Kaneda August 22nd, 2003, 02:34 PM 4/10, Looks too much like all other big English cities ...
Raddie August 22nd, 2003, 02:39 PM Wow very high density! I don't think this city is well planned though? And no highrises, and the mid rises are very ugly and they don't take any focus. Even if they were a little taller they wouldn't take any focus because of height differences in the city.
There are a few tall cranes though, so probably you'll get a Luxembourgish cluster?
3 or less for the skyline
I dunno what I'd give for the city (by the looks) it looks very grey but the high density sure has it's charm.
Not my definition of city though.

AndrewC August 25th, 2003, 12:13 AM Its a great city, my sisters go to Uni there, and it has some nice features like the bridge and the castle, but in those pics it lacks even mid-rises, let alone tall buildings. However i'm aware of some future projects so it gets a

SteelCity32 August 26th, 2003, 07:28 PM nothing impressive. But it's a nice skyline for a small city.
5/10
Talisker August 26th, 2003, 08:43 PM The population is actually well over 1 million, but the city and all the new developments are so incredibly spread out there's no chance of a decent skyline - we're talking up to 15km between proposals

not much a skyline city
AndrewC March 5th, 2004, 04:35 PM Just went to newcastle recently, have to the say, no, the skyline isn't much, but its density, stunning architecture at street level, and its river bank setting maake it one of the best looking cities in the world!!
Necker March 9th, 2004, 05:26 PM Typical british. Nice city, but no skyline. 5/10
Schroedinger's Cat April 12th, 2004, 03:45 PM I think it's rather poor skyline :(
Irish Blood English Heart April 20th, 2004, 08:24 PM yeah its not a great skyline here and there isnt many public places. Our council isnt fans of such things unfortunetly :(
mauiboy63sea July 15th, 2004, 06:07 AM Are the bridges the tallest monuments in the city? It looks like a nice old town. As for skylines, I agree it can only go up since its got density, but right now many low rises. So I give it a 4.5.
ferge August 1st, 2004, 04:29 PM The bridges are stunning, i've seen that new music hall going up, that is very iconic and beautiful.. i find it a shame for Newcastle/Gateshead.. because they are such nice lookin cities that would really benefit from a small midrise/highrise cluster.. even if it was just 70-90m decent quality offices n res buildings.. why are people so nimbyish!
LSyd August 1st, 2004, 05:12 PM it's got a skyline of old buildings, some high-rises, bridges...
again, too bad it's so spread out; it's also got a great statue, Angel of the North, on the outskirts.
the skyline is best seen from the train (I've got a few pics to put up from the train.)

Awayo April 23rd, 2005, 12:44 AM The pictures that have been posted do not really do Newcastle justice.
Of the larger cities in England, Newcastle is one of the most attractive with its wealth of Georgian architecture, waterfront and historic central street pattern.
Newcastle's city council has not been the most accepting of high-rise proposals and as such with some justification as in Newcastle, they have an hirstoric urban grain worth maintaining. The least attractive buildings in the photos posted are the mid-rises built in the 60s. So it's not that surprising in the subsequent more heritage-respecting decades that the council has reluctant to approve tall buildings, even though *we* know that modern high-rises can be beautiful.
Anyways, a city best appreciated by visting it than by viewing ill-composed photos. I'll leave you with a pic of Newcastle's Grey Street, recently voted the best street in Britain and with justifcation.
There are only a few city centres in the UK with a downtown ensemble that matches this one:

johnnypd April 23rd, 2005, 01:10 AM a skyline isn't all about tall buildings. edinburgh probably has one of the best skylines in the U.K. yet is a low rise city. as Lsyd said, newcastle is best appreciated crossing the bridges on the train, either using the eastcoast mainline or the metro system, the vista as it unfolds, with the succession of bridges and then steep, densely built banks of the tyne coming into view, is one of the best in the U.K., and certainly puts larger cities with more high rises to shame.

