7 pages is a bit of an exageration lol. But yeah this should have itsown thread, it might be small, but it will make a difference when travelling along the freeway.

we no nothing about this proposal and probably wont till mid next year. Why create a thread now?

Scraperfan
December 13th, 2007, 11:08 AM
First thought after you said that Dilaz was I agree, but then I thought that yeh its needed because there will always be "chatter" about the project, and there may be intermittent news articles or announcements which prompt a round of discussions.

Its also the place for ideas, likes and dislikes of what we currently know to be discussed.

yeah pretty simple, good work chris, great job...as always :p lol

The only problem i see in the design is the lack of character.... what do you mean you ask? Well people know City West with teh dome of flashy lights, well i think that element in a new form of City West should be implemented. To tie in the new development with the old one.

Well i like the diagrams i am very impressed :)

Just wanted to bring this thread into this year. Any news on it?

I forgot how much I liked the render for this thing - such a big project with a great retro look. We were supposed to be hearing about this by the middle of this year.

yeah would be good to hear more about it, especially since in the aftermath of the 18 the esplanade debacle a lot of people have been saying perth needs more mixed use.

Isnt part of this under construction somewhere? Like railway side.

Remember reading in the paper where a site across the road was on the market, that something was being built.

Johnvb

Yeah just near the rail there is some construction, however i think it is another series of 4-5 level commercial tennants and not this re-development.

I was wondering when this was supposed to start up. It would be great if there was some sort of lighting feature incorporated into this building at night. I remember when I was little and used to drive into the city - I always loved those lights on the dome that went up and down.

Scraperfan
July 12th, 2008, 05:24 AM
i used to like those too. the dome is a relic though and like the pec and the abc red antenna, needs to be demolished to rid ourselves of the 80's crapola.

Dilaz89
July 13th, 2008, 08:54 AM
I love the dome.

It's far more futuristic 80's style than the pec or abc antenna.

Scraperfan
July 13th, 2008, 09:06 AM
I'd be happy to see it moved and re-used somewhere.

Any ideas?

I love the Omni Theatre - I was at its opening night and blown away by the advanced technology lol. I think it's dated pretty badly though, and the tacky lights on top just make it worse. Still, would love to see it rebuilt somewhere - it would be a shame to have lost Imax and now this screen, even though it only shows Scitech stuff now. Saw Aliens 2 there once - awesome watching 3D aliens jumping out at you.

Omni was great. Pretty sure its not that now. It a planeterium right?

They upgraded it a lot when they turned it into Horizon.

I went to see Sonic Vision there a few years ago, it was brilliant.

OMG how old are you? I remember going in the early to mid 80's to see some shite and never been back. Never been to Scitech but often used the free parking underneath and catch the train from City West station into town all the time back in the day.

dallastexjr

Oi I'm not THAT old!

From wiki...

"Scitech was the inaugural inductee into the Western Australian Science Hall of Fame in 2007.
Scitech has been inducted into the Western Australian Tourism Awards Hall of Fame as a major tourist attraction.
Scitech is mentioned in the Lonely Planet's guide to Australia as a notable tourist attraction.
Horizon's 18m domed screen is the largest in the southern hemisphere.
Approximately 2.5 million people have visited Scitech since its opening in 1988.
250,000 general public visitors and 75,000 school children visit Scitech annually.
Scitech was the first Australian science centre to build large-scale interactive exhibitions."

Yes it was brand spanking new when I went there on a school excursion. I must have been 8 or 9. I'm kinda sad to see this go in some ways. However, let's be honest... it's for the best. LOL

AndyGM

I was under the impression that the Scitech/Horizon end of the current building would be retained while it was the area where the retail section is that would be demolished and replaced.

Anybody know what the original plan was?

I really can't see scitech going as i'm sure it's quite popular. In fact didin't they just receive some govt grant?

Driving past CityWest today I noticed Harvey Norman are having a renovation sale. Does that mean that the CityWest Tower is finally going ahead?

samboy
December 21st, 2008, 05:38 AM
doubt it - That sign has been there for months. I think they're just renovating the store.

jackso

Haha i saw that and took it as a sale for people who are renovating. Stupid me.

just like that rugs a million or another carpet store .... always CLOSING DOWN ... all stock must go ... will virtually give out rugs for free ....

I went in there about a month ago. First - what a depressing centre - also went to the Rick Hart in the old megamart building and don't know whether that or City West is worse as far as quiet and depressing.

It seemed as though Harvey Norman was undergoing quite an extensive renovation - I wonder how the redevelopment of City West is going to affect them? Surely they wouldn't renovate if demolition was happening any time soon.

samboy

I think HN is really renovating but I doubt it has anything to do with the development of the complex.

I'll find out whats going on with this. A place I actually have contacts in!

Ipggi

Well I have run out of things to do so I drove to CityWest today to take a quick look. Harvey Norman is currently under total renovation. The computer and electrical department has been moved to the rear and is completely refurbished. The rest of the store is gutted and closed off. So currently there is no furniture, bedding departments.

So I guess we can probably say that this project has been put on-hold or canceled? Specially considering all public advertising including the external signage outside promoting the CityWest redevelopment has been removed.

The agent dealing with this project still states on its website that it will be ready by late 2009 which is clearly not the case.
