This model suggests that the facade may be the same as Wukesong Arena in beijing

baka...
^^
Elevation was copied well but the rest unfortunately much differs from the project.

webcam: http://www.2012.org.pl/images/warszawa_aktualny_1024.jpg

In July advanced construction will begin (at the moment last works at hacking piles off and heads that is laborious and "dull" work; after the appearance of the first cranes (will be 14 cranes) Alpine will start the productivity with the full structure), in July an additional party of the stadium on which photo reports will be also appear.

it's a really big stadium, and the time for the construction signed in the contract is short. more cranes = faster pace of construction.
probably 10-12 cranes would be enough, but slower.

The national stadium construction site – cranes, bicycles and bubbles

Over 1000 employees, 20 cranes, several dozen tipper trucks and diggers, 3 thousand cubic meters of concrete made per day, 2 megawatts of electricity supplied directly from a power plant and... 20 bicycles which foremen use to move about the construction site – this is the work on the National Stadium construction site in Warsaw in figures.

Seen from the observation deck that was set up several weeks ago over the construction site, the hundreds of workers working in this nearly 28 hectare large site look like ants, with the trucks going to and fro on the former stadium bottom and diggers working the pits looking like miniature toys. Work on the construction site continues round the clock - at night the site is illuminated by huge crane mounted floodlights, which make it as bright as by daylight.

The short deadline for stadium completion, only 20 months away, and the huge public interest are, according to the German engineer, Martin Metzeler, representative of the Polish-German group that coordinates the stadium construction, the two most important features that set it apart from all others he ever worked on. Among others, Metzeler built the Allianz Arena in Munich, which is considered as one of the most advanced in the world. The facility seats 66 thousand spectators, and what's interesting about it is the façade that is normally white, but during league matches special lights turn it to the club colors, blue or red depending on which of the Munich-based teams is playing.

‘The Warsaw stadium is designed to seat 55 thousand spectators. The deadline for its completion is very short, but I am optimistic, as we are experienced in such investment projects' - said Metzeler who moved with his family to Poland for the duration of stadium construction. He gets to work every day at 7 a.m. ‘First we plan the day with my co-workers: more generally and then, if possible, in more details. Later, I usually have all kinds of meetings, e.g. with the investor, the National Sports Center, talks on technical matters and many internal issues' - he told us about his day's work.

‘The whole project is divided into six segments, each consisting of two sections, and each section is like a mid-sized construction site' - explains Marcin Zaręba, project manager at the general contractor's, the consortium of Alpine - Hydrobudowa Polska S.A - PBG S.A. ‘From our part, each segment is supervised by the clerk of the works and his deputy, and from the investor's part - by construction inspectors and trade inspectors (e.g. electrical, plumbing inspectors).'

To speed up the investment project, engineers from the general contractor's technical office decided to change the system for building 10 staircases to be installed at the stadium. ‘In building the staircases, we decided to apply the sliding rather than the traditional formwork system - as planned before (formwork is the temporary mould used to shape the concrete mass)' - said Zaręba to PAP.

This is a technology used in chimney construction, consisting in pouring the concrete continuously as the formwork goes up, first by ca. 2 cm per hour, and now already at ca. 10 cm per hour. The total target staircase height will be around 40 m - one of the staircases can already be seen as it is above the level of the former crown of the Tenth Anniversary Stadium.

‘Sliding casting of staircases continues around the clock, regardless of weather conditions. This means that we will build the inner walls of each staircase in two weeks rather than 4 months' - Zaręba ensured us. ‘When driving down the Wisłostrada route by night, spare a thought for those who work there at all times' - he added.

On Thursday, concrete was cast on the first floors using the bubbledeck system. This is an interesting, novel technology where special hollow capsules are mounted in the mesh reinforcement. On top of such reinforcement you lay a concrete mix. Capsules - each 30 cm in diameter and 20 cm high - produce air-filled bubbles inside the floor. Nine ‘bubbles' can be found per one square meter of floor. This makes the floor structure much lighter as one kilogram of plastic replaces a hundred kilogram of concrete.

‘The technical office team keeps looking for ways to replace, improve and accelerate things. It's all about avoiding delays or having time to respond if anything unexpected occurs, which cannot be fully ruled out' - said the construction site's spokesperson, Karolina Szydłowska.

