Þróndeimr January 10th, 2005, 07:27 PM Qingdao, 青岛, well-known to the West by its Postal map spelling Tsingtao, is a sub-provincial city in eastern Shandong province, People's Republic of China. It borders Yantai to the northeast, Weifang to the west and Rizhao to the southwest. Lying across the Shandong Peninsula while looking out to the Yellow Sea, Qingdao today is a major seaport, naval base, and industrial center. It is also the site of the Tsingtao Brewery. The character 青 (qīng) in Chinese means "green" or "lush," while the character 岛 (dǎo) means "island." It was recently named China's 9th-most livable city by China Daily. (wikipedia)

Yeah, you can find a couple of thousand other chinese projects as this. This project is even quite unknown in the chinese world, and outside world, didn't find anything about it till i found the architect.
cydevil February 15th, 2005, 07:12 AM There's already a small amusement park near that place, and it's always empty, and from the looks of it, it's bankrupt. Though reasons aren't clear, my guess is that it is because it's too far from the major urban areas.

If my memory serves well, about an hour from the old downtown, and about 15~30 minutes from the new downtown by car.

Wow... that's a bit negative of a thing to say... especially when it hasn't even been built yet... well... wut can i say? You say you live in China and I don't.
By the way, I'd have to disagree with you when you say its going to look bad from all the pollution. I think Qingdao's going through a building boom and will try to improve the city's image- especially with some of the 2008 Olympic events going on there...

Chinese cities will get cleaner when those urban peasants convert to real citizens(due to rapid urbanization). In fact, I do find foreigners(esp. Americans) have worse sanitary customs.

The building is being built in an area surrounded by luxrious residential areas. And those residential areas are very clean, as the new building will be, I assure you. Qingdao is a relatively clean city compared to the other cities in China, and the new downtown is surprisingly modern. Also, there are many convinient stores so you don't have to deal with private vendors that rip off foreigners.
Edit: Oops.. I thought this post was on the new operahouse in Qingdao. But the resort will also be in the same stretch of luxrious suburban houses as the operahouse, and I doubt it will be "filled with garbage and pollution" as you say.

Few Germans know that there was a German colony in China. Despite that the Germans built some nice houses and churches, it was very bad that the Germans entered other countries, imposing their culture on the local people. Particularly, Namibia was affected badly by the colonial rule as the Germans commited a "small" genocide to the Herero people. Do you know anything about the German colonial rule in Qingdao? It would be interesting to learn about it from a Chinese perspective.
Anway, it is weird to see that Qingdao now has something in common with several African cities - German colonial architecture ;) :

一方面能够帮助促进中国国际化，让更多的人对中国不再恐惧。
你让人移民非洲人家还不去呢，这说明在他们看来住在中国不比住在本国差，（如果不是更好话。）
我们念念不忘的唐朝时期，中国的领土上住着多少外国人？西域和东瀛人甚至可以在政府做官，这才是一个超级大国的气度。

你让人移民非洲人家还不去呢，这说明在他们看来住在中国不比住在本国差，（如果不是更好话。）
我们念念不忘的唐朝时期，中国的领土上住着多少外国人？西域和东瀛人甚至可以在政府做官，这才是一个超级大国的气度。
在這點上，我們應該向美國學習。美國的移民政策有非常多的缺點，所以今天美國的社會才會那麼亂。
主要的是，我們不能隨便讓什麼阿貓阿狗都移民到中國。要長期在中國居住應該要有很嚴格的條件。最重要的是要盡量讓會幫助中國發展的人才能移民。我們可不要一大堆吸血蟲，中國的人已經夠多了。

With that said though, not all expats are that way. A few of them are actually quite respectful of their adopted country.

I understand what your trying to say but unfortunately it just doesn't happen that way. Just accept the fact that they're there to do business, foreign business and that is exactly what China thrives on. Without it, China wouldn't be what it is today.

You mean the Jingshan Fort? Yes, of course you can visit it. I was there 5 or 6 years ago, but don't remember any tunnel. Many other German buildings are still there and open for tourists and curious people :)

It is also the cohost city for the sailing events in the coming 2008 Olympic Games and Paralymic Games. Many beautiful Chinese tales came from Lao Mountain in Qingdao city. Various German-style architecture still were well-preserved in downtown area. Overall, Qiangdao and Yantai are my favorite cities.

Where is XiTang by the way? I want to see more beautiful ancient towns like that on my next trip. Also, where in Shanghai are the pics in his second Shanghai album taken? I never saw that area when I visited the city. Such a shame I missed it.

The tunnels are still there - most of the hills are riddled with tunnels from either the German occupation or the Japanese occupation.
I love exploring them, found one the other week hidden by dense shrubbery but looked big enough to drive vehicles in!! Im going to explore it in more detail one of these weekends.

It's got a great deal of german colonial buildings, an atomsphere not found in any other place in china. The price for house could be a little more expensive than the rest of shandong, but still nowhere the price of other large cities. The local dialect is not very hard to understand and the majority of the people can speak mandarin. Overall, you would NOT regret chosing to live there.

qingdao dialect is very similar to mandarin exept the tones
xtraxxl December 12th, 2007, 10:17 PM Qingdao 山东青岛, GDP ranks 10th in mainland （it might be the 06 ranking, but it currently ranks 8th overall in a news I just read a few secs ago), very nice beach, a lot of german style houses (b/c in WWI it was a german colony & that's also why Tsingdao Beer is so good :cheers: ). some of the pics are quite old but most of these were taken within the last 3 years.
Qingdao will host several sailing events of the Olympics in 2008. Qingdao has probably the largest South Korean community in China (either Beijing or Qingdao). I'm not sure about the number right now but I think it's around 100,000.

yes it looks kind of old style. Most of European style buildings in Qingdao was built by Germans in early 1900s.

The airport is located north of Qingdao, about 23km from the city. I feel it's not very convenient to get to the airport by road. The subway to airport is under construction, no completion date yet.

Adpenturz May 31st, 2012, 10:04 AM Dutch colonial architecture buildings are destroyed when world war the second...but there's still Portuguese Colonial architecture such as Fort Victoria in Ambon Island...But there are still many Dutch colonial architecture in Banda island like old church, government offices and houses...thank you very much :)
