REDS is developing the Yialou Retail Park in the area of "Yialou", Greater Athens.

Yialou is located 15 km from the center of Athens and has a catchment area of 1.6 million (within 30 mins). It will be the largest retail park in Greece.

Retail Parks often lack "atmosphere" and design. Yialou will provide a different, more welcoming experience to the retail park visitor.
It will include a hypermarket, DIY, toy, furniture, electrical and other stores, and will be adjacent to Greece's first McArthur Glen Outlet Center (a plot agreed to be sold to McArthur Glen by REDS). DEVELOPMENT TYPE: Retail Park LOCATION: Yialou, Greater Athens COMPLETION: 2009 SITE AREA: 91.000 m2 GBA: 54,600m2 GLA: 53,600 m2 COMMERCIAL VALUE: € 110 million PARKING LOTS: 1600

In 2007 a pre-agreement was signed with Henderson Global Investors Limited for the sale of Yialou Retail Park, to be developed by REDS.

This center, located in Attica's western suburb Elefsina will not only cater for the undersupplied local area, but its excellent access via the National and Attiki Odos Motorways enlarges the catchment area hugely.

The retail center will comprise of both large and small retail units, as well as cafeterias and restaurants. Development Type: Retail Center Location: Elefsina, Western Attica Completion: 2009 GBA: 15.000 m2 GLA: 9.400m2 Commercial Value: € 20 million Parking Lots: 300

One of REDS' more recent acquisitions is a site at Academia Platonos. Academia Platonos is located in the Athens Historical Center very close to the new location of the Athens Stock Exchange. The site, at this fast-developing area of Athens, will be formed into prime modern office space.

The offices in Academia Platonos are part of a real estate development framework that will give new dimensions to the business pulse and urban life of Athens.

The project involves high-standard office buildings, of which business life in the Athens' center is lacking, with essential modern facilities consistent with the requirements for Grade A office space. DEVELOPMENT TYPE: Offices LOCATION: Athens, CBD COMPLETION: 2009 GBA: 19.000m2 PARKING LOTS: 380 COMMERCIAL VALUE: € 50 million

Next to the Panathinaikos FC stadium a new shopping centre, the biggest in Southeastern Europe with 80,000 m2 leasable space will be built. Until a new one with some 100,000 sq metres leasable space will be built close to the Athens airport. I am not sure if it will be from the REDS Development group or the Latsis group, I need to check.

Also, In the introductory document about the new park in the former Hellenikon Airport, it is the first timer after 25+ years that the use of the words "tall buildings" is observed with regards to the developments due to take place in the north-east side of the complex. In a prominent and not necessary pro-skyscraper Greek newspaper (that is, Eleftherotypia for the ones familiar with the Greek reality) we have seen the number "five" next to the alleged "tall buildings" that are to be built there.

However, nothing concrete is available yet, although we have been flooded with various events and publications that call for the return of height in the urban planning of Athens. However, in the absence of further developments in the field I keep my silence. The only thing that I know for sure are some rumours about some commotion going on with the entrance of the Dubai Holdings in the Greek Economy (they bought a few banks and other significant companies) who are major participants in the Marfin Investment Group, currently the biggest Greek corporate conglomerate... and we all know what's going on in Dubai :D.

In addition, it is rumored that Kostas Kondylis, who has built many skyscrapers (including some for Donald Trump) was reputedly in Athens and as for the Hellenikon area, there have been numerous proposals for its redevelopment including many with tall buildings.

Also, not to forget that now that all the boom for the infrastructure works for the Olympics has subsided and what we see in Athens is simply a moderately paced extension of the existing infrastructure network, in terms of Roads and metro stations, chances are that pressures for a vertical expansion in terms of commercial space in the new hot spots of real estates are high.

We may see the groundbreaking for the first new generation scrapers for Athens before the turn of the decade that is... :D

In any case, the projects depicted by Konstantinoupolis are notable, and we should thank him for bringing them to our attention. The coastal development plans are amongst the best in Europe and the market is now mature to receive their realization.

Nope. The new opera will be at the place of the old Hippodrome at Delta Faliron.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (http://www.snfoundation.org/page/default.asp?id=4&la=2) will create a huge cultural park there. It will include the New National Lyric Scene (Opera), the New National Library, a big park + some others cultural facilities. The project will cost over 300 mil. euros.

Here (http://www.snfoundation.org/page/default.asp?la=2&id=1384&pl=3725&ap=3722&pk=9) (sorry only in hellenic) you can watch some videos of the meeting of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation's board of Directors with the Prime Minister at the site in Delta Faliron. As the videos says (18/7/2007) the pre-works (i don't know if this term is right) has already began.

lol, about hellenikon as you already know the ministry of public works resealed the previous month (26/11/2007) the plans for the site (something like a map with the rules and the terms).

I noticed that all projects are public projects. This is good.

Do you have details of this cultural park?

gm2263
December 28th, 2007, 06:04 PM
Details have not been announced since the end proposal may be the result of an international architectural competition. For sure though, the area will become one of the best recreational and cultural facilities in Europe, combining the Mediterranean setting with the European class in a very original manner.

I need to see the architecture drawings of these buildings to draw a conclusion since what we have up to now is rather sketchy at the moment. However, the fact that the project is to be realised by the Stavros Niarchos foundation, more than guarantees prompt completion (which for a project of such magnitude brings us to the middle of the next decade, somewhere between 2013 to 2015).

Notably, in terms of megapolisomancy - "urban magic" transformations, the new museums and cultural attributes are extended in almost a straight line - on the axis from North to South, that is, Vasilissis Sophias to the Syggrou-Phaleron "Delta" area. The war Museum, the newly extended Byzantine Museum, the new Modern Art museum which is a converted brewery factory also known as the "Fix" building, the completion of the new Acropolis Museum with its full opening next spring, and now, a new Library abd Opera, Lyric Theatre with other cultural venues nearby, not to mentioned one new 3,000 seat capacity ultra modern congress hall which came out of the conversion of the Olympic Taekwondo theatre.

Tall buildings give a city robustness. Cultural centres give a city quality of life, the "living well" (ευ ζήν) as our ancestors. And AThens has received many high-quality cultural venues recently. :)

The new "Public" multi-store opened for business on 1 Karageorgi Servias street in Syntagma Square. For a number of years the building was used as a vocational training school.

The 5-storey building was acquired by the Germanos Group of companies at a price of €30mn during a rather adventurous process because of the many owners and the ownership status of the building. It took another €7mn and one year in order for it to be fully restored to its current state. The contractor was ACron constructions currently also involved in the reconstruction of the historic 10-storey "Minion" in Patission street which will be the new mega retail hot spot probably by the end of 2008.

