Foster + Partners creates the world’s largest single building
One of the world’s most ambitious building projects, Crystal Island has been granted preliminary planning permission in Moscow. Enclosed within a vast mega structure covering a total floor area of 2.5million square metres – the project’s scale is unprecedented. At 450m the scheme in one of the tallest structures on the planet, creating a spectacular new emblem on the Moscow skyline. Conceived as a self-contained city within a city, it contains a rich mix of buildings including museums, theatres and cinemas, to ensure that it is a major new destination for the whole of Moscow.
Presented to the Moscow Public and Architectural Council, Crystal Island is a highly anticipated new project. Located on the Nagatino Peninsula, edged by the Moscow River, it is located only 7.5 km from the Kremlin, and offers panoramic views over Moscow from a viewing platform at its apex.
Crystal Island will have a range of cultural, exhibition and performance facilities, approximately 3000 hotel rooms and 900 serviced apartments, as well as offices and shops, designed to maintain a dynamic and animated public realm throughout the day. Residents are able to work and live within a densely planned area where every amenity is within easy walking distance, including an international school for 500 students. Mixed-use also presents a strong case for energy balance, with individual components using energy at different times, while reinforcing the breadth of economic and social activity of the area.
The building’s spiraling form emerges majestically from a newly landscaped park, rising in converse directions to form a diagonal grid. This distinctive geometry extends throughout the project into the park. The result is that the scheme is seamlessly integrated into a new park landscape, which provides a range of activities throughout the year, including cross country skiing and ice skating in the winter.
The internal built volumes assume a staggered formation within the triangulated steel mega frame, extending flush against the sloping facetted glazed outer skin. This terracing creates a series of wintergardens, which form a breathable second layer and thermal buffer for the main building, shielding the interior spaces from Moscow’s extreme summer and winter climates. A vertical louvre system sheaths the internal facades to ensure privacy for the individual apartments.
Dynamic enclosure panels slotted into the structural framing allow daylight to penetrate deep into the heart of the scheme and can be controlled to modify the internal environment – closed in winter for extra warmth and opened in summer to allow natural ventilation. Energy management is at the heart of the design, with additional strategies to include on-site renewable and low-carbon energy generation.

I really don't like the way Foster combines 2 older designs of his own and comes up with a 3rd. The project seems to lack (Foster's) creativity.
Here's the recipe for this project: mix "Khan Shatyry Entertainment Centre, Astana, Kazakhstan" with that crystal tower from Khanty Mansiysk, then add "growth powder" or something.

Perhaps the most stunning aspect of this project is not only the visually intriguing design, clearly a derivative of the old reocurring motif of the axis mundi, but the height of it: 450m!!! Definitely it is reminiscent of the X-SEED 4000. I hope architects around the world will begin to realize the potential of this shape for structural integrity. The most advanced and ambitious projects in the future might, ironically, regress back to the pyramidical/conical structure
It's often amazing how correct the ancient peoples were with architecture. There was a dome in Italy that was constructed a long time ago that contained congruent and evenly-spaced holes around the perimeter of the building. Not too long ago, some workers were busy doing maintenance work on the building and filled in the holes because they assessed that they had no purpose. Consequently, and not too long afterward, the dome cracked.

It is the project of Foster + Chigirinsky.
Other their notorious projects:
Russia Tower
Zaryad'ye redevelopment
Holland Island redevelopment in SPb
The Crystal in Khanty Mansyisk
Hotel Moscow is also Chigirinsky project afair.
Shalva Chigirinsky owns The Russian Land company which capitalisation is predicted to be around $10bln after next year's IPO. It is one of largest developers in Russia.

What do you mean "WTF"?
is this really going to get built or is it like one of those South Koren skyscrapers thats approved but never gets built?
Not a strange question I guess. It got lots of unused space when I look at the cross-section which is not very profitable.
But what about the construction time, isn't 5 years a bit short for such a project??? And is the starting date already known?

