Foglio1986 December 9th, 2007, 10:43 PM Chongqing is a modern city, with an ancient history spanning more than 3,000 years. It is the nation's fourth municipality after Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin. It encompasses within its borders, a great wealth of water reserves, mineral resources, dense forests and abundant flora and fauna. Being the focal point of the unique Yangtze Three Gorges tourist industry, Chongqing is a tourist attraction as well as being a commercial city. Situated in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River - at the confluence of Yangtze and Jialing Rivers, in Southwest China, Chongqing is a port city with the largest area and population in China.

Chongqing is such an amazing city. I have to admit I'd never heard about this modern and enormous city before I visited SSC, but after seeing this and other threads it features prominently on my travel to-do list.

If time and more importantly money were no factor I'd most definitely do that. But unfortunately they do, so I have to make choices. I've already been fortunate enough to have visited Hong Kong and Beijing, so that makes deciding a wee bit easier, but there's still a whole lot more I'd want to see with my own eyes. Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Harbin, they all appeal to me, but for some reason Chongqing fascinates me more than those others (probably the combination of the fact that it's still fairly unknown in the west compared to many other major cities in China, the location and the sheer size). Oh well, we'll see where it all ends...

SimFox January 1st, 2009, 02:02 PM Actually ChongQing is MORE dense than Shanghai. And in places MUCH MORE dense than Shanghai
ChongQing aslo has a very different feel to it than east coast cities. Pitty this isn't really reflected in the pictures which almost all seem to be taken in small area at the tip of the peninsula made up by confluence rivers. Also careful avoidance of like "under the towers" (what is a "shame") is very unfortunate as it robs pictures of true CQ character.
Another odd thing is that although CQ is a know as FOG city practically all pictures are made on a sunny day, which is IMHO boring and uncharacteristic. City come in its own when it shrouded in clouds when those towers uppear and disappear in them - absolutely surreal view.City is also very green -forested mountains cut right into downtown.

you all will be AMAZED at the city now. ....
I first visited CQ last year (May 2009), then visited again in 2010 - and the change in 1 year is incredible. .....
CQ definitely is more dense than SH, I think it is due to geography and CQ's very eloquent inclusion of green space - that forces skyscrapers to be hyper dense and tall. I think CQ has China's/Asia's tallest residential skyscrapers, NOT Shanghai - like most might think.
