Comparing with the render on first page, it looks like concrete has topped.
The tower on the right has those steel columns sticking out, these will support the ornamental steel frame crowning.
The last skybridge looks ready to be hoisted and the globe at the top hasn't started yet.

Not many farmers can afford buying condos like this in China. But it will be free for any person whose Hukou (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hukou_system) is registered in this village to live in this building. The villagers do not own the condos (they can't sell their assigned condos to outsiders), since the building along with all other village properties (land, buildings and companies etc.) are owned by the village and distributed to its villagers. This is one of the very few places that still adopt the idea of communism/socialism in China, and surprisingly most of such villages are doing very well. More ironically, the village hires lots of migrant workers (much more than its registered residents) to work in its many factories, so basically the villagers are a bunch of wealthy capitalists who adopt communism among themselves.

Damn, what farmers are going to be able to afford to live here?

I did some online research on this tower, and I need to correct some errors in my previous post.

The tower is funded by 200 Huaxi villagers who each invested 10 million RMB in cash or share capital (about $1.5 million), and therefore these 200 villagers are the owners and shareholders of this building (I thought it was owned by the village like everything else). The least amount of personal savings among the registered residents is over 1 million RMB, so it is pretty easy to find 200 such investors within the village. Anyway, things are run in a really different way in Huaxi compared to the other villages in China. The village made a profit of 3 billion RMB ($450 million), so I guess money isn’t an issue for them to build such a supertall.

Here is video (in Chinese) showing the village and how they raised money for the tower.
http://news.enorth.com.cn/system/2010/04/16/004611848.shtml
These are the village share capital certificates they used to invest in the building:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4855154352_301bd138c8.jpg
Each certificate has a face value of 1 million RMB:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4138/4855154312_f8302db8b1.jpg

Also I noticed in the news the building is called "新农村大楼", which is literally translated into "New Countryside Building", so I am not sure what they will finally use as the official title. This is indeed an interesting project like no others.

what a ugly tower, im sorry
what do the inhabitants of wuxi think of this tower? doesnt it ruin the skyline or do they love it?

did you honestly read a single post in this thread before you said this?

where is the exact location of Huaxi Village?

WOW, I did not know this building was actually built, seems like there are only two kind off people . People who hate it and people that love it. I would have loved to see this builing in a city like Tokio though:nuts:

The story behind Wuxi and their economic model of collective coop and a rare rural success at industrialization are far more interesting then the tower's design.

I like the tower mostly because of the very unique story behind it.

another village in this city, every village family gets 1KG gold and 1KG silver. there is a common factor of these kind of villages, they own a large factory.as a sharehold(naturally),villager gets bonus every year.

^^1斤(which is 500g), not 1KG. Unlike Huaxi village, that village has been keeping a low profile very hard for a long time. Now they blew the cover by distributing gold and silver. Jiangyin really is an incredible city.

Anyway, I think we can nominate this for the ugliest supertall in China award. This building is freakin ugly. And that 24th floor interior picture... I think even McDonald's has more tasteful interiors these days.

It's so strange to see a Chinese city adhere to their culture so much. Although the design of the tower may only have subtle elements of Chinese, its interior is extremely Chinese. Something people in the region should be proud of. Such a nice change from the usual 'modern' look that most towers in Chinese cities have.

^^ It's a nice tower, however doesn't it kinda destroy that 'village' feeling that al those visitors come look for?

People visiting Huaxi are not looking for the traditional sense of village life, they come to witness how a village can transform itself to an industrial powerhouse through entrepreneurship. I remembered back in the 90s people visit Huaxi to see and marvel how their villagers can live in villas and own cars.
