日本統治時代の1910年、日本人は「武士道」を提唱するため、木造の和風の建築を創建し、伝統的な武道を宣伝し、鍛錬する場所としました。「演武場」と称し、武徳殿の前身です。これらの建築は、すべて伝統的な和風の社殿形式とスタイルを採用しており、神棚が設けられ、参拝に用いられています。一般的に、柔道、剣道などの練習場所ともされ、国民軍事化教育を提唱しました。
台南武徳殿は、元々民生緑園の東側にあり、後に1936年に今の所在地で再建されました。台南武徳殿を他の県や市に現存する武徳殿と比較してみると、台南武徳殿の規模は比較的大きく、保存は比較的完全で、日本人の殖民統治の歴史の証人といえます。
