Top Rangs Bhaban floors cave in
15 hurt, 12 of 50 trapped inside rescued
Staff Correspondent Nearly 50 people were trapped under the debris of Rangs Bhaban in Dhaka after it had collapsed a few minutes before 10:00pm Saturday.
At least 15 were injured in the collapse of the 22-storey building which the government, engaging private firm Six Star Corporation, has been pulling down since September 9.
Altaf Hossain, a day labourer of the corporation, said he was working on the 21st floor at around 9:35pm when he saw the floors from 19th down to the sixth cave in.
About 50 day labourers were taking rest on various floors at the time of the accident, he said.
Traffic sergeant Kamrul Islam, on duty at the place at that time, said he heard the sound and saw the roads and buildings shaking. The injured were taken to hospital.
Of them, Azhar, 22, and Shafiqul, 30, were admitted to Dhaka Medical college Hospital, hospital sources said.
Another day labourer, Ronnie, said he was working on the 10th floor at the time and he managed to jump onto a pillar.
Fire service people failed to enter the building till midnight. Six fire engines were conducting rescue work. They could rescue 12 of the trapped people. The condition of six of them was reported critical.
The Rapid Action Battalion and other law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area. Vehicle movement was suspended on the Airport Road.

^^ Thanks Dopekhor. So the outside structure is still intact...I had thought perhaps it had imploded. Suprising I could not find anything on this subject on any internet news media. At any rate I think no more construction workers should be allowed back here...it will be an unstable structure...they should call in some foreign help if necessary and use controlled detonations.

This is the result of unplanned manual work. When people try to demolish buildings with such magnitude with manual labor, this sort of things happen. Plus, BD firms don't have experience demolishing high rises as well. I know they demolish buildings as high as 4-5 storied, but not higher than that. Using dynamite would have been very risky as well due to densely populated buildings. Very sad news nonetheless.

ty for the pictures dopekhor.

It wasn't an accident. This happened because of some individuals' lack of knowledge and sense of responsiblity.

I am resident in Dhaka and following this one with interest, but horror, at the same time. The whole Rangs Bhaban episode does not reflect well at all on Bangladesh, to put it mildly. The photos in the newspapers are a grim reminder on what can happen when corners are cut, and corners were cut every possible way in respect of this. The decision not to destroy the whole building and leave 6 floors was politically and legally correct but totally impractical, why not compensate the tenants to move out? The hustling out of the tenants to start the demolition work was juvenile, dangerous and an insult to those tenants who were paying good rent. One worker had already died during the demolition and the final death toll here makes this a catastrophe.

Bangladesh needs to wake up to building safety, it is not so expensive you know. And people's lives are more valuable than profit making. The 1 lakh taka compensation is an insult to those families who have lost their loved ones so unnecessarily.

I hope the authorities find those who are culpable and punish them, but most of all, the whole construction industry must start to take this seriously!!!!

Yes, it was built without proper permit in the first place. Now the Govt has plan to build a road near it.
