Taman Safari Indonesia (Indonesian Safari Park) located at Cibeureum, Cisarua Bogor, West Java, was constructed in 1980. This location was a non productive tea plantation of about 136.5's Ha. given by local Government Governor of West Java to the Oriental Circus to manage as Taman Safari Indonesia.

Taman Safari Indonesia, located in a Buffer Zone of Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, stands at an elevation between 900-1,800 meters above sea level, with temperatures ranging between 16-27 degrees Celsius. Taman Safari was established as a National tourism Object by the Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunication, (Late) Mr.Soesilo Soedarman, and pronounced as Indonesian Centre for Reproduction of Endangered Wildlife (ICREW) and Ex-situ Conversation by the Minister of Forestry, Mr.Hasyrul Harahap at March, 16, 1990.

The location is between Jakarta and Bandung, around 80 km from Jakarta or 1.5-2 hours by car. While from Bandung, capital of West Java, about 78 km or 3 hours drive. If coming by public transport, from bus terminal, Jakarta (Kampung Rambutan) to Bandung, stop at Cisarua. From Cisarua continue by minibus or by public motor cycle, it takes only 15 minutes to arrive from there to Taman Safari Indonesia.

Taman Safari Indonesia was designed with two concepts in mind combining modern zoo tourism with an area of natural beauty, opened for the public in 1986, the animals collection in that year held about 250 animals from 100 different species. Ten years later, October 1995, the collection now has more than 2500 animals from 200 different species. More than 50% were born at Taman Safari, other wildlife have been entrusted by th Forestry Department (Directorate General PHPN/Forest Protection and Nature Conservation) the remainder entrusted from public or exchanged with wildlife from overseas zoos. Part of the wildlife collection at Taman Safari are protected species not only endemic in Indonesia, but also from the five continents. Some animals as endangered species, need special care to increase their population with captive breeding.

Like other zoos, Taman Safari has many programs. While we are a tourism site, we actively support conservation populations of endangered species and their habitat and facilitate the increase of scientific knowledge that will benefit conservation. And also promote and increased public awareness of conservation needs.

Humboldt Penguins arrive at Taman Safari Indonesia

Cisarua, Bogor (ANTARA News) - The rare Humboldt Penguin (Speheniscus Humboldti) can now be seen at Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI), Cisarua, Bogor, West Java.

Six pairs of the animal arrived at TSI on February 2,2008 from Tokyo`s Sea Life Park, Japan, to be saved from extinction.

TSI spokesperson Yulius Suprihardo said the animals, aged between 10 and 13 years, had been placed in a special pond and cage.

Their new home was equipped with a temperature controlling system and a device to maintain the salinity level of the water in the pond in order to emulate their natural habitat near the South Pole.

TSI would feed the penguins "teri" and "japuh" fish.

Native to South American, the 12 penguins still need to be quarantined under the supervision of TSI`s medical team, consisting of Tokyo veterinarian Hiroshi Takeuchi and the head of TSI`s nursing department, Imam.

Yulius said the animals were in a reproductive phase and expected to breed at TSI.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) reported that human activity had caused a drastic decrease in the Humboldt penguin population and the species was now on the brink of extinction. Only 12,000 Humboldt penguins are now left in their natural habitat.

The animals reproduce by laying eggs in holes in the ground for an incubation period of 40-42 days.

Their natural habitats lie along the Pacific coasts of South America, close to the South Pole.

The species can dive to depths of 60 to 150 meters at a speed of 14 km per hour to catch prey.(*)

Meriahkan HUT RI ke-64, Taman Safari Indonesia Gelar Parade Satwa

Jakarta - Dalam rangka memperingati HUT RI ke-64, Taman Safari Indonesia Cisarua, Bogor menggelar acara kolosal berupa Parade Satwa yang melibatkan puluhan jenis satwa. Satwa yang ikut meramaikan parade mulai dari satwa melata, satwa primata, satwa carnivora, sampai jenis unggas, dan berbagai jenis satwa lainnya.

Demikianlah rilis parade satwa tahun ini dengan tema 'Bhineka Tunggal Ika' yang dikirim bagian Humas Taman Safari Indonesia Cisarua sebagaimana yang diterima detikcom, Senin (17/8/2009).

Perjalanan parade ini akan dimulai dari jalur Pariwisata sampai dengan lapangan parkir Cowboy Show. Parade satwa ini diawali dengan barisan pembawa spanduk, kemudian disusul dengan barisan Marching Band dari salah satu sekolah terkemuka di Cianjur, disusul dengan barisan Duta Bhineka Tunggal Ika, kemudian barisan gajah, dibelakangnya akan diiringi kendaraan hias, lalu barisan Unta dengan berbagai pernik-pernik juga turut meramaikan parade satwa ini.

Barisan satwa karnivora seperti harimau dan macan tutul, barisan Burung, barisan kuda, orang utan, simpanse, ular, burung, burung pemangsa, binturong, barisan bayi-bayi satwa dan masih banyak lagi jenis satwa lainnya yang ikut memeriahkan Parade Satwa ini.

Tidak ketinggalan para keeper (perawat satwa) yang biasanya menggunakan pakaian seragam dengan warna hijau-hijau, untuk kali ini tampil sedikit berbeda dengan mengenakan pakaian warna-warni, ada yang menggunakan pakaian adat Kalimantan, dan pakaian adat lainnya. Selain itu barisan liong dan barong juga akan memeriahkan acara parade satwa ini, disamping barisan badut satwa.

Parade yang melibatkan puluhan jenis satwa ini memakan waktu sekitar 1 jam. Barisan Parade Satwa ini akan berakhir di Panggung Cowboy Show. Parade satwa ini termasuk acara unik, karena di Indonesia baru Taman Safari yang menyelenggarakannya. Tidak hanya acara parade satwa, tetapi di Panggung Gajah juga akan menyelenggarakan acara yang bertema HUT Kemerdekaan RI.

Kegiatan Parade Satwa ini diadakan secara rutin setiap tahunnya atas permintaan pengunjung. Selain untuk memeriahkan HUT RI yang ke 64, parade ini juga dimaksudkan agar pengunjung dapat mengenal sekaligus menambah rasa cinta terhadap satwa dan budaya Indonesia.
