But it will be free for any person whose Hukou (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hukou_system) is registered in this village to live in this building. The villagers do not own the condos (they can't sell their assigned condos to outsiders), since the building along with all other village properties (land, buildings and companies etc.) are owned by the village and distributed to its villagers. This is one of the very few places that still adopt the idea of communism/socialism in China, and surprisingly most of such villages are doing very well. I think Wuxi is a pretty urban metropolis near Shanghai. This building is in Huaxi village near Wuxi, not in Wuxi city itself. fragel August 3rd, 2010, 01:01 AM I did some online research on this tower, and I need to correct some errors in my previous post. The tower is funded by 200 Huaxi villagers who each invested 10 million RMB in cash or share capital (about $1.5 million), and therefore these 200 villagers are the owners and shareholders of this building (I thought it was owned by the village like everything else). The least amount of personal savings among the registered residents is over 1 million RMB, so it is pretty easy to find 200 such investors within the village. Anyway, things are run in a really different way in Huaxi compared to the other villages in China. The village made a profit of 3 billion RMB ($450 million), so I guess money isn’t an issue for them to build such a supertall. Here is video (in Chinese) showing the village and how they raised money for the tower. http://news.enorth.com.cn/system/2010/04/16/004611848.shtml These are the village share capital certificates they used to invest in the building: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4855154352_301bd138c8.jpg Each certificate has a face value of 1 million RMB: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4138/4855154312_f8302db8b1.jpg Also I noticed in the news the building is called "新农村大楼", which is literally translated into "New Countryside Building", so I am not sure what they will finally use as the official title. This is indeed an interesting project like no others. Not many farmers can afford buying condos like this in China. But it will be free for any person whose Hukou (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hukou_system) is registered in this village to live in this building. Although the design of the tower may only have subtle elements of Chinese, its interior is extremely Chinese. Something people in the region should be proud of. People visiting Huaxi are not looking for the traditional sense of village life, they come to witness how a village can transform itself to an industrial powerhouse through entrepreneurship. I remembered back in the 90s people visit Huaxi to see and marvel how their villagers can live in villas and own cars. |