I think you're bigging it up a little, Newcastle certainly isn't bad by UK standards (which are pretty low) but it doesn't exactly make me think 'wow' as i'm approaching the city on the train as a city with a truly great skyline does (imo).

really? i have to say it does have that effect on me, with the bridges especially, and i have heard the same from others, and seen the reactions of strangers on the train as the train crosses the bridge. it is certainly comparable with the view of durham cathedral and castle, (which surely one of the greatest man-made views in britain). and i would say there are a few views of the bridges, the one i already mentioned, but also from the top floor of the baltic, which are more impressive than the best approaches and best views to and for most other UK cities like manchester or leeds.

nothingman August 7th, 2005, 07:30 PM Fuck man, I'm tired of British cities getting bashed. So, Newcastle doesn't have 100 gleaming skyscrapers, but it's a great city. It has history, culture, lots of stuff to do and beautiful surroundings. Do you define a city as a bunch of stupid skyscrapers? If you do, that sucks.....and I pity you.
I'm off to drink a nice bottle of Newcastle Brown....c-ya!
ferge August 8th, 2005, 01:26 PM I can understand people saying our cities have ugly skylines, because for most part all we have (at present) in most of them is a few, 60's blocks with bad cladding that make them look gritty and grime-ridden..
Yet to say our cities are ugly, full stop! Is just blasphemous.. All our major cities and towns are full of the most humble yet awe-inspiring architecture, Newcastle being an example.. Its pride in its bridges and riverside buildings is a joy to see on photographs.. there isn't anything in the slight ugly about it.
datilguy August 10th, 2005, 06:51 AM WOW. Quite surprising........very lovely. Great density and I just love the way it mixes together. Not very tall, but nice clusters. 6.5
Roekie August 10th, 2005, 11:01 AM I was in Newcastle not long ago. Before I left people told me it was an ugly industrial city. However in my opinion Newcastle is a nice, buzzing, fairly large city with everything on board. I'd say Newcastle doesn't need skyscrapers at all, just some more touching up to do.
elliott August 12th, 2005, 02:59 PM Yeah gentrification is happening right now, should help the city even further

newcastle is an old beautiful town. this town doesn´t need skyscraper to look better. i think it is the same like lyon in france. also a beautiful town without skycraper......

nitro2038 February 26th, 2006, 05:22 AM I visited Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 2003 and loved it. Had the best night out ever at a really fab bar on the water near the weird new (but I like it) footbridge. Not really many tall buildings (like most English cities), but very densely built and nothing too overpowering for the historic buildings. I must admit to having a chuckle about the miniature Sydney Harbour Bridge - I wonder which one was built first?

whitefordj May 28th, 2006, 07:54 PM if they are smart, the city planners that is, they will make any new construction reflect the old style in its design. it dominates the city and that is a great thing. keep a good thing going and it will be a wonderfull and unique city. most of the old cities now have modern skylines with glass towers. this city should avoid that trend, and it will be a special place if it goes tall. for now i give it a 7/10 because of its charactor.
Newcastle Guy June 21st, 2006, 02:59 PM I visited Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 2003 and loved it. Had the best night out ever at a really fab bar on the water near the weird new (but I like it) footbridge. The newcastle bridge was actually finished first, though it started construction slightly later.
A few updates in the cities progress:
We should get news very soon on a cluster of possible buildings between 70m-200m on the old brewery site. The public inquiry came back and it seems the majority of Newcastles inhabitants would like tall buildings, provided they are designed to the highest quality.
Also Newcastle is one of the leading cities in the world for genetic and stem cell research. We lead that field in europe, and have the oppertunity to become best in the world.
plans to triple the size of Newcastle's centre for life and a new 'science city' development planned for another part of the brewery site could see Newcastle lead Europe as the most scientific, and eventually become a world beating city in many scietific fields.
We are also in the running for a Las vegas style super-casino and conference centre that will pump millions into our economy each year, we are up against six other cities.
The site between two of the most modern buildings in europe, the Baltic and the Sage, looks as though it could be recieving a tall building, possbily more than 100m.
One of the regions biggest museums has closed, it will reopen in 2009 after beign completely modernised.
The city council are planning a total overhaul of the city centre within the next decade.
There are lots of projects starting or on the cards, nothing highrise yet, but it won't be long;)
The council are planning to regenerate Newcastle in to one of the best cities in europe over 10-20 years.

Newcastle is a gem of a city. It's a British city that just gets on with itself and doesn't bleat, complain and moan.
Things I love about Newcastle:
1. It's a got a fantastic metro system that inspired design elsewhere in Europe (hard to believe, but true).
2. Romanic settlement - river right through the centre. Always a winner in creating a fantastic scenescape.
3. The accent. Nothing elsewhere comes close to a bit of Geordie!
The charm of a lot of British cities is a the street level. Something hard to deduce on a board like this.