Floors above ground: 5
Total Floor area (Also sales area): 5,000m2
Completed: 1911 (!)
Fully renovated: 2006-2007

The Onassis Home of Letters and Fine Arts looks really beautiful and the new Panathinaikos FC stadium will be in my personal top5 worldwide when it's finished.

The Academia Platonos looks also good.

But it would be nice to see some new highrises in some parts of Athens.
It must have one of the strictest height limits worldwide. I hope it will change in the near future. I don't want to see Athens full of scrapers, but some good-looking highrises in suitable areas would be a nice addition for this great city.

Environment, town Planning and Public Works Minister George Souflias announced on Monday the construction of a new network of motorways in the prefecture of Attica, having a total length of 55 kilometres and linking the Attica motorway with the coastal Posidonos motorway as well as, with a tunnel through Imittos, with the Mesogia region from Agia Marina to Rafina, including the airport. The project, budgeted at 1.2 billion and be carried out with the method of assignment, will have a very important characteristic: The complete (up to 90 percent) length from Katechaki motorway in the region of Vyronas down to Posidonos motorway, having a total length of 14.5 kilometres, will be underground. Souflias said that this option will increase the cost of the project considerably, but it will result in the slopes of Imittos in the direction of Vyronas, Ilioupoli, Argyroupoli and Elliniko remaining intact. The sections that will not be built underground will be at locations where overpasses will exist.

One CANNOT praise enough Mr Souflias's obsession for the completion of the public works and infrastructures required for Athens.

With this new network of 30+ miles of new highways and their access roads and ancillary road systems, which is to be added to the existing efficient transport and road network that has successfully put to the test in the 2004 Olympics, by 2013-2015 Athens will have one of the most complete motorway systems in the European continent and by 2020 when I expect that ALL the works, including the new 20km line 4 of the metro system as well as the extensions of the suburban rail to be operational, the city will be close to perfect as far as its infrastructures are concerned with a complete motorway system, four lines of metro, one extensive network of suburban rail connections as well as an expanded tram network and new terminal(s) at its international airport.

The important element here are the 9 miles of tunnels below the Hymettus mountain which will allow the direct connection between Athens and eastern Attica (the greater prefecture) preventing at the same time the visual, aesthetic and environmental damage that would have been inflicted had the 6-8 lane motorway branches been allowed to run along the slopes of mount Hymettus this separating the municipalities of Vyronas, Argyroupolis and the rest of the affected suburbs, from the mountain. This development alone brings the new extensions at the forefront of urban developments on a pan-European scale as far as road infrastructures are concerned.

Also, a Chinese company called Cosco, made a full offer for two piers at the Piraeus port to be used exclusively by them as a gateway for China's products to the Mediterranean. According to the news, the port of Piraus will receive the mount of 4.5 bn Euros over 30 years as a rent for the use of the docks, excluding import taxes :D

Of course, all that is good but the old wolf here expects the last development needed, i.e. the abolishment of the 27m height limit for Athens and Greece which will allow the city to gain a robust look that will accompany the efficiency of its infrastructures.

@Thanks Sava.

New roads to shift city up a gear

The Environment and Public Works Ministry unveiled plans yesterday for the construction of a 55-kilometer highway road network to be built around Attica at a cost of 1.2 billion euros.

“With these projects, we are doubling the roads with high-speed traffic and contributing decisively to upgrading the environment and easing traffic congestion in central Attica,” said Minister Giorgos Souflias.

Construction plans are based on six different projects that include linking the Attiki Odos to southern parts of the city, through a 14.5-kilometer underground tunnel that will ease traffic in the eastern and southern parts of the capital.

Plans also include the construction of a 3.5-kilometer tunnel through Mt Hymettus and reconstruction of parts of Poseidonos Avenue as an underground road.

Ninety percent of the total 55 kilometers will be underground.

The initial tender process is seen as being launched by the end of the year with the roads expected to be open for use in 2013, including the toll booths.

“Toll charges are a basic part of the tender and the only thing I can say is that the toll charges may be cheaper than those that we are paying on the existing Attiki Odos, but under no circumstances will they be more expensive,” said the minister.

Drivers will be hit with a toll charge through an electronic monitoring system that will determine the charge applicable, depending on the distance of the new road used by the vehicle.

Largest Shopping Center in Greece under construction:

Babis Vovos Shopping Center in Votanikos Area, Aghias Annis and Aghiou Polykarpou streets.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Athens%20Skyscrapers%20and%20Modern%20Architecture%204/BabisVovosVotanikosShoppingCenter-c.jpg
Image extracted from the BVIC 2007 Annual Report

According to recently published information extracted from the "Babis Vovos International Constructions" 2007, Annual Report, (click HERE (http://ir.babisvovos.gr/uploads/oso/2007/BVIC_Annual_Report_2007_GR.pdf) to access the Greek language version) construction has began on the new shopping center which will, upon completion, be the largest in Greece as well as presumably the new flagship of the company's extensive property and project portfolio.

The complex constitutes part of a larger development in the previously derelict area which also includes a new state of the art football stadium for the Panathinaikos Football team, allegedly also built by the same general contractor. This stadium is expected to replace the existing Panathinaikos FC one already in use and release numerous acres of public space in Ampelokipi, one of the most densely populated inner city districts of Athens. Expected time of completion for both projects (stadium and shopping center) is the end of 2009.

The new shopping center is being built on a land plot with area 43,216 sq meters and will have a total surface of 69,000 sq meters above the ground, as well as a parking capacity of 2,400, presumably indoor.

We should note here that the area alone is not or is barely sufficient per se to dethrone the "Mall Athens" in Maroussi from its position as the largest shopping center in Greece with some 56,000 sq meters of Gross Leasable Area alone. However, if we take into account that the 69,000 refer to the total area above ground, meaning that probably the leasable or or otherwise usable space below ground is not included, we reach the conclusion that probably (according to what's already has sporadically been leaked to the press), we may be talking about a shopping center with some 70,000 square meters of Gross leasable space both above as well as below ground surface. Still we have to wait for these assumptions to be confirmed though.

What I may have reservations regarding the above is the fact that there are plenty of atria as well as other public spaces which make the existing "mall Athens" one of the best facilities of its kind in South Eastern Europe. I am not sure that the BVIC design for the new shopping center may be as generous in terms of the non-leasable public space areas of the shopping center.

In any case, I will not jump into conclusions on this until I see the end result which I don't doubt, will be great.