And unexpected situations are a daily occurrence at a construction site, as it is affected by many different factors: weather, people and equipment that may fail, possible design discrepancies. So far, there was one surprise, the tunnel leading to the former field of the Tenth Anniversary Stadium which will have the same function at the national stadium. After the foundations were unearthed, it turned out that it is not in line with the design guidelines. ‘Consequently, we have a bit more work, but I think this should not cause a delay, especially that our cooperation with the investor and design office has been perfect so far' - estimates Zaręba.

The main construction site is the seating area structure, the future field with the underlying underground garages and external facilities. Work is underway in all those areas. Most groundwork has already been completed (soon the heaps of earth that can be seen from the commuter train route will disappear - they will be used as a base for slabs on the ground) and so has foundation work, and walls and reinforced concrete pillars are being made. Temporary roads emerged around the construction site, where trucks or... people riding bikes can always be seen dashing in clouds of dust. These are not cyclists, however, but engineers and foremen from respective sections. ‘We have 20 company bicycles. This makes communication much easier as covering the whole site on foot can take over an hour. And there are people that must do such rounds 5-10 times a day' - explains the project manager.

One of a few female engineers holding a managerial position at the construction site is Lidia Kucharczyk, finishing manager. ‘The project is so interesting that men and women alike want to work here, especially those that wish to extend their work experience' - she said. ‘What can make it a bit more difficult for a woman is that work is more intensive here, with more working hours and more problems to solve and there's a wider scope of areas to cover' - she added. Sometimes you have to work in clouds of dust or in a pouring rain. ‘But it's a great challenge' - she emphasized.

She already got used to the particular nature of her job and can see a number of upsides to it. ‘At every construction site, women soothe the savage breast and to me being a woman is an advantage. I feel that in some situations our gentlemen were more motivated and things were easier. At times, when I show up at the construction site, there's no more foul language or I can hear guys reprimand one another, yelling: "Look out, the Engineer Lady's coming!"' - Kucharczyk says, amused.

The national stadium is being built by a German-Austrian-Polish consortium of Alpine Bau Deutschland AG, Alpine Bau GmbH, Alpine Construction Polska Sp. z o.o., Hydrobudowa Polska SA and PBG S.A. The engineering personnel consists of nearly 150 engineers of various trades. Apart from Martin Metzeler, there are 20 more German engineers. This is why there are three official languages at the construction site: Polish, English and German. Metzeler is happy that engineers from his country are among those building the national stadium for Polish people. He himself is involved with Poland not only professionally but also privately: his wife is Polish and they have two kids. He doesn't know yet whether he will stay in Warsaw for good. On weekends - as he says - he ‘turns his mind off' and devotes his time to the family. ‘In the summer, we would play volleyball by the Vistula river, we would go on a boat. We sight-see. I like it here' - he said.

The stadium is scheduled to be completed by mid-2011. It is to be Europe's most advanced football arena. The structure is being built in the hollow of the former Tenth Anniversary Stadium. A unique solution will be used - a moving stadium roof suspended from steel ropes, with a spire hanging in the middle.

The stadium will have two rings of bleachers: lower and upper ones. Under the bleachers facilities such as restaurants, exhibition and conference halls, offices and the Museum of Sport will be located. The pitch will be placed on a reinforced concrete slab situated over 8 m higher than the former field. A two-level underground car park will be built underneath.

We will find out on the 30th of November if Ukraine will be able to host the tournament, only then will we see if Kyiv will host the final, or Warsaw.

I'm pretty sure Ukraine will host Euro 2012 with Poland but im not so sure about the number of host cities they will get.

Today there was an accident at the build site. One person died and another is in critical condition in the hospital. An elevator cage fell to the ground from 6-8 meters. Not to be insensitive but I wonder if that will halt work and for how long?
My condolences to the family of the workerwho died , and prayers with the one fighting for his life.

Warsaw's 2nd metro line won't be ready in 2012. The station "B-15 Stadion" will be complete in october 2013. Warsaw already fullfil the requirements for the transport for E2012 (in 2012 will be additional Speed City Rail line from airport to stadium)
