Please post any road signs that are funny, aren't very common or only unqiue to your country/region. :P

A normal occurance in Sweden, Norway and Finland - is the warning sign for moose. Not sure if these signs are unique to this region, but they very are popular with foreign tourists, especially ze germans. On some popular tourist trails in Sweden the signs are stolen several times a year.

I suppose this is quite uncommon in many countries; warning for skiers...

Another new sign for 2007; warning for veichles carried by dogs.

Australia, a Cassowary crossing warning up in Queensland (Australia in case you didn't know). I actually saw this sign when I was up there just north of Cairns going through the Daintree area. Someone had altered a "speed hump" sign to look like a dead Cassowary - kinda funny. :)

LOL, I saw that one too. Much more clever than drawing nipples on the ones we have here (they have two humps). Maybe they do it to all the signs, although I guess there aren't that many of them as their habitat is rather limited.

I've seen pictures of those polar bear signs with a black background and a white polar bear too, that's kind of cool.

Main reason for that is that the city gets swamped by Muslims during their pilgramages to Mecca. Have you ever seen the crowds at the holy sites? They're unbelievable! It does make sense to restrict access for that very reason (not that I agree with the practice but I can see the sense).

Overt discrimination, intolerance and a supremacist ideology put together lead to terrorism.

It would be quite a mess if every pedestrian just suddenly crosses the street.

In places like Mississauga there aren't any pedestrians. It is a completely car dominated society. Everyone exists inside a box. A box shaped like a house, a box shaped like an office, a box shaped like a store, or a box shaped like a car.

Outside? A city of 700,000 people, but it looks like a catastrophic plague hit last year and everyone died. It is a ghost town, until you go underground or inside. That's where you'll come in contact with other human beings. People drive EVERYWHERE. You don't walk, EVER! Interactions between people are highly controlled. Depending on your occupation and outside of minor transactions, it's actually possible to live an entire year without ever running into another person.

Drive through banks, drive through restaurants, internet banking, internet food delivery services, internet shopping, even filling your car up with gas requires no contact with a stranger. It's an extremely isolating and controlled environment. In extreme cases, the idea of bumping into someone outside is a bizarre concept that makes people uneasy.

The sign needs to be placed in propoer context. This particular sign is at an onramp so I think it would make sense here that pedestrians give way to automobiles. Cars begin increasing their speed, making them stop for pedestrians would also back up road. While I am not defending the car, this sign is by no indication of the obsession with the car, just a bit of common sense for everyone's safety.

Good point, but it says a lot that there is an on ramp in what seems to be the centre of the 'city' and that a sidewalk would be closed for winter. I've been to Mississauga and it is completely centred around the car. How many people walk to the store or hang out on patios on typical Mississauga streets? ZERO. The 'streets' look more like freeways than city streets. It is so inhospitable to pedestrians that it's no wonder they close sidewalks down due to lack of use. The pedestrian has almost been taken out of the equation all together.

This might be an eye opener to people from Mississauga, but pedestrians are usually NEVER are asked to yield to a car. It is always the other way around. The car comes first in Mississauga, not human beings. That is car obsession.

Go to Amsterdam or London to experience cities that are designed for humans first, cars, second. They don't look anything like Mississauga in their design. Roads are narrow, sidewalks are wide. Mississauga? You're lucky if there is a sidewalk at all.

Who's gonna walk 10 miles to work? To be frank, in Dutch cities, you usually only see people walking in the historic car-free shopping districts, or some guy walking his dog.

The difference is, that North American cities are designed for cars and used by cars, and European cities are not designed for cars, though most people still use their car. Every mid-size city in the Netherlands is jammed during rushhour because most major roads are only 1 lane with traffic lights.

I think N. American cities are better designed for todays transportation demands than European cities.

Europe and North America are not that different, though they look completely different.

In practice, ideology (people walking, cycling and use Mass Transit) and practice (people using their cars to go around) don't agree, which results in 8 - 10 hours of rushhour every day.

In my opinion historic city centers should be car-free, and give way to cyclists and pedestrians.

Though elsewhere, they shouldn't discourage car-usage this much, knowing that it doesn't work anyway, with all traffic jams happening because of this policy. It almost looks like traffic jams are created deliberatly to make buses look faster, while nobody use that bus to go to work.

Again, this is the strive between ideology and reality.

Although its very easy to be recognized as muslim. You just have to say to an imam that you believe in Allah and that Mohammed is Its prophet.

Allah is the arabic translation of God. Actually all Christians could describe them as muslims if they also respect Mohammed as prophet, at least I know one person who does have officially both relegions, which can opens lot of doors in the Middle-East ;)

No, I am not arrogant, maybe only sick that everyone in the EU & US is too politically correct and concerned with oil to act against such a despicable regime, that sponsors those who blow themselves up to kill us.