For your information, except from the above shopping centers, there are also others under construction, such as:

-The new 40K GLA (Gross Leasable Area) in Maroussi to come out of the refurbishment of the International Broadcasting Center (Completion end of 2008). Contractor: Latsis Group

-The new 38K GLA in Galatsi on the former Olympic Gymnastics hall, built by the Charagionis Group (possibly with the Portuguese Sonae Immobilaeria).

Also, we have a presumably gigantic project (the biggest in Sout6h-Eastern Europe if realized), presumably by REDS development which is still awaiting for the Green light with some alleged 110,000 square meters to be built at the Cambas Estate in the Messoghia region to the East of Attica. This is an old one but the information is still sketchy.

-Also, there are a number of smaller centers in the area of 20K-30K GLA still awaiting the Green light including the Discount center of McArthour Glenn for the Messoghia Area too. Still no news as the companies are reluctant to disclose much until the projects are well into construction after groundbreaking in which case the major tenants have already posi5tioned themselves and they have something solid to advertise for... :).

Athens Heart - Shopping center, opening 4 December.

180 Pireos is a vibrant new retail centre on Athen’s Pireos Street located on a main route halfway between the Acropolis and the ancient Port. The design provides 25,000sqm of retail and leisure space over 4 floors with panoramic restaurant terraces, with views towards the Parthenon, beneath a fully retractable 55m span roof. The simple axial atrium layout is criss-crossed with illuminated bridges creating a dramatic internal flow of space.

The interior concept expands on the architectural concept of a ‘forest’, with the ‘interior’ engaging the sense of openness, space and simplicity within the forest clearing. There are uplifting views of the impressive spanning canopy which can be opened to the sky. The canopy will be further enhanced at night by projections of dappled light, an inference to the natural tree canopy.

The translation of the concept is illustrated with use of neutral finishes. These include pietre and basalt grey flooring, oak ceiling planks set within a white plaster board ceiling, oak cladding to escalator bases, simple glass balustrades with stainless steel rail and cream reconstituted stone bases to the shop facades. This overall use of finishes provides a neutral back drop to the bold illuminated orange bridges that cross the atrium on 1st and 2nd floors. The 2nd floor mall area is ‘open’ to the sky and this level is dedicated to restaurants whose facades are clad in Iroko planks. The 2nd floor will evoke a sense of ‘outside’ regardless of an open or closed canopy.

On each level there are opportunities to display texture of flora and fauna with custom-built planters in considered locations throughout. The largest planter is located at the base of the atrium together with a water feature of both jets and an infinity pool.

We have already discussed about the Golden Hall Mall which is under development at the site of the former Athens 2004 Olympic International Broadcasting Center (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=27101836&postcount=292).

I had the opportunity to take two pictures of the above mentioned building in which reconstruction works go on at a frantic pace for it to make the deadline or at least to be ready for the Christmas season.

Wait for more pictures after it is completed :).

Capitol: New Shopping, Leisure and Cultural Center

http://www.charagionis.com/images/centers/capitol/logo.jpg

In a district where no building was developed during the last 25 years and is lead to gradual degration, a grand new building will be developed with a dominant position in the Athenian urban grid. The development was stalled for more than 5 years by the Organization of School Buildings. When this obstacle was surpassed, its construction began. The completion of development of the building block will restore and redefine the entire area.

This building block, which includes a garden of 1000 m2 with recreational spaces, will be open to the public and will shorten the basic pedestrian route of tourists from Victoria ISAP station to the National Archaeological Museum.

In more detail, on a corner plot on Ioulianou, 3rd Septembriou & Skaramagka streets in Athens, that will include commercial stores for the daily needs of residents, local range entertainment and leisure spaces, cultural centres, as well as the first museum of classical cars in Athens with more than 120 exhibits, ranked among the largest city car museums in the world. Distinctive architectural characteristic of the building is the helical ramp dominating the forefront face of the building, that allows the visitor a stairless access to the last floor, inspired by the Guggenheim Museum in New York. This inconceivable idea of Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the greatest architects of all times, gives the building an original personality for Greek buildings, which usually suffer from suffocation of the rigid General Construction Regulation. This building will also be serviced by a seven level underground parking for 800 cars, reaching a total surface of 28,000 m2.

The property is located in 4-6, Gravias Street, in the centre of Athens, and consists of two separate listed buildings.

This complex, currently undergoing development, will aesthetically upgrade the area through the preservation and renovation of the two aforementioned listed buildings’ façades. The project will comprise seven (7) storey high (total area 2.150 m2) with two (2) underground levels.

“Parko” will be located downtown Athens. This building will host offices as well as the Library of the Athens University of Economics and Business. The complex will also provide an underground parking lot with total surface of 8.850m2.

Hermion

http://www.charagionis.com/images/projects/ermeion_2.gif

Hermion, a project of paramount importance for Charagionis Group, is located in the area of Plaka. The project consists of two phases. The first phase was completed in 1980 and it currently occupies 4.500 m2. The complex accommodates the well-known restaurant Hermion as well as folk art shops.

The second phase, due to begin soon, includes an extension of the actual building and is planned to provide a three building complex with retail stores, residential units, coffee-restaurants and a cultural area, occupying 9.800 m2. With the expansion of the building, its historical character will be preserved and its prestige as a monumental building of the area will be enhanced.

The complex, due to its position and design, creates a link between the areas of Plaka and Monastiraki and foresees a great number of visitors per day. The new complex will be harmonically integrate with the architecture of the area of Plaka, where Neoclassicism dominates, and will successfully connect the old with the new.

Aegean Park: Shopping and Leisure Center

http://www.charagionis.com/images/projects/logo_aegean_park.gif

In the area of N. Faliron, near Karaiskaki stadium, on a plot of 45.000 m2 owned by the joint venture Sierra Charagionis since 1999, the development of the Shopping and Leisure Center Aegean Park is planned.

According to the latest proposal, after the completion of the project including commercial and recreational areas, a free space of 20.000 m2 will be open to the public. The open area will include a park with many facilities, which will be maintained electric power supply, security, cleaning etc exclusively by the owners. Moreover, the center will accommodate a car parking space and a special waste system, and will provide green spaces, fountains places for the relaxation and the like.

The investment for the development of Aegean Park will reach 300 million euro in total thus making it the greatest Foreign Direct Investment yet to be undertaken in Greece. For the time being the project is undergoing the permitting process.

Yet another small-medium sized shopping center (according to the international standards that is) with GLA around 30,000 square meters (make it at least 60,000 total, including parking, etc). And this one came as a surprise to be honest, most of the recent publicity on shopping centers went to the "Athens Heart" one on Peiraios street,as well as the "Golden Hall" on Kifissias Avenue, both presented in the previous page.

