Were these pillars part of the original design, or was adding them the solution needed in order to resolve that issue they had with the stairs?

No. The venue will be used mainly for hosting non-sporting events such as concerts 10-15 times a year and conferences on a weekly basis

After 2012 there will be 3 or 4 international football games held here annually along with the domestic Super Puchar final played each February.

Dont' be silly. This could be dangerous event. Should I remind you how finished last Polish Cup Final in Bydgoszcz?

I even don't want to imagine how that "piro" could work inside SN.

Wait, I'll tell you - 0. Or maybe 1 (some moron lost his finger or smth a few years ago in some lower league if I', not mistaken). Piro is fantastic and safe in 100%.

And a quite strange news about the roof: they can close/open it, ONLY when there's more than 0*C.

Why is it strange? This has been well known for a long time now and applies to most mechanically operated membrane roofs . This is just amateur polish media trying to make a story out of nothing and in consequence showing their lack of knowledge. It has to do with insurance and what the contractor will cover. The roof can be obviously used in all conditions and temperatures however the actual mechanical motions of closing and opening the roof have to be done above freezing under the contractor's warranty. This may have something to do with the membrane becoming more brittle as the temperatures drop below freezing, however keep in mind there is also always a factor of safety involved just to be sure.

Depends what you mean by "standard" home base.

The Stadium Narodowy will be the main hosting venue for the Poland national football team although minnows such as Luxembourg, Iceland and Azerbaijan will probably play their away games with Poland in Gdansk and Wroclaw. About half of all the friendly games taking place in Poland are also likely to be held in Wroclaw and Gdansk.

When was that confirmed? I thought the FA only agreed to host one game so far. A statement like this seems pretty far-fetched.

The Polish FA (PZPN) has lost a lot of credibility over the years, especially since
the "white eagle scandal", so what they say or claim matters less and less.

Meanwhile feast your eyes on the below.
The snow and Stadion Narodowy look like a marriage made in heaven!

To you maybe. But they remain the sole rightholders for any of the national team games so unless you have any source, your claims are not worth much. Remember we are supposed to talk about facts, not about how you or me would prefer things to be...

Could be difficult because stadium won't have permanent grass.
There will be panel system. Panels with grass will be brought and installed only for matches.

NCS - owner of stadium - want to make it as a multifunctional object, where football matches probably won't be the main activity.

Well, if they qualify for european club competition (3rd place now), for sure they won't be allowed to play on their old ground. So it's either Narodowy or Pepsi Arena (though, i don't know what Legia fans would think of that :) ).

No chance for that. No team in Poland can draw crowds that big on a regular basis. Unless of course having one tier only opened sounds like an option. But it doesn't with panel grass that will cost a fortune to put together and dismantle week in week out.

Actually, who said their stadium would not meet UEFA's criteria? It does fulfill them and would only become an issue if Polonia went far in Europe. Which sounds pretty much science-fiction, with all due respect.

Their current stadium is not bad at all. Their league position is great. And still they don't manage to fill a 5,000-seater. That has to ring a bell, Polonia is simply hugely outnumbered by Legia in Warsaw at this point and has a looooong way back to its future position before being able to fill a stadium as large as Narodowy, even with only one tier open. Lechia and Lech are a living proof that a stadium itself doesn't work miracles.

13 of 16 Euro 2012 teams pick Poland over Ukraine

WARSAW — An overwhelming 13 of the 16 teams qualified for Euro 2012 have opted for base-camps in Poland, tournament organisers said Monday, leaving fellow-host Ukraine virtually out in the cold.

"It's a fact that 13 teams have chosen Poland as their base for the duration for the European Championships," Adam Olkowicz, boss of the country's organising committee, said at a ceremony after a deadline expired for picking training locations.

Despite the fact that eight teams will play their group-stage matches in each host country, only three will set up shop in Ukraine -- the Ukrainians themselves, plus France and Sweden.

