HK has the Octopus, Singapore has EZ-Link, London has Oyster and LA has the "Tap Card". The Tap Card is LA's version of the smart card system. It works in the city's public transportation system such as The MTA and also transit systems of neighbouring cities such as Culver City and later on, Santa Monica. It will be operational in 2008 and time will tell whether The Tap Card becomes a success or not.

This is amazing. I used the SuICa card in Tokyo and it was amazing just tapping everywhere! and I could use it at a lot of convinience stores.

I forgot about The Suica. Anyway, it's still a question whether the tap card will be sucessful in LA not that the majority of the city's population drive. LA is one of the few major US cities to have a smart card system.
I would suggest that the Tap Card can be multipurpose kinda like those of Octopus or EZ-Link. That means that you can use it to buy food or drink in 7-11 and so on.

A great slogan for Metro would be "Tap that ass!" but I imagine it would be rejected :(

I've already seen Tap card readers placed on several MTA buses. Culver City and later on Santa Monica would be using the same system as well. It gonna be in effect.

this is not a gimmick at all... try hong kong. you buy one card and ride simply and effortlessly around the entire system
i think you can even buy water with it?

Yes you can buy water with Octopus. Just go to your neighbourhood 7-11 or Park and Shop :)
Anyway, I'll be back in LA this May. Might as well buy a tap card :D

I used the smartcard when I lived in DC, and it's really convenient. You can put a lot more money onto it than a regular metrocard, and if you loose it, you can get it replaced.