Not to forget that the line 2 of the metro is to see an extension for another 5km up to the old Hellenikon airport, now an exhibition center, to be completed by the end of 2009. So, the metro will stretch along up to the middle of Vouliagmenis Avenue serving another 250,000 people minimum if we consider all the suburbs up to Voula and Kavouri where the Vouliagmenis Avenue ends.

In this manner, this excellent spot will attract people from the center of Athens up to the coastal suburbs (some 700,000 inhabitants). Excellent choice of location.

I have heard about this for some time now but I hope it is not realized UNLESS something of equal of bigger height is built. We should not forget that the 1985 building code does not allow for anything taller than 27m to be built in Greece.

Of all the Athenian land plots, THERE a 40-story tall building can be built.

KONSTANTINOUPOLIS
November 24th, 2008, 02:48 PM
@marcb, pity for the workers, do you have more info about the center, like who is the architect, construction company, in what stage of completion the building is?

I suspect a reptile-type complex not a T-Rex :D

I imagine a building of HQ, tall with lots of green spaces. If they are thinking to build again one of the usual Athenian office compexes like the one that quite recently babis vovos built in Halandri

http://www.babisvovos.gr/uploads/property_portfolio/gallery/Ethnikis_Antistaseos_BIG.jpg

http://www.babisvovos.gr/uploads/property_portfolio/property_show/Ethnikis_Antistaseos_3_BIG.jpg
www.babisvovos.gr (http://www.babisvovos.gr)

then better not to demolish the OTE headquarters. Anyway i was at the athens mall 2 days ago and there was activity in the OTE building. The one of the 3 wings had been covered with these green things we see on the buildings mainly on the historical buildings in city center. The 2nd wing seemded like they scratched the paint, as result of that the paint of the half part of the 2nd wing looked to fade out or something like that.

Beautiful complex and probably the biggest mulpiplex in Europe with its 20 screens plus the openair summer theater :). Been there many times but allow me to say that this is a refurbishment and not a new construction... unless they expanded the stores and shopping areas.

FYI, there used to be a "Planet Hollywood" restaurant there back in the day (mid 90's) where Bruce Willis and his band had performed.

Also, the particular area has a carrefour supermarket and a HUGE entertainment and fun park, the famous "allou" fan park http://www.allou.gr/main.html.

And yes, the whole area looks like south central Los Angeles. Without the gangs of course :D.

Renzo Piano's Environmentally Progressive Design Concept for The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC)

Date January 09, 2009

The Board of Directors of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (www.rpbw.com), a world-renowned architectural firm, will reveal the design concept for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), comprising the Stavros Niarchos Park and buildings for the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera.

The SNFCC, the first public-private endeavor of its kind within the Greek State, will create a new urban icon to enable both Greek citizens and global visitors to experience art, education and green space. In its creation of the SNFCC and its collaboration with Renzo Piano, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation was inspired by its strong ties to Greece, its enduring mission of enriching the lives of citizens from around the world, and its commitment to preserving the natural environment.

The presentation of the concept design of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) by the architect Renzo Piano , will be held on 24 January at 17.00, at the Athens Concert Hall (Friends of the Music, hall) with the cooperation of Megaron Plus.

Full report on the project:
Renzo Piano's presentation in Athens Megaron Concert and congress Hall, Jan. 24, 2009:

____________________________________________________________

Introduction

After a long period of anticipation the renowned architect Renzo Piano presented his "preliminary" designs on the new Athens Opera and National Library Complex.

The project is located in the place of the abandoned estate formerly hosting the installations of the old Athens equestrian center a premium location by all means standing at the intersection of Syggrou, Ethnarchou Makariou and Posseidonos Avenues, bordering with the grounds of the Taekwondo stadium (now used as a convention center and congress hall) as well as a number of marinas, entertainment and other recreational facilities and installations, an estate constituting a hot spot in what is rapidly becoming known as "the Athenian Riviera.

A very good visual idea on the particular spot is given by the following Google Earth image where the site is exactly in the center of the image.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Miscellaneous/AthensOperaandNationalLibraryLocati.jpg

Renzo Piano's excellent presentation took place in the main hall of the Athens Megaron Concert hall where all available seats have been occupied long before the official starting time of the event.

Rationale and Philosophy of the project - Preliminary Considerations

The particular location, occupying some 18 hectares of land, has been coveted by many developers and has been the object of lust of many urban planners. In the late 1960's to the early 1970s there have been a number of proposals for the wider area mostly comprising highrise hotel and/ or residential complexes:

1968:

1972:

http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22634/35748/429285/0/Phaleron+Delta++-+small800x.jpg

Up until the Athens 2004 summer Olympics the area was used as an equastrian center, which was relocated to the new installations in Markopoulon, to the north-east of the capital. part of the developments of the Olympic installations was the construction of an elevated corridor, the well known "esplanade" which connected Syggrou Avenue to the coastal zone, something which, given the emptiness of this vast area prompted Mr Piano to characterize the esplanade as "connecting nothing to nothing", clearly describing the "urban void" next to it.

A few years ago, the Niarchos foundation (founded by Niarchos, a Greek shipowner and a major competitor of Onassis BTW) decided to build and donate to the Greek State a long outstanding array of two buildings: The Athens Opera House (now known as "Athens Lyric Scene" and accommodated in an outdated theater in downtown Athens) and the new National Library, which will decongest the existing historic but totally inadequate Athens Library Building (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=streetnationallibrary-astreetns-greece) also located in the center of the city.

Renzo Piano went to work immediately and true, we've seen pictures of his initial meetings with the Prime minister and members of the cultural administration but still, the whole announcements were painting a very sketchy picture where the only constant element was his idea to create what he called a "cultural park" where free green space would be the primary objective, as well as an unobstructed view to both the sea and the Acropolis.

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z222/Ares_K_album/skyscraper/ContentSegment_7912200_1.jpg

A first announcement on the plans was expected late in fall 2008. The event took place on January 24, 2009. And it was worth the wait.

Here is a short video I took with my photocamera (sorry for poor quality) showing Piano's entry to the podium at the beginning of his presentation:

wpACVFzdY8c

In the first part Mr Piano addressed the audience and made a review of his architectural philosophy which, according to his own words revolves around the following axes:

The presentation consisted of two parts.

1. Adaptation of each work to the environment and the purpose of the work. He mentioned all of his projects from the Beaubourg in Paris to more recent works including the known cultural center in New Caledonia, the Times-Warner building in NY and others.

