FDOT: Road construction won't end anytime soon
Thursday, December 13, 2007
BAY AREA (Bay News 9) - There really isn't road construction everywhere you drive in the Tampa Bay area.
It only seems that way.
But in order to get feedback from the public regarding the several construction projects ongoing and coming soon, transportation officials are holding a public hearing Thursday night to discuss a five-year plan for roadwork in the Bay area.
The meeting is just part of the Florida Department of Transportation's attempt to be proactive when it comes to keeping the public aware of construction projects and avoiding problems before they start.
The FDOT has dozens of projects planned for Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Manatee and Polk counties during the next five years. The state is budgeting billions of dollars to maintain and widen roads, add sidewalks and increase lighting.
Right now, a priority is resurfacing roads in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. Another big upcoming project is the widening of County Road 577 in Pasco from two lanes to four lanes.
And then there is the continued push for increased public transportation.
FDOT hopes meetings like the one today at 5 p.m. at the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council office in Pinellas Park will help.
"We're struggling right now with a project on Dale Mabry Highway (in Tampa) because we've got a business community that wants the project done at night,' said DOT spokesperson Kris Carson. "But then we have residents, they don't want to hear the noise at night. So we have to balance everything."