Love the park too. The plans are very generous with the space which its nice too see goes all the way down to the river with the road underneath...
But! Although all thgat space seems nice, especially as its not full of buildings... it will need some development in there to help keep it supervised and populated. That sort of space could easily become unsafe. Maybe if some of the main routes through to the bridges were lightly developed to keep them active?
Beautiful vision though

LoL- Whatever! Build it!
OH! I disagree! This lovely structure is indeed very elegant ... it is a soaring design with a mathematical spiralling motif that brings to mind the petal arrangement of a lotus flower. Ugly? Not at all! It is not ostantatously ornamented like the new tower in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, or as silly and trendy looking as many of the towers going up in either Dubai or Las Vegas. Foster + Partners’ Crystal Island scheme in Moscow has been given preliminary planning permission, paving the way for construction of the “world’s largest single building”.
Enclosed within a “vast mega structure” covering a floor area of 2.5 million m2 – the project’s scale is enormous. At 450 m the project will also be one of the tallest structures enclosing the largest volume, on the planet.
Located on the Nagatino Peninsula, just 7.5 km from the Kremlin, it will provide “stunning” panoramic views over Moscow. A vast mixed-use project it has been conceived as a self-contained city within a city.
Amenities will include museums, theatres and cinemas, a school, 3000 hotel rooms and 900 serviced apartments, offices and shops making it a “major new destination” for Moscow.
Surrounded by a public parks, which will provide a range of year round activities, including cross country skiing and ice-skating in the winter. The triangulated steel mega frame, extending flush against the sloping facetted glazed outer skin, creates a series winter-gardens that form a “breathable” second layer and thermal buffer for the main building, shielding the interior spaces from Moscow’s extreme summer and winter climates.
A vertical louvre system sheaths the internal facades to ensure privacy for the individual apartments.
Energy management will play a big role in the running of the building, with additional strategies to include on-site renewable and low-carbon energy generation. Enclosure panels will be slotted into the structural framing to allow daylight to penetrate deep into the heart of the building. These can be controlled to modify the internal environment – closed in winter for extra warmth and opened in summer to allow natural ventilation.
Commenting on the project Norman Foster said, “Crystal Island is one of the world’s most ambitious building projects. It is the largest single building in the world, creating a year-round destination for Moscow and a sustainable, dynamic new urban quarter. It is a paradigm of compact, mixed-use, sustainable city planning, with an innovative energy strategy and ‘smart’ skin which buffers against climate extremes.”

so far the most pretentious projects of monumental architecture in russian history have not been realised, although both times, in 1917 and in 1930's, these ideas were quite serious. the superb constructivist monument by vladimir tatlin for the 3rd international was cancelled due to lack of materials... war, you know. the palace of the soviets had already been u/c for many years, before the nazi invasion made an end to the project, the structure was dismantled and materials used elsewhere. it had had financial and other difficulties as well. hopefully this time there's more luck! That's true that Palace of the Soviets was u/c. Huge foundation pit was evet completed and works nowadays as a base for rebuilt Christ the Saviour cathedral. But AFAIK Tatlin's tower had newer been more than a visiion. There even was no sertain decision where to put it: in Moscow or in Petrograd.

Wow... Can they afford that huge financial Investment for such a daring project ? and the cost of maintenance won't be little to keep that tower from becoming dull overtime , however, another great addition for the new Moscow

my god, what an undertaking. its going to be hard work for the gardeners who need to make that enormous garden. also why would they be so inefficient with space. isnt there like over 10 million people in moscow

What kind of joke is this?!
This "building" looks like the "Church of the light of the world" or "La Luz del Mundo" . . . a weird religion very famous in Mexico!

I highly doubt this building will be built. It appears to me that there are no serious efforts to begin construction. It seems more like a hypothetical building rendered by the architectural firm, not a serious project with investors. It wouldn't be the first building no one ever got around to by Sir Norman Foster. Remember Millennium Tower? It even had a Discovery Channel special and there are no serious undertakings for its construction.

The building does look like it's made for a cult. This might look better in a place like Las Vegas.
Edit: Ok, I think I know why I don't like this building, it's a Foster design. I hate Foster's buildings. All of his designs look like they came out of the 1960's. :bash:

I like the design... I'm just wondering if the archtitects considered the masses of snow you have in Moscows winter ...

roof collapses yes, but not on a 450m tall skyscraper ^^. and why not installing a technique to smelt the snow on the roof :)

this proposal has a lot of horizontal roof elements...
and snow melting is rather cost-inefficient, no?