2. Transparency and avoidance of "secluded" spaces through the use of transparent building materials wherever possible.

3. Also depending on the character of each project, acclimatization of each project with the local prevailing conditions. For Athens and Greece two are the major elements: The Mediterranean flora and the Sea.

Describing the notion of the green roof as a means of integrating with an already existing green environment. This is a project in San Fransisco

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Miscellaneous/RentzoPianoAthensMegaronHall3.jpg

After this general overview Mr Piano proceeded to the explanation of his implementation philosophy on his first Greek project:

First of all, as it is already known Athens is a densely built city. The same pertains to the suburb opposite the land plot where his project is to be built, which is called "Kallithea". The English translation would be "Bellvue" and the Italian one "Bella Vista" according to the words of Mr Piano himself. The name implies that once upon a time the view from Kallithea used to be "beautiful", facing the Saronic Gulf. All that before the 1960s that is. So, Mr Piano took into account that this particular area lost its connection with the sea which Mr Piano considered to be equal to a loss of identity for this part of the Athenian coastal zone.

In order to restore this balance, it means that although the structures had to be "big" this had to take place in a manner not "intrusive" to the urban reality of the neighboring suburbs. On the contrary, his project should alleviate the burden of the loss of contact with the sea and thus he needed to follow a different approach than in other cities where greenery was not the primary objective. The complex is to be "submerged" under the edge of slightly sloping garden surface. In this manner, a continuous accessing space will be allowed to a wide terrace overlooking the sea with the two main buildings literally buried but not hidden since in the middle there will be a huge atrium, the agora, which will allow the unobstructed movement of the visitors though all levels of the complex to and from the sea, as well as the vast expanse of the sloping gardens to the side looking towards the city.

The height at the highest point of the project's elevation is 30 meters. The slope of the artificial hill is at a 5 degrees angle to the horizontal plain.

Some drawings: You may click on images for an enlarged version of each image.

Notably, both the library and the opera will be parallel in terms of orientation with their south side looking towards the sea and their north looking towards the city of Athens and the Acropolis.

Conclusion: Spiritual Ascension

My view: Speechless.

Renzo Piano created an art of work where the prevailing element was the concern for the needs of the particular neighborhood, besides the functional needs of the institutions he was called to serve. The environmental integration of this project to the overall environment is seamless and beyond any criticism with perhaps the observation that there will need to be LOTS of ground-digging and other foundation works before we see a glimpse of the final shape of the project.

This factor, combined with the complex demands in terms of structural engineering simply implies that completion of this work will be lengthy at least. A modest estimation is for about six years with the planning horizon extending well into 2015 and perhaps beyond.

In conclusion, Renzo Piano's overall attitude and demeanor left the audience with the best impressions and confident that one of the biggest if not the biggest work for the city of Athens is about to start soon.

Some interesting additional infos. The height of the building will be 40 meters. On the top of the roof will be an 40-60 meters antenna, reaching the building (on his highest point) the 80-100 meters.

Another element i like is the water canal. With 500 meters length and 30 meters width will be a great addition to the complex.

I have been quite a time ago to check the area where the museum will be built.

If I am not mistaken about the place, what seems to be the most inspirational project in Athens along with Calatrava's OAKA complex, is placed in one of the least inspiring areas... far behind Pireos Avenue.

I must say the place does not do justice to this project and I find it very difficult to figure out how could the project give a boost to the surrounding area. I hope I will be wrong and the whole area will change to the better.

... btw Theatron's exterior looks very dull. i havent been there though...just the photos.

Personally i support these kind of developments in abandoned areas. Anyway, infos and hi-res images are following.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Part 1

THE CULTURAL PARK OF THE HELLENIC COSMOS (CPHC)

The project involves the re-utilization and metamorphosis of a large dilapidated industrial site of 60.000m2 in the heart of Athens on Piraeus Avenue, through its conversion into a cultural park centered around Greek history, mythology, and landscape.
The design of Anamorphosis-Architects comprises the general concept, the master plan, the landscape and three major built-complexes of educational, cultural and recreational use, in one integrated whole.
The park is also integrating the adjacent existing buildings of the Hellenic Cosmos including the Old Reception, the Virtual Reality Theatre and the Conference Centre. The CPHC is planned to become a new cultural centre of national and international appeal, a new agglomeration-pole, as a result of its programme and architectural design.

The three major complexes of the CPHC are:

A) the Exhibition and Research Centre (http://www.anamorphosis-architects.com/projects/IME_02RCAC/RCAC.html)
B) the Art & Education Centre for Children (http://www.anamorphosis-architects.com/projects/IME_03AEC/AEC.html)
C) the Museum of the Hellenic World (http://www.anamorphosis-architects.com/projects/ime/project_IME.html)

The principal intention of the FHW is to create a complex of cultural and educational orientation. That is a complex which would not simply accommodate some standard cultural activities, but also invent new kinds of programmes through spatial means that could also have a direct urban impact. In that context Anamorphosis-Architects introduces design more as a medium for educational and communicational purposes and less as a simple sheltering of a given functional programme. Furthermore the design proposal is very much based on the obliteration of the boundaries between landscape and buildings and also between architectural and urban scales.

The general design concept is based on an instrumental and contemporary understanding of history and myth as a recurring morphic logic, active and inspirational, in everyday life, and so, capable of generating new spatial and urban contextualization - a concept opposed to any sterile idealizations and symbolic commemorations. Furthermore, the way in which Greek history and mythology relate organically with certain landscape features and gestures has become the major principle of our design, from master plan to detail, and then elaborated into a general morphic paradigm of instrumental and educational character.

Nikos Georgiadis elaborates on the concept of the extended architectural site, in a spatial/psychoanalytic context, in 'Tracing Architecture', AD/Architectural Design, Vol 68, 3-4/1998, guest edited by Nikos Georgiadis, see Editorial pp.7-10.

The CPHC will be realised in three phases: The first phase includes the Exhibition and Research Centre and the Art and Education Centre for Children, and the second includes the Museum of The Hellenic World. The first phase started in Spring 2007.

I see some really cool proposals for public buildings/projects (museums, theaters, parks etc...) here...

But in general for a city of its size - many projects look either cheap or boring... One should expect alot more from a city the size of Athens...

And how come the number of projects in Athens posted here on SSC is so low? Are there that few projects worth mentioning?

This is your opinion, mine is different.

One should expect alot more from a city the size of Athens...

And how come the number of projects in Athens posted here on SSC is so low? Are there that few projects worth mentioning?
First of all there aren't many Hellenes who participate systematically in SSC.