In contrast, Germany have picked the northern Polish city of Gdansk as their base-camp, even though that means shuttling back and forth to the Ukrainian cities of Lviv and Kharkiv, which lie a respective 750 kilometres and 1,600 kilometres away.

Holland, who will play their games in the same locations, have meanwhile picked Krakow in southern Poland for their camp.

The choice of Krakow has been echoed by England, who will be playing in the Ukrainian capital Kiev, 870 kilometres away, and the eastern city of Donetsk, almost 1,600 kilometres from their camp.

The other teams playing in Ukraine but based in Poland are Denmark and Portugal.

Those both playing and staying in Poland are the Poles, plus Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Russia, and reining champions Spain.

Euro 2012 is the first-ever edition of the quadrennial championships behind the former Iron Curtain, in a region where infrastructure challenges outweigh anything in previous Western European host nations.

The issue of accommodation for teams, officials and fans alike has been a hot topic, with Ukraine in the spotlight due concerns over skyrocketing prices and a scarcity of rooms for supporters.

While scooping the lion's share of training camps is a clear thumbs up for Poland, organisers here have been anxious not to play up the subject at the expense of their Ukrainian neighbours.

"The issue was what are the best sites for the teams, the places their football associations were happy with," said Tomasz Szulc, head of the Polish organising committee's base-camp division.

"It didn't depend if these were in Poland or Ukraine. What mattered was providing the best conditions possible," he added.

European football's governing body UEFA has also sought to minimise the issue, previously underlining that while it presented a list of accredited potential base-camp locations in both countries, teams were free to go where they liked.

Euro 2012 kicks off on June 8 in Warsaw, and ends on July 1 with the final in Kiev.

Most new pitches are laid as rolls of turf. Once laid, it takes a few weeks before the pitch starts to look normal. Of course it's going to look poor in its newly-laid state.

I know that, but -16C and lack of sunlight are going to convert this pitch into crap. Better would be to wait for spring.

There are plans for some Rugby games to be held here, which as I'm sure you know, require a slightly bigger area around the pitch both goalside and lengthways.
Not ''freakin' huge'', but a reasonably generous amount of space.

You also have to consider the placement of advertising hoardings by the pitch. These will shorten such distances visually when placed between the front row and touchline.

Thirdly, there are security concerns to take into account to protect players and officials better from nutters amongst the spectators.

Only if they are directly in line with the ball in the players' line of vision.

Floodlights have been placed on roofs for decades now. In any case, they are probably higher than the lights on most pylons.

Correct me guys if I'm wrong, but adding five rows all around the pitch (and there is room for that) would increase the capacity to around 62-63k. It's just additional five thousand seats. It's still not enough to organize UEFA Champions League Final, where more than 70k is needed. So what's the point, except the better view of course?

Your top rows are protected by steel bars, something our idiots here didn't think about despite the 3rd ring being exactly as steep.

Actually, I had 3rd ring, central 5 row vis-a-vis the press seats, I think if I would have the same seat on your stadium, it would be blindly the same thing minus the wind blowing on the back and the steel bars.

The stadium is a beauty, there is no doubt about that, the ONLY gripe i have personally is the grey 'rails' running around the middle of the stadium, could they not colour them or something?reminds of bad times, communsim.

agree 100 percent, the grey rails make a triste look for the TV viewer! But they surely will put this blue EURO design on it.

Why?

I don't understand why a lot of new stadiums have more than the regulated 7,5 meters? How much is it at Narodowy? 15? 20 meters? Is it so you can play rugby and American football or what is the reason for placing people much, much further from the action than necessary?

Rugby is not very popular in Poland and no rugby match in the world could fill even half of Narodowy! Furthermore, in Gdynia exists already a small stadium just for that sport...

Yes, but the same problem in Bucharest as well, with those ugly grey walls. I hope they will put something on them, at least for the EL final.
I don't understand why they don't put commercials on them, like in many similar stadiums in Germany? :dunno:

Two good examples are: the Veltins Arena, or the Commerzbank Arena. Putting commercials there has more advantages. They are more visible (being a bigger surface, than the boards along the pitch), and they give a bit of color to the stadium.

