Lovely, lovely place!

Surely a tourist hotspot for city-weary Indians.

I only hope people of the state are working hard to keep the environment and beauty unspoiled for generations to come!

Hi all...

This is so beautiful... I am planning to visit himachal during the year end. But with only 10 days of leave, I feel time is a constraint. Though all the places I have seen on the pictures are truly amazing(I wish I could cover all), please can any one suggest the best places which can be covered in a period of 10 days.

United Services Club 'Chalet' - Simla - 1909

The Mall, Simla.
The USCwas the most popular club in Simla and it provided accommodation and company for convalescing army officers up from the plains. Membership was restricted to "Commissioned military officers, army or navy chaplains, members of the Indian Civil Service and judges." Built on the side of Jakko Hill, the club's premises included 83 residential units spread over 28 acres.

Continuing the Swiss-chalet style of architecture which was popular in this hill-station, this building (1909) replaced the earlier Chalet built in 1890 to enable its members to entertain their female friends who were barred from entering the hallowed precincts of the club's main buiilding. EJ Buck's "Simla Past & Present" notes that:-

"The Chalet was at once by some irreverent persons christened the 'Henhouse', and has admirably served its purpose, and many have been the merry dinner parties and dances which have been held within its hospitable walls. Indeed after dinner even members of the Viceroy's Council have been known to unbend so far as to play musical chairs....Club dances are now held on Tuesdays and Thursdays."

It is now used as a school but the letters 'USC' can still be seen carved in the stone above the front entrance.

Town Hall - Simla - 1887

The Mall, Simla.
Whilst the Viceregal Lodge was fittingly perched on a lofty ridge, far removed from the town, the vast Town Hall was at its very epicentre. It combined under one roof, the essential elements of British society at Simla. As well as housing the famous Gaiety Theatre, there was a masonic hall, library, ballroom, retiring-room, card-room, a bar, drawing room, police station and armoury. Designed in the Gothic style by Government architect Henry Irwin, it was built by Government engineers.

When completed, Lady Dufferin wrote:-

"Whose outside is something like a cathedral, but which inside a collection of places of amusement."

Viceroy Curzon hated the place calling it 'a gaunt and graceless protuberance'. Inferior stone and shoddy workmanship caused the building to crumble and deteriorate to such a degree that the upper storeys were dismantled in 1911 and rebuilt giving the structure a much-altered appearance.

The Gaiety Theatre continues to dominate the remainder of the building. It was the home of the Simla Amateur Dramatic Club, whose membership was largely military staff officers and their wives. Fittingly in the make-believe world of Simla, far removed from India itself, the members of the ADC would entertain their own in period costume, plays, farces and fantasy. The Gaiety became the focal point of social life in the hill-station. Rudyard Kipling once played the leading role in Sardou's French farce 'A Scrap of Paper' with Viceroy Dufferin in the audience. The Viceroy was to later write to his daughter that he found Kipling's performance 'too horrid and vulgar'.

District Court House - Simla - 1898*

Built on the site of Gaston Hall, this imposing stone structure is the Court House or 'Kutcherry'. It housed the court and offices of the Deputy Commissioner, the Court of the District Judge, the Government Treasury and Treasury office, the Nahib Tahsildar, a Sessions room, and the office of the District Superintendent of Police. It is said to be in the Norman baronial style.

'Woodville' - Simla - 1938

The Mall, Simla.
The original 'Woodville' had been the residence of the British Commanders-in-Chief in India from 1865 to 1881. Located at the extreme south-eastern end of the Mall and set amongst the cedars, the property was purchased in 1926 by the Gondal of Gujurat, His Highness Maharaja Sir Bhagvat Singh and given to his daughter, Rani Leila Ba of Jubbal in 1930.

The old mansion was demolished by the Raja Rana of Jubbal State Sir Bhagat Chand who built the present structure as a summer palace for the Jubbal Royal Family and renamed it 'Woodville Palace'. The family resided here until 1977, when Raj Kumar Uday Singh , the grandson of Raja Rana Sir Bhagat Chand, converted part of 'Woodville' into a hotel.

It is a wonderful boutique hotel with plenty of character. The hotel's website carries the following endorsement from seasoned India traveller and author William Dalrymple:-

"The Woodville Palace Hotel, home of the Maharaja of Jubbal, is another survival. You sit in the Tiger Lounge and take in the sightless eyes of the tigers which stare down at you; below is a signed daguerrotype picture of Queen Victoria, The Sultan of Johore, Malaysia, and of Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur. In the hall, are two signed pictures of the Viceroy of India, Lord Willingdon and his Vicerene, Lady Willingdon. Besides these are the signed photographs of Hollywood stars of the thirty's... shooting and snobbery, viceroys and film stars, everything that might interest a 1930's Maharaja is here.”

"Cedar House" - Simla - 1899
The Mall, Simla.
The hill-station was the British replication of their idealised image of Home. Amongst the clouds, the drizzle, the cool air and the trees, the British could forget about the heat, dust and chaos of India and imagine themselves at play in the English countryside. A particular style of architecture developed in the hill-stations which combined the features of an English country cottage with elements of Gothic fantasy with Swiss chalet styles, including gabling, sloping roofs and elaborate wood detailing. Combined with Tudor timber-framing and local dhajji half-timbered features, there is little wonder that this vernacular style was so distinctive. Jan Morris describes the style as "Himalayan Swiss-Gothic" in "Stones of Empire"(1986).

Located at the extreme western end of the Mall towards Barnes Court, 'Cedar House' was said to have been built by JR Williams and named after the surrounding trees. It is now a guest house of the state government of Punjab.

Clarke's Hotel - Simla - 1898

The Mall, Simla.
Originally called the Carlton, this hotel occupies a pivotal point in Indian hotel history as it was here in 1922 that an ambitious Indian manager Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi went on to prove that he had the aptitude and application to successfully run a hotel . When the owner of the hotel, Mr Ernest Clarke, returned Home on leave with his wife, it was left to Oberoi and his wife Issar Devi to manage the place single-handedly. Eventually buying out his former employer, Oberoi went on to establish himself as India's leading hotelier and the Oberoi chain of luxury hotels is now a globally recognised name.

The architecture of this homely hostel is in the typical Simla vernacular; part-Home Counties cottage, part-Tudoresque, part-dhajji - local timber-framed cottage. It remains a comfortable hotel, old-fashioned and reminiscent of the Raj. A great place to stay with great views and throroughly recommended. It is located on the western end of the Mall about 500 metres from Christ Church.

Hotel Cecil - Simla - 1884

The Mall, Simla.
Originally called the 'Tendrils', this block was built by HR Cooke, then a Registrar who went on to be Assistant Secretary in the Foreign Office. It had originally served as flats to residents and visitors. Sold to Swiss photographer Robert Hotz in 1902, he re-christened it the 'Hotel Cecil'. Located close to the railway station, this hotel proved to be so successsful under the guidance of his hotelier wife, Florence Elizabeth Hotz that according to EJ Buck in "Simla Past & Present" (1904), it 'gained a well-deserved reputation for comfort in her hands' when she sold it to J Faletti. Hotz went on to open a second Cecil Hotel at Delhi and a third at Agra.