Second, most of them don't live in Athens.

Third, since you made those questions here, what kind of projects do you want to see in a city like Athens?

The "Theatron (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=31947842&postcount=116)" which belong to the Foundation of the Hellenic World (FHW) too and its close the U/C cultural park cost around 30-40 mil. euros (if i am not wrong). The cultural park which is way bigger than Theatron and thinking logically is going to cost a lot more.

According to a guy from www.airliners.gr (http://www.airliners.gr) the plans for the satellite terminal are moving ahead. The plans includes increasing capacity and new commercial spaces.
At the moment there is a general trend for the study project which will be completed by mid 2009.
2010 will start the construction of a multi parking.
The project will oversee the architectural firm of Theophanis Bobotis.

lol, something similar happened to me couple months ago, i clicked a link to see a video presentation of a new stadion and for couple of secs i was like "is this a real stadion project or a football game trailer by EA sports?"

As for the marina, imo in its present form yes it's not bad, but on the other hand it isn't an architectural landmark/masterpiece/youname-it either.

The future form gives a new look and a new use to the marina, it brings nice buildings which they will contain cafes, shops, cinemas, market, restaurants, mythological park and generally a marina more open to the public.
Something similar with the Floisvos marina which opened in this form quite recently (a year ago if i am not wrong).
Although the Floisvos marina doesn't have the variety of the future Alsity marina, the idea is the same, to be more open to the public. Anyway i will post later some images of Floisvos :)

Καταρχάς, ποιες είναι οι θρησκευτικές πεποιθήσεις του κ. Γαβρά; Μιας και κρίνει τα πιστεύω μας δεν θα ήταν δικαιότερο να μας πει και αυτός με την σειρά του τα δικά του πιστεύω;

http://www.oodegr.com/oode/epitheseis/eikones/gavras_2.jpg
Ερωτήματα που προκύπτουν: πώς είναι δυνατόν η καταστροφή το 500 μ.Χ. να είναι ΜΕΓΑΛΥΤΕΡΗ απ' ότι το 1674 μ.Χ., 1174 χρόνια μετά; Και ποιος στην ευχή ανέβασε πάλι πίσω στη θέση του το κομμάτι που... έλειπε το 500 μ.Χ.; Αυτό δεν υποτίθεται ότι το κατέστρεψαν οι "κακοί" Χριστιανοί;

Ποιος "έκρινε τα πιστεύω μας"? Και ποιοι είμαστε "εμεις"?Δηλαδή όταν γράφω "Μιας και κρίνει τα πιστεύω μας" εσύ τι υποθέτεις ότι εννοώ και ζητάς περαιτέρω διευκρινήσεις;

Πρόκειται για μιαν εντελώς εκτροχιασμένη "λογική". Δε μιλάμε για το Γαβρά εδώ. Μιλάμε για το φιλμάκι.Και το φιλμάκι ποιος το έφτιαξε; Τα διάφορα που απεικονίζονται μέσα στο φιλμάκι ποιανού προσωπική "γραμμή" είναι; Και εν τέλει ποιος είναι ο κ. Γαβράς και τα λεγόμενα του αλλά και τα έργα του δεν υπόκεινται στην κριτική;

Και βέβαια, σε ένα αμάρτυρο γεγονός, ένας τίμιος ερευνητής οφείλει να αναρωτηθεί: ήταν ένα μεθοδευμένο γεγονός; Κι αν ήταν μεθοδευμένο γεγονός, πώς στην ευχή επιβίωσαν τόσες ειδωλολατρικές μορφές που γνωρίζουμε ότι δεν αλλοιώθηκαν μέχρι να πέσει η βόμβα των Βενετών; Γιατί η επιβίωση των ειδωλολατρικών μορφών μέχρι τον 17ο αιώνα χρειάζεται αιώνες χριστιανικής ΑΝΕΚΤΙΚΟΤΗΤΑΣ πράγμα που μετρά πολύ περισσότερο[6] (http://www.oodegr.com/oode/epitheseis/gavras_1.htm#_ftn6). Μήπως τελικά ήταν ένας στιγμιαίος βανδαλισμός; Αλλά από ποιους;

Μήπως δεν έπεσε η Αθήνα θύμα επιδρομής Σλάβων τον 6ο αιώνα; Μήπως δεν μεσολάβησε Εικονομαχία; Μήπως δεν υπήρξαν αργότερα επιδρομές Βουλγάρων; Μήπως δεν υπήρξε λατινοκρατία στην Ακρόπολη από το 1205; Μήπως δεν γνωρίζουμε τις ανεικονικές αντιλήψεις των Μουσουλμάνων που ήλθαν αργότερα;

Attiki Odos - Extension

Attica Road extension has entered into final stage with the assignment of its construction. The new roads will link Kaisariani with Poseidonos Av. And Agia Marina, in Koropi with Rafina. Environment and Public Works Minister G. Souflias, in a press interview announced that a bid for the construction of the Attica road would be placed on December, 22. The contractor will be decided at the beginning of 2010 and the project will be ready in 2015. Mr. Souflias described it as a major project linking Katehaki with coastal Poseidonos Av. Through a Hymittos tunnel.
The project completes the ring road of 71km total length and estimated budget 1.8 billion euros.

350.000 Trees in Hymettus

Environment and Public Works Minister G. Souflias said that the contractor could start works at the beginning of 2010 provided that no serious objections are raised. He said the estimated time for the completion of the 71.6km long road will range from 55 to 65 months with an interim 50 month agreement for the completion of the 14.7km critical west Hymettus ring road from Katehaki- Oulof Palme till Poseidonos Av. Eighty-five percent of the new ring road will be underground to protect the environment.

Mr. Souflias also announced the installation of an electronic system for the payment of tolls per kilometer. Which as he said is the most fair system. He also referred to another important point which is the planting and conservation of more than 350.000 trees in a total of 5.5 thousand acres of land along the borderline of residential area in west Hymettus. Also a fire detection system will be installed for the protection of the area which has been declared national park Natura. Environment Minister described it as a major project where comments and observations of several competent sectors were taken into consideration.

In parallel, procedures for the completion of other road projects in Attica are under way. Among those projects are extension of Kymi Av, till the national road, partial sinking of Alexandras Av., widening of Kifisos Av.

Mr. Souflias underlined that he had placed top priority to Metro projects during his 5.5 years at the Ministry. Operation of Nomismatokopeio station begins in a few days while another four stations Holargos, Peristeri, Anthoupolis and Haidari will be delivered at the end of the year.