Why? Bucharest stadium isn't in the league of Warsaw one. IMO Bucharest is low-budget stadium. That's nothing wrong, don't offence. Simply, Stadionul Naţional doesn't have:
- underground parking
- 25,000 m^2 of commercial
- exterior

Also details are the clue. On every step we can easily see why Warsaw stadium costed 2,5 times more than Bucharest one. Look at seats:

Wait to end of march. Oficial sponsor of Stadion Narodowy will be announced. Analysing all moves in this area, I guess it will be Coca-Cola. Then this places will be fitted with advertisement of this brand. During EC there will be Euro2012 identity bands.

Not true. It has underground parking.

Anyway...let's not start this discussion again. (it's sooooo boring, guys...)
Narodowy was built for a European Championship. Not only the costs show this, but also the quality of the materials used. Compare it to the Olympic stadium in Kiev, not to stadiums, which had half budgets, and were never meant to be more than what they are.

- underground parking

It's not low cost, it's just lower cost, despite as I said, many essential things are missing face to Warsaw.

- Facade to protect spectators from last rows from cold winds and other weather discomforts
- No steel bars at the top tier makes it quite rudimentary since it's exactly as steep as Warsaw ( maybe even exactly the same amount of rows ) and so, as dangerous to slip and eventually end up killing a few more on your way down, not to mention that the access in the stands is difficult because only just a few gates are open, many come late and struggle to get to their seats and even find out it's taken because someone messed the row/sector/seat and it can become a bit chaotic if the match began.
- You have escalators if I'm not mistaking, no such thing at National Arena, only normal stairs, I'm not crying for myself, but if you stay on the last row you have to walk a lot of stairs, an old person may suffer plenty.
- The seats...are OK, at least if there's no fat person next to you don't don't have a problem, their comfy enough. But the problem is a lot of peasant come and start taking pictures sitting on the chairs, messing them up or use them as intermediary stairs while in Warsaw, they being retractable, leave extra space.

The colors might be more spectacular on National Arena from a distance ( though I hate the different contrasts and don't look so good from up close ) but Warsaw is a 10/10 stadium compared to Bucharest, of course, you had more money and not to mention...support from the city such as metro station, parking lot and the area looks great and easy to access from the center.
I somehow consider it the best for the Euro, face to Donbass Arena it's less oval, so here Poland wins over the Ukrainian stadiums.

Bucharest is a great stadium with a vibrant interior but realistically you can't compare it to a premium multi-function stadium like the Stadion Narodowy which has a lot of commercial space, interiors, retractable roof, exteriors, underground parking and top quality fit out. I mean look at the plans, Stadion Narodowy is an expansive complex beyond just the pitch and seats.

Well, National Arena has the same retractable bluff *cough* roof, and seriously, when I was a kid, I hoped those soft-tops on cabrio's will be history :( ;).

The problem with National Arena is that, it's a Romanian icon of selfishness towards the ordinary citizen. Everything that is built for the ordinary guy is supposed to be limited, while only the smart-ass class is allowed to enjoy luxury. They didn't take a cent from the budget of the couches and the boxes, they also didn't restrict anything for that part of the stadium, only when it comes to "the rest" things are difficult and there's not enough dough for it, why shouldn't I drive the fucking Mercedes instead of 20 others having a Dacia/Renault?
It's called: simply I don't give a shit about your seat or if you have back problems because some chilly wind is blowing on your back, after the game, go home by foot because if it finishes after 22:45 there's no chance you catch a bus despite being various bus terminals near the stadium.
Parking lot? No need, there's enough space in front of the stadium for 100 Bentley's if needed. Escalators? Fuck off, to get to the boxes you can take an elevator. Commercial space? Yes, a lot, unused most of them because they sell Coke and Chips anyway and you need to stay in 2 lines cause first you need to buy the chip and they are too many but only like 2 bathrooms for a whole stand with 5.000 people.

