With new statistics showing that congress-based tourism is becoming the biggest tourist magnet to all major cities today, I thought it was the right time to start a thread about existing & new developments of congress & exhibition infrastructure in our region:)
In Europe, Germany is the absolute leader in congress & exhibition tourism. One only has to mention an event like BAUMA, world's largest construction industry trade fair held tri-annually in Munich...

But what about the rest of us?:)

In Belgrade, we have "Sava" Congress Center...this is what Wiki says about it:
Sava Centar (Serbian: Сава центар / Sava centar) is an international congress, cultural and business centre of various multi-functional activities located in Belgrade, Serbia. It is has the largest audience hall in the country and entire former Yugoslavia. It has been host to numerous large scale events and performances.
The construction of the biggest congress and performance hall in Yugoslavia (as called back then - now Serbia) started in 1976. The hall would be located in the new construction area of the city of Belgrade, New Belgrade. In those years the capital of Belgrade spread across the rivers of the Sava and Danube to construct a modern alternative to the historical city. The complete construction of the project took three years, until 1979, and was headed by chief designer and team manager Stojan Maksimović. Most of the construction took place in 1977 when the skeleton of the building was complete. Supporting architecture such as roads and highways were also built during this period around the Sava Centar complex.
Sava Centar has 69,720 m2 of useful and 100,000 m2 overall area, including a theatre hall with 4,000 seats, 15 conference halls, an exhibition area and a number of other facilities. It annually hosts more than half million visitors. Sava Centar is connected to Continental Hotel Belgrade via a special underground hall way. The complex also includes restaurants and bars as well as offices and shops.
The great hall, nicknamed the blue hall due to its blue seats is the largest audience hall in the country with the above mentioned 4,000 seats, both ground and upper level included. The hall has the ability to completely change its look depending on the stage set-up. As a result seats can be taken out. It is also the place major cinema premiers are hosted.
Sava Centar has been the host of significant congress gatherings and artistic programs: OSCE, Annual General Meeting of IMF and the World Bank, 55th Annual General Meeting of Interpol, 6th UNCTAD, General Meeting of UNESCO, FOREX, FISIT and 9th Summit of the non-aligned countries.

Sorry, but I don't think there are many similarities between them :)
I like the NDK cause overall it's a huge project for that time, its not only the congress centre, the squares, parks behind, the bridge, etc. You have underground boulevard, lots of underground facilities and when they build the metro station there, it will look great. And besides, next to it is the blvd Bulgaria/blvd Vitosha road intersection and overall it looks great even on google earth. But together with the metro station, they must remove that ugly ruined communist monument cause it makes the whole place look bad.
Anyway, I think that NDK is one of the good things the communists built in Sofia.

This style is killing me. Oh, god...

The only one large Romanian city in Balkans is Constanta.

Well, it was the architectural style of that period, you can't expect something different. Anyway, this is the project with the latgest infrastructure development built in conjunction with it...perhaps the airport will be a good competitor some day, but not now. And for example, take BPS...overall there are perhaps more money invested in its buildings than in NDK...but its infrastructure sucks big time.

^^Yeah, it's getting worse, cause they began building office buildings outside the park. And there is another big project next to it, the residential park (RPS) which is still not started AFAIK (should check). Alexander Malinov blvd ends abruptly near the police academy and after that you have lots of construction works, bad roads and yet unfinished junction to the ringroad. The parking places are not enough, even though there is some multilevel parking lot. But the worst is that soon, Alexander Malinov blvd will become a traffic hell with all those retail stores there too. It just sucks and I am a pessimist about that area..
