIDs".. you see?.. prejudice :) even in the business world!

so if you want to blame someone, i suggest you should point the fingers at those multinationals for being so choosy on where to set up.. at the risk of a few scrapers in your own capitals not being built. lol

But out of the African countries, Nigeria does recieve more investment than others. It has vast oil fields, a big population, tropical land (instead of deserts), coastal location for trade, British influence, etc...

I disagree with most of you. My company does contract work in Lagos and some other Nigerian cities. The pictures posted above hardly give credit to the Lagos skyline and depict only a small portion of the Lagos metropolitan area.
Some stats that might help you decide what to rate the above.
-Nigeria is the 10th most populous nation in the world.
-It is the world'd 5th largest producers of crude oil/petroluem
Nigeria is also not as poor as some of you wrongfully noted, if those guys cough for a day in producing crude oil, our gas prices rise 35 cents a gallon right here in Southern California.
Check some other Nigerian city skylines out, when you get a chance; example: Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt etc..

clive330
November 19th, 2004, 01:42 AM
But Nigeria's GDP/C (at PPP) is only $849 which makes it very poor with personal incomes less than 10% of the richer African economies. Its national economy (with 135m people) is smaller than that of the African city of Johannesburg.

hey, forumers !!!
Dont forget Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa (+ 100 million)
It has the biggest oil resources among the African countries (National Geographic magazine 2004)
Other African oil riches such as Libya and Algeria look wealthier because of their quite small population (few millions only).

IMO, its quite depressing to see that Nigeria, the African "BIG-FAT" nation only has a capital with less density in skyscrapers

It appears I voted 6.5 sometime ago...Is a huge city, that goes without saying and the skyline is of course small for its size...derrr. However, there is a huge collection of midrisers in Lagos, if the government manages to behave itself, this will develop into a far larger and taller skyline in the decades to come.

i used to work on a team that supervised the importations of Nigeria, then after 3 years, there were some changes that our scope was limited to Murtala Muhammed Airport, Onne Seaport and Port Harcourt Airport including a subcon of all its land shipments via Seme Border. so i have some sort of attachment with this country. it needs more development, then hopefully more local resources will be used to fund the nation's infrastracture projects. this country has a potential because of its rich resources! :)

the story of pipeline accidents in suburbs makes me sad about the locals. :( do we have any Nigeria forumer here? Sorry for my ignorance. Wish you all the best.

You're probably refering to the explosion that occured a couple of months ago, yeah it was quite tragic:ohno: :ohno: . Well on the bright side the FG are installing new rader systems to cover all the Refineries and pipelines. The Fg are becoming more meticulous on issues such as Oil exportation and Gas Flaring etc. As for developments, there are a couple of nice projects see; The West African *Development Fact File* (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=368540&page=21)

The whole skyline is being rejuvenated and roads are being revamped and new ones are also planned. Also an indonesian company as expressed interests in constructing office and resiedntial towers in the City :cheers2:

For the population base it's rather small, however, when you take into account all the negligence that Nigeria has suffered from with its chequered history and despotic and corrupt rulers you begin to appreciate just how monumental the skyline really is.

Lagos isn't as bad as some people are trying to make it out to be. Sure it has slums but most people don't live in them and it has a very large and fast growing middle class.

Nigeria has one the fastest growing economies in the world. The non-Oil sector has been growing at about 10% a year for quite a while now.

here are some random pics from the Lagos thread in the Africa section of SSC. If you want to see the real Lgos visit this thread http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=515151.

News Like this from South Africa makes me sick

Crocodile crossing for SA pupils
By Alice Lander
BBC News, Kwazulu-Natal

Thursday, 27 March 2008, 10:14 GMT

A South African village is demanding that a bridge be built across a crocodile-infested river to stop children swimming it to get to school.
Students as young as seven have been making the crossing for two months since the community's boat was stolen.

"There are about 70 households on that side of the river but there are no buses and no-one owns a car," a Kwazulu-Natal local councillor said.

To cross safely would require a 20km (12 miles) detour to get to the school.

I worry all the time. There are dangerous animals in there, especially crocodiles,
Headmistress Hlengiwe Mthembu

On school days, 150 children from Sahlumbe village in the heart of rural Zululand swim across the river in their underwear using rubber tyres and buckets to keep afloat and to keep their school uniforms and books dry.

The older ones help the small ones who cling to the tyres.

"I worry all the time. There are dangerous animals in there, especially crocodiles," says Thuthukani Primary School headmistress Hlengiwe Mthembu.

The children, some of whom also attend Mabizela High School, often arrive tired and unable to concentrate, she says.

"They sit in class and shiver because of the cold and they can't study well because they are worrying about how they are going to get home.

"It is very hard for them. After heavy rains the river gets very full. It can take up to 10 minutes to cross."

Drowning

Local councillor Sibusiso Nbatha says most of the families moved to the area three years ago after being evicted from the land they were on.

He says many parents have no choice but to let their children make the dangerous crossing.

"Not all the children can swim so some ride on the tires or their parents carry them across. The river is too deep for the adults to walk across and not all of them can swim," Mr Nbatha says.

It is not only children who have to face the fast-flowing Tugela River.

The only hospital in the area is also situated on the far bank. In 2003 a pregnant woman battling to reach the opposite bank drowned.

It's very frustrating. You can see the school from the opposite bank but you just can't reach it
Local councillor Sibusiso Nbatha

In 2005, two children from the same family were also taken by the river and drowned.

Mr Nbatha says even the stolen boat was not safe and he wants a bridge built in the area.

"It was old and full of holes. There was only one boat and it was used by the whole community."

He says he has pleaded with the department of transport for five years.

"They just keep us waiting," he says.

"It's very frustrating. You can see the school from the opposite bank but you just can't reach it

7 Impressive...hopefully with the political stability and growing oil sector, Nigeria can improve more on its CBD - 30-60 story scrapers are in order for a nation of over 100 million - Nigeria could be the China of Africa and/or the banking/financial hub of central Africa!! :)

More is being built...it Should look slightly better in the a year or two. BTW that is not the original skyline...that is a fairly new one.

The original Skyline is the one in the background if you strain yoru eyes.

For a city this size its a really poor skyline. Especially since its a developing city where highrises and skyscrapers are much easier to construct than in developed country.

no real skyline? Are you kidding me? I guess that could apply to majority of other African cities then too? Because Lagos surely has a skyline(s). I mean its skyline isn't that great, but it's growing and is definitely one of the best in West Africa. and hopefully will develop? It is developing.