I doubt that was the rason. So far the only team playing here is Polish NT(there were rumours about Polonia Warsaw, but it would be probably a litte bit ridiculous)-how many times a year will they be able to playe here? Don't forget about stadiums in other cities-they will also want to have NT from tim to time.

So it has to be multifunctional.

You're right. I actually forgot about quite important fact that it's a multifunctional arena, and not a football stadium as such (pitch can be put in place for NT matches and then removed for e.g. music concerts).

* level -4/-3: multi-storey car park with 1.3k spaces;
* level -2: pitch, changing rooms & warm-up zone, press center, VIP car park;
* level -1: cafe bar, shops, fan zone, restaurants, etc.;
* level 0: main promenade, shops, etc.;

* level 2: fitness club, office spaces, etc.;
* level 3: upper promenade, food outlets;
* level 4: highest level of stands, huge restaurant (1.3k m2) with views onto Vistula River and the Old Town.

The interior of course, it is an observation rather than a criticism. If I walked into a bar, saw a football match on TV, sat down to watch it (as you do), then I would not know it was at the Stadion Narodowy, or even in Poland, IMO that is a shame, especially considering the exterior.

You don't really "recognise" a stadium from it's exterior, as nice as this exterior is, 90%+ of human views will be from a TV.

Don't konow if this is only a rumor or a fact, but some news websites in Poland are saying that Roman Abramovich has bought the presidental lodge in National Stadium for 1,2 mln Euro...

Edit:

Yup, it's official :)

Soccer: Abramovich secures Poland-Russia presidential box for €1.2 mln

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich paid €1.2 million to secure the presidential box for the Poland-Russia match at the upcoming Euro 2012 soccer championships, reported Puls Biznesu, which cites unnamed sources.

This means that neither President Bronisław Komorowski nor Prime Minister Donald Tusk will occupy the box during the game, which takes place at Warsaw's National Stadium on June 12.

Mr Abramovich, who has an estimated fortune of $13.4 billion, was ranked 53rd in Forbes' 2011 list of the richest people in the world. He is the owner of the Chelsea soccer club.

Robert Korzeniowski, marketing advisor to UEFA and former race-walk champion, told Puls Biznesu that business packages for Euro 2012 games are proving popular.

“In Poland, over 400 customers have purchased ticket packages so far and that number is growing fast,” he said.

Mr Korzeniowski added that business packages are still available for each match.

The price paid by Mr Abramovich however is in no way indicative of the prices of most match-day VIP packages. The average price for one package is €1,700, with those for the final costing an average of around €6,900.

Good, 1.2 million is decent money for renting a room for 90 mins and Tusk can sit in the stands:P
Yeah, but it's money paid to UEFA, not the operator.

Ok, so the big ass middle spike is not something you could def. recognize..... sometimes i wonder if people think before they post.

PS: You might not like the design, but its instantly recognizable
What Mark was talking about is identity in respect to its location. The spike has absolutely nothing national or local about it, not mentioning that it will be shown maybe once a game. And even so, it's not that important in the first place (viewing from the inside).

And I completely agree that from the inside this stadium has nothing to it. It's big and boring. Nothing 'instantly recognizable' about it. It's better from the outside, but still arguable aesthetics.

translation --> It's Polish. Poland is Eastern Europe. Eastern Europe is poor and Soviet. Therefore, it has to be crap.

How could anything made in East of Germany be civilized. Christ, next thing you know they'll be asking to join the EU.
Contrary to you, he didn't go stereotyping the country. Nor did he say it was a bad stadium. So why the sudden accusation? So Poland build a big stadium and suddenly everyone has to love it?

The colors don't ring any bell to you?