Atheists and those who renounce Islam really are killed as per Sharia (which is official law there). I know it's kind of hard to understand for us westerners but that's the way it is.

Yeah... 2.7 micron vertical clearance is a good joke :)

I don't think the Greeks caught on to that. They're simply showing the unit (metre) in both English (m) and Greek (ľ - the Greek alphabet's equivalent). A capital M would have worked in either language, though it may be bad form. Which brings up a question: how do they differentiate between a millimetre and a micrometre/micron?

Tourists are not allowed into Mecca (nor Medina), period.

Although I did learn that an underground parking structure built in Mecca in the 1990's, had to allow infidels in to get it done. A special bus was used, to control the movement of the infidels in and out of the working area.

Got to respect religious and cultural differences, but on the face of it that sign is slightly disturbing. However I'd guess it's for purely practical local reasons and it's too easy to make snap-judgements. Hey it's their country and their road so I guess they can put up any sign they like.

Uphill is not very easy, but i can do it :) I have to do it often in the parking garage, because some women can't drive there. You have to use the handbrake, give a little gas, and let the car drive, before you release the handbrake.

To do it by the book, you release the clutch and handbrake at the same second, while keeping the gas pedal down. Then the car should kick-start.
I usually do that without handbrake, rapidly changing from brake to gas pedal. Manual might be harder and less convenient but it gives so much fun!

ChrisZwolle
March 9th, 2008, 11:56 AM

You mean you let the car move with the handbrake engaged, or you disengage it just when the clutch catches?

You only have to feel the car wanting to move forward, when disengaging the handbrake, so you need to give a little bit of gas. That's all. When you're used to it, it's pretty easy.

It's one of those things that makes driving more exciting.:)

Verso
March 9th, 2008, 11:10 PM
If a slope is really steep and you have someone behind yourself (so there's no room for jokes), it still couldn't be easier. :) Just do as Jeroen said - no need to do all at the same time; the car won't really move when you give gas, it'll just want to move (by "rising" a bit), and then you can safely disengage the handbrake and voila. :) Maybe the car won't really start moving until you give some more gas, but it certainly won't go back.

Yesterday I had much fun with uphill starting in Seattle. Some Seattle streets are as steep as the ones in San Francisco, and the only difference is San Francisco has got a lot of them. The complexity of the starting uphill on a manual transmission is due to the fact that you have to do 3 things simultaneously: slowly releasing the clutch, slowly adding the gas and releasing the handbrake. After some practice, it is possible to do all this quite quickly.

Auckland is incredibly hilly and I'm always having to do hill starts. The worst is near me where the roundabout is on a hill, so a hill start into a roundabout gave me very good practice at hill starting.

Once you know where the engage point of the clutch is you're fine as the car won't roll backwards (unless the hill is very steep) even if you don't apply the accelerator once the handbrake is off.

Yeah, my car will most likely stall if I don't apply gas on a moderately steep hill ;)

:D Indeed!

I also don't understand why they post information about upcoming projects financed by the EU along the road. In 2004, I barely spotted a sign with lots of text and a motorway sign on top while travelling from Igoumenitsa to Meteora in Greece.

Later I realized it was about the Egnatia Odos. But there is just no way any driver could read it.

I saw the same sort of signs in Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia too.

You mean probably something like this.:

http://www.dialnice.info/album_pic.php?pic_id=2964

But, this is not traffic sign and drivers are not supposed to read it. It's just information about what is being built, who is the investor, who is the constructor, when construction started, when it will be finished and so on. Such information are also on U/C buildings and they have totally nothing common with traffic signs.

in croatian "kut" means "angle". there are some "kut" places in Hungary, too (Kadarkut).

in Latvia there is place Kursiši. "kur" really reminds for "kurac" what is vulgar penis (and everything with "kur" reminds on that, especially german word "kurz" :D), and "siši" is imperative of "suck", so that could mean "suck the dick" :D

The one from SA, do you think that that means exactly that in Afrikaans and was named that on purpose (although it's probably a coincidence). No, the sign is in Afrikaans, and that has developed different from Dutch in the last three centuries.
In Afrikaans a "Inligting-Aftrekplaats" is in Dutch formally a "inlichtingenbureau": a place where you can get information.
A "aftrekplaats" doesn't exist in Dutch. But the Dutch verb "aftrekken" (also) means masturbating, while a "plaats" is just the same: a place.
The sign is also quite harmless in Afrikaans - but in Dutch it has quite an alternative meaning...