The fact that the Metro tunnel was constructed with absolutely no provision for AGHIA PARASKEVI Station was a structural outrage and a worldwide first that forced us deal with an extremely difficult technical challenge in June 2004. It was inevitable to interrupt the operation of the Metro in order to construct AGHIA PARASKEVI Station. At an intensive pace, we designed, put to tender and constructed the box of AGHIA PARASKEVI Station, inducing a minimal in terms of time disturbance to the passengers.

Although it was an extremely difficult technical project, thanks to out systematic efforts and sparing flashy words we succeeded in winning the battle against time and managed to re-commission Metro Line to the Airport within a very strict time schedule, proving the fallacy of all those who anticipated major delays.

At the same time, we completed the construction of NOMISMATOKOPIO Station and by December 2009 we will have completed the construction of HOLARGOS Station. Today, we deliver NOMISMATOKOPIO Station, the first of ten new Stations of the Athens Metro to be commissioned in the following 10 months.

The distance from NOMISMATOKOPIO to the city center (Syntagma) will be covered in only 10 minutes, while, in rush hours, it takes at least 40 minutes to travel the same distance by car.

For this reason, we constructed at the surface level of the Station the largest Bus/Metro Transfer Station, in order render the Metro system easily accessible to the residents of the adjacent Municipalities as well as of Messogia. The Transfer Station will be delivered to the public in 15 days.

Moreover, we early foresaw the need for and constructed a major 3-level underground parking area with a capacity of 630 parking places, enabling thus the residents of the adjacent Municipalities and the eastern suburbs of Attica region to easily and safely park their cars at Nomismatokopio and continue their trip with the speed and comfort offered by the metro system. This large parking facility will be delivered to the public by the end of the month, while one of its levels will be delivered within 15 days.

Leaving aside the exceptional architectural and aesthetical aspects of the station’s interior and exterior, we point out that this station constitutes a major transportation junction, where the Metro system is seamlessly combined with other modes of transport (buses and cars), providing high quality services and comfortable trips to 30, 000 passengers on a daily basis.

In addition, concurrently with the resuming of operation of the Line to the Airport, we made the relevant provisions and we are constructing two open air parking areas with a capacity of 250 parking places each, at Koropi and Kantza Stations. These two parking facilities will accommodate the residents of the southern and eastern areas of Attica region. The first parking area (at Koropi) will be delivered to the public on September 20th and the second one (at Kantza) by the end of the September.

The large parking facility at Nomismatokopio as well as the above two parking areas at Koropi and Kantza will be incorporated into the AMEL’s pricing policy, according to which the Metro passengers enjoy a 50% discount on the parking fee upon demonstration of a valid ticket.

The largest front of Metro works in Greece

Undoubtedly, the Metro constitutes the most important transportation and environmental project in Attica region and, for this reason, we at PEHODE made the development of this project our top priority. In the last 5,5 years all available funds for the transport infrastructure in Athens were channeled, on a priority basis, to the Metro extensions, which are implemented at a very rapid pace, since we managed to double the rate of the Metro construction works compared to the period before 2004.

We have a comprehensive Transport Plan. Through the implementation of Metro works as well as through the construction of regional road axes, we intend to eliminate traffic congestion and air pollution from the neighborhoods of Athens.
We implement a thorough policy in order to improve the environment of the capital city, a policy which is based on specific major projects as well as on highly effective measures, setting aside any demagogic practices, sterile refusals and meaningless magical solutions employed by petty politics and other interests.

We currently implement, with no flashy words but with hard work, the largest front of Metro works in Greece. HOLARGOS Station will be delivered in December and AGHIA PARASKEVI Station early next summer.

In a few months, by the end of 2009, we put an end to the isolation of the western Suburbs of Athens, through the commissioning of new Stations at PERISTERI, ANTHOUPOLI and HAIDARI. By next spring four more Municipalities of the Attica Basin will have also acquired modern Metro Stations (ILIOUPOLI, ALIMOS, ARGYROUPOLI AND HELLINIKO).

The tender related to the Metro extension from Haidari to Piraeus with the construction of Stations at AGHIA VARVARA, KORYDALLOS, NIKEA as well as with three Stations at Piraeus (MANIATIKA, PIRAEUS, DIMOTIKO THEATRO), where 6 consortia/technical firms claim the construction of the project, budgeted at 515 million euros, is in progress.

The Metro Line in the shape of a horseshoe (Line U), with 20 stations and 20 km of underground line, from Galatsi to Maroussi through Panepistimio and Pagrati, will be soon put to tender. This Line is anticipated to alter dramatically the transportation map of Athens and to upgrade life in Attica Basin.

Hyundai Rotem wins another railcar contract in Greece,
worth 270 billion won

- To supply railcars for Athens Metro line 2 & 3 (102 Electric Multiple Units)
worth KRW 270 billion won

- Wins contract by receiving highest scores in technical evaluation

- Second contract from Athens, following the first in 2002 for 126 units

- To supply newest high technology cars with light weight, low noise and high efficiency

The quality of Korean-made railcars was once again acknowledged in Athens.

The consortium of Hyundai Rotem Company (Yeo Sung Lee, Executive Vice Chairman & CEO)
and Hanhwa, announced on 16, Sept that it has won the contract to supply 102 Electric
Multiple Units for the Athens Metro Line 2 & 3 worth 160 million euro(KRW 270 billion won).

Hyundai Rotem first tapped into the European railway market in 2002, by supplying 126 units of
electric railcars to Attiko Metro A.E., for the Athens Olympics.

In 2002 Hyundai Rotem was delivered its railcars to Athens 3 months in ahead of schedule,
in time for the Athens Olympics. Such contributions and good word of mouth from citizens,
led to the success of winning its second contract from the Attiko Metro A.E..

In 2004 during the first run of the metro line for the Olympics, George Superes (Minister of
Construction and Environment) said, "The new railcar from Korea, that will connect the
airports to the Olympic Stadium is among world's finest. As I took a test ride along the line,
I am impressed with the advanced technology , and I am confident that passengers will be
satisfied with the quality of the vehicles."

The contract signing, held at the headquarters of Attiko Metro A.E., was attended by
Yeo-sung Lee (Executive Vice Chairman & CEO of Hyundai Rotem), Tae-jin Yang (President
of Hanhwa), Young Han Bae (Korean Ambassador to Greece) and George Yanis (Chairman
of Attiko Metro A.E.) among other officials.

Hyundai Rotem will design and manufacture the vehicles, which will be delivered to Athens
by 2011. Hanhwa, with a local office in Greece, will be in charge of the export operation.