As long as you don't realize Poland has white instead of grey in our national colours, they might look alike...

i dont believe that you cant differentiate between new stadiums. that's absolute rubbish! i could easily tell you if i was watching a game at the allianz, wembley or soccer city.
Sure, but a regular viewer would not instantly know if a stadium is located in Bucharest, Warsaw, Frankfurt, Istanbul or any other place that has a similar double-tiered bowl with corporate clients in between. The guy is pretty much right - most stadia of that size ARE being designed very similarily. The differences are a lot smaller than they used to be in the past. Not saying it's really a bad thing, but a fact - yes. The tendency is pretty much rightly described.

What a load of rubbish, FYI I lived 2003-2007 in Lodz. Too many posters have got an inferiority complex! I've looked at it, I like it, I said so, but I made an observation on it's "identity" and some are behaving like babies...........it's a great stadium, sorry I only like it 95% not 100%.....................

I am in bar, I look up, there's a football game on TV, is it showing a spike or the pitch? Good grief, all I am saying is it looks a bit "standard", don't start crying because one poster didn't think it was 100% the best stadium EVER.

BTW the seats, design and colour, look just like Sporting Gijons, just because they are red and white doesn't mean they belong to Poland. :)

In Europe, Warsaw has the only stadium with a railway station that relates to the stadium visually with wow factor. - this should be applauded.

All the other stadium stations are terrible, including Allianz Arena station, Wembley station, Stade de France (Saint Denis), Kiev Olimpijska, Nou Camp –all very unremarkable.

Thats is one superb railway station. I especially like the way the red colour bathes the platform! However I'll think you'll find that Wembley Stadium Station does have a Wembley stadium influence and looks fantastic at the same time!

Strictly speaking I'm not sure if The White Horse Bridge can be regarded as part of the railway station. Perhaps it is a seperate element - a pedestrian footbridge that goes over the Wembley stadium station.

Nonetheless I do take your point - its an architectural element which relates to Wembley stadium in a dynamic way, regardless of whether it is part of the station.

Unfortunately the Wembley stadium station itself is abysmal.

But why can't the Stade de France stadium station have a French motif - a visual element that relates to France or Frenchness in some subtle way?
That would be most appropriate.

''Stadium-specific'' railway stations play a key role in the spectator experience, especially for those visiting for the first time and arriving or/and departing by rail.

A railway station that relates to the stadium and has wow factor such as Warsaw's, leaves a very lasting positive impression.

No other European stadium-specific railway station features such innovative and eye catching elements. Its a matter of time before the Warsaw Stadion railway station receives its spoil of international architectural awards for splendid design.

haha, 'wow factor'. Yeah, putting some red glass is really so much of a wow factor. And enough to mock all the others? come on.

No other European stadium-specific railway station features such innovative and eye catching elements. Its a matter of time before the Warsaw Stadion railway station receives its spoil of international architectural awards for splendid design.
Please, enlighten me. What is so innovative about red glass? Unless of course you're playing sarcasm too well for me to notice.

oxo

^^
It is not so much about the red glass itself, but the imaginative way it is used
to create a distinctive railway station that is extremely well designed.

Using your argument you could just as easily ask
what's so interesting about the Eiffel Tower?
Its only made up of bits of iron.
What's so interesting about the Empire State building?
Its only glass and steel.
What's so interesting about the Egyptian pyramids?
They're just made up of stone.

No, I could not. Because every objective observer will notice this is just a regular train station with absolutely NOTHING innovative. It only has nice accents of red glass that give a very good effect with sunlight, but that is all. Now please try and look at the Eiffel Tower and notice those bits of iron make up for something quite uncomparable to what you are trying to describe with so big words. Way too big.

oxo
March 19th, 2012, 11:52 AM
^^

Yes, its difficult to compare the Eiffel Tower with the Egyptian pyramids in the same way it is difficult to compare the Warsaw Stadion railway station with any other architectural marvels.

Nevertheless, the fact remains that this is the only railway station in Europe that visually relates to the stadium it serves and is also the most stunning “stadium-specific” railway station in Europe, and possibly even the world.

If you (or anyone else) can prove me wrong, please post some pics of other stadium-specific railway stations that are more visually interesting and whose design relates to the stadiums they serve.
