21-Storey Business Hotel to rise in Mandaue City

A 21-Storey Business Hotel, which broke ground yesterday, will rise in front of the Cebu International Convention Center at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City.

The hotel is owned by the Lua Family in Mandaue City.

Architect Anthony Abelgas said that the hotel will not have amenities found in five-star hotels for the reason that it is a busines hotel. Instead, it would have a coffee shops, function halls, a ballroom, and other things that would specifically attract tourists.

The hotel is tentatively named "Nature's Suite," as the concept of the hotel is nature-inspired. It gives the feeling that one is outdoors, he said.

He said the hotel, once finished, would be the biggest in Cebu with 1,071 rooms.

Delegates attending a convention at the CICC, for instance, would no longer have to go to Cebu City for a place to stay, abelgas said.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes, who attended yesterday's groundbreaking ceremony together with the Lua Family, said he is glad the hotel will rise in the vity's most strategic area, it being near the CICC and the Parmall, which is now under construction.

if my memory serves me correctly, there wasn't a single press release about HongKong Plaza Hotel... info came directly from the owner (interviewed by @jarenz et al) and from the construction workers and the pic of the project's text signage (c/o @rage) which was posted outside the fence when it started the construction...

Mandaue to get first high-rise
Cebu Daily News
Last updated 12:00nn (Mla time) 12/11/2007

MANDAUE CITY, Philippines – Mandaue City will have its first high-rise building in 2009. It will be a 21-story business hotel just across the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes said the building “will become a landmark.”

The highest buildings in Mandaue reach only up to six stories high compared to neighboring Cebu and Lapu-Lapu cities.

One of the tallest buildings in Mandaue is also one of the oldest — the San Miguel Brewery building.

“This project will be a catalyst for change,” said Cortes, who led groundbreaking rites at the former 6R Equipment lot across the CICC.

Anthony Abelgas, project architect, said the business hotel will be tentatively called “Nature Suite” since the owners also own Nature Spring Waters, based in Mandaue City.

The building will have 1,071 rooms. /Reporter Dale G. Israel

Seems they used Sketchup for the render to delineate the building and an aerial to emphasize the mass of the structure. Maybe a man's eye perspective would give it justice.

The colors used in the design does not exactly remind one of nature, but it does remind me of Richard Meier's post modern architecture :)

Remote controlled noh? because the one near Abellana doesn't move continuously at 180 degrees both sides but rather intermittently.

I tried to observe how the camera at the Abellana area moved and I noticed that there are times that it will move to the left, and then stop, and then move immediately to the right, etc.

They need to do pile driving for its foundation. Since the area is reclaimed, it requires numerous piles to be driven to ensure that the structure is stable.

Pag wala pa stable na soil, hindi hihinto ang pile driving, although everything has been computed through resultd from soil sampling tests.

Usually foundation works eat up 30-40% of the building cost especially if the subsurface soil is not "stable"

Here's a more comprehensive introduction of pile foundations

I have a question...

What is the proportion in terms of the depth of a foundation with regards to the height of a building?

For example how deep usually (in terms of floor equivalent) does a foundation have to be if a building is say, 40 stories, so that it won't topple over during a strong earthquake or typhoon?

I have a question...

What is the proportion in terms of the depth of a foundation with regards to the height of a building?

For example how deep usually (in terms of floor equivalent) does a foundation have to be if a building is say, 40 stories, so that it won't topple over during a strong earthquake or typhoon?

.:.

It depends on the soil characteristics - its ability to hold a structure without slipping ...if clayey, sandy or other types...and also depends on the total weight of the superstructure - or the building itself...

Piles are driven to hold onto a "hard" soil in order to support the weight above...

There are cases when a three storey building is supported by 10 lengths or more....per pile driven in a hole

Lateral movements caused by Earthquakes and wind (typhoon) are considered for structures 3 storeys and up. The total load they cause are then being ansorbed by walls, roofs and beams which in turn are supported by the columns. All building weight or load are carried by the columns which transmit them to the foundation.

The total load computed per column should be supported by its foundation, either footings (the mat or slab that carries the column)...

If the load is too great, that a footing cannot carry then engineers resort to piles - which is a very costly form of foundation....

Piles are common for areas with soft sub-soil i.e. reclaimed or near seas with sandy soil....

For stable soil such as limestones or hard soil - mat or footing foundations are typical... these were used by buildings inside IT Park, along Fuente-Ramos, Ayala and mountainous parts of Cebu...

The size, depth and type of foundation depends on the total load the entire structure carries and the soil strata....

i think wala ma hold woi.. kay sige man gihapon ang work.. i even see several trucks going in and out of the area and some vans unloading scaffolding and some machineries.
perhaps its just very difficult to establish a building in a newly reclaimed area rather in a stable land area....

from a very reliable source: this project will be indefinitely put on hold. when it will resume? no details available.

rumor has it that the company is still recovering their investments in Mindanao. their expansion in Mindanao did not do well. once they have recovered, construction will resume.

this is just to set everyone's expectations. :) and this is not an official announcement. rumor lang :D

the Lua's had no known large investments in Mindanao except the Philippine Spring Water Plant in Cagayan de Oro which dili man sad seguro losing since Nature's Spring Water is doing good in both Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

^^ question: since i assume there won't be diggings, how does pile driving work to support a 20 storey building?

^^

I think they will still dig bai..It's just that when they get to the bottom, they will now have a sturdy foundation to work on because of the piles embedded underneath..

:dunno:

^^
They need to do pile driving for its foundation. Since the area is reclaimed, it requires numerous piles to be driven to ensure that the structure is stable.

Pag wala pa stable na soil, hindi hihinto ang pile driving, although everything has been computed through resultd from soil sampling tests.

Usually foundation works eat up 30-40% of the building cost especially if the subsurface soil is not "stable"

Here's a more comprehensive introduction of pile foundations

http://www.sbe.napier.ac.uk/projects/piledesign/guide/chapter1.htm

hehehe....

chapter 10 taman (comprehensive of pile driving), di ko kaya sa 5 mins scan

I have a question...

What is the proportion in terms of the depth of a foundation with regards to the height of a building?

For example how deep usually (in terms of floor equivalent) does a foundation have to be if a building is say, 40 stories, so that it won't topple over during a strong earthquake or typhoon?

.:.

Same question here.

excavation na sila.. morag lawom lawon jud ang gikawot nila..

You mean pile driving first before digging?