Hyundai Rotem received the highest score for the design of the vehicle, which symbolizes
a strong and solid helmet of a Greek warrior. It also received the top scores in other
technical evaluation such as energy efficiency, reliability and maintainability, out winning
other competitors from Europe by far.

For this project, Hyundai Rotem is determined to supply vehicles that meet the high quality
standards of the European railway market. To make the cars lighter, Hyundai Rotem applied
aluminum alloy for the exterior and the Nomax Honey Comb, a light interior material
structured like a bee hive. The energy efficiency of the vehicles will also be highly increased
by adapting the Regenerative Brake System, which reuses the energy that is generated
during braking.

The city of Athens, populated by 4 million people, is currently operating metro lines 1 to 3,
and preparing to build fourth line. The need for other railway vehicles such as locomotives
and diesel multiple units is also expected to increase, since the Greek government is
seeking to reorganize and improve its urban transportation system.

An official of Hyundai Rotem said "Through this contract we were able to prove our quality
of our cars." He also added, "We are currently bidding for projects in Amsterdam and
Copenhagen. We hope to continue the 'mythical success' in the Western European market,
as we did in Athens."

Metro: 6 euro normal ticket, 3 euro for students
Bus: 3 and 1.5 respectively.
Taxi: around 15-20 euro (plus 5 euro if you call a taxi the day before)

Thanks guys. What I was getting around to was how attractive a good airport link can be for prospective tourists. It sounds like a subtle advantage, but when you know you can get cheaply and quickly (and hopefully safely) into the city centre it avoids the issue of airport hotels/expensive taxi rides, and can actually make a great difference. I'm sure the issue of airport transfers is a major cause of stress for travellers, and has somewhat discouraged me from visiting some european cities.

BTW, great to see you're still posting here GM, keep up the good work!

15th World Route Development Forum: Airlines honour AIA with first place in Europe - The only European airport with increased number of frequencies in 2009

Athens International Airport (AIA) is once again the winner of the Routes Airport Marketing Awards* in the Europe category. AIA was awarded in the framework of World ROUTES 2009, the biggest gathering of airports and airlines, held in Beijing, from September 12-15. This time airlines from across the globe distinguished AIA for supporting their route development consistently and dynamically, through the airport’s wide-scale innovative marketing programmes**.

During tough economic times, this new distinction has a special significance for Athens International Airport: In 2009, AIA was the only European airport with increased number of frequencies, with its airline marketing programmes having so far brought 12 new airlines to Athens in 2009 (Air Arabia, Baboo, Cimber Sterling, Libyan. Lvov, Transavia, Atlant-Souyz Airlines, Athens Airways, Etihad, Pegasus, Hellenic Imperial and Sun Express) and 8 new international destinations (Nice, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Tripoli, Benghazi, Casablanca, Izmir, Krasnodar).

Within the framework of the 2009 awards, Amsterdam and Brussels airports were highly commended in the Europe category.

* supported by OAG
** By participating in the airlines’ initial business risk in developing a new route through its incentives and marketing programme, Athens International Airport consistently supports airlines for route development and increases the airport’s competitiveness. Additionally, Athens International Airport implements a co-promotion and advertising programme, following pioneer strategies for the development of new routes, contributing to the promotion of airlines in the Greek market.

Olympic Air

" For travellers all around the world, the word "Olympic" brings to mind many memories and dreams. But for all Greeks, it will always bring to mind the first Greek airline. The first airline that opened the world's skies to all Greeks, becoming synonymous with safety and serving as a point of reference and pride for generations and generations - bringing her historic logo of six linked rings to all corners of the world.

On October 1st, the new Olympic enters a new era, spreading its wings and embarking on new voyages. It has been renamed Olympic Air and in the hands of Marfin Investment Group (MIG) (http://www.marfininvestmentgroup.com/), the largest business group in Southeastern Europe, active in the fields of transport, tourism, food, healthcare and IT, with more than 56,000 employees and a client base that exceeds 20 million people in 40 countries, it is ready to once again fly high in the world's skies.

The new Olympic Air will be more modern than ever and have a new vision, a new vigor, a new concept - with brand new cutting-edge aircraft, with innovative and pioneering services, with traditional Greek hospitality, and a renewed passion to offer even more.

In addition to this new momentum, leading technology, innovation, and pioneering, the new Olympic Air will boast one of the youngest fleets of aircraft in Europe, consisting of Airbus A319/A320s and Bombardier Dash 8s. Overall, our investment in the fleet is expected to exceed $1.1 billion.
MIG, as the largest business group in Southeastern Europe, has and will continue to offer its full support to Olympic Air in order to achieve Olympic Air's objectives. MIG's international networks and know-how will support Olympic Air's endeavors globally.

The network of Olympic Air will serve 10 international destinations and 20 domestic, with the intention to serve another 14 domestic locations under the Public Service Obligations (PSO) scheme. Aiming to better serve the travelling public, Olympic is creating business partnerships and code-share agreements with other carriers such as Delta Airlines (*), to serve certain additional international destinations.

(*) The collaboration with Delta Airlines is subject to final approval of the USA Department of Transportation and the Greek Civil Aviation Authority "

Indeed. Speaking about Venizelos the improved connection from the main terminal to the satelite terminal is U/C.

From a previous post couple pages back:

The plans includes increasing capacity and new commercial spaces.
At the moment there is a general trend for the study project which will be completed by mid 2009.
2010 will start the construction of a multi parking.
The project will oversee the architectural firm of Theophanis Bobotis. Visit the link to see how will look.

and from the official webpage of Venizelos airport: [thanks to ucthanos (SSC) for the link]

A new, improved link to the midfield satellite terminal is currently under construction which will allow the complex to be used as a Schengen facility when it is finished by the end of 2010.
Additionally, a new 3,800 capacity multi-storey car park is in the design phase and is expected to open in the summer of 2011.http://www.aia.gr/UserFiles/File/Pre...e_Thinking.pdf (http://www.aia.gr/UserFiles/File/Press/ClippingsEn/2009/Airport_World_CEO_Y_Paraschis_Positive_Thinking.pdf)

Me too. I am waiting to see what the new government will do with that area.

^^It belongs to goverment? Nice density around. It looks very attractive for investors.

The facilities belong to the state. Many investors in the past wanted to invest there. One of the them, an American who is giant in the casinos business wanted to build there the "Las Vegas of Europe".

The municipalities around that area want the area to developed exclusively as park.

The former government proposed, from the total 5.500 acres, 4.500 park + 1.000 commercial and housing developments.

Personally i want a park with some smart and flexible commercial spaces (like the F1 track for example).
